My friend gets two points for insisting I go to L'Orso during my Rome visit. From food to service, and everything in between, I was treated like I was the pope (well, maybe a Cardinal, at least). For starters, as in many other cities in Europe, there is someone usually standing outside the restaurant that tries to lure you in. At L'Orso, the owner stood outside, but he needn't even spend the effort to get you to come in...people either stampeded to the door to get a table, or at least shook the owner's hand in passing. That kind of respect only comes from running a quality, reputable place. The first dish I ordered was the antipasto all'Italiana. A mixed plate of prosciutto, salami, melon, and cheese. All aforementioned items were of highest freshness and general quality. The prosciutto had the natural oils and fat to give it a shiny lust, like gold. Perfect. It was, however, the rigatoni carbonara that motivates me to write an immediate and emphatic review, in order to sing its praises. The egg component of the sauce gave the noodles just enough silk-like texture. The bacon was cut into small, although thick, pieces that added the smokiness to give the dish that extra complexity. Lastly, the noodles were cooked al-dente, allowing you to have that extra "bite." Do not deny the luxuries that Rome has to offer; instead, bathe in them. Dine at L'Orso 80. read more

My friend suggested I come here for an authentic experience and great food. So I Walked all the way over on a Friday night but... Apparently it's closed for the holidays during the whole month of August. I was pretty disappointed so I thought I'd mention it here so that you do not make the same mistake I made. Our party of five had a lovely, enjoyable, delicious lunch after a wonderful visit to the Vatican. The fresh Bread and Breadsticks along with very flavorful Olive Oil that they provided upon our arrival was a great start. The Moscato was lightly sweet and the Italian Beers were the perfect accompaniment to our selections. The Pasta dishes that we ordered were cooked to the perfect Al-Dente texture. The Bucatini alla Amatriciana, the Stacciatella soup, the Spaghetti Arrabiata, the Pizza, the Cacio E Pepe Pasta... one dish was better than the next... The grated cheese was awesome. This is a great restaurant for anybody who wants delicious, home-cooked food. The Antipasto was amaaazing! We got our food really quickly and even though we over-ordered, we ate all of it. Great selection of wines too. Everything was very reasonably priced for the area, and the friendly waiter even let my 11yo son pay the bill ! Great for families or couples and you have to eat here. After just returning home from a trip that included London, Paris and Rome, I have to say eating at L'Orso 80 in Rome was the best dining experience we had on our entire trip. Not only was the food delicious but the service was even better. We could not have been treated any nicer. Our waiter Simone (sp) was fantastic. He helped us choose items from the menu that he thought we might like to try, everything from the homemade fettuccine to the veal that you could cut with a fork to the red wine and desserts was wonderful. I would highly recommend this restaurant and the area in which it is located is really quaint and beautiful. If you are in Rome don't miss out on dinning here. You won't regret it!! read more

What a joy! One of the best places in Rome. Fantastic food, great service. Might be pricey for some but you get what you pay for. Everything freshly prepared, top quality, great taste. Do not order too many starters because they will just spoil you completely with an overwhelming ammount and you will not be able to eat your main course :) Had two dinners there with my familly. The food was delicious, but all else was lacking. At the recommendation of our hotel, we came to this restaurant just down the street. On sitting, we ordered two glasses of wine, and were instead brought a full bottle, already uncorked, which we were charged for. We only drank two glasses. My partner was very hungry and I wasn't, and I ordered the antipasti and delicious cacio e pepe, thinking I could eat a bit and take it back to our hotel. Three separate occasions I asked for my food to be wrapped up and the waiter agreed. Between the antipasti and pasta courses, we waited so long, we almost left. After we asked for the check, I asked again to take my food to go and the waiter agreed, brought the check... and no food. When I clarified that we wanted the food to go, he joked that we could just take the wine instead -- that we didn't order in the first place. I'm not sure whether the misunderstandings were deliberate, but I've never had this problem anywhere else in Italy. Extremely disappointing experience that I had high hopes for. read more

Very good homestyle Roman restaurant. Huge antipasto set up. This was probably the 2nd best amatriciana we had in Rome. This was our second visit as well since we went 4 years ago on our first trip and came back again. The prices are very fair and it is close enough to Piazza Navona that you can get a great meal without getting ripped off by the places in the piazza. Stumbled across this restaurant on an afternoon stroll. Waiters were nice and attentive (even split a dish for us without asking). Had the mixed salad (fresh and delicious, didn't have dressing but I didn't mind as this is the way I like it) and the vegetable soup (yum perfect for a rainy cold November day) it was simple but flavorful (big portion). Our first night in Rome and the bed and breakfast we stayed in recommended this place a 2 minute walk down a very small street. There server was very attentive and yet not overly so. We had a bottle of house red and the special which was ricotta spinach ravioli Ina tomato sauce. It was a delight after a long day of travel and jet lag. I could have sat outside for much longer into the night had my wife not been ready to get some sleep. There were many locals and international travelers as well. Good honest Roman food near the Piazza Navona. They are best known for their antipasto, which could include very good meatballs and grilled vegetables. And the antipasto is enough for a meal, but better if you can share. They also do very well with their pastas, from a terrific amatriciana and carbonara. Best meal I had in Rome (four days). Get the carbonara if you're craving a white sauce. You won't regret it. If you're looking for seafood, get the seafood tonarelli which comes with a blush sauce and homemade egg pasta. They provide a complimentary arancini, best I've ever had and their cheesecake was delicious (I don't even like cheesecakes). Great service. Enjoy a meal outside and people watching. This place was so good we had to go there twice in a day. We would have given it 6 stars if that was an option. The food was excellent and the service was friendly, fast and attentive. When we arrived, they gave us a bread basket and fried rice balls. I had a delicious homemade pasta with a mix of seafood, my husband had an exquisite whole fish, my daughter loved her steamed clams and mussels, and my son was very happy with his pizza. For dessert we had a simple and delicious dish of strawberries and ice cream. There were so many options on the menu, you'll certainly find something you like. Came in craving a plate of spaghetti carbonara, and they delivered. Not the cheapest place around, 10 euros for a plate of spaghetti, but it was worth it. My one critique is that they used pancetta and not guanciale, but it was still creamy and flavorful. Service was good, bread was surprisingly very good, and only 1 euro cover each person. Ate inside, roomy and good working air condition which was a huge plus in 95 degree weather. One a side note, some of the other tables had ordered various fish dishes which looked unbelievable. We loved this place. It was recommended by a friend of my wife back in the USA. It was kind of far from our hotel, but we walked over through charming streets as night settled into the city. We were not disappointed. It is a little out-of-the-way but well worth the trip. For Roma it is a relatively large restaurant, and the walls are covered with original art of all sizes and subjects. When we were seated, they gave us a small bowl that had two hot tempura fried zucchini slices and two meatball-sized rice balls. The balls had a kind of Mac and cheese flavor to them with a lightly crispy exterior. Both were excellent and included at no charge. The servers were very friendly and attentive. No sooner did we finish one course when another was dropped in front of us. Portions were generous and very reasonably priced. They have a pretty good wine list, by the glass and by the bottle, also at reasonable prices. We continued by splitting a plate of fettuccine with mushrooms and we are glad we did that, because it was a very generous portion. The mushrooms were sublime and the pasta was just what we would have hoped for. For the main course, I got the swordfish puttanesca, which is Sicilian style, and my wife got the lamb chops. The swordfish was baked with eggplant, cherry tomatoes, capers and more olives than I could eat. Caution; they were not pitted so be careful. It was also available grilled, but get the puttanesca. You won't be sorry. My wife's lamb chops were cooked to perfection and very tender. She declared them the best she had ever tasted. For dessert I took their suggestion for a bowl of "fresh fruit, which included a surprising amount of raspberries, blackberries, blueberries and strawberries. They brought it with a fresh Italian lemon and a little packet of sugar to put over it. It was sublime. My wife got a tiny espresso and then they brought us a couple of lemoncellos, on the house.
