Awesome accommodating fun vibes. Wide drink selections and very cozy. The workers are super sweet. Great place for casual hangouts and parties.

    Beautiful patio out back.

I've had drinks here several times when it was The Black Boar. Wasn't too thrilled when it became Old Chalet. After I moved a new owner stepped in and now it's The Fable. A friend of mine recently came here for drinks and enjoyed it, so I figured I'd check it out. Inside is reminiscent of a dimly lit tavern. There are seats at the bar, plenty of booths for gathering with friends, a dartboard, a cozy fireplace, and classic movies on tv when sports aren't on. They also have a lovely back patio area and additional seating on the sidewalk. I sat at the bar and ordered one of their House Cocktails ($13). A dollar from each sale is donated to a local charity every month. The house cocktails have creative monikers. I selected the Town's End (Songbird floral Liqueur, St. George Vodka, Grapefruit, & lemon juice). It was refreshing and delicious! I did not expect this place to have such a creative cocktail menu (of course they serve the classics along with beer & wine too). The selections all sounded fantastic. The bartender was friendly and the vibe here is chill. The Fable also has some great deals for Happy Hour and food vendor pop ups on weekends. It's a great neighborhood bar to meet up with friends, watch some sports, or just unwind after a long day.

Comfortable patio, easy-going staff, good craft beer selection. I love the repurposed mahogany pews from a defunct church down the street.

Ask the Community - The Fable

What kind of non-alcoholic bevvies are available? Asking for a sober friend who I'd like to feel included when we go for some live music!

We've got 4 non-alcoholic beers (a Kolsch, NA Guinness, and two IPAs) and the staff is always up for making a tasty mocktail!

Silly question but do you have a billiards table?

Not a silly question! Wish we had room inside for one but we don't, sadly.

    Is there karaoke every night?

Hi Gloria! Nope, we're a neighborhood bar most nights of the week, but we do have regular karaoke every Thursday from 9pm-1:30am (except this week, we'll be closed for Thanksgiving) and rotating karaoke every Monday from 8:30pm-12:30am which…

Do you guys ever have hours where your operation is "all ages"?

Hello! We're do not. Our liquor license requires that our patrons be 21 and older during operating hours.

Is there an outdoor space? Can I bring my small dog?

There is a front patio where well-behaved dogs are always welcome. We also have a back patio and the pups can be there when it's slow and not too busy - when it gets crowded we ask that you just have them in the front space.

But...the food in the bar is definitely sub-par. I was really in the mood for the fish & chips ($25) but was very disappointed. The fish tasted doughy not at all crisp, and the fish was not fresh - had an off taste. I hadn't eaten lunch so I was really hungry & I ate it all, but not good. The fries were typical frozen out of a package & were luke warm at best. It came with cole slaw that was slimey & completely inedible - I mean AWFUL! It's a shame because the place has such character & it has a loyal following, The service is amazingly slow. I was at my table for 10 minutes before I got up & snagged a menu myself. Then, another 10 minutes before I got up again & went to the bar to order, but the barman told me that a waiter would come to my table. Many minutes later I finally ordered. My drink & my water glass were empty forever. I finally had to snag down another waiter to get another drink. I probably will come back because I love the cozy Scottish pub atmosphere, but they have a treasured gold mine here and they are squandering it for sure. No one seems to care. What a shame! It could easily be a really top notch spot. I'm giving this place 3 stars solely for the ambiance.

There's tons of ways to make veganized versions of traditional items and even if there's no meat substitute, adding vegan butter/cheese would open up a lot of options for guests. But! We had some "could have been better"…read moreexperiences during the awkward period of reopening several years ago, but since then it seems to have mostly hit its stride. Overall, our recent experiences have been solid. It's always great when an "old favorite" still feels like a good value. I miss some of the menu items like the lentil shepherd's pie, but we have very much enjoyed the hearty English breakfast. They also have a good selection of European beers on tap. Service has been friendly, but it is lightly staffed and pretty slow, so it's not a good place if you are in a hurry. They don't keep an eye on the patio, so if you sit out there, it's best to go inside and let them know. They also seem to have more rules than before - but I have to imagine these have come from experience. I don't think this is an ideal place to go with a large group. If it's a quiet night you might be able to pull tables together long-ways, but most tables seem ideal for 2-4. We come with our dog and sit on the patio when it isn't busy. The dog meals are massive (more food than ours eats in a whole day and she weighs 60 lbs). It's a good value, but beware if your dog is on a diet! Overall, my favorite thing is that genuinely feels like a pub, in that you can just come as you are and take your time without being rushed. A good fit for both locals and visitors in Pasadena.

There was a friendly play working the bar she was half affable and charming. Partway into the shift a 30s something male came to join as the bartender. He was far more interested in the arsenal game than he was of taking care of clients. It was clearly lots to do and yet he just sat and watched the game, simple things like giving me my check as soon as I was done with my food were ignored so that he could watch arsenal. Never before in my 20 years of coming to this bar, have I ever noticed server or employee of lucky Baldwin's paying more attention to the TVs then to the guests this was very offputting and this guy should not be there if this is how he usually operates very bad experience. The second you…read morewalk in you feel like you've been teleported straight to Bavaria - dark wood, old-world decor, the whole thing. It's a European vibe that you just don't find anywhere else in the city. Their beer selection is what really sets them apart. They've got an impressive rotating tap and bottle list loaded with German imports you won't see at your average bar. A few of the drafts include Spaten Lager, Bitburger Pils, and Gaffel Kölsch. If you're into beer, this is basically a pilgrimage spot. Food is good too. Generous portions, and there are even solid vegetarian options if you're not in a meat-and-beer mood. What really makes Red Lion special is the space itself, there's a cozy indoor chalet style room for when you want that intimate tavern feel, plus a huge multi level biergarten/ patio upstairs and out back for when you want to be outside under the lights with a beer in hand. It gives you options depending on the night. Always a great mix of people, good energy without being rowdy. It's the kind of place that feels like a neighborhood spot even though it transports you halfway across the world. The most we have seen so far, it was more a "business plan" let's do what Americans may think a German beer garden looks like. Our friend, the LA promoter Vahe, took us yesterday. We found a little gem, grown over the years, with an actual German owner and a service that had more than basic knowledge of German food. Nice! The ambiance was what you would expect from a place like this, less stylish-designer but more owner look-what-we-brought-from-Germany over the many years. The food was actually good, reasonably priced and generously portioned - the sauce platter really deserved its name "platter"- Came with great German curry ketchup. It would be too much to brag about the food, it was decent better than just OK version of classic beer garden dishes. But one has to be fair: where in German beer gardens you find food really worth bragging about? So while I was really tempted to stop at 4 out of five stars, I give 5. After all, it matches my most key how-to-get-5 element: would I do a 30+ min detour just to go here. If someone asked me to show them decent German cuisine in a somewhat authentic ambiance, I would take them here. The Kiez may be closer to our home, the Wirtshaus more stylish, but here we found the hearty welcome we missed elsewhere.
