I've officially reached my limit with Kyoto! For over $20 a plate, I could go to an actual teppanyaki restaurant and at least get a dinner show out of the deal. Instead, I'm paying premium prices to sit under fluorescent lights and question my life choices. The "Combo" Math that Isn't Mathing Then there's the pricing logic--or lack thereof. Why does a chicken and steak combo cost 20% more than the steak plate alone? * Standard Logic: A combo price should land somewhere between the cost of the chicken and the steak. * Kyoto Logic: "Since you want both, we're going to tax your indecisiveness." Either they have zero respect for their customers, or they're catastrophically bad at math. I'm betting on the latter. Honestly, I could buy a Blackstone grill for the cost of three or four visits to this place. The "Service" (If You Can Call It That) To top it off, the customer service is abysmal. The staff acts personally offended by your very existence. Even the older gentleman--who I assume is the owner--is the worst of the bunch. Wow! I keep driving by this place and finally tried it. So glad I did! Fresh, delicious teppanyaki that was ready in 5 minutes! Tons of food. The sushi rolls are super affordable too. It was enough food for two people and $28! The veggies in the teppanyaki were fabulous. We got a spicy tuna roll and the chicken teppanyaki meal. Nice to get the same taste and volume without all the wait and fanfare and expense of a regular teppanyaki restaurant. New staple for me! Will be back soon. Came in here with my son for dinner. The portions are big, the food comes out hot. The chicken juicy, the shrimp was from a frozen bag you could tell. The fried rice was lacking egg if you're used to having egg in the fried rice. Ordering was fast and easy. This place has a few tables inside and a self serve soda machine. Akiras Japanese restaurant was a family favorite. I was looking for amazing fried rice- while searching, we found Kyoto who happens to be the owners of Akiras. We couldn't wait to try it. Located in the shopping mall at Stockdale Highway and Buena Vista with Samco, Mister Car Wash , Planet Fitness and Harrington House. It's bright, clean and modern. Order at the counter. There are a half dozen or so tables inside. We recognized the faces right away behind the counter. It was the two owners and one guy in the kitchen. The food- Overall, it's still good- familiar. Less lemon and butter than at their previous teppanyaki restaurant. The fried rice was better on day two. For take out teppanyaki, we were happy with it. If you're a fan of Akiras- give them a shot and help support their small business. read more

I stopped by this place the other day to grab a couple meals before work. Now this is the second time I've been here. I think the first time was about a year ago so I had looked on yelp to for the menu and the prices. When I stepped in the establishment I did notice that the prices did go up significantly. I believe the Chicken bowl was about $12.50 but now goes for about $17.50. Now you do get a good portion of chicken, rice and veggies for the price. But if your comparing a Chinese combo plate which is about $13-$15 bucks for the same size portions then yeah this place is a little overpriced priced! The chicken was well cooked not to dry, the rice was okay at best with little seasoning as far as salt, soy sauce and maybe a little msg. And the veggies were soft but drowned in what tasted like soy sauce. I did drown the food in Sriracha sauce, which makes everything taste better in my opinion. But was the food and the price good enough to come back a third time....probably not. So be my guest and try it out for yourself. read more

One of my favorite places in town for sushi. They have a great fried rice and an awesome katsu. Been here for a dinner date a couple times and even brought the whole family. It's a small, quaint, spotless, family owned place but you're definitely getting a homemade lunch or dinner selection off their menu. Everything is made in house. It's fresh, so it's not fast but not saying it's slow either. Every time we've been here it's reasonably priced with a little wait. Excellent food options and I feel it's one of the different sushi spots in town. A much larger roll but super fresh and super delicious. My husband and I love teppanyaki. We'd been wanting to try Kyoto for quite a while, but their hours are split (open for lunch, then open again for dinner) and we kept missing them. Today we finally made it there for lunch. It was a holiday and it was quite slow for them, but we didn't mind the quiet. The service was friendly and the menu was simple. I chose the chicken teppanyaki and my husband the steak. We also ordered a side of miso soup. Our meals came with fried rice and grilled veggies. All together we paid $40 - no drinks, just water. I felt the the price was a little pricey, considering traditional teppanyaki meals comes with soup, salad, and a show. But the portions were very hearty and the food was quite good. If I'm being honest, I didn't care for the spicy mustard sauce the meals come with, but the ginger sauce was delicious! At one point I told my husband it was like crack, I could get enough of it! I left feeling very full; I ate all the chicken and veggies, but couldn't finish all the rice my meal came with. My only complaint, carrots were definitely missing from the grilled veggies. We ordered a hibachi shrimp (with fried rice and veggies) and hibachi steak (with white rice and veggies). The fried rice was a little salty, so next time we'll def order the white rice for both. I've had food here several times now this place definitely deserves 5 stars; however, they are inconsistent. I've gotten food twice now when it was super duper salty and hard to eat, so not sure what happened. Other than those 2 times, Kyoto has been really good. I recommend this place. If you order over the phone or online then you won't have to wait too long. It's a fast food version of teppanyaki, but you can tell it tastes fresh and you can see them preparing your food in the back if you order at the restaurant. They also have sushi here too, it's pretty good sushi. I would get it again for sure. Anytime I have visited, they weren't busy. People come and go, but there's never a huge wait time or line. The restaurant looks clean and there's a good amount of parking. You guys need to try it if you haven't tried it. read more

My toddler threw a tantrum and the staff were so nice and accommodating to us. We had to leave after ordering in and they gave us a bag and sauces for the road. We ordered the California roll for our sushi- fresh and good size; approx 6 pieces. For our entree we ordered the steak and shrimp; steak is very tender . Plenty of rice; rice overload. Grilled vegetables; zucchini and broccoli. I think there was only one or two pieces of broccoli. Would have been nice to get a few more pieces of broccoli. This is enough for two people . The tastes of Benihana or Shogun, but fast casual for a quick to go meal! Kyoto is delicious! We were originally going to grab Panda Express next door, but decided to give Kyoto a try. Their menu is simple. Either choose from their hibachi bowls which include fried rice and veggies with your choice or protein or get a sushi roll. I got the chicken and shrimp. It was delicious! The portion was huge and the food was so full of great flavor. Because the food was freshly cooked on the grill, it had nice char and crisp to the edges. It was so good. They also include your traditional teppan sauces (one ginger and one sesame). This will definitely be added to my list as one of Bakersfield's bests! read more

They are usually my favorite go to place when I want fried rice . This is the one time that they weren't what I was expecting. The firecracker roll wasn't a bad choice, but it was the first time I had it, and I was expecting something more savory. It seemed as if the oil it was fried in old. Not complaining about the flavor just that it wasn't what I was expecting in flavor. The chicken and steak plate was ordered by my wife and she said it was good but the steak was a little tougher than she normally gets the shrimp plate have every piece of shrimp on the plate overcooked I ate maybe three shrimp and a couple spoons of rice put it down and try to eat it later. I microwaved that the next day it virtually not edible. Usually I eat my whole plate and don't have a problem. The only difference in the service this time and last time was I ordered it an hour before they closed. Not sure if that made a difference but I will never eat it that late again. Overall I love this place and it stopped me from traveling next door(if you know where they're located you know what I mean)! The food was great here have nothing but great things to say about the food. The ambience was clean, quiet and nice. The restroom was perfectly clean, but I didn't give a five stars because the service was just service. The older owner who owns it at the cash register was a bit uneasy or disgruntled looking as I open the door to leave and how that open for my colleague he scolded me and told me to close his door keep in mind. Pretty solid fast-casual eatery. Very limited space for seating, so I'd recommend getting food to go. I tried the Steak and Shrimp meal, and the flavor and cook were both good. I liked one of the sauces, but the other (with wasabi) was a bit grainy and broken. I got a ton of zucchini and only 1 piece of broccoli, and more rice than I could eat over 2 meals. I saw this place being built and I always wanted to try it. Just my luck, a vendor catered their food to my office 2 days ago. We were so impressed we decided to go try it in person! It's a small restaurant with limited seating, I think carry out is their main business. The owner or manager was overlooking the staff and they are very well trained. And the food came fast. I ordered the steak and shrimp combo, and I found out why this place is a grill. My food was cooked in the style of teppanyaki! What a smart idea! It even come with the two standard teppanyaki dipping sauce, ginger and mustard. Of course the side is fried rice! The meat was cooked well, and the rice was delicious and buttery! I'm kind of obsessed with teppan meals and this fast-food type of restaurant with a choice of protein, fried rice, and veggies is right up my alley! We have come many, many times and will be back many, many more. The location is fairly new so it's super tidy, but it is also very small inside. Only a handful of tables available but we usually order ahead of time (totally recommend doing this to avoid a long wait since everything is cooked to order), pickup, and enjoy at home. They have great protein choices as well as a couple of sushi rolls, salad, and even katsu chicken. We've had almost everything on the menu over the many months that we've been frequenting the location and have enjoyed everything. My one tiny complaint is that, sometimes, the veggies aren't cooked through and you chomp on a hard piece of zucchini... not the worst crime, and definitely not bad enough to keep me from coming back lol.
