From Chicago, just moved to Kyle. We were in Austin and stumbled into lB for lunch. Here are some thoughts: -If this is average barbecue, then average barbecue in Texas is way better than great barbecue in Illinois! -There was a long line out the door on a hot afternoon. Luckily, they had ice water available. Line moves slowly. -Once we got inside, we were happy we waited. I got the beef brisket sandwich (9-10/10) with extra pickles and my wife got the pulled pork (7-8/10) with pickles and onions. -The beef brisket was so good it didn't need barbecue sauce : ) The pulled pork had a very strong pepper taste. -We also got a big pickle (4-5/10) as a side. I love pickles, but this one was average. -Service and price were both good. Highly, highly recommended!!
We really liked la Barbecue, although we weren't sure what made it worthy of a Michelin star. I couldn't find specifics when I looked it up. We realized the strategy was to order for pickup a day in advance so we wouldn't have to wait in the long line. We were 15 minutes late for our pickup time, and the food still wasn't ready. However, we waited five more minutes, and they gave us a full-sized bottle of barbecue sauce, which kind of made up for it. I also wasn't sure if they would've hurried up if we had arrived earlier. We ordered the sliced brisket sandwich, El Sancho Loco, and a pint of "shells & cheese." The sandwiches were really good, and the Sancho Loco sandwich was special in that it had chopped brisket, pulled pork, and sausage with red onions. The brisket was soft and juicy. The mac and cheese was great too. It had a unique spice to it from the poblanos. We enjoyed the tangy barbecue sauce that came in the bottle as well as a more smokey barbecue sauce that came in a small side cup. Our total was $48, and this was a good portion size for two people.
The food was good, the ambiance is questionable, and when you do finally get inside for service it was perfect. I personally didn't like the waiting period, most BBQ places that have an hour wait time are possibly under a canopy or have water close by or have somewhere to at least lean. This place had none. I am glad I went so I could check it off the list but I'd only comeback if I wanted to eat at an odd time of weekday and in the area. Pretty good coffee shop and brewery walking distance too!
It was ok. I gave it a little bit of a higher review because nothing was really that bad, but I was not impressed. It was good, but not Michelin quality. First of all, this place has a super small ordering area. While I appreciated the efficiency of the ordering once I got in there, they can only take one order at a time. This means that lines snake outside the place and it can take forever to order. I waited in line for about an hour. Not great, but not a dealbreaker. As for the food, the brisket and chipotle sausage were lukewarm by the time I got it to the table. I think they slice and handle the meats so much that it cools quicker. The meats tasted good, but the temperature might be the problem. The sausage was also way too crumbly, but it tasted great! The presentation of the meats could have been better, especially with LeRoy's doing it elevated. I really liked the mac and cheese. That was hot! I actually disliked the BBQ sauces. The original was fine, but the rest were too vinegary. People talk about the service being great. Maybe I was there on a bad day because the service was average. I didn't have an issue, but they didn't wow me. I also found out that I was supposed to get free beer? Where? Why did nobody tell me this? The one saving grace was compared to other higher end BBQ spots, this place was more economical. I paid about $30 for two meats, a drink, and a side. Not too bad! I think I wanted to like this place more, but was disappointed. I gave it a 4 because it was fine and had some good meats. However, it's not as good as LeRoy and I don't know why it (and Interstellar) have a star in the first place. It was fun to try, but I think I'm a one and done
Delicious BBQ! I had the brisket and sausage and both were very flavorful and tender. I ordered my food ahead of time so didn't have to wait in line at all and they sliced it fresh upon arrival. One quick warning for anyone allergic to dairy - I had a reaction after eating this, I believe from the original sausage (it is fully my fault, I didn't even consider that a regular non-cheese sausage would have dairy so not blaming them at all) but just be careful and ask before ordering!
I found bbq SO DIFFICULT to acquire in Austin, even though it's around every corner. The barbecue places tend to be so popular that they either sell out or are closed on odd days. We visited La Barbecue, unplanned, on a suggestion from a local friend. You definitely have to have patience as we waited in line for about an hour before ordering and sitting down. There is a line that forms outside in the hot sun as they only let one customer group in at a time to order at the counter . However, they are thoughtful and they have some complementary umbrellas to help shade you while you're standing outside. Once you get inside the process includes ordering at the register, paying at the register and they will bring it out to your table. We arrived and joined the line around 1 PM and eat around 2 PM. By the time we ordered they added three items to the out of stock list (including the one item I was interested in). The food was fine for me. I'm sure it's so popular because it's amazing to people that love barbecue. I did enjoy the mac & cheese and the slices of bread that I ordered on the side. Overall, give yourself some extra time for parking in the tight parking lot adjacent as well as to wait in line for your food. Arrive early maybe that helps with reducing the wait time!
I was so eager to try La Barbeque after its recent Michelin star acquisition! We got there shortly before 5pm but the line was already out the door and they'd run out of everything except pulled pork and chili. This was a bummer, but we made the best of it and had pulled pork sandwiches + a pint of chili to share. Pulled pork was tender and good, but the chili to me was the winner. Super flavorful and very delicious! Sides were average IMO - potato salad was too mustard heavy for my liking and black beans were just basic, nothing special. We didn't take advantage of this but they also offer customers free beer with the meal. Make sure you do your research and arrive here early if you want to try the chopped brisket which is what they're actually known for! We will be back to give it another try.
The wait was about 35 minutes on a Wednesday but well worth it. You only enter for service when given the signal and there is a no nonsense approach (which I loved). The turkey was moist, perfectly seasoned (no sauce required), and served on a potato roll. The chipotle slaw has the right amount of spice and was not overly wet! The shells and cheese was wonderfully balanced. While the location is small there is plenty of outdoor seating! And I can see why they earned a Michelin star - highly recommend!
I'm grateful that they allow you to order ahead and pick up when you get there. The process was super convenient. However, my meal was hit and miss. The hits: Brisket - absolutely amazing. One of the best I've ever had. Mac&Cheese- I would come back to Austin just for this Mac& cheese. The misses: Sausage- skin was tough, it wasn't sliced and the meat was dry. One of the worst I've had from a bbq place-bordering on criminal. Beans- avoid! No flavor at all. Not even salt. I ate about as much as what you see on the picture. Bread charge- just charge me more for the meat . Why charge for something that should come standard. Not going to break the bank but it was weird. Was I glad I tried it? Yes. Do I recommend this place? Yes as they could've had a bad day with the sausage. 5 stars for the brisket, Mac and ordering ahead (with no minimum). The beans and sausage dropped it down to 3.
My friend and I headed over to la Barbecue (that's pronounced L.A. not like lala land) after hearing that their BBQ is the best in Austin! Now when doing BBQ spots in Austin, everyone wants to know about the wait! We went on a Saturday right around Noon and ended up waiting 90 minutes in line to order. Their playlist was soooo~ good though! Myself and others in line were boppin' to Keyshia Cole & Billie Eilish which made the wait not half bad. The brisket is nice and juicy. Pork ribs were also nicely seasoned, plump and lovely. I really like that they had 4 options of BBQ sauces and enjoyed trying them all. Admittedly though I enjoyed the basic one the best on my proteins. The mac & cheese was spicy and so cheesy, loved this and enjoyed it as leftovers, too! And then I met my match. They only serve the Beef Ribs on weekends (Fri, Sat, Sun) and I so highly recommend them. Oh my goodness, it was the best thing ever. The thick crust was so full of well seasoned flavor, it was heavenly. I wish I could eat this every day for the rest of my life. Open a LA la Barbecue please! :P Staff was nice, food was worth the wait and even the bathrooms were cool here.
Brisket A+ moist, consist throughout, just missing a little kick on the bark like Franklin Pork B- just not hittin with smoke/flavor Pork Rib A+ fall off the bone, great sauces flavor Shells- A really good, had that south west spice and some peppers on there that were good. The line moved in a real weird way only letting one ordering group inside at a time. I could see how this might be frustrating if you were deep in the line. But I had a great experience!

Was told to check this place out while visiting. Not only was I amazed at the line, but when we made it to our turn to order it made perfect sense. The restaurant doesn't have much space inside at its ordering desk. To add to that, our cashier didn't even make us feel rushed. We were able to ask questions and taste test a couple of things just to be sure. Now for the food, it caught me by surprise but this was absolutely the best pulled pork I've had since some solids bbq pulled pork I've had at some barbecues in Tennessee. The brisket was also amazing and not overly fatty even on the fattier pieces. The lean was also not too dry, although the next time I'd just get lean because it was still juicy like I like it. Mac and cheese was also a great dish that we enjoyed. The only thing that we didn't enjoy was the brisket chilli, but that's just because it wasn't up to what we were wanting. We were able to give it to a table next to us who LOVED it and were happy to take it. All and all can't wait to visit this place again on my next visit. And on top of that it's definitely a highly recommended stop for me going forward, to anyone that I know hitting the Austin area. read more

We got here at 11 AM on an overcast and slightly drizzly Friday and still waited an hour. It seems like everyone else had the same idea. But we made friends along the way! Sadly they sold out of beef ribs right before they got to us. The pork ribs and brisket were still tasty. Most people are a huge fan of the Mac, but it was too soupy/creamy for my taste. I actually think the best thing on the menu was their new banana pudding. Overall a fun experience to have in Austin, if you have the time to wait. read more

Yup, I understand the hype. I went on a Sunday afternoon around 12:30 pm, and we waited in line for roughly 45 minutes. Luckily, they weren't out of anything except the beef rib. We ordered brisket, pork ribs, sausage, and the shells and cheese. All were SO delicious - packed with flavor, nicely tender, and omg I could swim in a tub of the shells and cheese. Don't let the long line deter you, it's definitely worth the wait. Also don't miss the party bathrooms while you're there. So fun! read more

Chose la Barbecue because of the Michelin rating. Arrived about 5 minutes after open and the line was already there. Waited 1.5 hours in the 90 degree heat. La Barbecue provided umbrellas and cold water. Waiting in line for BBQ in Austin is par for the course it seems. There is no sample platter option so have to order items separate. Prices are by the pound. As an example, we asked for 2 beef ribs, 2 pork ribs etc. Sauces are available at each table in squeeze bottles. Everything melts in your mouth. Super good, love the brisket. Meats are so rich, much like eating A5 Wagyu. The cucumber Kim Chi helps slice through the fat and cleanses your pallet. Paired with a pint of the la Zilker Beer nicely, which I believe is brewed exclusively for La Barbecue. Plenty of seating inside and around the restaurant in a porch area. read more

We arrived at La Barbecue a little bit before they opened. There is a parking lot and also street parking. When I arrived, I noticed a sign that says 1 group at a time, so whoever you came with. This created longer wait times, even being up front. The staff did provide a sample which was nice of them. The checkout process was easy. The tables outside were nice. Even though the space is narrow, I would improve the line situation by letting in smaller groups, esp pairs of 2 in at the same time. The brisket seasoning/flavoring is amazing, but there were some dry parts and decent fatty areas. I would say it's good, but not worth the line waiting process. Also, as with any bbq place, it's not the cheapest. My 2 slices were almost $20. read more
Easily the best BBQ in East Austin! And easily worth the wait on line for this quality of food. We ordered the pork ribs (tender, juicy even the next day), mac & cheese (great flavor & spice), black beans, pickles, and the sausage sandwich and everything tasted delicious! Staff was friendly. No complaints (except for the flies that tried to come for our food when we ate outside - had to keep spatting them away!). Well deserved Michelin star! read more

One of the requirements I had when we were headed to Austin was to try the Texas barbecue. I had a list of 3 different places I wanted to try but we could only go with one since we were only in town for a few days. I chose la Barbecue because you could preorder smaller amounts than other places like Franklin's. It was also closer to our hotel on Caesar Chavez. I told me husband to look at the menu and tell me what we should preorder. I told him the line might be shorter at la Barbecue than at Franklin's too so he said, "let's play it by ear." Um okay. We took a Lyft over and the line was out the front around the corner of the building. It did not look too long but in hindsight, we could have preordered and come back. We instead waited in line and it took just as long as if we had preordered, so I would have preferred not standing out in misty cold January weather, while under the weather, but that's what we did. Once inside, we ordered at the counter. We were given a small taster of the brisket and that basically set the tone for us. We chose a pound of brisket, a 1/4 pound of pork ribs, a side of pickled jalapenos, and a pint of mac & cheese for our meal. We also got two Mexican Cokes. I may have over-ordered but when you're standing in line like that, you lose all sense of what you are capable of eating. So my eyes were bigger than my stomach. Anyway, we really enjoyed the meats we chose. The brisket was tender and fatty in all the right ways. The pork ribs were fall off of the bone tender. The barbecue sauces we tried went well with the meat but did not overpower the smokiness or char. The mac & cheese was spot on and the pickled jalapenos were so good with the barbecue. We had a lot of leftovers, but they offered up some to go containers and bags so we packed them up and took them back to the hotel. We ended up eating the leftovers before leaving for the airport a couple of days later. Once heated up, it was still delicious and I don't regret ordering the amount we did. The people next to us were definitely wasteful, as they tossed some of theirs, but we weren't . It wasn't until we were there that I realized that la Barbecue had received a Michelin Star for their barbecue in 2024. It was well deserved. So, here's to another one added to my All-Stars list. read more
Definitely a top spot for amazing BBQ in Austin! I arrived on a Sunday 10 minutes before they open at 11:00am. There was a short line already formed that took about an hour to get through. However, they will come around and serve drinks while you wait which is a nice touch. Deliciously seasoned meats, you truly can't go wrong with any choice on the menu! But I definitely recommend the mac & cheese as a side - it was phenomenal. Had no problem finding parking on the side street next to the restaurant and there was plenty of indoor and outdoor seating available. read more

We waited about an hour and couldn't understand why there was only one person cutting meat & why it took another person having to go to the back to retrieve the sides. There were lots of available seats & tables yet lots of people still waiting in line. I don't know. Maybe I'm missing something. I interpret that as a lack of regard for customers. All in all the food was delicious. Oh- there's free beer for those in line. Could be a lifesaver when the Texas sun heats up in the triple digits. read more

Arrived at around 10:30AM on a Sunday and ended up waiting around 2.5 hrs. They only let one party in at a time and the line moved very slowly because of that. On average, it took them around 4 minutes to get from one party to the next but sometimes it took upwards to about 8-10 minutes. I guess the only good thing about that is there will always be an empty table when it gets to your turn because it moves so slow. The most notable items here were the sides (potato salad, mac and cheese, beans) and the brisket and pork ribs. The pork ribs had a nice sweet glaze that I enjoyed. What was not good here were the chipotle and jalapeño sausages, which I could tell were house made (not in a good way) as it was very salty and mealy. Not sure if it's worth the wait for me again but I'm glad I tried once! read more
Got here at 10:20 am on a Friday and the parking lot was actually mostly full already. Craziness. Served by 11:20. * Pork rib: fall off the bone tender. Super flavorful * Beef rib: a little bland, not as tender as everything else. Wasn't my favorite for like $30 a rib. * Brisket: melt in your mouth deliciousness, up there with Franklins for me without as long of a wait. * Jalapeño sausage: not my favorite, overly salted but nice chunks of jalapeno * Mac and cheese: I like the pimento tang to it, super creamy * Cucumber kimchi: ok - nice kick, not super fermented it seems There's plenty of seating inside and out. This place is absolutely delightful. Probably one of the best bbq I've had in Texas. And the servers are very kind and attentive. The ambiance is casual. They love dogs!! And the only requirement for having a dog is that you bring them inside with you to order so everyone can say hi. This place is warm, open and welcome to all. The bbq is very tasty - you can tell each dish is homemade from good quality ingredients. The brisket had beautiful fat rendering, and was perfectly succulent and soft. The sausage has lots of spices - it's divine! The beef rib was tasty but I was honestly so happy with the brisket and the sausage that I might skip it next time due to the $$$ There are also many drink offerings, including alcoholic options and soft drinks. Overall, a delightful experience and I can't wait to go back! read more
This place is certainly worth the hype. I was pleasantly NOT surprised :D The brisket and pork ribs were fantastic. The slaw was okay alone but complimented the food well. Don't sleep on this place! The brisket (both lean and fatty) were amazing and melt in your mouth. It cut easily with just a fork. The crust was very flavorful. The pickles had a nice spice and the vinegar helped cut through the richness of all the meat. Service was great and quick -- super friendly staff. Nice patio seating. If you stick around to eat like I did. Parking lot was full but plenty of street parking nearby Highly recommend coming here if you're in Austin. read more

We met up with some family here for Sunday brunch. Our party got there about an hour before opening and they were first in line. There's definitely a wait like at any bbq spot, but it's worth it! La barbecues brisket is my favorite, as it's very juicy and flavorful. Most of their other meats and dishes seem on the spicier side - the sausage, macaroni and ribs had more spice than I was used to (but I'm also not one to tolerate spice well). The indoor space is small but fun. Just a heads up their bathrooms are funky with color changing lights, but they are also very dark and my toddler was not pleased. read more

My friend and I woke up early to stand in line for this BBQ place we've been hearing about over and over. We stood in line for about 75 minutes until we began eating, and it was WELL WORTH the wait! Being from Kansas City, I'm very critical about BBQ. I can say with full confidence that this is the BEST BBQ I've ever had! The servers were very nice and accommodating, the restaurant was clean and easy to navigate, and the food was unbelievable. I highly recommend the brisket! read more
What a great Austin BBQ experience! My bro was in town from NY and we've been to Terry Black's several times but wanted to try other cool spots here. Interstellar, which is bonkers how good it is was on vacation so La Barbecue got the nod. For August it wasn't too bad (under 95 deg F) so the 40 minute wait was fine. Lots of Austin folks in the line with tons of mustaches which we got a kick out of (maybe it's homage to Freddy Mercury). Anyway, they give a sample of brisket and first thing I noticed was that it was fattier than other briskets - but that made it super tender and it had a great kick to it. So, we went with a pretty standard BBQ plate (photo below) of 1 lb brisket, jalepeno sausage, slaw, pickle, mac & cheese, onions and beans. Also got a couple potato buns to throw a sandwich together. In general, La BBQ food has a great kick/spice to it which we loved. As expected, everything was absolutely fantastic! Really fun vibe, friendly Texans, and a nice decor. I would absolutely take more friends & family here when they visit and can't wait to come back! As far as rankings, it's way up there with the top spots for me, but i would put it a bit behind Terry Black's for brisket as I would prefer a bit less fat (but still loved it!), but the mac and cheese and slaw are probably tops. read more
Sunday 7/28/2024 After my visit last year, I left Austin with the opinion that La barbecue was the best Texas bbq but now I'm back to see if my view still holds up. The service was pretty good. They offer you a small sample of their brisket and they were nice & friendly. I was hoping to try their beef ribs but I arrived at 3 pm which was too late as they were all sold out. I wanted to get a little bit of everything so I got a quarter of: brisket $9.18, pork rib $7.50, turkey $8.10, a side of shells & cheese $5.50, and a jalapeño sausage link $5.25 for a total of $38.46. - The brisket was good: it was tender, flavorful and moist. - The pork rib was pretty good and it might've been my favorite item there (either that or the Brisket). It was a tender and flavorful rib. - The turkey was moist and is likely the best turkey I've had across all my bbq visits. - The shells & cheese was pretty damn good and it's probably the best Mac n cheese I've had when it comes to bbq in general. The Mac n cheese is flavorful, tasty, seasoned, cheesy, and creamy. - The jalapeño sausage was disappointing and it my least favorite item by far. I didn't really mess with the flavor and taste of it. Overall, I can confirm that La barbecue is STILL the best Texas bbq spot that I've experienced. This is a spot that I would surely recommend and return if I'm ever back in the area. Make sure to at least try the ribs, brisket, and shells & cheese on your visit. read more

The place opened at 11 am on Sunday. We got there at 11:02 and the line was wrapped around the corner of the building and down the street. That told us all we needed to know. There is only one party allowed at a time inside the door where you order at the counter. The line moves very slow. We waited in line for almost exactly two hours. Once you order, the food is given to you on a tray right away. By the time we got to the counter, all of the homemade sausage was sold out. My husband got the last beef ribs. They give you a free sample of brisket when ordering. That free sample made me switch from pulled pork to brisket because it melts in your mouth. So good. I ordered the frito pie which is just like a walking taco. Quite spicy with the jalepenos. My husband got beef and pork ribs as well as brisket. We also got sides of beans and Mac and cheese. Both good. The Mac and cheese is liquidy but delish. Some people seemed to have ordered online ahead of time, pick it up, and eat it here. Smart move. read more
Yet another 1 Michelin Star bbq place. The brisket was super moist and very tender, heavy on the pepper and needed more salt 8/10. Sausage was crumbly and reminiscent of chorizo, decent flavor 6.9/10. Pork ribs was the favorite, super juicy and tender with a great texture 9/10. Potato salad was mustard base and I'm not a fan, but others may like that flavor. Another favorite was the Mac and Cheese, Mac cooked excellently and the cheese sauce at jalapeño flavor, but not spicy. Overall 7.6. read more

I ate everything I ordered in less than 10 minutes. Normally I'd pick apart what my taste buds had just gone through, but it was hard to savor and hold back since everything was exactly what I wanted it to be. I went with the sliced brisket sandwich, which had smoke, tenderness, umami, and perfectly balanced accoutrements in the form of pickles and raw white onion. I was glad I dined in because bottles of golden barbecue, barbecue, jalapeño, and vinegar were already stationed at each table. The shells and cheese had just epic queso. Not too thick, and thoroughly seasoned. As a New Jersey native I wanted firmer pasta but it's not a big deal. Other places have far longer waits. Here, you can preorder the day before. If you designate the time you'll show up (I chose 11:30a) then you can have your food effectively right away. They let me add a drink to that preorder when I was physically in the store; I bet I could've added another side dish if I had asked. I also had a Paloma, which I personally prefer to be stronger. Not bad at all though. read more
BBQ here is some of the best that I have had in Austin (or TX), but, unfortunately one star was very close to being knocked off due to the wait beforehand. I wouldn't be upset if the line was unbelievably long and moving - but this line just did not move. There were only approximately 15 or so groups ahead of us and we were in line for well over an hour. I am not sure what made it so slow, but if you come be prepared to wait. We split the beef ribs, wet brisket and sides of slaw, mac and cheese and kimchi pickles. Both the beef ribs and wet brisket were exceptional. I would skip the cole slaw - something did not taste quite right. Other groups ordered the sandwiches, which also looked phenomenal. read more

This place is worth the wait! We got there and the line was around the building! We waited about an hour in line for our turn to enter and place our order. We kinda got the feeling like it was like the scene from Sinfield...the Soup Nazi...place your order and move down the line. Well actually they were very nice, but only 1 group allowed in at a time. Well getting back to the BBQ...the brisket is what we were there for and it did not disappoint! It was so moist and had a peppery crust! It was heavenly! We got several pounds and flew it home with us to Seattle in a YETI cooler! And by the time we got home it was still warm! And still delicious! Highly recommend both...La Barbecue and the YETI cooler! read more

Yes! As you face the front of the restaurant, go into the door on your left. There is lettering on the door that references " PREORDERS "

no we don't. it's stand in line our order ahead of time and pick it up.

Want to visit on a Tuesday for lunch. Is there anything I need to know? Do we need to come early? How busy is it in a Tuesday afternoon?
There's always a line - usually at least 30 minutes. I've been there before opening and been the 30th person in line. It's worth the wait though!
Do they still offer free beer for those waiting in line?
Not since they moved to the brick and mortar location. There is beer for purchase from the Quickie Pickie and it's just as delicious as the Q
Is it possible to drop by Saturday at 4:30 pm? Will we be able to get in or will we be turned away?
I've done it before around the holidays. But they're usually sold out by then. Just call ahead.
If I pre-order my food can I get meat by the half or fourth pound or do I have to order it in full pound increments? When I looked at the pre orders online it seemed I could only do full pound amounts
I'm fairly certain they only allow pre-ordering by the pound. But if you pre-order, they do let you eat it there as opposed to some other BBQ places in the area that you require you to take it out.
How's the lunch crowd on a Friday?
I was there on a Tuesday and the wait was more than an hour. It would not be less on a Friday. If you order online 3 days in advance, you can skip the line and pick up your order at the window on the side patio. That's what I would do in the future.… Read more

I would definitely recommend ordering online! You completely skip the line- there's a window in the back where you just let them know you're there and you can tell them that you plan on eating onsite (other BBQ places force you to take it to go). We… Read more
If I pre-order and pick up late afternoon, is it guaranteed that I receive the order? I am afraid they will run out of meats :(
It's rare that they're open much past 4 and the preorders usually need a couple of days.
Will there still be food if I get in line at noon or 1pm on a Friday?
