Came for dinner on cinco de mayo and as expected, it was packed. We waited about 10 minutes before we were seated in the corner. It is a very small place with lots of tables so expect to get cozy with your neighbors. We got the horchata and orange Mexican soda. The horchata was good,I never really had it before to compare, but it tasted a little watered down but was still good. The Mexican soda was alright. We were served a small plate of chips with refried beans and cheese. It wasn't bad especially for complementary. We ordered two pastor tacos which was pork with grilled pineapples and the pork was a bit on the dry side. It was alright after I added some of the red and green sauce they offered on the table. I ordered the steak molcajete and the BF got the carne asada. It comes with soup or salad and both were only mediocre. The steak molcajete comes in a hot lava bowl steaming along with some corn tortillas. It came with melted cheese and was enjoyable.. However I didn't really enjoy they pieces of steak which were mostly fatty pieces I was chewing into. The carne asada came really well done and dry. I also was not really happy with the rice or guacamole that came with the molcajete. The rice was on the dry side and the guacamole was pretty plain. I've been here an embarrassing number of times. it looks like it could be a shitty little grocery store from the outside, which is how you KNOW it's good. owners are super friendly, decor is cozy and clean, and the food is flavorful and authentic. my favorites, in no particular order: - nachos. I love that they come with chorizo - molcajetes, they come out boiling hot in a stone bowl. think meat in this thick spicy, cheesy sauce served with tortillas - mole. get anything with their mole sauce, it's dynamite. my personal favorite: the chicken mole burrito. reasonably priced and SO good, I could eat that shit twice a week. - ice cream with strawberries, bananas, and tequila caramel sauce. I have no words for how delicious this is AND they're a BYOB to boot. if you're in the cherry hill or Philly area and like Mexican, you owe it to yourself to try this place. Not really sure why this little whole in the wall has 4 stars...I absolutely love hole in the wall gems but this restaurant is no diamond in the rough. Just so happened to be in NJ to catch a movie and was craving Mexican food...found this place with decent reviews...to start I got the guacamole...I should have taken a picture to illustrate how sad of a guac it was...had no texture like a baby puree, barley contained any ingredients other than avocado and shockingly came with maybe 10-12 chips on top for $7...trust me it's a complete waste of money! For my main dish I got the Pollo en mole poblano...the chicken was super thin, overcooked, and chewy with really no flavor. The one and only highlight of the meal was the mole which actually had a great deal of rich Mexican flavors bringing the HEAT. Don't even bother with the rice and bean which accompany the dish...I have had better beans from a Goya can and rice from a steamer bag. My date got the Pastor tacos which literally came with one tiny piece of pineapple and no cilantro...not sure what kind of Mexican doesn't put cilantro on a taco... Overall this place is overpriced, overrated, and underperforming. I will not be back. If one wants great cheap Mexican food please make a trip to south Philly...there are copious Mexican restaurants which far exceed this establishment's food and price... Went here based on other reviews and really liked this place! It's different in many ways which you may or may not like: 1) food is pleasantly true to its natural taste. Salt lovers and seasoning lovers will need to use their side sauces. I think most places are too heavy handed with that stuff, so this was a nice change of pace. 2) they don't give you a basket of chips, but they did give us a complimentary chip and bean (small) plate and I loved it. Simple but tasty. 3) their queso is real Mexican queso, not velveeta. 4) burrito was large and cheap (score!), 5) soda comes in a bottle but costs about the same as a fountain drink elsewhere so I had no issue with this Desserts were really good! read more

La Guadalupana in Westmont as been my favorite authentic Mexican in the area. It's still very good. But La Cita is better. We've gone several times now and have tried several different dishes. Nothing was less than really good. Try the molcajete dish. They heat up the molcajete and serve with it. Excellent quesadillas made from scratch. Huitlcoche is wonderful. Actually several of the antojitos are made from scratch with masa. I really like their Huarache. If you're lucky enough to be there when they have tamales, get one. Good authentic food. If you're used to that Tex-Mess crap they serve in Texass, you're in for a surprise. They take credit cards and the server Alma is always patient and pleasant. read more

Since my g/f and I cannot this Sunday, we decided to celebrate Valentines day yesterday, February 12th. Knowing she's a big fan of Mexican Cuisine I found LA Cita on yelp, and read the reviews. They were mostly positive, so I felt it would be a good choice for us. Overall, I was mostly incorrect in that assumption. Blink, and you'll miss this restaurant when trying to find this place on Route 70. It's apart of another building that has various other shops connected with it. The parking lot is also fairly small and cramped, so be aware. Once entering we noticed the size immediately. This place is about as large as a larger living room, and I truly mean that. There were only about 6/7 total tables. We were sat immediately, which was nice, but we also had a reservation. Anyway, we were sat in between two tables whose patrons were facing the opposite direction of our table. I'm not sure how to really exemplify what I mean but this, but just know that it was a bit awkward. Especially since we were literally inches from the backs of people Our table got bumped multiple times by other patrons getting up and sitting down. It was pretty annoying. Especially for me, because I was trying to give my g/f a nice evening. Onto the food: Well first, I must tell you about a pet peeve of mine. You see my go-to drink when at a restaurant is an unsweetened iced tea. It's my favorite beverage, and I order it 9 out of 10 times. My pet peeve being that 7 out of 10 times when I order it it comes out tasting the way an old rag smells. This is obviously disgusting. The tea gets this taste by being old/ sitting out for a while. This just lets me know that the tea basically was made hours ago, and never changed because who really cares, right? Well, I do. I don't want tea that tastes the way an old rag smells. So, this of course happened at La Cita, and I immediately brought it to the waitresses attention. She was very apologetic and made a new batch of tea, which I appreciated. We were given a special menu for the weekend, along with their regular menu. Something my g/f and I noticed was that they had the same item(s) on both menus, but on the special menu they were more money. Why? Weird. We decided to order the empanadas to start off with. They came out fairly quickly, however came with no dipping sauces? They did come out with fresh guacamole which was pretty tasty, though. At the same time our waitress brought out a few (and I mean this) chips with some beans and cheese on top, as well as 2 very small ramekins with dipping sauces in them. They were okay. For my meal I ordered the diablo burrito, which I ate all of. It was good, and hot, which is what I expected and wanted. However, I was a little disappointed that it didn't come with any sides, at all. It only came with a small side of guacamole. No Sour cream or rice or beans. That's it. For $14.00 I guess I expected at least something? I'm not certain of the name of the dish my g/f ordered, but it came out in some type of bowl and was sizzling the entire time at our table. Her dish was also pretty good, though she was unable to finish because she gets full fast. I would have giving them more stars if we had more room at our table, and were able to have a conversation without worrying someone was listening or could overhear us. Also, the lackluster appetizer(s) and my lack of sides just made me not want to go back anytime soon. Do yourself a favor, and check our La Esperanza in Lawnside. They're a great Mexican place. Also, they're more Mexican-American, but The Tortilla press in Pennsauken is also very good, and also has a full service bar. read more

Tempted to even give 2 stars...I'm being nice and giving 3 since the service was good and friendly, but considering my friend and I were the only ones in the restaurant (7:30 on a Thursday night), there really wasn't any reason not to be. Small place. Dim lighting. Cheesy Mexican music. The free chips with beans and 2 dips at the start were good. I would've eaten more had I known what my entree was gonna be like...I got enchiladas mole poblanos - one beef, one chicken and one spinach. The meat was tough and barely seasoned. I liked the spinach one the best but still all of them were swimming in sauce, which wasn't bad, mind you, it just wasn't great. I felt like it was lacking a lot. And the rice and beans on the side really weren't worth mentioning either. Simply nothing special. Similar experience for my friend who ordered the taco platter - 3 chicken, one chorizo and one fish. She didn't get onions or anything to top her chicken tacos, so the bland off white chunky pieces of chicken were sitting there exposed...looking all unappealing. I felt bad for taking my friend here!! There were such great reviews. Yet we left quite disappointed. Maybe it was an off night? Maybe because it was so slow the food had been sitting out or idk...either way, I won't be back. My Mexican food standards are too high. Sorry LaCita! Having lived in Dallas for a while, I'm constantly on the search for good Mexican food in the Philly area to satisfy that frequent craving. This place was recommended by a co-worker, so we checked it out at lunchtime on a Saturday. Upon entering, you are struck by the clean and bright decor. Quite different than some of the Mexican places in S Philly. It is a relatively small place, with about 10 tables total, and we were the only ones in there during our lunch. They start with a small plate of chips with a refried bean "sauce" on top instead of the normal basket of chips. While I was taken aback by this at first, both by the size and the sauce, it was actually very good. The chips themselves were homemade and tasty. Beware that the red salsa provided had a huge kick. Entrees were also very good. I had the al pastor tacos, which had a generous amount of meat and a great flavor. The tortillas for the tacos were excellent! Again, homemade. My only complaint, although minor, is that the service was a bit slow, considering we were the only ones there. Maybe they just hadn't gotten things in gear yet that day. We decided to stop here based upon the favorable reviews. It was about 3pm in the afternoon, and we were the only people in the joint. We had the queso fundido as an appetizer, along with the complementary chips and beans.There were also a couple of salsas brought out to the table - orange and green. I had a couple bites of the fundido before the boytoy demolished it. Quite tasty, indeed. The cheese was really fresh and not as greasy as others I've had. The beans on the chips was a first for me and I was skeptical until I took a bite. Holy shit. Best refried beans of my life! The orange salsa/hot sauce (I did not try, super spicy) was a hit with the BF. He liked it so well he purchased some to take home - you can do a small or large container. Our waitress, who was superb, said everything was handmade at the restaurant, including this 'special sauce' (my words, not theirs). We both got enchiladas suizas verdes served with beans and rice for our entree. The BF got chicken, and I got cheese. Unbelievable. The cheese was sooooo good and fresh. The verde sauce was impressive as well. We were both completely overwhelmed by the deliciousness and overate to the point of being uncomfortable. The place is BYO, small, and clean. I'm finding it harder and harder to believe I've lived a half mile away from La Cita for the past 5 years and never once stepped foot in their door until last Saturday. From the outside looking in, this place is the epitome of a hole in the wall restaurant (which is what I prefer compared to chain restaurants). Although the inside is very small, the seating arrangement makes it not feel as if everyone is sharing the same food and conversation. The decor doesn't hit a homerun, but when you factor in how great the food was compared to the small price you pay, I'm willing to overlook it. The food - big portions for a fraction of what it could/should cost. I'm a big eater and rarely take anything home. I could barely finish half of my chicken and pulled pork burrito. My girlfriend, Kate, also did the same with her veggie burrito. The chips and salsa were flavorful. This place is the definition of authentic Mexican. The staff - very friendly and super nice. I actually left my wallet at my house (because I'm an idiot) so I left Kate at La Cita by herself so I could run back home and get it. By the time I made it back the staff brought out a birthday desert (again because I'm an idiot) because they felt bad Kate had to wait for me to come back and pay for dinner. They sung the birthday song, "Happy birthday dear ......... you-uuuu" because they didn't know Kate's name. This is pretty much the reason why I gave it the 5th star. Walked by La Cita today and it smelled great and figured I have to try it sometime. Well, I got the hankering for a burrito tonight and gave it a go. I went with the carnita's burrito plus 2 taco's to try their chicken and steak... All their meats were cooked to perfection and juicy as it gets... Too many times I've had a burritos or taco's with DRY meat... Anyway, the taco's were basic and delicious. The burrito was built the way it should be, it was mostly all meat with a little rice for tasting... Too many places make that ratio the opposite way and I can't stand that. I lived in So. Cal for 5 years and I'd put this place up against any of the best mexican food I had out there. I will definitely be back to try their other dishes... Just came back from eating at La Cita. Been here once before and the taco was ok so decided to come back and try new things. Unfortunately today the food was terrible! My bf and I ordered guacamole for appetizers, chilaquiles, chicken burrito and chicken tacos. The burrito comes with a small side of pico de gallo and guacamole, but the pico de gallo was SPOILED!!!! My bf and I couldn't help but start gagging because it tasted and smelled so bad. Absolutely disgusting. The guac also looked overly whipped and pureed because its not fresh and made to order. Disappointed that it had no flavor. Chicken was very dry in both the burrito and taco. Chilaquiles was also a miss for it was literally drowning in tasteless green sauce. When I told the waitress of the spoiled food, she just said sorry and a few minutes later gave us the bill. I asked if there was not going to be any explanation or compensation for the spoiled food and she took the bill and went back to the kitchen to ask. I adore this place. It's a tiny place with lots of heart and FANTASTIC authentic mexican food. You can tell that this food is made with love. Try the verde sauce - for folks who like their stuff a little on the spicier side it fits the bill. Their molcajetes are super fun (food served super hot, temperature-wise, in a lava bowl in a savory red sauce). Entrees come with soup or salad AND rice and beans. Their tequila ice cream was heaven - I thought it would be a scoop of ice cream... no way!!!! Plantains, caramel sauce, and sopapillas. The prices are great and it's a BYO! I wish I could say that this placed lived up to all of the good reviews and hopes and dreams that I had for it! Located in Cherry Hill, the prices are geared towards this market. I felt that the prices were a tad steep for what you received, especially compared to other Mexican places in the area. As others have said, you only get a tiny plate of chips with beans at the beginning. They were great but left me wanting more. The salsas were amazing, rojo and verde. They definitely had a kick and made me need my water which I loved. I ordered the taco sampler and got tacos al pastor, chorizo and carne asada. I really wanted the tacos al pastor to blow me away but they fell short, not even having pineapple, which is a staple. The corn tortillas were big and handmade but I didn't fall in love. The tacos came on a wooden board which was cute and tried to make it a bit more upscale (which I'm sure factored into the price!). My husband got the molcajete azteca which came with a soup (crema de poblano) which was good. However, the entree was drowning in the sauce. Personally, I liked the tomatillo flavor but my husband felt the sauce was just too much. The meat came hanging over the sides of the molcajete and was very bland. The cecina wasn't as salty as it should have been and the steak lacked spices. Also, it came with chorizo but in the form of Italian sausage instead of crumbled, which is a big no-no. We really liked this restaurant! My husband is from Mexico, and we're really happy that this place has opened because we love authentic Mexican food. My family and I went here for weekend lunch. We had the flautas, enchiladas, quesadillas, and tacos al pastor. Everything was great! The flautas and the carne pastor were a little on the greasy side, but still totally delicious. We've also had their tamales many times in the past (when they were selling them from El Mercadito), and they're fantastic. Also, definitely try their horchata. It's the best I've had in the US. I ordered a pork burrito with rice and beans and told them no oil or butter and keep as dry as possible. I was back home in five minutes, opened the sandwich and saturated in oil and grease. I've never seen pulled pork like this before. A few tiny pieces cut up , took one bite and the sandwich went down the garbage disposal. I went here today since the reviews were generally very good. This was the worse burrito that I've ever tasted in 60+ years of living. I starting to think that most of the reviewers were family. We were running errands in Jersey and had a hankering for Mexican. Lo and behold, Yelp brought us to La Cita, which I had passed countless times on Route 70 without noticing. As others have mentioned, this is more of a hole in the wall and definitely a family run institution, which can result in slow service. That being said, the food is worth it. I've driven by this place so many times, I had to give it a try eventually. Although they don't officially service brunch items, we decided to try it for an early lunch on a Saturday. Ambiance: La Cita is a pretty small place. Maybe 15 tables or so. Regardless, it wasn't too busy when we went so we were seated immediately. It's a very bright room with a very minimal no frills decor. The Mexican music started to get on our nerves a bit, but that's ok. Service: The service was quick as we were sitting next to the kitchen. It seemed like one server was running the entire floor. It wasn't a problem though. Food: As the previous reviews mentioned, the chorizo tacos were great. I also went with the Pastor tacos which were a little dry, but also pretty tasty. The wife went with the chicken and beef tacos. She was neither disappointed nor overly impressed. Sadly, the guacamole was unimpressive... but the tortilla chips were nice and fresh. $- The prices were basically on point for Cherry Hill. Overall this place didn't blow me away, but it's nice to have authentic Mexican food on the otherwise fairly boring stretch of Route 70. I'm sure I'll be back. read more

Went here last night for a family dinner after seeing what these other Yelpers had to say. Before that, I was skeptical of this tiny hole-in-the-wall on Rt. 70, but wow was everyone spot on! This was some of the best Mexican food I've ever had. The place is no-frills, but has a friendly and helpful staff. Our waitress was super sweet and answered all of our questions with a smile. We had the sampler appetizer which was served with two fresh-made spicy salsas. The nachos, flautas, tamales, and sopes were perfectly fried and tasty, not soggy with oil like at your typical Mexican chain restaurant. And the pico and guac were very fresh. For my entree I had the enchiladas with chicken and cheese in mole poblano sauce. The chicken was tender and was mixed with just the right amount of cheese, and the mole was very rich with a little bit of a kick - just the way I like it. The star of the table was the pollo molcajete had by both my brother and boyfriend - chicken strips in a savory and spicy tomato sauce served sizzling and covered in gooey cheese in a large stone bowl (the molcajete). It was SO tangy and flavorful! Definitely a must-have. I will without a doubt keep frequenting La Cita, next time with a pack of Mexican beer to offset some of that delicious spiciness! read more

I'm perplexed as to why this place has such good reviews. I got the enchiladas and my husband got a burrito. We both agreed that the food was pretty bland. The verde sauce on mine was very spicy but that's the only thing that had any flavor. The chicken and spinach inside was very bland plus the chicken was not tender. The signage for this place is, "La Cita - Authentic Mexican Food," so it must be authentic right? If you're like me, you're immediately quite suspicious. But when my Mexican friend suggested going there, I was slightly more at ease. The portions are huge so be careful. I ordered 2 quesadillas and it was way too much. I got the Flor de calabaza, which was really a veggie mix, and the Huitlacoche, which they said was corn truffle. I've never had corn truffle before and it looked like infected corn, and most likely is. It looked kinda scary too, but I tried it nonetheless and it wasn't bad. Tasted good with the spices and everything else in the quesadillas. Overall, pretty good food. It's in an odd location so it's never been busy when I go (usually lunch hours). Every. Single. Time. I. Order. There. Is. A. Problem. It's either inaccurate wait times, they tell me 20 minutes and then when I show up I still end up waiting another 20 minutes, or they just forget to put my order in altogether which is what happened tonight and another night as well. The first time this happened I let it go as it was a Saturday night and when I showed up it was very busy. However tonight it was completely dead in there and they still somehow forgot to even put my order in?! And they don't even realize until after I pay for it?! So now here I am with plenty of time on my hands just waiting for the food that I already paid for but the kitchen never prepared. The place was very cold, so wasn't quite comfortable to begin with. The chorizo tacos were on point but my gf's beef tacos were very bland. No seasoning at all. Heard of this restaurant through an ni.com article. I'm familiar with the area so decided to try it. If you love authentic Mexican food, this is your place in the Cherry Hill area. Amazing food, excellent service at a reasonable price. I definitely recommend this place. Enjoy!! read more
