A Genuinely French, Neighborhood Gem This authentic, lovely, VERY French Bistro serves French favorites in a charming, townhouse setting. The host (Xavier) and owner (Virginia) are attentive, very warm, jovial, accommodating and very French. The food is so authentically good! The appetizers are tasty, especially the beet carpaccio with goat cheese, and soups. (The French onion soup is, arguably, the best we've ever had. My son loves their fish soup.) During our many visits, we have thoroughly enjoyed the mussels in various, delightful preparations (Provençal is our personal favorite). When they have a Berkshire pork chop or rack of lamb special, we have enjoyed the perfectly cooked and seasoned meats. (Again, the pork at Bistro Vendome, is the BEST we've ever had. It is moist, perfectly cooked and so flavorful.) The accompanying French fries or potato gratin are decadently yummy, rich and well seasoned. (We also have previously enjoyed the delicious escargot.) The menu changes seasonally, with options maximizing the freshest availability of in-season ingredients. The desserts are reminiscent of the best patisseries in Paris. Three of us had a Saturday night 7PM reservation around the corner at Morso, only to walk up to the restaurant and seeing it dark. A sign in the window thanking it's customers for years of patronage. So what to do?? Checked a few places nearby that were full, and ended up at Bistro Vendome. It was pretty busy, so we gingerly asked the Maitre d' if we could get a table as a walk-in and he said yes, in about 15 minutes. He was very kind as opposed to the other two restauants we tried first. We had a drink at the bar, and were soon called to the table. Place has that nice bistro vibe, and the service throughout was excellent. Ordered Shrimp Cocktail, Tuna Tartare, and onion soup for apps. All were great, and the soup was steaming! I had the roast chicken, which was perfectly cooked and well seasoned in a delicious savory sauce. Wife had Beouf Borgonion which was a good hearty dish in this cold weather. Third person had the branzino. Topped off with profiteroles and a buttery apple tart a la mode. A potentially disaster of an evening turned into a great one, thanks to the excellent food, service, and ambiance at Bistro Vendome. We'll be back! read more

As a French who has been living in NYC for the last 30 years I grew tired of NYC French menus (mesclun, onion soup, tartar, nicoise, snails, salmon filet, mussels, hanger steak, Bourguignon, etc....). Of course Bistro Vendome offers some French classics but they do it better than anything I've had since the 90'. The seasoning of the beef tartar for example is the best I've ever had (including France). I would torture the Chef for the sauce served with the Scallops. Service is attentive without being annoying. Timing between appetizers and entrées is ideal. Least but not last, the wine list is diverse and interesting and...... not highway robbery! Many French restaurants disappeared in the last 30 years. Only the strongest survived. Bistro Vendome is one of them. Merci! read more

Came here at our Mother's request. This mom and pop is the absolute best. The service is great as well as the food. We had the garlic mussels, YUM- my sister in law had the frogs legs that were delish and my mother and I shared the mussels along with the steak; all fantastic. Perfectly seasoned. This restaurant is phenomenal. Truly French. It's a cozy ambience and a bit off the beaten track but 1000% worth it.

While the place is very nice looking, the food was meh to yuck. The bread was mediocre and the butter was tasteless (maybe it wasn't butter)- the oil we requested, however, was good. Two of us had the bronzino, which sounded great (artichokes), but it was drowned in oil and the fish didn't taste good--undercooked and under-seasoned. Someone had a French onion soup that seemed fine, but the beef Bourgogne didn't taste good and the sirloin was fatty, the Bearnaise sauce was too rich even for that kind of sauce, the duck confit needed sauce, and the profiteroles were just ice cream with thin chocolate sauce plus a tasteless crust. We ordered coffees that didn't come so they were taken off the bill. read more

In 2018, my ex at the time and I broke up and I left public accounting to pursue a not so toxic and happier moment in industry. I decided to join Equinox as a way to make myself got to the gym. If you are spending $200+ a month on membership, you end up going to at least break even.. I took a boxing class and met a bunch of like-minded women and we've been friends ever since. However, life took its course and we all got busy with work, personal, or work and person that we do not take classes together anymore... After a long time, some of us decided to meet up for a brunch on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Someone suggested this place so we went here since the east side of the city is more convenient than the west for us. I pass this area every week to go boxing, but it is tucked away in a small street to be seen. It was a bit "hard" to find, but it is such a cute little roustic place. The girls got the lamb chops because it was recommended by a mutual friend and I got mussels escargot style. My mussels were fine, but oh my gracious, the lamb was the best I've ever had. There was one partially eaten lamb and I had to take it home. French onion soup was fine, but by the time it came to us, the cheese solidified and it seems they burnt the cheese a bit. A bit bitterness from the cheese. However, the soup itself had such good flavor. For dessert, we had creme brulee. Good custard, but the sugar on top needed more melting. We were crunching on the semi melted sugar bits. Cocktails were delicious ! I got the Place Vendome because 1. vodka 2. it has the restaurant's name. Duh! Boy after two or three, did it creep up on me. I will 100% go back here and get the lamb. It comes with a potato gratin and a side salad I think? The best lamb chops I had ever! Parlez-vous français?! Nope, me either but this place fuckin rocks. It was cold out earlier and I had to go return something at the TJMaxx on 59th & 1st so I did a quick search on Yelp for "French Onion Soup" in that area and selected the filter "Outdoor seating". Yelp did not point me in the wrong direction! Saw the overall star rating and chose to check out their photos. Loved their patio and food photos did not disappoint. They have awesome outdoor seating with heaters AND plexiglass dividing the tables. My boyfriend and I sat outside (they have outdoor heaters) and I started with a glass of champagne and the tuna tartar. It was wonderful! Those little spicy wasabi-tasting dollops around the tuna and cucumbers were kick-ass. Then we got two French Onion soups which came out piping hot (important while dining outside in 35 degree weather), ooey gooey, flavorful and all around made my panties DANCE. Service was 10/10. Why? Our waiter plus two managers came to check in and see how we liked our food and I never had to ask for anything. Everyone was wearing their masks above their nose which made me feel very safe. Cannot wait to come back and order the lobster salad since we were t that hungry today, just really wanted to get out of the house while I was in the area doing a return at a store. This is only a short walk to my apartment (10 blocks or so) and I will be coming back next week for sure! read more

I met up with friends for dinner here and really enjoyed my steak. It was perfectly prepared/sliced and served with bearnaise sauce, fries and salad. My friends had the mussels, which are served in several different styles. I tasted the curry mussels and they were delicious! I got there a little late so I didn't order an appetizer, but I snuck a taste of the escargot, which was outstanding. I eyed one of my friend's steak tartare and made a mental note to order that next time. Drinks and wine were great. Service was wonderful. We were seated in the beautiful corner booth with a lovely view of the restaurant. We shared: - French Onion Soup: 5/5 absolutely delicious. Just how you hope French onion soup will taste -The Seasonal Cassoulet: 4.5/5 great Smokey flavor with tender meat and served with beans and veggies -Steak Tartare: 5/5 perfect, and a very generous portion, served with a few slices of toasted bread that weren't too toasted, a yummy side salad, and excellent French fries. We took a look at the dessert menu but were too full to get anything. But I guess my husband wrote it was my birthday on our reservation and they brought out a little vanilla ice cream with a candle! Very thoughtful, and probably the best vanilla ice cream I've ever had - so creamy and flavorful! I can't wait to come back and try more menu items and will definitely leave room for dessert! This is an old school French Bistro and it took a bit too long for me to try this place. I was here with two others and we enjoyed just about everything. The service here was friendly and efficient coming over when needed but not being intrusive. They answer any questions and gave recommendations along with the specials (which one person partook in for their appetizer.) In terms of a drink, I had the 2019 Muscadet from Domaine de La Pinardière which was $13. As expected for a muscadet, the wine had a crispness and some melon like sweetness and it was fine with a reasonable sized pour and another person had some red wine which they like also. To start, I ordered the French onion soup gratinée ($15.) The French onion soup was fantastic and honestly one of the best ones I have had in the city. The broth was rich and there was a good amount of cheese with my only minor complaint is that I prefer a little bit more bread inside to soak up but that was easily fixed with some of the house bread. Another person got a special of the day which was uniquely a chestnut soup which I tried a bit of which I assume was the same price or something very similar. The soup had a very pleasant texture with some nice nuttiness and while I preferred mine, I think it was just because mine was exceptional. In terms of my main dish, I thought of going for one of the other daily specials but I decided to go for cassoulet (34$) which is a a hearty stew made from white beans/haricot blanc. The meat is a bit different depending on the bistro and they had one of the usual being pork shank and duck confit. The pork shank was a little bit too fatty for my liking but the duck confit was exceptional. It was a rich as expected and overall it was fine but I would order something different next time. The other people had the 10 oz hanger steak (38$) which had a choice of sauces (she went with the shallot) and the last person had the pike & crawfish quenelle (33$) which had basmati vegetables rice and lobster sauce. The hanger steak was perfectly cooked medium rare and the fries were as expected for a bistro and the shallot sauce (as recommended by me as she asked me what I thought would be good) was excellent being not too sweet. The quenelle was also fantastic with a nice texture and the sauce was very tasty also. For once in that group, I got the worst main dish and next time I would just go with the beef bourguignon or perhaps the confit or a steak. The dessert menu online is missing a few things and I personally got the floating island or ile flottante (I believe 10$) which is a now uncommonly found French dessert consisting of a #meringue "floating" over a bed of creme anglaise topped with slivered almonds as I wanted something lighter. The meringue had a nice texture with the almonds helping and overall it was good. The other two shared the apple tart which was fine also. The desserts overall were alright and perfectly fine for a French Bistro; not exceptional but fine. Overall the food here was very good although I personally would not get the cassoulet again (to be honest I'm not sure why I keep on ordering this when a a few places have just spoiled me with this dish.) The prices are a bit high but it's an old-school French bistro in the Midtown East so I'm not exactly sure what else would be expected. Very good place though if you want to pay a bit more, there's a couple spots nearby which are a tad better. Mid 4. read more

The scallops are absolutely delicious. French fries which are usually crispy and flavorful were tasteless and soggy. Better to eat in than take out. Very expensive but it's the only restaurant I'd ever eat scallops in and I don't like fish! I'm addicted to these and the orzo that comes with it, used to be risotto. Out of this world. Artichoke Salad with Dijon dressing is perfection. Crispy Goat Cheese and beets is another appetizer winner. My daughter loves the mussels and could easily eat two dozen. Such a great restaurant with amazing food and service. My boyfriend kept commenting throughout our meal here how this was the best food we'd had in a long time. SETTING: came for a dinner reservation for two people on a Friday night for 8:45pm. When we arrived, the restaurant was busy with every table was taken. I live nearby and there always seems to be a crowd waiting outside. It's a beautiful & cozy restaurant with a bar in the front, smaller booths and tables towards the back and a second floor that looks out onto the first floor like a loft space / balcony. There are ~five or so tables up there, with doors opening out onto a patio space with more tables. The outdoor space was closed that night due to the weather). FOOD: the food was excellent. We ordered the Thai style mussels and French onion soup for our appetizers. The sauce they used for the mussels was incredible- creamy, rich, savory and the perfect amount of spice. Soaked our bread in it and basically lapped it up with a spoon. Delicious! The French onion soup was the best I've ever had. The broth was so perfectly savory with just the right amount of cheese / soaked bread. Would highly recommend, this is a must! For our entrees we ordered the special for the night, which was veal served with mashed potatoes. We also ordered the cheese ravioli. Again, for both dishes- we both agreed (1) best mashed potatoes we've ever had (2) best ravioli we've ever had. We don't say that easily.... which I think speaks to how amazing the food is here. Not exaggerating! The veal was also really delicious and fatty, perfectly cooked and seasoned. SERVICE: our waiter was really great and told us when we wanted to order another appetizer that we had gotten enough food. Thank god because it was a struggle towards the end to finish all that food. VERDICT: so happy to have found this place- it will be my l new favorite neighborhood spot for dinner. I will definitely be back and hope to become a regular here ! While my friend and I were standing outside of the restaurant waiting for the rest of our party to arrive, a man who was about to head into the restaurant let us know how amazing this restaurant is. Though the dinner menu didn't really call out to me, his words of affirmation made me feel a little bit better about the birthday girl choosing Vendome Bistro. It's an elegant setting with two floors. I ordered the scallop risotto ($32) and it was so delicious. It's almost as good as my favorite scallop risotto at Upstate. The perfectly seared scallops tasted so fresh but the risotto was just a tiny bit too salty. One of my friends ordered the fish soup ($15) and it was so fishy. I had a taste and gagged. My friend couldn't bring herself to continue drinking it either. I felt like they could've taken out the fishiness with ginger or some other complementary ingredient. The side of fries ($8) were pretty good. It's not hard to make fries but it's easy to make mediocre fries, and this place did not make mediocre fries. My friend got the mussels and added a side of salad for $8. The salad was extremely not worth it!! Super small portion and if wasn't even anything fancy. Dessert was amazing, albeit pricey. I'm not a big fan of apple pies/tarts but I think their apple tart is the only one I genuinely like! It came with a scoop of ice cream. We also got the profiteroles - cream puffs with ice cream and chocolate sauce? Couldn't stop eating it! Additionally, towards the beginning of the meal, I ran down to tell one of the hosts/managers the same point about the birthday. Dessert comes and goes with NO acknowledgement of the birthday...no candle, no "Happy Birthday" written in chocolate...nada. Additionally, the waiters here all have sour faces on. No engagement, no interest nor inquiry into the table. The only time we saw our waitress was to take our orders, then she disappeared. They clearly don't want to be there....which makes us not want to be there. Won't be returning with the plentiful delicious options the city has to offer. read more

Great French neighborhood bistro located in Sutton Place. It's a good idea to make reservations as it gets busy at times; especially on the weekend. They have a bar where you can eat and or drink. It has French culture, as the staff is mostly from France or a French speaking country. The menus are seasonal and many dishes are good to try at least once. You can always get mussels with various sauces and pomme frites. There is a classic hamburger, steak and steak frites. An appetizer if onion soup and escargot are available. The duck or lamb are good. There is a garden for the spring/ summer in back. Two levels of dining make the restaurant layout seem slightly larger. It's good for couples, solo or with friends. It seems to be medium range in price as it's not haute cuisine, but it's not super casual. There are impressionist style posters of Parisian ladies, cafés/cabaret, and lifestyle scenes, the expressions are written in French. read more

Bistro Vendome WAS one of my favorite French bistros but on this occasion really fell short. The ambiance is cool located in a unique townhouse on the UES. But this night, the food was really off and the service was ok, until one of the servers accidentally spilled a sauce on me when delivering a dish to the table. You'd think they offer more than just an apology for the mishap. And for the price we paid, definitely expected better. And my partner whose French, wasn't impressed at all and felt some of the service not friendly at all. Perhaps an off night but unfortunately doubt will return anytime soon. With so many great restaurants in this city, why chance it. But give it a try, perhaps your experience will be better. read more
