Cute little spot with a great local vibe! Street parking was easy to find. The restaurant is divided into two rooms--one with the bar and high-top seating, and a separate dining area decorated with charming Mexican artwork. The owner was walking around greeting tables while we were dining, which was really nice to see and added a personal touch that you don't often get at locally owned restaurants. The menu offers plenty of options, and while the food was okay, it was a bit bland for my taste. My boyfriend, however, really enjoyed the carne asada. The drinks were definitely the highlight of our visit and are reason enough to come back. Overall, the food was solid. I ordered the churrasco típico and the steak was well-seasoned and flavorful--I was definitely happy with that. That said, a few things missed the mark. I understand avocados are pricey, but $12 for guacamole felt excessive. My $15 margarita was also a letdown--it wasn't shaken, and if you're someone who enjoys a good cocktail, you can absolutely taste the difference. For that price, I expected better. Our server was kind and approachable, but the overall energy and the ambiance of the whole place came off a little dull. It just didn't have the lively vibe I was hoping for. Cochinita Pibil served with plantains & cheese was excellent, which I ordered based on servers recommendation. Beautiful fajitas, great steak, and street tacos were delicious. I always appreciate when you can customize guacamole, as we prefer ours with no onions. There is a lot of local Mexican food competing with this restaurant, but we found their offerings to be unique and made with love. Bottom line, We will return. Room for improvement: * There is an intrusive flashing light that was visible from most angles inside the restaurant. We sat far away and it was reflecting dramatically off the window across the street. Beware, for the sensory overload sensitive. * In contrast to other reviews, we did not love the Margaritas. We were in Chicago for a wedding, and the rehearsal dinner was at La Catrina. Being from California -- where Mexican food is a staple -- and Hispanic myself, I'll admit my expectations weren't too high for a Mexican restaurant in Chicago. But I was pleasantly surprised! The dinner was a buffet with beef and chicken fajitas, all the fixings, plus rice and beans. The food had good flavor (just needed a touch more salt), and the rice and beans were solid. For me, refried beans are the ultimate test of a good Mexican spot -- if you can make killer beans, the rest usually follows. Now, the margaritas stole the show -- huge, refreshing, and absolutely delicious. Highly recommend grabbing a drink here! Their salsa also had a nice punch of cilantro, just how I like it. First time visiting this hidden gem. Walked in at 7PM on a Friday night, and though it was crowded, we got seated within minutes. The service was great. The waiters are very attentive. The food was good, but the Margaritas were even better. I would definitely visit La Catrina again. read more

Honestly the food is the only reason why I would return but even then I won't, the food overall was decent, but now the service was terrible. Our male server was careless and didn't once come check on us or ask us if we needed anything, attitude as if he was annoyed and wasn't pleasant at all. Even after finishing our food and asking for the check he didn't direct a word to us. To top it off he went to every other table and checked/parlayed with all the other tables but never checked on us. Do better read more

This is such a great place! The aesthetics are cozy and vibrant. The margaritas are not from a mx- absolutely have to try the watermelon jalapeño!! This was my second time here, I went there first week they opened and there were several issues. So, I decided to give then another chance. The servers are very friendly, however I asked for Chile relleno and I was told they were out of them. Then I asked for Bistec la Mexican, but asked for it made with ranchers sauce and was told they wouldn't do that because they never made it that way and don't like making new things because they don't know how they would taste. Needless to say. I was totally disappointed. I ended up ordering the steak enchilada dinner and the enchiladas were literally about 2 1/2 inches long. I will not be going back. read more

Bernice and her team do a fantastic job helping you through the menu if you are unsure about some dishes or want a recommendation. The margaritas are all delicious--they are big. :') Every time we go there, we make new friends and enjoy the evening. The staff is extremely friendly. For a place that just opened, the environment just doesn't seem the cleanliest. We could see in the kitchen where staff were on the phones and then handling food. The menus were already falling apart, were old and dirty. It's almost like they threw this restaurant together for the sake of just opening. The food was just okay and way overpriced for the quality and quantity. The final reason for the one star is the fact that my check had one price and then after they already swiped my card to pay, I noticed that the bill went up on the receipt I had to sign. No one consulted me about a price change prior to swiping my card. That to me is BAD, sneaky business. Needless to say, and sadly to say, I will not return to this establishment. read more
