Casual ambience. The restaurant was very large and had a wait of about 20 minutes, which was not too bad for our group of six. The complimentary nachos were good and the salsa was enjoyable as well. The pico de gallo was very fresh and refreshing. The server was very friendly. I ordered steak ranchero and lemonade. The lemonade was refreshing and not too sweet, with a nice balance between lemon and sugar. The steak was a bit dry for my taste, but the beans were good. Overall, it was a decent experience, and the server created a friendly atmosphere. The service was slow but still good.
Glad I checked Yelp for good food in El Paso! L&J Cafe was a nice spot for some no frills Mexican food in a lively atmosphere. It definitely felt like the center of town with the buzz of energy and the clientele. I sat at the bar and was greeted with some chips and salsas (yes, plural), it was a nice touch to get a free bowl to snack on. For my dinner I ordered the mole chicken enchiladas, and it was great. The mole wasn't as aromatic as I expected, it was mostly sweet with a little herbaceous taste in there. But not very smoky or complex. Still, the dish overall was great, the beans were delicious and the enchiladas themselves came out really nice. I can see why this place comes highly rated!
Delicious food, lively atmosphere, great prices, cool history, and amazing service. What more can one ask for?!? Our late lunchtime wait was only 12 minutes. I was surprised that they had a whole section on their menu dedicated to vegetarian dishes! We also bought some salsa jars to take home with us.
This was our first stop in El Paso. If you're not looking for this place you might not find it! Very unassuming, and in a largely residential area across from a cemetery. Lots of street parking around. We were seated immediately and enjoyed looking at the history of the restaurant while we perused the menu. Lots of entrees, all fairly priced. Service was efficient and the food was absolutely delicious. So many delicious flavors, especially on the combination plate. Recommend!
First time in El Paso and my first stop was at L and J Cafe. It was completely delicious, including the free chips and salsa's. The roasted salsa was my favorite. The steak was cooked perfectly and the chili con queso topping was tasty. Service was good, he kept my water full. The outside is almost in a residential area but inside it's a lively restaurant.
Wow! Wow! We had an incredible time. We are so happy we came here! We were driving through El Paso on a road trip and stayed an Airbnb down the street. So we were able to walk up this restaurant - which was great bc the parking lot and adjacent street parking was packed! This restaurant came highly recommended by both the airbnb host and my friend who is from EP. We came on a Thursday evening around 630pm - there was a wait out the door and we ended up waiting for about 15-20 min. Based on reviews we ordered the following: 1. Queso dip as an appetizer 2. Mexican combo plate - but we substituted the red chili enchilada with their famous, legendary green chili chicken enchilada (which the waiter confirmed was what they are famous for) 3. Chicken tortilla soup 4. Tres leches dessert Everything was amazing!! INCLUDING THEIR included and unlimited chips and 3 salsas! Their red salsa was very good. Their green salsa was even better!! And my favorite was their mocaheta salsa - which I ended up getting three refills of!! The chips were fresh and made in house! So good!! The ambiance was exciting and joyful! The waiter Alex was wonderful. He created an amazing experience! He was friendly, helpful, attentive. He did his best to pay attention to us and serve us in an efficient way even though we could tell the restaurant was super busy - he worked very hard to never rush us! We are so happy with our food choices! On the Mexican combo plate - I loved everything: beef stew, steak flauta, green chili chicken enchilada and chili relleno! The chicken tortilla soup came out with the toppings on the side so we could put as little or as much avocado, cheese, or lime as we wanted - i loved that feature. We first tried the chicken and broth by itself and it was amazing - so when we added the toppings it was next l level! The tres leches dessert had peach in it, the whipped cream frosting and the soft spongy cake was SO GOOD! We kept raving about our experience for the remainder of the night. We will definitely come back to El Paso - even if it's just for this restaurant! PS. The waiter packed me extra chips and salsa to take home bc I loved it so much. I ate them for breakfast the next day!
Great food! We were disappointed to find out they do not have liquor only agave. Many tables did get Agave Margaritas though. We started with guacamole and chile con queso. The Queso was amazing loaded with chiles and you could tell homemade with the real stuff. The guacamole was really just avocado with some diced tomatoes on top but very fresh. I got the Chicken Enchiladas with both red and green sauce as the server highly recommended the green sauce. She was not wrong, the green sauce was very creamy loaded with chiles and had lots of flavor. I typically get red sauce but would recommend the green sauce! The enchiladas themselves were very good the chicken was on top and not a ton of meat. The place was very busy yet big on the inside. Parking can be a bit challenging as street parking. Server was awesome with the recommendations and attentive to our table.
Hands down the best Tex-mex I've had! If you are ever in town you have to check this place out. We visited this restaurant after we landed in El Paso and before our road trip in NM/TX. I'm so glad we picked this restaurant. The food was so good that we kept on looking for its replacements throughout our trip. Nowhere got even close. We missed it so much that we were excited to visit again after our road trip and before we flew out of El Paso. I'm not an expert in Mexican food, but everything we had there just tasted exceptional. Started from the free tortillas chips. They were so crispy and made fresh. There was just enough grease and salt to taste good, even after the chips got cold. The chile con queso dip was addicting. All of us ordered fajitas as we were really impressed by our first visit. The food not only had good flavoring, and cooking was done right that it has that "wok fragrance " if you know what I mean. Even the sour cream was extra creamy and a bit sweet. I'll 100% come back again when I'm in town. The service was quick and attentive. The place was popular, but we didn't have to wait long because there are lots of tables.
I was driving by El Paso on a roadtrip and wanted a quality meal, so we stopped here because of the reviews. And it did not disappoint!! There was a little bit of a wait, but it was worth it. I don't usually love Tex-Mex but this was more Mex and truly tasted authentic and was so fresh. Our server was so kind and the service was great. I will say the guacamole was pretty bland and underwhelming, but their sauces and meals made up for that. Cool homey environment too. 100% will be stopping here when I pass by!
Amazing!! As another reviewer suggested, I relied the Mexican combination plate but subbed the red cheese enchilada for the green chicken enchilada. It did not disappoint! The portion was huge! My favorite was by far the Chile Relleno. It was so good I would up snacking on my leftovers as soon as I got back to my hotel room. 10/10
Often visiting El Paso for shopping my wife and I come to this historic iconic restaurant for lunch. My wife was there a week ago with one of her girlfriends and I got 'jealous' so it was my choice for lunch this visit. We had to wait about 15 minutes for our table but it was worth it! We both had the cheese enchiladas in mole sauce with side of beans and rice. I know that Mole is like BBQ Sauce, there are many variations and taste, too smokey, too hot, two chocolaty, etc. I grew up in a Hispanic home where Mole was prepared regularly. For me, the L&J Mole is one of the best that I have ever tasted. As always the food in general was amazing, including the fresh fried tortilla chips and their selection of salsas. Cesar the server was outstanding. It's our place to take our visitors in El Paso.

L & J was a last minute lunch decision as we had some time to kill for a few hours before our flight. It seemed like the reviews and number of reviews made it seem like the right move to get a taste of Mexican food. They did have the best tortilla chips I've ever had. Ever. They were perfectly crisp and salty. The salsas were also good flavor wise but far milder than I expected without an option for a spicier one. I started with a mango margarita and the green chili queso. Both were mediocre. The queso wasn't spicy as I'd hoped and the margarita tasted like straight mango juice. They had an afternoon mini special where we got mini enchiladas, tacos, quesadilla, and flautas. Honestly, I wish I'd just gotten a plate of the enchiladas. If I ever end up back in El Paso, I'd still come back and try again but change what I ordered. read more

We've been here twice and have really liked everything we've had. This time I had the cheese entomadas with an egg on top, which were SO. GOOD. My husband had the mole chicken enchiladas which he liked and they had such a unique flavor! Also the chips and salsa are delicious and the chile con queso is a MUST. Even my toddlers were happily chowing down on everything, which says a lot about the food. Our waitress was also amazing. She was working a super busy section but checked in on us often and brought us things we needed quickly and without fuss. It's a busy restaurant so we had to wait to get in, but it was no longer than 20min. Reasonable prices, great service, clean space, will definitely recommend to friends and come again. read more

We came at 5:30 on a Friday night and were told it'd be a 45 min wait but were seated within 20 min! We ordered the Mexican combination plate and the tampiquena sirloin and everything was amazing. The guacamole and rice and beans were delicious. I understand how this place got all of the great reviews and awards they have all over their walls! read more

The food is absolutely delicious. It's a small space and parking isn't ideal, but the service is pretty good and there's always someone walking by asking how you're doing or if you've been assisted. The bar is a separate area, and I believe it's only beer... so no margaritas, but the food is so good alcohol doesn't even matter. read more
If I could I'd give this place 10 STARS!! I came here with some friends for the first time and I noticed that the parking lot was so full. It was about 2pm on a Thursday so I figured the lunch rush would be over but not at this place. Once I walked in with my friends we were greeted and seated quickly. Surprisingly, the restaurant looks small from the outside but it's huge inside. So much room for many people. The bar area is very active with regulars. Our server was very attentive and friendly. She kept checking up to make sure everything was good with our food and drinks. Now for the food...,, DELICIOUS!!! I can't really compare it to my grandmas but the food here is soooooo amazingly good!! I'll be coming back again soon and don't forget to order some sopapias for desert! Enjoy my pics :) read more

The rental car agent at the airport recommended when I asked for a "non-chain" mom n pop Imo. When you see neighborhood people walking in and carrying out. Or blue collar type enjoying a meal together. When you are surrounded by Spanish speaking clientele: it must be authentic. I was not disappointed. Staff was super friendly and helpful and knowledgeable. Even "table neighbors" offered their opinion. (And one lady let me have her "extra taco". The one they originally brought her was too soggy for her liking When they brought a replacement she was full and gave it to me. I was full too, but felt obliged to eat the gift. EVERYTHING was delicious. And even reheated well the next day! Def recommend the place. Especially for authenticity . read more

After a small wait we were seated and promptly welcomed with a small bowl of freshly fried , hot and crisp tortilla chips accompanied by 2 different salsas one red and one green ; my favorite was the red . These salsas are puréed, which I didn't mind . I got a lemonade and they make it in house it was delicious and not to sugary . I chose the Caldillo which in my mind is more of a traditional chili verde then it was a caldillo but regardless of the name it was absolutly delicious . Flavorful soft meat married well with juicy strips of green chile and potatoes and a rich broth . They serve it with Spanish rice , refried beans and a warm tortilla . The menu is fast and even has quite a few Vegan options ! Looking forward to visiting again ! read more

L&Js is a great place to go for great food. We went for breakfast. The service was great. The coffee was hot. Everything was perfect. I really wanted the chilequilles because when I visit El Paso crave chile rojo. My husband ordered the twos breakfast. We left here very full and happy. I bought jars of salas as a souvenir for friends back home. Great place by a graveyard. read more

Being the most and arguably highest rated restaurant in El Paso, this place was a natural choice. Even during covid it came with quite the wait of 35 minutes on a walk-in visit. Staff was okay - seemed overwhelmed and too lightly staffed. The patrons were the real win here. All fun loving and easy-going. The menu has tons of choices and the flavors are all very unique compared to other Mexican restaurants. The name alone doesn't exactly give the feel that you're about to eat Mexican food. There are several beers on tap, including a semi-local from Karbach Brewery. Lots of TVs with different games going all at the same time. There are occasionally people that come through selling things like wallets and face masks. The picadillo tacos were simple and delicious - love the way they lightly toast the shells. The rice was nothing special, but the beans had a unique flavor to me. My dad got a couple enchiladas with an incredible cheese sauce. And from Karbach we got a delicious seasonal red ale called Yule Shoot Your Eye Out. They have a TouchTunes Jukebox that another cool diner was controlling with a lot of great jams. Can't wait to get back in here and try out more of the menu. I understand they get packed practically shoulder to shoulder when the whole physical distancing thing isn't happening. I get the feeling that the primary draw here is the atmosphere rather than the food. read more

Well congrats and get ready for some good food. Now Mexican food is NOT something you have to search for in El Paso! So I'm not going to say that L&J is any better or worse than anywhere else. Heck, I might not even know the difference anyways - I do actually still eat Taco Bell after all lol. So then why, how, can I give L&J Cafe 5-Stars? Very good place. Fast service good quality. I had the chicken enchiladas with green chile. Wasn't too spicy but had great flavor. I also had the chile con queso, highly recommend! With the side of fresh chips served it's amazing. To drink I had the freshly squeezed lemonade which tasted like it was a mixture of lemons and limes, I loved it. Price is alright the portions are definitely big, I had some to take home to go. I'd definitely recommend coming and checking it out. The menu offers a good variety yet it's simple. It was really busy and parking was kinda full, but there was a couple spots open on the street. Being my first time the server was kind and offered me some great recommendations. The only thing that upsets me about this restaurant is that I don't have one nearby in San Diego. The establishment is clean, all of the people that work there are helpful and friendly, and the food is delicious!!! They brought out fresh chips and salsa. The chips were crispy and not overly salted, the green and red salsas were flavorful. Ordered a lemonade expecting some Minute Maid. Nope! This tastes like some homemade lemonade, not too sweet, not sour. Don't skip on this. We ordered the Chile con Queso dip which also came with some corn tortillas. Tried them with both the tortillas and the chips, and it was sooo good! Simple, cheesy, and not spicy for those that can't handle spice. Honestly, I would have been satisfied with just the dip, chips, and tortillas, it was so filling! I asked what their most popular dish was and was informed by our server that it was the green Chile and chicken enchiladas, which is what I ordered. I've never really had enchiladas before, so I don't have a baseline to compare it to, but man oh man, I don't think any other enchiladas will be able to compare. They came with beans and rice. The chicken was so soft and tender. Cheese and chiles on top elevated the dish even more. To be honest, I've been on a search for a copycat recipe because I cannot get this dish out of my head, but I have been pretty unsuccessful. I hope to visit again in the future so I can go to this establishment and try more of their delicious food. Highly recommend this spot for anyone that's in the area. read more

Food is always amazing. Most consistent place to eat for decades. Service is always great even when they mess up your order. Hard to find good customer service these days. I was too hungry to take pics, but I had the ground beef red enchiladas and man oh man did it hit the spot. Flavor bomb, savory and mild heat. Rice and beans were in point. Now the star of the show was the sopapilla they gave me. Looked like a big breasted naked lady haha. Not sure what was going on there but it was delicious, glistening from the honey drizzle. I knew the food was going to be good here but was still impressed just how scrumptious the green chili enchiladas were. Extremely tender, filled with hearty chicken, heaped on top with green chili. My mouth is watering just thinking about how good these were. The rice and beans were done well and I didn't leave a bite left on the plate. The flan was a bonus. Very rich and creamy. I would suggest splitting it between at least two people. Overall, a must visit when in El Paso. In fact, this restaurant might be the reason you visit El Paso. read more

I've been here a few times already and am finally getting around to writing a review. This place is fantastic! As many others have stated, it's not much to look at from the outside, but the food is so delicious and the service is great. Tonight the place was packed, so the food took a while to arrive, but our server was apologetic and so sweet to keep our drinks full. This time I tried the tortilla soup, which was amazing!!! I've probably eaten half the items on the menu by now, and I haven't been disappointed. My son ordered the mole enchiladas and I think they're the best mole I've ever had! read more
My buddy visits El Paso regularly and recommended this place as "the real deal." I grew up in LA with the Mexican food that is quite similar to the food at L&J Cafe, but live in Houston with the fancy Tex-Mex food. I hope Houston hasn't ruined me with the fancier Mexican food, because I was quite disappointed with L&J Cafe. I got there 15 minutes before their 7 pm close time listed, but the wait was still 20 minutes. Not sure the 7 pm is their true close time. I really was excited since that seemed like an excellent sign. When I got to my seat I ordered a local beer, Dead Beach I believe the name was. I was not a fan. It has a sour taste as if the draft lines were not cleaned, not that it was a sour beer. The chips and salsa they dropped off were interesting. The chips were great. Definitely tasted home made. The salsa was very spicy, which I loved. However overall it tasted like overly spicy ketchup. Not really a fan. I was going to get the tacos, but the server said the burrito was good sized. I went with the steak burrito and guacamole side. I realized I failed to read the menu when it didn't come with rice and beans. The burrito was decent, but nothing great. The service was great, she was extremely nice. Will I be back? Likely not. If I'm in El Paso again, I'll do a Yelp search. read more

Going strong since 1927!! Yeah it's Historical! Know ONE thing...Put Green Chiles on anything and everything served here is an automatic Win!! Seriously though it's a house specialty and they do it Right! Excellent flavor with just a hint of heat. And lets not forget the house-made red hot sauce...Wow I almost go speechless trying to describe it. But let's see, its not overwhelming hot but definitely not for the weak, smokey chile flavor with a consistency of a thick sauce; almost looks like enchilada sauce. Great Stuff We had the Green Chile Chicken Enchiladas. A generous portioned plate served 3 large fully loaded enchiladas with rice and beans...for about $12 - money very well spent! Margaritas are decent but not strong. Micheladas...Meh! Don't waste your money. I don't know if micheladas are different in El Paso, but it tasted like plain lime juice and beer for $8.50 - don't do it. You've been warned Service was excellent and friendly. Yes, dining inside is available but Must Have a Face Mask to enter. read more
