La Boite en Bois is a quaint-small French restaurant in a beautiful neighborhood on Manhattan, NYC on top of that if you happen to go in a glorious weather day you would be considering your self lucky. We were the first customers, which it worked for us with a last minute reservation. The decor gives the feeling of intimacy, tables for 2 or 4. The maître d' was pleasant showing his knowledge in the hospitality business. The menu is all French inspired. We were very pleased. We skipped dessert my favorite, had to run to The Odyssey. This place has been featured in Seinfeld but is not a real tourist spot. It the service is great. It is a small downstairs spot in upper west side so you get the theatre crowd. It's a French bistro so interior is wood, with a bunch of French pictures and wine etc. nicely decorated but dated. (That's not necessarily a bad thing ) The food is where they get dinged. The French onion soup was great. The Niçoise salad was not good. Lacking in presentation lacking in composition and lacking I flavor. The Burger was so so. Too many onions , Patty didn't taste fresh. Visiting NYC again and this was my first restaurant stop with my friend. A very quaint and intimate French restaurant with some outdoor seating along with a small indoor dining area. The staff were friendly and provided really good service. The drinks were prepared at the front of the restaurant by the host stand. I had some well made Cosmos while my friend enjoyed the Sidecar. I liked how they had individual shakers and the cocktail would be poured in front of you which made it a fun experience. For my entree, I got their Duck Confit Salad while my friend got their Roasted Duck. My salad was large and all the ingredients paired great together. A very tasty meal with well cooked duck. We also ended up sharing their Classic Crème Brûlée. It had a nice caramelized coating and fresh berries. Always a great and light dessert to end a meal with. I have been coming here pre-performance since the 1980s, and while it has changed over the years (no price fixe, some menu changes, etc) -I have come to expect a solid French meal with good service. No longer. I had a guest from out of town join me last night and I was ashamed of having brought her here. The hostess was surly, hostile. My guest said "she seemed like a serial killer". Our order was ignored, had to be requested again. The restaurant is tight, tables close together, so I expect to be crowded- however, the waiter and the hostess squeezed behind me- no attempt to single file and almost knocked me off my chair without an apology. I liked my crab cake app, my guest did not care for the pate. The poached salmon was overdone. Profiteroles were the only dish that really hit the mark. But the service was so awful, aggressively so, I will not be back. read more

Let's start with the table spacing....it's practically nonexistent, expect less than one foot between tables with contortionist moves necessary to exit from the wall seat. Despite the intimate romantic decor, private convos are challenging here; but on the plus side we had a nice chat with the ppl at adjacent table lol. Location is perfect for pre or post Lincoln Center attendees. The Vittles: Escargot app served in parley-flecked bubbling hot butter was delicious, perfect to mop up with the toasted French bread served on arrival. (Bread carried a $3.00 surcharge). Partner loved his duck, crispy skin and moist meat made this dish a winner. My beef bourguignon (a special of the day) was generously portioned but bland, not made with the pearl onions and rich wine taste one would expect of of this dish. We skipped dessert this time due to full tummies, but the homemade chocolate mousse is calling my name for next visit. Great french spot, service a 4. Kinda aloof, not really interested in what was our passion. Pate and wine list exceptional a lot of good entrées. My wife wanted mussels and they were great based in a tomato sauce as opposed to a white wine garlic sauce, which we get in Los Angeles. Fantastic fries. So we booked an OpenTable and it's a s sweet, wonderful small restaurant on the upper west side of New York. Had a great table back toward the kitchen, the only thing I asked for on OpenTable was to celebrate my wife's birthday. That obviously, was not conveyed to anyone on the restaurant staff. That's disappointing and reason enough for a four star. Not that we can't afford a dessert but when OpenTable offers a what's special? You expect a restaurant to at least acknowledge a special occasion, this staff did not. So, so when you book with OpenTable, don't expect anyone to acknowledge your request. Just off the corner of 68th and Columbus Ave the Lincoln Center area is La Boite en Bois. It is a small restaurant. The picture is deceiving because it looks as if it is street level, but you need to walk down a flight of stairs which is difficult for many older people. It was a hot NY day when we were there and the air conditioning was not great. There were 6 of us. The service was slow, but we were having a reunion, so it didn't bother us. The appetizers came out and then there was a lag for dinner. I ended up having the Seafood Crepes in Mushroom Sauce which was good. The server made a mistake and didn't put my order in and I ate after everyone else. It wasn't a great experience for me. read more

On a completely empty afternoon, we arrived for an early afternoon lunch. Understandably, the two waiters appeared bored, but that is no excuse for sub-par and condescending service. We were seated at the table in the far back, nearest the bathrooms. Neither waiter checked in on our table after our meal was served, inquired if we'd like another glass of wine, nor refilled our water glasses. The most insulting thing was the automatic 25% tip added to our bill. We were a table of three and my mother paid it without consulting with me. Unfortunately, we will not be returning. If you make a reservation for this restaurant be aware that you may arrive only to be told they have no record of it and have no tables available. We made our reservation on OpenTable, and had all the confirmation emails to show the staff, but were told they didn't have it in their system and we were out of luck. Even though the restaurant is cramped (the restaurant calls it "cozy"), diners are practically on top of each other (the restaurant calls it "intimate"), and navigating down the steps to get into the restaurant should be left only to those who also qualify for hazardous duty pay, we overlooked these faults because one of us liked the special they were serving the night after we discovered it a few years ago. I wish I had better things to say.. This restaurant was recommended to me by a girlfriend that had it on her "to check out" list and I happened to be in the area for a ballet show. My initial impression of the place was that it was a cute little French restaurant and it was booked out for indoor seating ( which after my visit I am shocked they even get booked out). The service was nice. They did come to check once in a while we were eating however, my biggest issue here is that the food was not up to par with most French restaurants I have visited throughout the city. More like French inspired but not authentically French. Now here is why. I ordered the French onion soup and it tasted like it was not made with some beef stock nor deglazed with wine. It was a water down version of what a French onion soup usually is, not very rich. The french soup was a 5/10. Now this should've been a sign to me, on how the rest of the meal was going to go. My grandmother ordered the salmon Niçoise salad, I did not try her dish. She did seem to enjoy it however, from just looking at the serving of the salmon, there were 3 pieces of salmon for a salad that markets it itself as grilled salmon with a nicoise salad I would expect a much bigger portion of salmon and specially for the price that I'm paying. No rating here, as it would not be fair since I did not try it. The mussels (6/10). They were not traditionally made the way that most French restaurants make it with white wine and onions. It was more of a tomato base for them. This was expressed to me ahead of ordering them, and I was happy to try a different version of this. To call these mussels "best selling " is a shock to me. Now they were not bad but I do feel like they could've added a special ingredient or some sort of ingredient that made it feel a little bit more special. I don't go out to eat, to eat something I can easily make it home. There so many other ingredients that could spice up the dish and where it's not so simple and boring. Don't get me wrong. There are great simple dishes out there that are done right however, this simple way too boring and not done right (mussels were over steamed ) I did not taste the love here or creativity. Whenever I go out to eat, I do look for that factor, I unfortunately did not find. I could not finish the whole meal because it was actually large portion, could've easily been shared by two people. I asked if I could take it to go, but unfortunately, I was told that "I COULD NOT TAKE THE REST OF MUSSELS TO GO BECAUSE THEY CAN GO BAD". This is the first time in my life that I have ever been told this... There's gotta be some sort of sign somewhere in the menu that states that because that is just crazy to me. Final verdict : I'm surprised this restaurant is still open and running given the amount of great French restaurants that we actually have in the city. Do not recommend. Will not come again. Sorry but do better. Not worth it for a New Yorker with certain cuisine standards. read more

Ambience is the worst. Dining in a basement, damp, the Asian waiter's attitude is even colder. The duck costs $56 but it's horrible, worse than Chinatown duck hanging in the supermarket. I think it's owned by Vietnamese not French. Only thing good is the charcuterie board. read more

--------FOOD SAFETY ISSUE!! -------- Do not come here!! My parents visited La Boite en Bois last weekend and found a steel nail/screw in their food. Yes, a nail!! The waiter/kitchen admitted the nail was from their kitchen. It is scary to think my parents could've been hurt from eating that entree. Imagine if they just bit into the food without looking closer. The restaurant merely provided two free steak entrees (worth ~$90) which is far from compensating for the poor experience and trauma experienced. The restaurant is extremely lucky they did not eat the nail, otherwise it would obviously be lawsuit worthy. Anyone could have just scooped up a bite without looking. Imagine an elderly person, a kid, or anyone just eating their food normally could have been sent to the hospital immediately. There really does not need to be any more said here. They clearly did not provide sufficient compensation or remorse. Service was well below average for a restaurant that is supposed to be somewhat nice. They did not do anything unless called up on or asked. No bread or even plates / silverware with the bread and no water refills unless asked. read more

Classic bistro that happens to be a very popular local eatery with the neighborhood. Older sophisticated crowd means prices are inflated, which is understandable. The place is packed at 530 with a nice holiday vibe. Enjoyed the moules/frites with a refreshing glass of Sancerre while gossiping with my dear cousin who has been dining here for decades. Will probably return with her for more gossip and moules next year. read more

We picked La Boite en Bois for a romantic b'day dinner mostly because it was there back in the '80 when I lived in the neighborhood. There aren't too many classic French bistros left in NYC, and this class serves well executed solid classic French food at reasonable prices. The dining room is tiny but service is quick and competent. We will return here in the future. read more

Used to come here a lot when I lived in the area but recent trip was quite disappointing. The appetizers were delicious but all the main courses left a lot to be desired. Seemed like subpar ingredients (eg wrong cut of meats) were being used to keep costs down whilst sacrificing quality and the service was terrible. Waiters were in a rush to get your orders but then you become invisible after you finish your meal and want to order coffee/dessert/get the check. The ambiance is still charming and I hope the restaurant can turn it around. read more

Tables small and tight...even for a NYer I usually start my reviews with the food...so here goes. The Endive Salad and French Onion Soup were spectacular. The Boeuf Bourguignon special was perfectly acceptable and the Bread and Butter basket worth every penny. The Bordeaux by the glass was just OK but they did have an excellent Krombacher non-alcoholic beer. And unlike some of the other reviewers, our server was attentive and efficient. But sitting at one of the tightly packed tables for two in the back started off feeling odd and shortly thereafter (once the restaurant was full) became quite unpleasant. Two drinks, two waters, two apps, and the bread basket struggled to fit on the table. With the tables on both sides occupied one had to be careful of one's elbows and getting out to use the restroom was quite out of the question. And my spouse's chair was constantly bumped by people headed to/from the kitchen and bathroom. I can't imagine returning except to sit outside. And I offer my sincere apologies to all those other reviewers whose opinions I discounted before making my reservation...the tables *are* absurdly tight even for NYC. read more

Typically I like to leave even keeled reviews about establishments. And for La Boite en Bois, I will do my best. I ordered delivery for the first time, so we'll put my review through that lens. As far as I'm concerned, there are three aspects to delivery, the food, the delivery service itself, and in the event of a problem, the customer service. Let's begin with delivery - On time. Hot. No complaints. So, let's *really* begin with the food - it's good. I've eaten at this place in-person before. The restaurant is cute, and it's serves classic French cuisine. It's not fancy food, it's solid bistro fare. The kind of stuff that you would pop-in locally and if you were in Paris, is as much about the people watching as it was about the food. We ordered a pasta dish (I know, not French) which was tasty and handsomely adorned with a ton of seafood. The value was there. The flavors were there. The aroma was a tad seafoody, but it didn't translate to the flavor. We also ordered a burger, which arrived done-to-order, and the sautéed onions really enhanced the thing. The fries were not good. I assume they were frozen at some point. They lacked body and were anemic in color. Finally we received the roast chicken. Well seasoned, still moist on delivery. It was a no-frills classic prep, and overall pretty darned good. Notice I said "received." - It's not what we ordered. So onto customer service. Delivery mistakes happen all the time. You order A and you get B. And typically, you call up the restaurant and you either get refunded the difference between the two dishes, or they'll send over a new one. With the amount of volume that restaurants do, seems like it's a quick problem to solve to any customer's satisfaction. Unfortunately, at La Boite en Bois, that wasn't the case. When we called to get the problem remedied, instead of taking me at my word (a.k.a. the customer), apparently the Kitchen and Packer were "100% positive that they prepared and delivered the right thing." For what it's worth I ordered the Roast Duck Dinner, a $14 dollar difference to the Roast Chicken. In marketing, there's a thing called the "Cost Per Acquisition." And that's how much a company is willing to spend to get a new customer. So keep in mind that in this case, the CPA is $14. Obtuse, the Kitchen and Packer (communicating through the server, who is now acting as ombudsperson), were basically calling me, the customer, a liar. It's an interesting strategy. Let's see if it pays off. The hoop they wanted me to jump through was to send them a photo of the chicken. Only after they suggested that I was trying to get a free meal. I remind you that the difference was $14. A simple refund. But ooooooookay...... Still annoyed, I sent the photo of the chicken. Good news everyone. They confirmed that it was, in fact, chicken. Phew. I promptly got a call from the server informing me that they would refund me for the entire dish (the duck which I paid for, not the chicken). I'm satisfied with the refund. It's appropriate. But what about the chef? The expediter? Surely they don't care, but do they still feel 100% confident that they prepped the right thing? 100% that they packed the right thing? I dunno folks, that confidence should probably be kicked back to 99%. Not to get too philosophical, but if you'll afford me the tangent, this is the problem in dealing with absolutes: You shouldn't be 100% sure of anything, unless it's demonstrable and repeatable - like the scientific method. And even then, would you stake $14 on your reputation. So to that end, let's talk in absolutes. I'm 100% sure that the restaurant doesn't really want to lose a customer over $14. I'm also 100% sure that they don't want me to have this story to tell my friends in the neighborhood. You know, when we're walking by, or if we're just hanging out talking about places to order dinner from. I'm 100% sure that the entire nonsense could have been avoided by some consideration to the veracity of the customers. I'm 100% sure that I can tell the difference between chicken and duck. And because I don't like dealing with absolutes, I'm 99% sure I won't be back.
