This is a family-owned New Mexican restaurant in Simi Valley, and if you're looking for a truly homemade, from-the-heart experience, this is the place. The carne con chile in red sauce tasted genuinely homemade, rich, comforting, and full of flavor. You can tell it's cooked with care, not rushed. The beans and rice were more on the average side, but they're sides for a reason and complemented the main dish well without taking away from it. The Taco 12-12 really hit the spot, and I loved that they include nopales, such a great touch that you don't see everywhere and adds authenticity. I'm giving them 5 stars for the effort, heart, and homemade meals. This is one of those places everyone should try at least once and decide for themselves. Update is in order. After having some hiccups, my past few visits have been very pleasant. Thanks to the owner for messaging me and informing me of plumbing and other issues. Transparency and communication does go a long way. Past two visits I have had their asada fries and torta. Both were exactly what I was looking for. Filling and worth the visit. In Simi it's hard to find good taco spots or Mexican food in general. Luckily I stumbled upon this hidden Gem. Since it was my first time coming here I had to try multiple things. First off the asada torta was delicious and the asada has good seasoning and flavor unlike most places out here. Second the quesa birria tacos with consome were also delicious and very flavorful. And last was the crispy potato tacos, now while also very good the only thing I could suggest is giving a little bit more potato filling in them so you don't feel like you're eating just fried tortilla with small amount of potato. Also would recommend making in house homemade chips for your salsas. And those are just small nit picks I am having. Overall it was delicious and I will be going back very soon! I figured after my third visit it was time to include my experience! La Cocina 12-12 is a welcome Mexican cuisine addition to a neighborhood that has few "close" options for the residents in the area. Parking is always easy and available here so you can be sure to plan your visit any time during their normal hours of operation. The service has been great each time, with the gentleman running the front of house promptly entering your order and checking in with you once you've had a few bites. I've included a picture of my Carne Asada Fries order with extra pico, which normally I would prefer shredded cheese with, however, the cheese sauce works well here as the ingredients are all fresh and the meat properly trimmed and flavorful. As a firm believer that the food is merely a vessel for the sauce, they offer great salsa choices from mild to perfectly balanced spicy in a bottle for you to put as much as you'd like. Huge win! The single tv in the restaurant usually plays soccer or sports news and it's just a chill, sit down and eat little spot. I love nachos in general! I was craving them today after not having breakfast so I treated myself for lunch. Pictured: Nachos with added chicken. The guacamole was perfectly zesty and fresh. It felt like my mom made me this plate with love. The staff was lovely and asked me if I wanted more salsa (they give you chips and salsa while you wait) but didn't need more. I finished everything. The ambiance was clean and cozy, next time I'll come in to actually read my book instead of scroll on my phone. Sunday lunchtime, we took the family for tacos. Nice open clean place behind 7-Eleven in Sycamore at Royal. Colorful logo and a Tip Taco piñata! Fresh chips were light crispy and warm. Got two chicken tacos / classic street style onion and cilantro ($3 each) with green or red taco sauces to squeeze on top. Asada burrito combo was great, but the queso birria tacos $4 were really delicious. Had fries and a quesadilla for little kids, made us a burrito with potatoes off menu too. Solid meal for about $12 per person. Cashier was patient and friendly, the cook (owner perhaps) came out to ask about food and what else we needed twice. New restaurant, so still a bit stiff; need to build a better routine for drinks and chips after payment, especially as other customers come in. Went to La Cocina 12-12 specifically to have Pozole. Must be really popular as I was the last to get it ( they ran out). They Pozole was a good size portion. Lots of hominy and chunks of pork. I always get a small side of rice to add to the soup at the end. The place is a hole in the wall in a half empty small shopping center. They have two TV playing sports and music. We tried something new tonight at Cocina 12-12 (Their Grandmother's birthday, in case you wondered.) Had a delicious dinner including enchiladas, the 12-12 taco which includes meat, beans and nopales, and the street tacos.The flavors are different than your run-of-the mill Mexican place. The chips are fresh and light and the salsa and pico de gallo flavorful but not too hot. The staff was very helpful and cheerful and we truly enjoyed the Cocina 12-12 experience.
