I thoroughly enjoy checking out bakeries and especially enjoy scoping out all the types of bakeries that San Diego has to offer. Wanting to keep in extra local, John B. and I opted to trying out La Concha Bakery since we grabbed lunch in the area. I've been to a few panaderias, but really enjoyed the offerings and variety at La Concha. //FOOD// Bavarian Cream Empanada (Turnover filled with Bavarian cream and dusted with granulated sugar) - I enjoyed this a lot. Simple, but lets you really enjoy the Bavarian cream. Besos/Ojo de Buey (Two cookies stuck together with raspberry jam and covered in coconut) - My unexpected favorite. The cookies were tender and not dry and crumbly. I also liked that there wasn't too much coconut or too much of the jam. Definitely getting this one again. Cherry Empanada - Tasty and glad we tried it but was just okay. Chocolate Concha / Vanilla Concha (A sweet egg rich dough covered with a chocolate/vanilla sugar shell pattern on top) - Classic and want to enjoy these with some hot chocolate the next time around. Cono (Danish dough filled with Bavarian cream) - I liked this but preferred the Bavarian Cream Empanada. Picadillo, Ground Beef Empanada - Nice savory option. They also ask if you want it heated up. //PARKING// There's a lot with limited parking in front of the store. We opted with street parking nearby because it looked a bit tight to maneuver. Since we went on a Sunday, we didn't have to pay for the metered parking. //MISC// As of February 20th, the COVID protocols were that only 4 customers were allowed inside. I don't believe customers were required to wear masks, but all the workers inside were wearing masks. I wish I familiarized myself with the menu more beforehand because it was a little hard reading all the labels of the treats in the back (I'll blame this more on my nearsightedness though). The lady who helped us was very patient with us as we made our selections, and we appreciated it! Also worth noting that the bakery is open everyday (6am - 8:30pm, though this differs slightly on their website). If you want to avoid the line, their website has the option to order ahead. Will definitely be back to try out more of the pan dulce offerings and definitely recommend it to those who haven't tried this bakery yet read more

I was astounded by the customer service that I received kudos to Claudia Hernandez she went out of her way to help me even ordering balloons from a different source had nothing to do with bakery service, you can't find this type of customer service anymore beyond above and beyond!!! NOT WORTH THE WAIT AND HASSLE! After nearly two years of not patronizing La Concha because of the pandemic, I pulled into their very small parking lot in anticipation of getting some Pan Dulce on this Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022. Upon entering the place I was disappointed in noticing that it looked like a Covid-era fortress. The pan was completely barricaded from customers and there was pedi-glass galore surrounding all items for sale. That is, you no longer get to select your own pan! There was a line of four people waiting for the one attendant that was at the register. I wasn't about to wait. So, what's up with this? I understand taking strict precautions during and just following the pandemic. I also understand that private business can set whatever rules are legally permissible and can set policies within their business operations. But, really? Covid has pretty much come and gone and the vast majority of us are fully vaccinated. Also, the majority of businesses are fully open to pre-pandemic operations. La Concha's Pan Dulce is good, but not worth the hassle of waiting in line and then having to explain to the one attendant what they have and what you want. I l guess I will continue to get my pan from El Super! El Super's pan is just as good and you get to select your choices on the fly yourself! Not ever returning to La Concha. Oh! As another poster pointed out, the employees/bakers apparently aren't wearing their masks properly/all the time while preparing the pan. So, they want us (the customers) to not contaminate the pan/premises, but they expect us to trust them with what we buy from them? Something doesn't look right about this picture! read more

So on Friday March 20th I went to pick up a cake that I ordered for my sister's 30th birthday. When my husband went to pick up the cake, the workers couldn't find it. They had mistakenly given it to someone else. I was very upset because the cake was supposed to be for my sister. Fortunately the owner of this bakery made her best effort to make it up to me. She made me a new cake, not exactly like the one they had previously made but similar. She even delivered the cake to my house. I understand we're only human and we make mistakes but I am actually grateful for her, she made her best to make me feel better. The cake tasted really good so I will definitely be ordering more cakes from there. read more

I went on a Thursday to order a birthday cake for a Sunday pickup. I wanted a round Neapolitan cake to serve around 25 people, I was told they couldn't do it. They talked me into ordering a square 1/4 size Neapolitan cake. When I started to slice the cake, I had a hard time cutting through it, come to find out, they left a paper liner in the middle of cake (YUCK) and no cream filling what so ever. My friends saw what I pulled out and a lot of them said "no thank you" to a slice. I ended up throwing half of the cake away. My friend who referred me to this bakery, told me to take a picture to show them and demand for my money back. The bread is good, but there was a young man there who was extremely rude to me. There was a line with only one register open, then the young man opened up another register but I didnt notice as i was focused on the main register as well as trying to line my money up to pay. I was next in line but when he called the first time i didn't hear and once he got my attention he scoffed at me as if I was a total idiot for not hearing him the first time. Then he proceeded to check me out speaking with attitude and a angry face the whole time. Terrible service never coming back and me and my family have been coming for years. Great bakery , very small but they make magic in that little space. Their bread is well known by all neighborhood. Today I got Pan de muerto very soft, fluffy and cover with slight sugar in the top. Also they have they have aros con lech and jello of different flavor so yummy. I recommend this bakery but be patient because the line is long. read more

I have bought rosca here in the past and it was spectacular. Recently came to pick up guava and pina empanadas. They are so buttery and flaky. I also bought a meat empanada and a cheese and jalapeño empanada and they were so delicious. Since I was sinning anyway, I also ordered a slice of tiramisu cake and chocolate cake. I think that the tiramisu was pretty good and the lady fingers in it were fresh and of good quality. The chocolate cake was perfect. I highly recommend this bakery. Worst bakery I have ever been too I was referred to this bakery by my sister so last week I placed a order for my 16 years old boy birthday Neapolitan flavor since the moment I picked up the cake it has small cracks nothing major didn't made a big deal or said anything worst mistake because I wash such in a rush but by the time I got home 15 minutes drive it was super cracked I called the bakery and the lady in charged there said it was my fault because of the way i drove home really ok I let the one slide by 4pm the cake started to melt on it's on I called the bakery they told me that the lady In charged wasn't there left my number so she would call me back never bother too,today 04/12/21 called first thing in the morning n the lady that answer phone same lady that gave me cake yesterday I explained to her in a good way me telling her miss I'm not arguing with you I'm explaining to you the situation and what happened she got mad blaming me to all fault for everything that happened to the cake when I told her about the cake melting she was like your fault for leaving it in the car for so long really wtf why would I leave the cake in car for hours she was so RUDE and disrespectful I told her I didn't left the cake in my car I took it straight home after the bakery she hang up the phone on me so I called back and she did it again rude bitch unprofessional at no point I ever asked for my money back $125 dollars not worth for the shitty cake they made they can keep that money because they surely do need it to hired new employees NEVER going back n surely would never recommend!!!!! read more
