Delicious chicken soup and enchiladas verde

Love this restaurant! Consistently great food and the service is outstanding. You must try this place. You will not be disappointed. The family works incredibly hard to make your experience extraordinary. Very casual ambiance and plenty of street parking.

Nice look and feel of Mexican when you walk in. Music playing and decor. Although it had the smell of a smoky kitchen. The salsa is pretty plane and bland. This from a guy who hates spicy. This was not even near having any bite, not much taste either. The chips were on the brink of stale. But a hungry man ate all of it. Chicken Chimichunga was good but not very hot. The plates are cold when they put the food on it which just cools the food. That said the meal was fine but could be hotter.

Well, damn, y'all. Now I can't leave Chattanooga. At least until I have tried 92.3% of the menu at La Altena. After hearing much to do about this little spot (see my pics - if you don't know what you are looking for, you will easily miss it- if you do, it's like your eyes blink and you're on the street somewhere really . . . authentically Mexican-looking . . .) I ventured in today and found them open - yay! Divey. Friendly. Cramped inside. Love. Huge menu, from start to finish. Queso to start with their chips and salsa (note: first round of chips, free; second/more, 0.99) - white as I expected but thicker than at home. Tasty. So many choices, from all the usual solo suspects to combo plates, fajitas and salads and more. I went with the tacos- got the Mexico City style and picked two (you can order a la carte or an order of 3 for just under $5) which is your choice of meat (I got steak which was well flavored, and they also have chicken, pork, spicy steak options) with onions and cilantro - note, both are very generously added, so for me I picked off about half the white onions and enjoyed the heavy amount of cilantro as served - and I got the extra tomatoes and sc - odd, though, that it was sliced tomatoes in a cup not diced (so I didn't eat, partly because of that but also because they just weren't that ripe/tasty looking, I guess it still being early Mar and all). Perfect amount of food for me with the starter of queso and I was a super happy camper with my big Diet Coke. Expect to see your typical spectrum of worker-bees-at-lunch, like the corporate guys sitting at a big table in the middle of the main dining room or the slightly bitchy, verrry gossipy Erlanger nurses crowded around a booth for four (they fit six). Note that the women's room has a step UP to get in, and DOWN to get back out - don't trip on the pretty tile floor. NPWH. I will be back, soon. Those fajitas - they have a small, regular and large size, all with rice, beans, etc! - are calling my name . . .

Best Mexican food in Chattanooga... And it's crazy cheap. Try the Mojado burrito. Also, they love cilantro.

Tonight I ordered a dish that was unacceptable in that when I cut into my shrimp, chimichanga, water poured out or something similar to the consistency. It was disgusting, so I sent it back. The manager explained that this was better or oil. Lol. I cook with both of the above very often. It was not. I think that it was frozen shrimp inside the tortilla. My dish was steaming, and was very hot when it was served, which lend me to believe that it was in the microwave. My next order was the fajitas. I ordered shrimp, chicken and steak. Not one time did my waiter replace my chips, nor act as though I was an important guest. It was one of the worst experiences that I have had in some time. My bill was exorbitant because I ordered margaritas along with my food. I will never be back. I ordered margaritas, because I chose to drink instead of eat since the food was so bad. This place is one step above Taco Bell in my opinion. In addition, I left a very nice cash tip. This was not due to the fact that the service was great, it was because I felt guilty for sending back my first order.

We had our two young girls and they were very understanding and accommodating (high chair and coloring sheets). The menu is interesting but to be honest, we enjoyed almost none of our items. The cocktails were very meh. Not awful but not great. The food is really where this place lacks in my opinion. No one was a fan of almost any dish we got. The puffy tacos with redfish were likely the worst. Under seasoned and close to being gross. The catfish dish was so so. The fish itself was good but the grits were hard and the green tomatoes were so sour that they overpowered everything else. The ribs tried but I'd suggest going to a legit BBQ joint for real meats like this. The potatoes were greasy and mostly bland. I'd rank this our least favorite meal in the city. Interestingly enough. We were just at a Michelin star restaurant less than a week before and had the complete opposite experience.

Upon arrival, a friendly host found us comfortable booth seating behind the bar. The waitress not only answered our food allergy related questions pertaining to certain dish prep but the manager came over to our table to assure us that she would be double checking our order to make sure there was no allergen cross contamination. Such a kind, thoughtful gesture! Mom and I ordered the sampler to split - a huge tray filed with delish gluten free chips, a delish bowl salsa verde, a delish bowl of homemade guacamole, and a delish bowl of homemade cheese sauce. For my lunch, I got two of my favorite tacos on their menu still, the California Club ones, large tacos filled with roasted chicken, a tasty like crema, and avocado. Not as hungry as I, Mom got an Oy Vey Taco, another longstanding goodie, a brisket based taco, which she enjoyed. Our later than planned Wednesday lunch was perfect.

It took a while for a server to see us, but then it was fast to get our drinks as well as food once orders were placed. Tacos were alright, Cali club was messy & drippy. Homeboy was good but I don't think I'd get the spicy version again - not overly spice just overly sauced. The appetizer trio was good, but seemed expensive at $14. Overall the place is nice, but a little expensive for tacos.
