I have been here many time and always had great service and quality of food. This time though it was different. The chicken teriyaki my wife ordered tastes like it was microwaved, the rolls were just rolls, no flavor, and the fish didn't taste as fresh and normal. We walked in at 5:30pm on a Saturday night and the restaurant was about 75% full and they had lots of people coming in to grab take out. We were seated promptly at a small table. The space itself is small probably fitting 25/30 people at the tables and counters, has the real intimate hole in the wall vibe. Sushi options were awesome and they had some good looking specials. This place opened the year I moved to Bakersfield, 20 years ago. I ate there when I first moved here and always love their food. I have not been there a while so dropping in for a lunch for one. The greeting was warm and traditional, every one from chef to wait staff yelled the Japanese greetings. This is a cosy, traditional Japanese place. Clean, efficient, well trained staff. I asked the waitress for recommendations, she recommended the Bakersfiled Roll and yellow submarine. Bakersfield roll was tempura shrimp covered in soft layer of avocado. This is a cute little sushi spot. I'd been here once before, years ago when I was new to Sushi. Since then, my palate has expanded and I give the food here a 3 outta 5. I love the decor and layout of this restaurant. Staff is attentive, but not overbearing and the menu is pretty simple offering the usual items you'd find at a Japanese restaurant. I ordered a spicy tuna hand roll and a miso soup. The soup was fantastic! Very flavorful. The tofu pieces were firm, and not mushy. As for the roll, it was okay. Nothing to really rave about. We tried the Seadood Salad and it was a little spicy for me but not for my husband. It was a base of mixed greens topped with a mix of sashimi cubes, grated yam, fish eggs and a quail egg. It came with rice, and a kimchee sauce to mix with it. I can't remember what else it contained. It was delicious. We also had baked mussels, miso soup, cold unfiltered sake and a double order of uni. I was then served my entree with the Chicken teriyaki, California roll, pickled cucumber, smidge of potato salad with a bowl of white rice. I taste of the chicken was excellent , no so sweet, but the sauce was mild and delicious. The cucumber was almost addicting and the tiny portion of potato salad was a pleasant surprise of good old fashion potato salad . The white rice was fresh, soft, easy to digest. It was over cooked. They have experienced sushi cooks and their staff are "johnny on the spot" with anything you need. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for good Japanese food. Stopped by for lunch and ate on the patio. Miyoshi is a small place, a bit crowded with stuff, but well worth a visit for the food and the service. We tried the Gyoza, which were crispy and fresh, and 3 rolls, each very nice. The sauce on the Miyoshi roll (crawfish, Popcorn baby lobster, shrimp tempura, crab, avocado...) was a little sweeter than I would have hoped for, but it was still very good, nice and crisp. The Tiger's Tail roll also had sweet sauce, but it paired well with the tempura shrimp inside, which was still hot and crispy. My favorite was the Sunset Strip roll, which was crab, cucumber, and avocado, topped with fresh tuna, salmon, and more avocado. Very fresh, and refreshing.
