Absolutely a must when you come to the Valle! You must arrive latest 8:45am if you want to avoid hour(s) wait. This is a literal "mom" restaurant where you will find the owner wandering around asking if anyone may need anything. The food left me wanting more and more. We tried several dishes: elote pancakes, machaca plate, chicharron omelette, chilaquiles, and EVERYTHING was so fresh and tasty. The meats were moist, the pancakes were savory, and the ambiance was like being in your grandmas house. Make sure you check this spot out before you leave, you won't be disappointed!
First off. Get here early. There's a lot of tables to accommodate the large crowds this place draws. Coming here I see a two year Michelin guide for 2025 and 2026. Which as you know grants a consistency and quality in their product. The borrego is on point if you like somewhat gamey meats. One thing I'm not a fan of is all these chicks everywhere in Guadalupe wearing the stupid round hats and skirts and boots. It's like they're all in the same band or circle hat cult. Stop it. Enighs enough
This place was recommended to me by multiple people and I have heard that the wait can be hours long so we got there right at 8am and were the 2nd customers of the day! We got the machaca, corn pancakes con requeso, chilequilles, empanadas. The cafe de olla was delicious and didn't need anything additional. Of all the things we ordered, my favorite were the corn pancakes. I can only eat so much of the pancakes and def needs to be shared because I can see myself get tired of it. I was quite disappointed in the chilaquiles because I like my tortillas a bit more crispy. Funnily enough, my favorite food item were the tortilla chips with the fresh Mexican queso. It was so good! The location is pretty big and there's livestock in the back and even a playground for kids! I wouldn't wait an hour for this place but if you can go early and grab a spot, be sure to check this place out.
For starters, this place is Michelin recognized, and was rated best breakfast in the world in 2015 by FoodieHub. I told myself if I'm ever in the area again, I have to make an effort to eat at this place. Well, the opportunity arose as I was staying at a nearby winery. The biggest problem I encountered was finding a ride to get to this restaurant. Taxis are nonexistent in the area. Ubers are only in the area when someone from Ensenada requests a round trip to the area, so no they are not available to others. Therefore, I expressed my frustration with the front desk at my winery hotel and they took on the task of finding me private transportation. About 40 minutes later, they called my room to inform me that they located a driver. Unfortunately, he requested an inflated price for the to and from the restaurant. Private drivers down here know that you have few choices, therefore, they can ask inflated prices. Yes, I was in a pickle, but I really wanted to go. I did not rent a car because many of the roads hug cliffs and everyone drives fast, because they know where all of the mountain curves are. Being from Chicago, where we also drive fast but don't have mountain cliff roads decided to play it safe and let others do the driving for me. Anyhow, I debated, and in the end agreed to the expensive terms because when I going to get the opportunity again to eat at a place rated best breakfast in the world? How was the breakfast? It was absolutely delicious, everything was made from scratch. I ordered the cafe de la olla which interprets into coffee from the pot because typically it is prepared with raw sugar (piloncillo), canella (cinnamon sticks), and orange zest. How was the coffee? Delicious. I had some machaca (small bits of dried beef) with eggs which came with delicious refried beans. I also ordered the excellent chilaquiles with an egg and a side of bacon. I also needed to order the one thing most talk about on their menu which is the corn bread pancakes. They used the recipe for a typical corn bread sold down here called pan de elote to make the pancakes, and yes, they were excellent. Turning the batter from this recipe into pancakes was a brilliant idea. Also, I cannot leave out the great tasting freshly made corn tortillas that came with the food. The tortillas down here taste different from the ones back in Chicago because down here a white heirloom corn is utilized rather than the sweet yellow dent corn from the Midwest. Was it the best breakfast that I have ever had in Mexico, or anywhere else for that matter? Well, it definitely lived up to the hype the breakfast was amazing and I do highly recommend it. If you do decide to visit, my best advice is show up early because a line forms very early. I have been lucky to have also had other amazing breakfasts in Mexico and other places in my travels. The secret to this restaurant sits right behind it. On the restaurant grounds is an active ranch, which also doubles as a small zoo, where they source their milk and meats from. Yes, they raise their own animals which later become items on the menu. Does that fresh matter? Yes, it absolutely does make all of the difference. Does it sound cruel? Well, that is a whole other conversation. Let's just say the animals are treated humanely. All of the livestock looked happy as they roamed around the grounds. Unlike the way livestock is treated inhumanly in the United States in dirty overcrowded housing where some never get to see the sun or roam freely in the open air. Livestock in the US are constantly given antibiotics and growth hormones, also fed gmo feed with questionable health implications for those that consume them.
U cannot pass this place up .. if you happen to be in the area it's worth the drive an the place is big for large groups of people ..the service is excellent and the flavor in the food is just amazing portions are big so go with an appetite. We will see you soon thank you for the great experience
Had to make a stop at the famous Dona Esthela's. We got there early so we didn't have to wait, we got seated right away. Food was yummy but the server was a bit slow in getting to us. We waited for about 10 mins for our check once we were done. Other than that, all was good.
What a treat to come here with friends from the socal area on a fun day trip to Ensenada. My friend made the itinerary and this was the first stop on our trip and it was the perfect start to our trip! Our wait time was about 20 min or so since we came in a Thursday morning. She had seen this place on a YouTube video and knew they were good and known for their corn pancakes. I Ordered the Machaca con huevo and We all ordered different dishes to share which I loved lol. We were given chips and salsa with a side of cheese and someone ordered guacamole for the table. I also ordered a veggie juice( you know balance lol). All the food was delicious! I was so stuffed by the time I left! Although I don't know much Spanish the staff was very patient and worked with us! After eating but before leaving we were able to check out the animals out in the barn area. Definitely would recommend this place For those visiting the area and to get there early if you can!
Absolutely delicious breakfast here. Will be returning. This spot has its own parking lot but gets crowded quick! Try to get here before 8:30 am to get a spot. If you have a bigger party, go even earlier. The tortillas and cheese were so fresh and we were in awe with the food.
Seems to be a really popular spot with both tourists and locals. It's off a long dirt road in the middle of no where. Really big restaurant attached to what seems to be a working farm? Get's super crowded so show up early. Overall it's a solid mexican breakfast restaurant to be honest i've had better in San Diego and LA. Nothing particularly stands out besides the cheaper than US prices.
If you can find it... it's worth the drive to this remote ranch and restaurant. Look it up on Google maps and follow directions to not get lost. Just when you think you're in the middle nowhere, you have arrived. Go through the big gates into the compound, parking is to the right. Be prepared for there to be a line of people ahead of you, but be assured the staff will soon find you a table. People drive long distances to dine here. The food is superb, the grounds are well developed and provide natural beauty of plants, gardens, walkways, etc. The service was impeccable and professional as well as warm and friendly. Our table was automatically provided with chips, salsa and some fresh cheese from the ranch so we could enjoy it while looking over their menu. They have something for everyone, mostly Mexican cuisine, but what surprised me was the carne machaca one normally finds in Nuevo León, and dishes like carne en su jugo usually only found in Jalisco. They offer all the traditional antojitos along with more americanized dishes, epic corn pancakes, delicious chilaquiles, fresh fruit, homemade corn or flour tortillas... After dining we walked around to see the gardens, flowers, and take a look at the cows in the pen. The view was surrounded by the hills, vineyards and country homes. I really enjoyed La Cocina de Doña Esthela, and by the multitude of people who find their way there every day, it is apparent that Doña Esthela knows what she's doing and does it well. Highly recommended.
Amazing, delicious food!! Alvaro had great customer service as he answered all our foodie questions. My brother recommended to arrive early because the wait can be long. So we arrived early by 8:20 a.m. and were seated right away. The ambiance is rustic and many family oriented. My hubby ordered res tatemado with broth, beans and hand made flour tortillas. The taste was superb, seasoned well, juicy melted in your mouth!!! My hubby said we are returning with the family!!! Highly recommended if you're visiting El Valle!!! Arrive early!!
Tried this gem of a place--definitely a must-try while out in the Valle! I recommend going early when they open at 8 AM, as lines can get long. We had no issue getting seated right away, but by the time we left around 9:30-10 AM, the place was getting super packed. I ordered the Machaca con Huevo with beans--a delicious combination packed with flavor. The homemade tortillas were amazing, and I also tried their Café de Olla, which was great. We also had the Borrego en su Jugo--the meat was tender, and the caldo was absolutely delicious. For dessert, we tried their flan! I usually don't like flan because of its strong eggy taste, but this one did not disappoint. It was creamy, soft, and just perfect in my opinion. The restaurant is spacious, with both indoor and outdoor seating. Our waiter was a little shy but attentive, though he didn't speak much or offer suggestions. Parking is plentiful, but getting there was a bit of a bumpy ride due to dirt roads and potholes. I was feeling a little under the weather after a few drinks the night before, and let's just say the ride there didn't exactly help. Overall, a great spot with delicious food and lots of food options, definitely worth checking out.
We came here for my moms birthday with a group of 16 and I was not expecting it to be this good. I can only speak for my borrego tatemado, but everyone in our group was very happy with their food. They have a ton of staff that's taking care of your throughout. Filling chips, awesome tortillas, delicious salsas, and anything else you could want for a complete meal. This is very homey food and great for any type of occasion. 10/10 and recommend it to anyone that's in the area for wine tasting.
This Michelin-starred restaurant in Valle de Guadalupe is an absolute gem! I'm so glad we made a stop here for brunch -- it was truly a memorable experience. Despite being very busy, we were seated right away, which was a pleasant surprise. The space was a bit warm inside, but the incredible food and overall experience made it completely worth it. I had their famous Hotcakes de Elote (corn pancakes), and they were easily my favorite dish of the meal! They were unique, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. I also tried their Machaca con Huevo, which was another standout. Everything we ordered was prepared beautifully and full of flavor. Their homemade tortillas and salsa were the perfect finishing touches and added even more authenticity to the meal. The service was excellent -- our waiter was attentive, friendly, and went above and beyond to make sure we had a great experience. The restaurant itself is spacious and has a wonderful atmosphere. I also noticed the staff singing "Happy Birthday" to guests a couple of times, making it a great spot for a special celebration. First off, what a magnificent location. If you plan to come here, come early; otherwise, you'll end up waiting over an hour to get seated. Luckily, I got there just before the rush and was seated quickly. The location has an amazing vibe, especially as it begins to fill up. The food was amazing!! The Cafe de Olla was some of the best that I have ever had. It is perfectly seasoned with cinnamon and requires no additional sugar or milk to be thoroughly enjoyed. Next comes the chips and salsa. The chips were crunchy and salted, while the salsa was actually spicy. Far too often, salsa has no spice, and this was fantastic. While we were waiting for our orders, we were offered the chance to order a taco, and I decided to try the carnitas taco. WOW. The flavor profile was insane. The carnitas were juicy, but the exterior was lightly smoked and toasty, which paired with the lime and toppings was very pleasant. My main was the Borrego Tatemado. It was phenomenal! The meat was very juicy, and the side sauce (Consomme) was some of the best I ever had. The restaurant does an amazing job of making this place feel like I am eating homemade food at a relative's. read more

Great food and atmosphere! We got the corn pancakes, guacamole, beef taco, and chiliquiles with green sauce. Everything was delicious and the service was quick. We even got seated right away on a Saturday morning. read more

We arrived around 10am was already packed we grabbed a drink and waited with what felt like 100 or more people. Nice covered patio area to wait with. Few little shop vendors. Time went fast people watching. They are pretty efficient considering the crowds. We were happy to wait, food was delicious! I ordered the pancakes with fruit ( I know sounds basic) but was so good! My husband ordered the Machaca beef, chorizo & eggs ( their most popular combo) was very good flavorful with spices & peppers & onions . Eggs yummy and fluffy. I saw beautiful bowls of menudo passing by looked amazing something to think about next time read more

I liked the food but it was not worth the hour and half wait . The line is brutal you drive out to the valley and then wait so long for breakfast that you are over it I'm glad I came here to experience it but can't say I will be back read more

This place was recommended by my suegros who love coming here. We arrived around 10:30 on a Friday morning and was told the wait would be about 10 minutes. It was actually about 30 minutes so be prepared for a long wait time, especially on the weekends. Once they sat us down, the service was quick and efficient. They start you off with chips & salsa and queso fresco as well. My wife and I ordered their cafe de olla and their chilaquiles verdes. I ordered mine with pollo since it came with an egg. I was surprised they didn't offer one with just an egg instead of with a protein as well. Both the cafe de olla en chilaquiles were delicious. The cafe de olla had just the right amount of sweetness and tasted like the one I make from home. The chilaquiles verdes were very flavorful. The tortillas tasted fresh, were crispy and tasted amazing with the sauce. The chicken was good and it was also topped off with Queso fundido. My wife and my mom both make their chilaquiles with cheese. It can't get anymore authentic than that. My son initially ordered their regular Hotcakes sencillos and I had suggested for him to try something new and to try their specialty ones made out of corn. I'm glad he did because these were really delicious. Definitely something different and he enjoyed them as well. Overall a really good dining experience and definitely worth the wait. This place was the highlight of our trip to Valle de Guadalupe. We went on Thursday morning and the wait was about 30 minutes, but it was absolutely worth it! The food was amazing, their corn pancakes are delicious and the potato soup was full of flavor. My bf had their machaca plate and truly enjoyed it. Service was fast and friendly. Believe the hype! We arrived about 1 PM on a Saturday, and was seated immediately. The restaurant was full and lively. All the customers were having a great time. Service was prompt and cordial, but not exactly friendly. But the server answered all of our questions and helped us select amazing food. Like the other reviews say, don't miss the corn hot cakes or the Machaca with eggs so amazingly yummy! Will absolutely come back here on my next visit to Valle. read more

The service was super fast even though there was a lot of people, we waited 40 minutes to get a table. The maiz pancakes were amazing 10/10 highly recommended! The toritallas tasted hand maid and amazing as well. The guacamole was so delicious. All the food was great, except the coffee tasted like it was sitting in the pot for hours, it was burnt. Everyone was friendly, and the ambiance was great. read more

This is my favorite place near Ensenada and worth every bumpy road on the way there! Nestled in wine country, this homie and welcoming restaurante serves up delicious traditional food and outstanding service all for an exceptional price. My whole family loved it and we fed four for well under $40 USD. read more

The hype is real & the line is so worth it! We came on a Sunday and arrived at around 10:30am. Got seated by 12pm. Not bad considering I was mentally preparing for 2 hours! Also there were a couple of vendors selling snacks & other things so that helped time pass & growling stomach. When we got seated the service was quick! We were immediately given complimentary chips, salsa(too spicy for me but I'm a baby) and queso. What I got: Jose Combination - machaca & red sauce chilaquiles, eggs over easy. SOOO GOOD! I wish I could have eaten it all! Lamb Birria - Star of the show. The meat was flavorful. Elote pancakes - this was my highlight! This was so unique and delicious. Fluffy yet crispy at the same time! Talk about living up to the hype! Their Michelin star is well deserved! Went on wkend trip with friends and the staff was so nice and got great food recommendations. We ordered the corn pancakes, Lomo soup, machaca plate, and gorditas! Plus cafe de olla, OJ, and a side of fresh sliced avocado. Omg my taste buds couldn't get enough and we ate almost everything! If you want to get your authentic Mexican food fix while wining and dining in the Guadalupe valley then you must take a trip to the famous Kitchen of Mrs. Esthela. We read the warnings about long wait times and showed up at exactly the 8am opening. It wasn't terribly difficult to find as we just followed the trail of other vehicles bearing US license plates. The location is off of paved roads so you can expect the final mile to be quite bumpy. We were seated immediately at 8 am, but, the restaurant seemed to fill up pretty shortly thereafter. There was a line of folks waiting to get in as we left and cars still making their way up the dirt road to the restaurant. The trek, however, is well worth it. As for the kitchen - Imagine traditional Mexican fare with all the rich flavors and textures. Not wanting to miss out we wound up ordering far too much food: Beef Machaca, stewed Beef tacos, chilaquiles with beef and eggs, and the famous corn pancakes. You can't forget the hand made flour and corn tortillas to boot. Some locals sitting at the table next to us insisted that we try the sheep stewed beef and literally got a half order to be sure we try them. I would say the Borrego (not lamb) was not gamey at all and when doctored up with the onion, cilantro, lime, and salsa was phenomenal. Our waitress suggested we get a side of beef consommé to add to the machaca and beef tacos. What a rich and flavorful addition. The rave reviews for Doña Esthela are completely accurate and you will not want to miss this place while in Valle de Guadalupe. What an amazing way to celebrate the final breakfast of 2023! read more
