    Roll Menu (1/2)

This sushi restaurant on El Cajon Blvd. has always remained the casual sushi spot for many years but encountered different ownerships. It's another one of those restaurants offering a 50% off "deal" for their rolls on the menu. Their original prices would not make me consider dining here, as the quality felt average for the price. I feel as if they could just omit this strategy altogether, that it would attract more customers. Kuro does a bit extra with the presentation as presented in my Sushi Combo set B. My plate was neatly garnished with some apple slices, a mini side salad, and a carrot cut into the shape of a flower. I enjoyed my choice of a crunch roll. The pieces were bite sized and didn't have too much rice. My chef's choice nigiri were comprised of tuna, salmon, red snapper, shrimp, and the last fish I could not identify, but was enjoyable! I thought the choices were quite average and matched the price ($18). The set came with a miso soup on the side as well and I found the meal quite filling. Overall, it is a decent restaurant, however, I wouldn't rush back unless I was in the area and looking for a quick sushi fix. The staff were polite and attentive but slowed down when I realized I was the only customer.

We stopped by to grab lunch. There weren't any customers, so we could sit wherever we wanted. The restaurant was spacious, with many seats and tables available. The staff was friendly and welcoming. However, the service was slow. They were also talking to someone regarding their business, so they were not attentive to us. I ordered a Salmon Skin Roll and Pork Katsu bento. The Salmon Skin Roll was good, and I appreciated that there were more fillings than rice. My only complaint is about the rolls' prices. They put an overpriced price for the rolls and say there was a 50% discount to make it seem cheap. I hope they were more transparent about the prices. Moreover, the pork katsu bento was dry. It was overcooked and tasted old. The portion size was generous, and the bento price was reasonable, too, since it was a lunch special.

Have been driving by this place and finally had time to stop by for dinner! I wasn't expecting much, but it was surprisingly good. We ordered the fire fire roll, black pink roll, popcorn roll, and crunchy roll. They were all really good and came with a small salad. We also had the happy hour jalepeno poppers. Our little bro had the chicken katsu combo and he said that was good as well. We ended the night with some green tea tempura ice cream but it was just alright to me. I wasn't feeling the pound cake on the outside, the kids ate everything tho lol. We will definitely be back!

I was hungry for lunch after my acupuncture appointment down the street at EverThrive Health and saw this little gem and decided to give it a try. I received a warm welcome upon walking in and was seated immediately. HUGE bonus points for picture menus!!! Everything looked great and I finally settled on a Tiger roll. When it arrived it was picture perfect and tasted great! The sauce was tasty and I finished the entire thing. Service was prompt, server was kind and attentive. Establishment was very clean and inviting. I'm so excited I found a healthy sushi place just down the street from my new acupuncturist! Two great finds in 1 week! Woo hoo!

Kuro Sushi is the new business that has taken over the standalone building in the Rolando neighborhood that housed an AYCE sushi spot for several years. When that restaurant closed for business, another sushi spot took over for a little more than two years before this latest transition. A small dedicated parking lot still exists on the west side of the building. The interior remained the same with the sushi bar up front and a dining area off to the left. As part of the grand opening, the entire list of nigiri, classic rolls, cut rolls, hand rolls, and specialty rolls was discounted by 50% for dine-in and 40% for take-out orders. That seemed good on the surface, however the regular prices were inflated to offset some of the savings. For example, all of the specialty rolls were regularly priced between $20.50 and $28.50. That's really expensive for maki rolls. Another disappointing aspect was the word 'crab' on the menu. In reality, imitation crab was being used and not real crab meat. My meal consisted of Fresh Water Eel nigiri, a Spicy Scallop roll, and a Pink roll. The first roll had cucumber as a filling with the spicy scallop while the second roll was made up of a spicy tuna interior and cucumber with salmon and spicy mayo on the exterior. The rolls had an average diameter and nine pieces in an order. For the food quality and pricing, the dinner I ate at Kuro Sushi was a three star experience.

When we walked in there were maybe 3 other tables. We were greeted immediately. From the happy hour menu we got the gyoza and the stuffed jalapeños. Both delicious. The rolls were so good. It was all decently priced as well. The rolls were made quickly. There were televisions all over so we were watching whatever basketball games were on. It was pretty quiet in the restaurant.

The hype is real! KURO Sushi is worth the hype. For me, it was worth driving 30 miles from Carlsbad all the way south to La Mesa (round trip 60 miles, I'm not kidding) to try their signature sushi dishes: 1) "black pink" and 2) "sashimi salad". I call myself as a sushi connoisseur who has been to Tokyo, LA, Singapore, Busan, and finally San Diego to explore freshest sushi options. There's no bad aftertaste, there's only fresh and clean taste from the first bite to a piece of sushi touching your tonsil on its way down to your hungry stomach. "Black Pink" sushi was hand crafted and rolled to its perfection! Right amount of rice (no less nor too much), cream cheese, spicy salmon, deep fried tempura and last but not least jalapeño on top! All these ingredients will create a great rush in your mouth as you chew on them but very smooth feeling in your stomach. $13.50 for this piece of culinary art is SO UNDERRATED! :( I would personally pay $23 or even $25. "Sashimi Salad" was like you biting into the whole blue clean ocean. Slice of cucumbers, red leaf lettuces, marinated seaweeds and square cut sashimi pieces were all perfectly seasoned with "chogochujang" (Korean chili paste + vinegar). If you're a carb-conscious eater, I'd highly recommend this ZERO CARB dish to you. Take my word for it. Your tastebud will be satisfied.

We decided to come by for lunch. We got the teriyaki chicken bento box & a roll of beach boy. The chicken was a bit dry but the sauce helped cover that. The pricing was great for the bento box as it was cheaper during lunch time. As for the beach boy roll, I would have liked it a bit more deep fried & a little more spicy as it said it had jalapeño pieces. Also theres a sign outside that says 50% off variety of rolls & tbh I don't think I'd pay the full price of $20.50 for the beach boy roll so I'm glad it was $10.25. The location is a good spot near college area & there was plenty of parking spots although the parking area is a bit small. As for ambiance it looked nice & clean inside. They did have the tv's which I thought was cool. As far as the service, our waiter Consuelo, she was friendly & attentive.

Marcelo did a great job with this Sashimi platter. Thanks !!!!!!

This place is great The quality is very good and the service is great. Sitting at the bar and being able to chat with Marcelo (a master at sushi ) was a great treat. To see him prepare those dishes and learn his story brings good feelings to you as a client. Congratulations and we will see you again soon

Asked for a "no rice" roll. Nick made accommodations and wow! Great presentation and even better flavor. Thanks again guys!

Always friendly and food is always beautifully presented and FRESH which is a must for sushi!

One of my favorite places that has an amazing 50% off discount. The location itself is a little bumpy, with it being next to the restaurant, there is an extreme deep hole that will scratch your car no matter if it is an SUV or a smaller vehicle. I wish they would do something about their lot because it's very unreasonable when parking. However, the service and food is quick and easy, it's delicious and one of my favourite spots for something cheap and good!

Had a great meal! The sushi was fresh and delicious, and the service was excellent. I'll definitely be back!

We began with the deviled eggs--a classic reimagined with such precision they served as the perfect structural opening to the meal. The true showstopper, however, was the Filet Mignon. Topped with a vibrant, hand-cut chimichurri, the steak didn't just meet the knife; it surrendered. The sauce provided a brilliant counterpoint: fresh, crisp, and possessing a light, tingly spice that dances on the palate rather than overwhelming it. Even the greens were a celebration; the "weed salad" arrived as a kaleidoscopic "rainbow of happiness," proving that even the most virtuous courses can be indulgent. Right away when we arrived I noticed that the flooring on the revolving fireplace looked like it needed to be replaced. I shrugged it off thinking they needed light weight materials for the revolving floor entrence. But I didn't think it was a good look for what is supposed to be a swanky exclusive vibe and being the first thing you really see. ( First impressions are important) Despite having made a reservation, we were seated directly between the revolving entrence and the exit, in the two coolest looking but most uncomfortable chairs. They were not practical at all for sitting and conversing a in a loud environment. That corner, in my opinion, should be reserved for the hostess and not for guest. Initially we thought these chairs were a quick stop before being moved to some of the other available sitting at the bar or around the perimeter we could clearly see when we came in. We asked, and where told those were our seats. No offer was made to be moved. We did not get a server to come to us until after we had placed our drink order with one of the hostess, about 20min after we were seated. Our server was very nice and polite. No issues there, just took long to get to us. The drinks were disappointing. Forgettable to say the least. We ordered one of there menu items and a Moscow mule. We were sad to see the Moscow mule served in a glass you might normally get a mojito in ... it wasn't served in a copper cup. As we sat there and looked at the place, we both thought the ambiance and decor was nice. However we were surprised to see so many people looked very underdressed considering they have a "smart casual" dress code, completely destroyed the whole swanky exclusive vibe. Lots of men in shorts and both men and women in flip flops. I also noticed the flooring inside the speakeasy had similar wear and scuff marks, as on the fireplace. The need to update their flooring and the amount of underdressed guest did not help project the vibes that they are going for. This really felt like a fast food (drinks) chain in any mall. Sadly I would not recommend, do to the drinks not being all that good, the service was mediocre, the "vibe" and experience they sell fall short.

Being a sober girlie, I've heard about this place for years and was thrilled to finally try it so we had to order a few drinks. I really like the growing NA trend, and even though I drink, it's great to have an alternative, safer-feeling, and more inclusive nightlife option. I came with a couple friends on a Sunday night, about a week ago. We all drink alcohol, but we've all been drinking less lately. The place was almost empty around 8pm, which we found concerning for its prospective longevity. We also thought the prices were pretty steep -- maybe I'm biased as someone who drinks alcohol, but if I'm getting a mocktail or other NA drink, I'd like to pay less than $15+ for it. Still, I ordered the Ave Maria and thought it was one of the best mocktails I've ever had. One of my friends got the Malibu (he liked it but did complain about the price), and I don't remember what my other friend got. We sat for a while and played Connect4 using the fanciest set I'd ever seen. Some more people came in, so it didn't feel nearly as empty by the time I left.
