During crawfish season, the place is packed on the weekends and sports nights. Parking is a bit difficult, since there isn't many My suggestion is going before or after the peak times if you want to be seated quickly. You are only allowed to order when there are tables available, so a line will form and sometimes out the door! It's worth the wait, but if you can't wait, I'd suggest ordering to-go.
About the flavors: Garlic Butter, Cajun Style, and Hot & Sour. Garlic butter is just what you think it is. Lots of garlic and lots of butter, covering the seafood in delicious flavor. Cajun style is that seasoning that many traditionalists are accustomed too. Hot & Sour is a sour tangy flavor, reminiscent of Thai or South Asian style. Don't mind the paste that covers the mudbugs; let it transfer from your fingers to the meat. Both my GF and I enjoy garlic butter the most. It's worth having if you are used to cajun spice. We typically get Med Spicy, which lingers on your tongue for a short while, but snot begins to run down your nose after the first dozen. Oh, don't forget to add sausage, potato, and corn. These are essential... every time.
During 2015; we tried many crawfish to see which one we liked the best. After the Buzzfeed tasting 2k15 videos, we started our own scale.
I would rate their crawfish like this:
***Size (during season): 4.5 of 5. While they are all large, there are some bitty ones that join in the bag. Not a bad thing, since 13-15 big ones will reach a pound quickly.
***Spicy: 4 of 5. It definitely is spicy and does not take away from any flavor. I am a wimp, so Med Spicy is enough for me.
***Meat: 4 of 5. Fresh crawfish cooked to the way you like it. Tender and soft, and soaked in flavor. Warning though, in the off-season or pre-season, you may get flaky meat, which disintegrate as you peel them. Yes, that's no good, but this review is only for the season.
***Special Scale! Juice (from the head): 5 of 5. When I was dumb and naive, I thought it was disgusting to suck the juice out. I was wrong, so wrong. The cholesterol-filled eggs and the broth of crawfish and spice mix into a powerful shot of OHH YEAH! It blew my mind, so I hope it definitely does the same to you.
Overall crawfish score: 4.5 of 5. We keep coming back, probably once a month during the 2015 season. It's our home base for crawfish and the standard in which we judge. I wholeheartedly recommend going to the location at 99 Ranch, since patrons swear the original is the best. We just go to Richmond because it has been solid every time.
OTHER STUFF:
Try their oysters on the half, with different toppings they add, it's certainly a different way than tabasco and horse-radish. Only served by the dozen, so be hungry or dine with friends. Another appetizer worth getting are the wings! Jalapeño pepper is by far our favorite, and the 5-spice (not spicy) basil isn't bad either!
During the offseason, I recommend their crawfish pho! I get this during those cold fall days where you need a nice warm meal. My GF has to stop me from drinking all the soup! There is a spicy pho challenge at this location, but I've never tried. I don't see any award photos on the wall, so you could be the first.
All in all, I rate LA Crawfish 5 stars because I enjoy going back time after time, and not just during crawfish season. It is BYOB (beer and wine only AFAIK), no liquor. Plenty of sports on the screens and a great atmosphere. I don't mind the wait or the busy hours, but if that is really important to you, make sure you go during a weeknight or early. Parking is a pain too, since the inner spots are usually reserved for a store, with the outer spots as a free-for-all. Sometime you can park along Portsmouth St, but you might be competing with movie goers.
I hope this helps sway your decision for tonight or tomorrow or the weekend! Crawfish season comes and goes before you know it, so don't forget to stop by LA Crawfish. read more
