I had been staying at the Hotel Motel Holiday Inn near by and walking around my new neighborhood I stumbled across Barrio Donas, I didn't realize they had a location in National City so I was really excited. They open really early which I appreciate, so I was able to get an iced horchata matcha and a couple donuts before I started work. Barista was super friendly and got my matcha made so quickly, which I really appreciated. The store front is super cute, I hope they get a lot of business because the donuts are really good I just wish they wouldn't put them in a paper bag, the toppings were stuck to the paper. read more

I've had Barrio Donas a couple of times now thanks to coworkers and they are sooo good. The presentation on these donuts is everything. I always say I'm not really a sweets person and I wouldn't go out of my way to get donuts, but if I happen to be nearby, I'm 100% stopping in for one. That's how you know they're worth it. So far I've tried the cajeta and the jamaica 10/10 plus one more I can't remember the name of, but everything I've had has been really good. The donuts are super soft, fresh, and just hit. Have shown up there twice trying to grab donuts before work for the office 10 to 15 minutes after their advertised hours of being open and the building was dark both times that I went. I tried one of their donuts at coffee culture, and it was delicious. But it has been unfortunate that I keep leaving early in the morning and their hours are falsely advertised. Pretty good donuts! I got them for an event Nd at the time they were pretty cold so it's difficult for me to say anything in specific about them when being served fresh. As some have mentioned in the other reviews, the donuts look really nice! But the flavor for some of them could be a stronger. Not to say that they are bad becuase they were quite tasty, I just wish they did had a little bit of a better flavor. Since these were brought in, I can not say anything about the service of the store. I can talk about the box that it came in though. It was a clean and very nice box. I thought it was really nice and added to a good first impression of the shop. Overall, I would recommend trying this place a little more fresh. This cute and quaint hidden gem is tucked away in national city. Parking: street parking on a fairly busy road. Food: delicious!! My daughter and I enjoyed the chocolate abuelita donut. It had marshmellows on it. The dough was nice and fluffy, not too sweet. I was in the mood for an iced coffee. The sweet lady who helped us recommended the de olla cold brew and horchata. Omg it was sooo good! I want to come back just to try the horchata by itself. Ambiance: so cute and aesthetically pleasing! We love the neon sign and colorful interior. There's merchandise for purchase as well. Seating is available inside as well as an outdoor standing area. Kudos to the team here who helped all of us mamas and babies at the mama meet up! Wow! I just found out about this place! We're vegan so our options for donuts are pretty limited. I have my go to place and it's very good and they have tons of actual food for me that I like, and this place doesn't ....HOWEVER... these donuts are much better. They have the fluffy donuts and in my 15 years of being vegan I've never had any this good. They had 4 vegan flavors and they were soooo good. I also got a cold brew with oatchata and it was Bomb! I came in for the first time today 6:50am very quiet and i was under the impression they would have a lot of doughnuts and stuff to choose from but to my surprise there wasn't. Another trendy place that is only advertised because it's cute and not because it's good.. :/ I appreciate what they are doing serving more Hispanic inspired donuts but these are just way too much. We walked in and had to wait for the food omen behind the counter before we could order. The display was nice but it seemed very empty like there wasn't a lot of donuts.. and the decor inside was very pretty in a cute elementary school kind of way. We ordered a half a dozen doughnuts.. the Mango, 2 Mexican Vanilla, Gansito, Reese's Mazapan, and Hotchata. And we got a Fresas con Crema Horchata drink and Champurrado. The Mango doughnut had the best flavor but it was because of the filling. The Mexican Vanilla doughnut was way too sweet, the Gansito was over fried and so hard to bite into! It was visibly apparent that it was over fried because of the color of the dough and yet they still served it.. the Mazapan doughnut was too dry, crumbly and messy.. and the Hortchata doughnut was lacking flavor.. unfortunately the base of the doughnut, or the bread, isn't a good recipe.. The Fresas con Crema Horchata drink was decent and so was the Champurrado but they weren't anything I'd come back for.. This is definitely a place you want to visit as early as you can if you want to have options for the donuts. When went later in the afternoon and the donut options were very limited. We ordered: a strawberry drink, topochico preparado, an arroz con leche donut (the arroz filling could be sweeter and cooked a little bit more) and a Carlotta de limon donut (this tasted great). The service was great and the lady working this day was friendly and attentive. They did have music playing but nothing too overwhelming. read more

I was surprised to see this place finally open after hearing about one opening in my city so that was quite a nice surprise. Came in very early before a drive to LA, and it was a really cool experience. Parking is street, but that section of National City Blvd doesn't get too busy so there was plenty. Inside the place is pretty decked out, with a nice arrangement of tables, decor, and then the amazing glass case of donuts. The menu said they're currently in a soft opening, but from what I remember there are the prices for donuts, plus coffee drinks, and I believe even some food options. I ended up with a mango donut which was a mango-filled one with some mango sprinkled topping. That one was very delicious. I did see some of my favorites from the original location like the jamaica glazed donut, plus some new ones I haven't tried (will come back to try them!) like the carlota di limon that had a cookie sticking out of it. Service was exceptional, especially being that early, as the server was nice and friendly. Very easy to order and pay, and the prices weren't too bad. Also saw that they were selling branded shirts which had a cool design. Overall, glad that this is finally here and hope to come back very soon! read more

This is a cute little place. Was on my way to work and wanted to try something new. Should have gotten there a bit earlier however the selections that were left weren't slim or bad. I got different type of doughnuts as this was my first time there and an horchata that was fresas con crema flavor. The horchata was so good! The doughnuts were soft, fluffy, and really good as well. Popped by this morning. It's hidden behind the Market on 8th and is right across from Napoleon's Pizza. They had a good selection of donuts. I've been to their Clairemont location and I have to say this seems to have more seating. I ordered the chocolate abuelita donut and a churro donut. Enjoyed them both. Total was $7 for two donuts (so $3.50 a pop). This area is dependent on side street parking. read more

Great customer service! Especially for that early on the morning! Had a coffee and a rice pudding donut. Both are good! Also, and I wasn't expecting this from the outside because I believe the windows are tinted, but the decor indoors was cute. I'm pretty sure it's their branding. When I found out Barrio Donas was finally coming closer to me I had to check it out! I was not disappointed. The staff were super nice and welcoming. There was not a big selection to choose from since I went towards closing time, but was still able to try everything they had. The donuts were still very fresh, fluffy and not dense at all. I always like finding new coffee shops other than the big coffee shops. I found this place. It has street parking right in front of the business. A little outside area if you want to enjoy the weather and people/car watch. You walk in you see a variety of donut in the case and two TVs with the menu on them. Today, I chose the crema (aka Boston cream) and a torta and a Mexican coffee. Everything is made fresh to order. So if you are in a hurry this might not be the place for you, unless you want a donut. But, I must say the donuts are fresh as well. The coffee is different. I have never had a Mexican coffee before. It is very tasty though. The service is great as well. Very friendly. read more

I have been to this shop many times now and brought various friends and family each time for them to enjoy what I did at Barrio Donas! I saw the instagram and it looked appealing but the fact that they had vegan doughnuts is what really sold me. My daughter has many food allergies (mainly egg, peanuts and tree nuts) so finding vegan doughnuts she can have is tough. she absolutely loves this place and it had become our weekend ritual. my one complaint is that the national city location has no way to call and check if there is any vegan doughnuts available. Unfortunately the last few times i drove there and there were none available and my daughter was disappointed. It would be really helpful to get some communication to the store front for this issue. I did ask a worker and they explained that the Claremont location sends a variety of inventory and i did try to reach out via IG to ask for any solutions but didn't get any feedback. read more

I've been looking forward to this location of Barrio Donas opening for months as I love the Clairemont location and this new one would be closer to home. Unfortunately, it was such a disappointing experience on almost every front. We arrived around noon on Saturday and there were already slim pickings left which was pretty disappointing in itself. However the main issue was the customer service. It was immediately apparent that this was not a priority for the staff working at the time. Things got off to a bad start when we asked for a receipt and apparently that was a huge inconvenience. It took like 10 minutes and a second person to come by with a bunch of disgruntled interactions just to have one sent by text. Printing one was apparently impossible. I didn't expect that getting a receipt would be such a cumbersome request. We asked about whether there would be better stock later and that interaction alone felt like we were just bothering them. For whatever reason, they also decided to package our 5 donuts in 2 boxes with 2 each and the 5th in a paper sleeve. We had to request a box because this made no sense but the entire interaction felt like a chore. I wish I had taken photos of the amount of excess boxes and packaging that we had to throw away and consolidate on our own because of this odd choice. The Mexican chocolate donut we got was smeared with hibiscus glaze (I think?) and I requested if it could be swapped out with another one that didn't have this issue. Apparently that was an impossible request so I ended up having to buy another one just so I could have a donut that wasn't a hibiscus/chocolate hybrid. The taste of the donuts was good. At least the ones we were able to try. I assume it is the exact same product as what is sold at the other locations so that was consistent at least. It's unfortunate that it isn't stocked to meet demand halfway through the day. Overall the customer service just soured the entire experience. One of the things I like about the Clairemont location is how well they treat you and this was a far cry from what I would expect. Overall I would not recommend going here at all and just going to one of the other locations instead. I might try this again in another year but it is clear that this isn't a place where you can feel welcomed and happy. I'll just spend a few extra minutes and drive to one of the other locations instead of taking a gamble on whatever is going on here. Hopefully things can get straightened out over time as I'd really like this location to work out. They have a good product and atmosphere going on here, but the customer service and product stock issues really detract from the overall experience. read more

I stopped for the first time this morning around 7:15 looking for the mango donuts, which according to the menu, they offer. We waited 7 min all while looking at a sad selection of donuts and empty shelves. No typical smell of coffee or baked goods. When the girl finally came out, she reached for the control to turn on the TVs with the menu, saw all 3 of us there, and didn't even acknowledge us- no good morning, or what can I get you...nothing. We said good morning, asked about the mango donuts and she replied with a simple no. She wasn't even aware they made them. We planned to try the coffee and breakfast tortas, aside from the donuts, but after experiencing the sad looking place and and the unmotivated employee, we left. I will not be trying the Clairemont location because the standards set and training should be the same across all stores and that it's not what I look for in any business. read more

We visited the Barrio Donas this week and were left disappointed. The donuts were alright. The chocolate abuelita donut was good but the ganzito donut was dry. The lady that took our order was absolutely so rude. She didn't even bother to greet or look at us when we entered. The only words she said to us was our total. Amazing donuts of the ultrasweet, highly fristed variety. Like mini-cakes. Nice people. But: They have trouble getting started on time and have proven unreliable. Not every potential customer of this store wants all that sugar, especially first thing in the morning.This neighborhood starts early.....with a very early commute of Navy personnel, shipyard workers, dockworkers and others.
