I've been hearing a lot about this place and finally made it over there today. It's a small, charming place. There was a bit of a wait outside but the line moved quickly enough. I had an iced latte ($5.5) and tried the almond croissant ($5) as well as the pistachio rose croissant ($8). Coffee was solid and both croissant were really yum! It's also close to the Brooklyn heights promenade which is where I sat down with my dog and enjoyed everything. Definitely a lovely way to spend a Saturday morning. Run don't walk! But make sure you get here early! The open at 8am. I was in line at 7:30am on a holiday weekend on a very cold Monday and there were three people in front of me. Once we were allowed in OMG the smell of freshly baked pastries took over! I tried the regular croissant which was delightful. Very flaky just the way I like them. I also tried the everything seasoning croissant which was not as good as the regular one. There was too much crushed poppy seeds on it I think. Dropped by on a Friday morning and there was a short but quick line out the door. You order on the first floor, and you take your goods upstairs to eat. It's a super cute space with portraits decorating the walls. A great place to chat with friends, read or book and get some work done on your computer (I saw people doing all of these things when I went). There's also a bathroom on the second floor. After their initial success with selling out croissants from their apartment, the couple was able to open a French bakery storefront in Brooklyn Heights. After an event nearby, I finally got the chance to try out L'Appartement 4F. I went later in the afternoon so options were thinning, but I was able to snatch an almond croissant, or croissant aux amandes, and the last almond croissant with nutella filling. As expected, the nutella-filled croissant was quite heavy, but I really liked the sweetness and nuttiess of the frangipane and the croissants were still flaky and crispy. Solid four stars. Cute little boulangerie in Brooklyn Heights that I stopped by for some carbs on the way to Brooklyn Bridge Park. I had heard about this place before as their story has been written about extensively, and it's also a bit of a social media darling. I was sad when Maison Kayser nearby closed as it was my go-to baguette spot, but L'Appartement 4F seemed make one that was just as good. I would say upper quartile (maybe close to Bien Cuit quality), but not as good as La Cabra in my NYC power rankings. It's above average, but given the hype I was expecting to be blown away, which I wasn't. Alrighty, are the pastries good? Yes. Are they worth waiting in line for longer than 15 minutes? No. I got here at 7:53am on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and there were only four people ahead of us. We didn't have to wait too long to get inside. The ground floor is a bit small in terms of the space, but there's a good-sized dining area upstairs that you can go to after picking up your pastries. I ordered the tahini chocolate cookie, pain au chocolat, almond croissant, plain croissant, and raspberry croissant. The cookie, raspberry croissant and almond croissant were all mid. I personally thought the excess butter in those croissants made them unpleasant to eat (and very messy). I definitely preferred the pain au chocolat and plain croissant, but were they the best croissants I have had in NYC? Nope. I also ordered the chai with oat milk and it was noooot good. I know that probably is not their fault because they use a particular brand of chai -- but just a heads up it might not be for everyone. I came back to try the croissants and was not disappointed! The plain croissant is fluffy and legit, the classic type with a crispy interior and perfectly layered interior that you don't expect to see again after coming home from Paris. Truly top two in the city. The chocolate chip cookie is as amazing as ever. Why not 5*? The line! When I first arrived at 10am on a Sunday it was around the corner. I had an appointment at 11am nearby and so I budgeted a half hour wait only to find myself mid-line at 10:30. I came back later in the day, but it was still a 30 minute total wait and they were sold out of flavored croissants by that time. The bakery does a really poor job of managing the demand because I've never seen a line move that slowly. The owners have never taken an operations management class and it shows. There was just one cashier serving hundreds of people and yet there were two staff members sitting around outside trying to sell charcuterie boxes and ice cream no one was buying. Guys, pivot and have one person taking orders up the line outside, one person packing/distributing, and the third taking payment. Better yet, let people who don't care about sitting in the cafe and taking photos inside pay and get their items to go outside right on line. I've been here during the day for pastries and, more recently, at night for their wine bar. The pastries are top-tier. We got a plain croissant and a kouign aman. They were buttery and caramelized to perfection. The bakery is located very close to the Brooklyn Heights Promenade. When the weather is nice, you can take your pastries to the promenade and eat with an unobstructed view of downtown Manhattan. The wine bar is also adorable. The casualness of the place, mixed with classiness from the wine bar, is such a cute combination. The wine list is short but well curated, and the staff is patient and give great recommendations. I didn't think it was a good croissant considering I have eaten so many from such great bakeries like Librae Bakery, Michaeli Bakery. The hype is real! I finally got around to trying the baked goods from L'Appartement 4F and it did not disappoint. I had to try a plain croissant, and this was definitely the highlight for me. Flaky, buttery, crisp with each bite...it was a pretty darn good croissant! I also tried one of their specials, a rose pistachio croissant. Very delicious, with a real nice dusting of pistachio, and the rose petals were a nice touch. The filling inside tasted like it was made with honey, and was DEFINITELY sweet. Maybe I'm weird for wanting a little less of the filling, but overall I still really enjoyed it. The regular croissant was $4.50, while their special was $8.
