My husband and I have been going to La Botana for the past 9 years or so. We went yesterday (a Tuesday evening, so not ultra busy) with my big brother, as he is moving away from Tucson and we wanted to have a little send-off dinner for him before he left. When we first arrived, we were told to sit anywhere we want. Ok, fine--so we sat outside on the patio, and the only table that was fully in the shade away from the blinding evening sun was a 6-seater... but there were many other tables open in the patio, and we were specifically told to "sit anywhere you would like". After sitting at the table, the very rude female server came out and asked how many were in our party, and we told her three of us. And she said she was going inside to talk to the boss. .....Um, ohhhkayyy? Minutes later the male server came out and told us we have to move, as they have a large (he said 15 people, but it ended up being more like five or something) party coming in, and we can't sit there. Well, maybe don't tell people to sit wherever they want? Or put a "Reserved" sign on the table? It wasn't THAT big of a deal, just annoying to start out that way.
So, next up, ordering. I took a while to get menus. They asked us what we wanted to drink before we ever got menus. I was like, "I don't know, can I see a menu?" So finally, we got menus and ordered drinks. A margarita each for my husband and I, and my brother got a beer. About 10 minutes later, my husband's margarita and my bro's beer came out, but not my drink. So I kindly (and honestly, very patiently) asked the female server, "Is my margarita on the way?" and she looked at me and bugged her eyes out and said "YESSSS, it is coming." Like, how dare I ask her was the feeling I got. So I said, "Ok, just wanted to make sure y'all heard me when I ordered it, no problem." And I said thanks, and she just blankly looked at me and walked away. Guess I made her angry? Anyway, about another 10 minutes later, my margarita finally came. In my experience, women and children are generally served first, if anyone has to wait it is usually the guys at the table. I know this isn't a hard and fast rule, just what I have always been used to going to restaurants. And I thought it was sort of strange that they would bring out the men's drinks, and make me wait another 10 minutes to get mine. But I was just glad to be there with my husband and my brother, so moving on, I thought the night would get better.
So we ordered our food... I had to order something non-spicy, as I'm having an issue with my tongue and literally everything no matter how slightly-spicy it is, somehow irritates me to the point of tears. I was very careful about my ordering because I did not want to order something that would be unintentionally spicy and have to send it back. I do not like being a pain like that when I go out to eat, so I ask questions before I order to make sure that I'm ordering something that is not spicy at all. The male server did help me find something non-spicy, but I got the impression from some of his comments that he found me to be a bit if a hassle. I was polite and SO NOT a "Karen"-type creature throughout the whole process of ordering.
My husband's food and my brother's food came before mine, and I had to wait another few minutes for my dinner (wow, big shocker at this point). And neither server ever came back to check and see how everything was, or if we needed anything else. My brother's Sonoran dog bolillo rolls were super hard and crusty (either old or sat under a heating lamp for too long), and he barely touched his food. My dinner was ok, even though it contained the poblano peppers I specifically asked to have omitted. But again, no chance to mention it, because nobody followed up with our table.
By the time we got our check (which we had to wait quite a while for after we requested it), I just wanted to get out of there, so I quickly paid the bill--but I only left a 12.5% tip. I didn't feel a higher percentage was deserved. for the service we got.
Mostly, the food there is delicious. The margaritas are ok, but WAY overpriced. The service, however--it really needs some improvement! And I recall my very first review I ever did on this restaurant was also for bad service. I feel like perhaps the owners or the management have changed since then, but for whatever reason, the service hasn't much improved.... which makes me sad, because I really want to love this place. People go out to eat because they want not just the food, but the experience. And the experience definitely includes being served by a nice human who wants to leave you with a good memory of your meal. I wish my memory of sending my brother off on his journey from Tucson was happier. I have no desire to return to La Botana anytime soon if this is how they plan on treating their guests. read more
