Came by looking for a nearby spot for good Mexican food and this place mostly delivered. Nice greeting and friendly service. Instead of free chips and salsa, they gave me TOSTADAS with salsa and refried beans. Would have preferred CHIPS but hey, it was free and I liked the house salsa. Ordered horchata to drink and it was too watery. Ordered the shrimp enchiladas and really liked it! Turns out this is a local chain with at least a few restaurants in the area. Friends recommended La Cabanita to us, so we came here on a Saturday at lunch time. Happily, it was not crowded. We sat at a corner table and were served by a pleasant male waiter. My wife ordered a chile rellano and an enchilda. I ordered camarones diabla, one of my favorite dishes. My wife had a coke and I had water. My wife really enjoyed her food, and there was plenty of it, as she brought some home. In my dish, the shrimp were nice and plump, which was great, and the sauce was flavorful, though not as good as at another place I frequent. There were small pieces of mushroom, but there were also a lot of strips of onion, which I'm not a fan of. Just my personal taste. They charge $3.50 for a soda, and for that price, my wife asked for a refill to go. She thought our server was perhaps a bit displeased that she made this request, but we feel that it is reasonable, given the price tag for soda that comes from a machine. All in all, we enjoyed our experience at La Cabanita, and will return, we happen to be in the area (we live in Star). read more

Perfectly prepared carnitas served with really tasty beans and rice. A nice scoop of guacamole along with what is known as salsa cruda (Pico de Gallo for all Gringos). Choice of flour or corn tortillas. Very filling. The tostada is a massive one. Lots of fresh ingredients and you can add a selection of meats. I had high hopes for this place considering the reviews online. We walked in and were not greeted even though there were 2 servers. We assumed we had to seat ourselves, so we picked a table close to the bar. After about 4 minutes, a server came to our table and handed up sticky menus that had an odd odor to them. We decided to go with the Thursday Super Green Chili Pork Burrito and the Super Ground Beef Burrito. I loved the obviously homemade refried beans with cheese, though they were not very warm. The salsa was very good as well, though I would have loved a basket of chips instead of break-your-own tortillas. Even though it was Happy Hour, we opted for the Cadillac Margarita which was not on the HH menu - $11.90 for a pour-your-own tequila in a large plastic cup; I found the price a little high for what you get though I appreciated the opportunity to tequila it up as much as I wanted. We had a side water, which tasted like liquid chemicals. Husband loved the ground beef burrito and red sauce, thought it was very fresh tasting and the red sauce was scrumptous. Where things really turned was the pork burritos. I will say that it's obvious that the chilis inside and pork were fresh and well cooked, though the burrito lacked flavor and the chilis were large and clunky (a fine dice would have been preferred). Both my daughter and I were not interested in eating that much of it. In fact, she refused to take it home for leftovers (which she never does). I insisted on taking home leftovers regardless, so we grabbed boxes ourselves since our server wasn't around much (and the place was almost empty). Another server noticed that we were helping ourselves often so they brought our check after 10+ minutes of just sitting there. Unfortunately the leftovers weren't that great (we were hoping that the flavors would meld more overnight) so we had to toss. I finally got to check out this wonderful restaurant here in Meridian. It just happened to be close by where I was shopping so I decided to pop in. The only downside to this location is the parking is very limited, even though it is a strip mall area. The front door is not obvious. It's situated right next to the front door of another restaurant so it doesn't look obvious. It's the door to the right when you find it. Upon entering, I see that there are about 20 to 25 tables at least and they're packed. There is bar seating with about 8 to 10 stools and there's overflow seating in another room, also to be used for other events with large groups. The staff was rushing around very organized and no wasted steps. They were friendly and told me to have a seat. I initially was just going to order some food to go, but I wanted to experience The restaurant itself so I decided to stay at the bar. I went to the restroom to wash my hands and it was immaculate. The restaurant as a whole was very clean. It's quaintly decorated in Mexican theme with a large screen TV playing some sporting activity behind the bar. I was served immediately with a diet drink and I ordered a Carnitas burrito dry. Even though the crowds were large, I received my food in about eight minutes or so. I think it would've gotten there sooner, even though I was a single diner and they could've served it up quickly, but I think others might've gotten upset if I walked in the door and stepped up to the counter and get my food within three minutes. Burritos are relatively easy to make so I think they probably hesitated just to pace the crowd and keep expectations managed. They immediately served me chips and salsa, as is the custom at most Mexican restaurants, and the tortillas came in full round 8 inch shells. I had to break them up into smaller chip size to dip them into the salsa and refried beans provided. They were both good. Not too salty, just enough flavor. The burrito arrived solo on the plate with some guacamole on the side. There was ample meat and no wasted fillers like rice or anything. It was very tasty. It's not the best Carnitas I've had but they were really good. I can tell that the meat was roasted and fried, as carnitas should be. These could've had a little more flavor to them, but they were still very enjoyable. The staff checked in periodically and we're very friendly. Everyone there seem to be enjoying their food. Lots of big families and workers on their lunch break. My meal was about $14 or so which is reasonably priced for an authentic Mexican meal, drinks included. I would definitely recommend this and I'll be taking my family there to enjoy their food in the future. read more

We were in Meridian and decided to find a restaurant we had not ever eaten at. We Yelped and selected La Cabañita. What a great choice. They have an extensive menu and the prices were reasonable in today's inflated market. I ordered the chili verde burrito. The waiter asked large or small? I thought a second and decided on small. Boy, was I glad I did, I ended taking half home. The chili verde sauce was amazing! It was wonderfully spicy but not too spicy. My wife had a combination plate of enchiladas and a taco. The food here was excellent, as was the service. We will be back and can't wait to try other menu items. read more

For Cinco de Mayo, and at the recommendation of Dwight Nielsen, I checked La Cabañita Mex 4 in Meridian. La Cabañita opened in 2009 in Ketchum. There are also locations in Bellevue and Hailey. In December 2020, Senator Jim Risch recognized la Cabañita in the Congressional Record of the U.S. Senate for it's contribution to the community, by naming it Idaho Small Business of the Month. In 2022, La Cabañita in the Wood River Valley won 3 awards: Best "Cheap Eats," Best Salsa, and Best Mexican Restaurant. I arrived close to 1 PM, and the place was packed. I was lucky to find a table. My server quickly brought me a menu, water, and complementary fried corn tortillas, salsa, and refried beans. The fried corn tortillas, salsa, and refried beans were excellent! The salsa was so good that I was tempted to ask if I could purchase some. I was a bit overwhelmed by how many menu options there were, so for the first time in decades, I ordered a combination plate. I ordered #20, which is an Enchilada and a Chile Relleno, served with a side of rice and beans ($11.99). I don't normally order enchiladas, and was trying to decide between ground beef and shredded beef. My server recommended the shredded beef. I also ordered a Fish Taco on the side ($2.75). I loved the Chile Relleno! It was very cheesy and a bit spicy. I didn't care for the shredded beef enchilada because the beef wasn't seasoned, but according to reviews, this is one of the most popular menu items. I didn't love the fish taco, which was a bit bland for my taste. I later realized it was supposed to have been served with some green salsa, which my server forgot. Also, I'm partial to Baja style fish tacos. Even though there were a couple of items I didn't care for, there was a lot I did like about this restaurant. Also, the service was excellent! I look forward to returning and trying some other menu items. La Cabañita is one of the few restaurants in the Treasure Valley that serves crisp shelled tacos. My favorite crisp shelled tacos of all time were at Art's Casa in Nampa. Art served Sonoran style Mexican food. I've never found any quite like his, but El Rinconcito in Nampa was a close second. Terrible this last time, gave me a "chimichanga" that was soggy and never even fried. Didn't have burn marks so I'm pretty sure it was just a big fail. The whole point of chimichanga is to fry the tortilla so this was terrible. They also left my chille relleno out so that was disappointing, my husband had to drive all the way back but the first two times they were great. Will try again tonight and update the review :-) UPDATE: now moved to one star, I'll never get this place again. Idk what happened if they got new cooks or what but their food is absolutely terrible. They're the same as their terrible "chimichangas" barely even warmer tortillas wrapped over cheese and meat" please see the pics I had to fry them myself and they were horrifying still. My super burrito was basically a rice burrito. One half had some meet and the other half was just rice. My chili toriados which are my fave with all the yummy seasonings did not even have salt.
