When you first walk in, you'll be impressed with La Cuchara's space and decor. It's large, sleek, employs the open kitchen concept, and certainly fits well with the feel that the Woodberry area exudes. The food is quite expensive, especially when you try any of La Cuchara's pre fixe menus during the many events that they host. However, I'd say it's worth it. Some pintxos items can be hit or miss, but a lot of their starters and entrees are largely delicious. Bread and dessert also deserve praise. Service is fantastic, and there's plenty of parking spaces in the vicinity. read more

But recently, during quarantine, they have been doing grocery pick ups with all the essentials. Everything is high quality and there are ready to eat meals too. We enjoyed an absolutely beautiful evening at La Cuchara. The vibe in the restaurant is relaxed and not pretentious, with cool old spoons decorating the walls. The dining menu is more reflective of a tapas restaurant, but there are some great looking entrees on there. We stuck with the appetizers and small plates. The charcuterie selection is excellent and the lamb meatballs were delicious. Our favorite was the shrimp dish though! The food was excellent, but La Cuchara seems to be known for having a stand out wine list. There was a huge selection of great bottles, but we went with a Beaujolais. The somm helped guide us through the bottle's flavors and shared some great wine knowledge. The somm mentioned that Sunday's are half price bottle days - that would be an awesome way to try some more expensive bottles. We had a great meal here! I made a reservation here and when I showed up there were four parties waiting to be seated and no host. When I finally spoke to the host she told us 15 mins which okay fine but with a reservation why is the wait so long? Then she simply forgot about my party (of three) and sat the party of three that came in behind us. We waited for an hour before leaving. Generally, I'm a pretty big fan. The space is lovely, the food is delicious, and the service is great. Recently, two weird things have happened that I think La Cuchara should be aware of. So, it's a small plates restaurant right? That means you order small plates, generally more than one, and usually enough to fill you up. Well, I'll admit it. I like to eat. I'm a very hungry person. But recently I was there, had like two pintxos, a plate of the patatas bravas, and our server brought the dessert menu. She wasn't like, "Are you ready for dessert?" or "Is there anything else I can get you?" Nope. It was like, you've eaten enough, now wrap it up and leave. Well, I was too humiliated to say anything really, and so was my partner. So we paid our bill and went home and ate dinner. Kinda embarrassing and really disappointing. The second time was just last week, and I was at the bar for happy hour. I ordered a number of small plates again (I learned to get my orders in early so they know that I am hungry!), and this woman working behind the bar kept coming up and trying to clear the plates when they obviously still had food on them. She's like "Can I take this?" And I'm like, "No, there's still food on the plate." And she just stares like she can't comprehend that I might want to eat the food that I'm planning to pay for instead of sending it to the great beyond. This happened a few times and then she just stopped interacting with us. It was weird. So what's up, La Cuchara? Why the weird service? There seems to be some amount of surprise that people want to eat food, or finish food, or perhaps have another small plate. read more

La Cuchara is a nice addition to the area with some outdoor seating and a modern, new American vibe indoors. Menu has good variety with several small plates and satisfying drink options (but probably don't order sherry if you don't know what it is; they'll let you try it or a wine is you like before making a final decision). Anyway, there's only one main vegetarian entree which is par for the course for similar restaurants but the small plates and cheeses were plenty to supplement a full meal for two. The oyster mushrooms were excellent, and the patatas bravas are a staple here. The place attracts a younger adult crowd and is a great spot for happy hour as well. After eating here as a vegetarian once, the place is prob best experienced for happy hour to continue to get the full utilization unless you're craving the mushrooms or they mix up the options. read more

The best culinary experience I've ever had in Baltimore and I've lived here for close to 10 years. La Cuchara can do nothing wrong when it comes to food. Everything from the ambience, to the customer service, to the food was on point! My fiancé and I came for restaurant week. For appetizers, I had the lobster soup and she had the blue crab croquettes. They used generous portions of lobster and blue crab in our dishes. Lobster bisque was hands-down one of the best tasting soups I've ever had. For entrees, I had the lamb shoulder while she had the squid ink pasta. The lamb was cooked so well. No gaminess and so so tender. So much so that my fiancé who normally hates lamb wanted to trade plates (Obviously I politely declined). Her squid ink pasta was delicious as well. In her opinion, one of the best she's ever had. The seafood was cooked perfectly, tender and not rubbery. The pasta, sauce, and seafood worked together in unison and flavors were perfectly balanced. Everything was topped off with chocolate Mousse which was also fantastic topped with Peanut brittle chunks giving it a delightful crunchy and smooth texture. Service was superb. Food came out promptly. The manager made sure our drinks were full and that we were cared for. Once again, best culinary experience in Baltimore to date. read more

My rating is for happy hour as that's the only time I've been. But man, is it a great one. My husband and I got wine, cocktails, and six small plates for about 50 bucks before tax and tip. And it was all super good! We arrived at about 5pm on a Friday and just sat at the bar. The interior is huge, good for date night or for meeting friends alike. We tried the shrimp beignet, ham balls, roasted beets, chicken thigh, calamari, and patatas bravas. We didn't need maybe one or two of the items because we were so full. Yes, you can get full on small plates and imo it's desirable because you can sample so many different flavors. We also tried the house-made mango ginger sorbet. s o g o o d. god. Service was polite and quick as hell, and parking was a breeze in the Mill lot, though I don't think you can leave your car there for long? Not sure, that isn't totally clear. We'll be back time and time again for a great happy hour and will try it reservation style for entrees sometime in the future, but def a special occasion as non-HH is obviously more expensive. read more

If I could break my review down my category (& also give half stars!) it'd be as follows: Service: 3.5 Food: 3 Drinks: 4 Service: 3 Ambiance/decor: 5 Though it is a Spanish-style restaurant, I wasn't expecting to receive Spanish-style service and dine as the Spaniards do... the waiter would go on and on and on and basically read the entire menu to us, but then would disappear for 20 minutes when we were actually ready to order or when we needed something. There was just sooo much time in between courses. As for the food itself, it was just ok. I had heard people rave about this place, so I will admit that my expectations were high. Everything was a bit too salty and though my boyfriend asked for his steak to be cooked medium - that thing was basically still mooing given how much blood was oozing out of it (yes I know I know, we should've said something, but we've both worked in the service industry and know too much about what often goes on, so we're never ones to send something back). I've been here for restaurant week during the summer & had to come back for winter. We had reservarious for 4 at 7:30 yesterday and had been told people were lingering, so we had a little wait. We headed to the bar for drinks, and suddenly 30 mins, 45 mins roll by & we're starving. An hour later all 4 of us returned to the front to inquire about our table for the third time & while the hostess was apologetic we were hangry! We were finally seated, Marco the manager took amazing care of us. To our surprise we had a complimentary bottle of champagne waiting for us & truly enjoyed ourselves with the incredibly attentive service. We ordered an amazing 4 lbs steak with a paired a delicious bottle of red. Food, drinks, ambiance were just as amazing as the summer. Creativity was their selling point. Basque food is a different region of Spanish food in that the spices are a little different. After having a meal here, I would even say that Basque food doesn't have much distinctive spices at all. The food seemed to be created so that the ingredients would speak for themselves. They included really interesting ingredients together like blood sausage and crispy kale that didn't end up tasting the best but they really went beyond expectations. Great date spot. It's a little out of the way for me and I'm not going to lie I got super confused trying to get to it, but I love this place. I love this place whole heartedly and unabashedly. I call on you to call me pretentious and overly generous with my five star reviews go ahead. I welcome it. Happy hour is the obvious choice with their half off bites and appetizers - you can feed yourself like a king without actually shelling out the moulah - much like the kings of old. I've never eaten something I didn't like, and additionally, I've heard that restaurants have been measured against the quality of their bread and this one stands up to it I tell you. After the first visit I can say I will return!! I loved everything I got, the service was phenomenal, and the atmosphere was mind blowingly unique. The fare is inspired by traditional basque cuisine which is something I'm not very familiar with. I loved the complimentary fresh-baked bread. We ordered the pan con tomate and the full charcuterie plate for an appetizer and I was more than delighted by the jamon serrano which is definitely a favorite of mine. And In Conclusion....... I wanted to, but just didn't love La Cuchara. We ordered 4 dishes and 3 of them had way too much oil. The brussels sprouts were almost all way too undercooked. I've actually never had rock hard sprouts. So at least I tried something new? The Bronzino was the worst olive oil offender. The fish was delicious, but the Bronzino is plated on top of broccoli and the broccoli is sitting in a pool of olive oil. So I basically had to wipe the broccoli around the rim of the plate to try to get some of the olive oil out of every bite. I have no idea why you would use so much olive oil in any dish at all. Once I had eaten the Bronzino, I ended up not eating half of the broccoli because it was just sopping in oil. I probably threw away $10 worth of food because it was just inedible. I don't think we will be back. There are just a lot of better restuarants in Baltimore. read more

I've walked past La Cuchara on my way home from the light rail for months and am pretty miffed that it took this long for me to give it a whirl. Its happy hour is fantastic if you're looking for creative, shareable apps at a reasonable price. The bar is quite large, so even on the cold Friday evening when I visited there was (nearly) enough seating for the large crowd. Every single dish that we ordered was delicious, but several of them were fabulous - my personal favorites were the fried oysters and the lamb. I'm going to avoid the urge to describe each dish in delicious detail as the menu rotates daily, but know this: you will not be disappointed. Aside from the food, the drinks are fantastic. On the night that I went in the happy hour cocktail offered was a gin and tonic du jours. Quite tasty. The service alone was a reason to go back; our waiter was very attentive and very helpful when asked to describe menu items and suggest dishes. Added bonus to La Cuchara for being one of the few restaurants in Hampden to offer on-site parking. What a boon! read more

Apparently the menu changes all the time, so I won't waste too much breath recommending specific dishes, but I will say that if you get a chance to try the golden eggs, DO IT! They're like deviled eggs but with squid ink and saffron mixed into the yolk... Just incredible. Service was very attentive even though the restaurant was full, and on Christmas eve! We also discovered that on Sunday nights, all $100+ bottles are half off, so we got a very nice bottle of wine at only about a 10% markup; quite a rare find at a fine dining establishment like this one. One last note: okay, the restaurant is a little out of the way. But the food here is as good as it is hard to find. Generally pretty good food and decent service, but it's definitely a mixed bag. First time we went, service was bad but it looked like the waiter was new and just learning... but the food was great. Second time, server was attentive and got everything right, but the table next to us had a different server that seemed to have forgotten a bunch of their items. The second time around, the food was also a little underwhelming. The steak was completely under-seasoned (might not have been seasoned at all?) and everything was just OK (with high prices mind you). They also have that weird habit of making you wait to be seated even though you can see empty, set tables and you have a reservation. Just went back for the second time last night and had an amazing experience, once again! I'm a somewhat picky eater, but I've been able to try plenty of items on the menu here and loved everything! First of all, the staff is so so nice and really create an experience for you. "Red" is the one who sat us and helped educate us on the drink menu. I liked how passionate he was about the ciders, wines, etc. He wasn't even our server but came and checked in on us throughout the meal. Our server Brittany was the best!! If we wouldn't have asked, we would have thought she'd been there for years because she knew so much! She walked us through the entire menu, which was much-needed because if she hadn't I probably would have had to google a lot of it. She helped pair the wine with the meal perfectly, which we needed help with too... The food was just amazing, and like I said I am a pretty picky eater. Starting with the yummy homemade bread. Both times we've been we had the croquettes. They. Are. Amazing. Gruyere cheese and Serrano in a fried ball. They are sooo delicious and definitely a must. We put together a charcuterie board with some cheese and meats. My boyfriend got the Bronzino and I got the vegetarian option (I can't remember the name of the dish) and we both loved our meals! We ended by sharing the vanilla ice cream garnished with a little brownie. Perfect ending to a fantastic meal and evening! Can't wait to go back. The bar looks fun to sit at. I love this place and I agree that it is hands down one of the best food experiences in Baltimore. The service is impeccable, the food interesting and delicious and the space is warm and inviting. We came here on a Thursday night and spend three hours enjoying all the restaurant had to order. Brent, our server, was so knowledgeable and everything he recommended was absolutely amazing. Since I loved every morsel I put in my mouth, I will say that the two things that I thought were just good was the charred noodles and apple- pear Paris-Berst. Best to skip these since compared to all the other food, they were just OK. We even liked the bus boy, Mike, who had the most amazing baritone voice and had a great sense of humor. He immediately brought out olives and bread for us to snack on, while we were waiting on our drinks. We shared a few of the pintxos (essentially tapas) and each got an entree. The entrees were excellent, but the pintxos were the real stars of the show - my personal favorite were the crispy pigs ears. I enjoyed my experience here. A bit of a "hiccup" while dining, I'll get to that in a bit. We were there for happy hour, where you get Pinxtos and Primeros for 1/2 price! Definitely recommend going a bit early if you can; this allows you to experience a broad selection of offerings for a great price. Let's start with the food Pinxtos: - Gildas (Boquerones, Piquillo, Olive) - pretty decent, a nice amuse bouche - The Chorizo, Manchego, Shishito Chile, Dijon, Baguette, drizzled with olive oil - a very tasty combination, it hit the salt, fat, acid notes in a very nice and balanced way - Blistered Shishitos - tasty, but not a flavor explosion. Shishitos are pretty bland by themselves Primeros: - Morels & Porcini mushrooms - sauteed in a flavorful but mild oil. Delicious! Morels need to be the star here, and they were. - Brussels sprouts - in a honey & chili glaze, with a very nice goat cheese. Potentially outstanding, but this time were just good. Under-salted for my palate. We also got some of the Jambon Bayonne, and Marcona Almonds (roasted with salt, a touch of sugar) - eaten together, we almost enjoyed a fake Iberico ham (which, sadly, they were out of) Dessert: - Jamon Iberico ice cream with PX reduction - good concept, decently executed. The ice cream wasn't as rich as I'd hoped (a tad "grainy" or ice crystals too big), and I didn't get much of the Iberico ham essence (they were included as little bits of ham, probably sprinkled on top), and the PX reduction was excellent. - Hazelnut flan - the flan and caramel were outstanding. The flan texture was beautifully silky. The rhubarb, however, was fibrous and not too sweet. I'm not sure this dish needed the rhubarb. I suspect the attempt was to add a sour note to play off the sweet, but it fell short. And now to the service - Overall, really good service. The staff was pleasant and very attentive. We talked about the food, the Basque region, food styles near the border with France, and learned about and sampled Basque ciders, which are much less sweet than what most people are probably used to. And better for it, if different. The hiccup was this: my guest has Celiac, and explained she needed to have gluten-free items. The staff told us the brussels sprouts were gluten free, but once we received them, we asked if they'd been grilled, roasted, or fried. They were deep fried, in the same fryer where breaded products are cooked. For Celiac, this is a (nuanced) no-go, as there's a "cross-contamination" potential for those with severe Celiac. We caught this before anyone ate the brussels sprouts, and the staff and manager apologized a couple of times. Sounded to us like they'd use it as a learning experience to (re)educate their servers. They were generally very aware of gluten products in all their food. No harm, no foul, as they say. Re: GF & other allergies, La Cuchara should perhaps make an "allergen menu" to clearly identify which items contain these. Overall: very good food, and very good service. The food was excellent and once our server came to us (10 minutes after being seated! Arrrgh!!), she could not have been more attentive! I do not recommend the cold smoked mussels but I think for $2, it wasn't the worst thing ever; I just don't like smoked flavor in foods. The Jamon y queso charcuterie platter was excellent. The lamb shoulder and duck entrees were excellent. The churros and pistachio ice cream were excellent. The champagne flight was quite good but I mostly enjoyed the Cava (Spanish champagne) so I would have been happy with just a bottle of that. Oops, I mean a glass lol. The food is locally sourced from what I understand so I understood when they ran out of the crispy oysters and Rockfish but I really wanted to try them. Maybe next time. Happy hour deals are amazing. Really - all pinxos and primeros are half off, giving you the chance to try a lot of different and unique dishes without a huge commitment if you don't like it. If you're even mildly adventurous in your food, you'll enjoy the dishes here at La Cuchara. For the pinxos, I had the golden egg, gildas, and roasted red pepper soup. The golden egg was cool because of the squid ink, otherwise tasting just like a typical deviled egg. For a dollar though, it's cool to say you got to have squid ink! Gildas weren't really my speed--to be honest, I didn't know what gildas were when I ordered it, turns out they're anchovy, olive, and guindilla skewers. Lots of salt and umami flavor, if you order this make sure you have something to cut the salt with! The roasted red pepper soup, my goodness, was one of the best bites I've had in Baltimore so far. It was just sweet enough with a slight spice to it, topped with crispy chickpeas to give a bit of texture. This should definitely stay as a menu staple. GET THIS. The primeros I tried were the pan con tomate, and pig ear stew. Pan con tomate was good, wish the bread was a bit more charred but still some great flavor in that tomato spread. The pig ear stew was also quite good. The servers were great and knowledgeable, sitting at the bar during happy hour makes you feel like you're not in Baltimore anymore, and an open view of the kitchen in the back gives another element to the restaurants setting. Five star food. Fun and lively decor. Very very casual service. Do not come to this restaurant with the expectation of a five-star dining "experience" but be prepared for food that exceeds that of many such establishments. That is not to say that the service isn't friendly and that the staff are not knowledgeable - our server was very helpful in helping us navigate the menu and in selecting an outstanding wine - but the food is delivered with haphazard timing, much like a tapas restaurant would be. The tiny plates - I don't even remember what they're called - at the beginning are fun and interesting. But, the softshell crab was by far the best softshell crab my wife and I had ever eaten and Baltimore is known for their softshell crabs. And then the lamb shoulder may have been the nicest cut of lamb (or any red meat for that matter) that we had ever had. The dessert was also delicious and all of the food was creative and exciting. We will be coming back again. Update December 27, 2016. We came back. Happy hour is one of the best deals in town. We each had two or three drinks and gorged ourselves on awesome small plates and were out of there for under 70 bucks tip included. Not bad for a $$$ restaurant. The first time I went to this restaurant I reallY enjoyed my food. At the time I would give this place a 4. Knocking 1 star off cause you have no idea a what you're ordering since the whole menu is not in English! Anywho we went here again during restaurant week and I was pretty disappointed. My lobster soup was just ok, my shrimp pasta was a little on the spicy side so much so you couldn't really enjoy the taste of the seafood in the dish. I don't think we will be going back. read more

We went there for the anniversary dinner (first time). I would say the overall experience is good, although not phenomenal. For Pintxos, we tried the famous veal tongue bocadillo and Jamon Croqutte, they both tasted good. For primeros, we got the patatas bravas and baby octopus, I love the baby octupus! The problem is that all these dishes were brought to us too fast, we just ate one piece of bread, then suddenly, the table is full! We would expect the pintxos first and then the primeros, but not all together. That's why those flavors were kind of all mixed together and the dishes looked really overwhelming on our small table. For the main dish, we got the lamb shoulder and trout, they were both good, but not really impressive. For this kind of place, I would expect more surprise in the food and a more organized way of sending dishes. Sorry, one star off! read more
