I recently had the fortune of visiting La Devozione twice in a two month period so this review is a blending of those two experiences. La Devozione is one of the many restaurants located inside Chelsea Market. It is on the main level towards the middle of the building (way past the elevators and pop up market area). The restaurant is a modern looking eatery with relatively dim lighting and three different kinds of seating: 1. Bar seating (right near the entrance). 2. Communal seating (behind the bar seating, across the restaurant in a partially separated area). 3. The Oval: a special, 30 seat, open kitchen area for prix fixe meals. Both times I visited the communal area was completely packed, so I wound up sitting at the bar. There is something fun about sitting there because the staff is constantly buzzing behind the bar (serving both food and drinks) so it is not hard to get someone's attention. My only reservation are the actual seats, which are kind of odd and hard to get into but once you're in they are rather comfortable. Service is always super friendly and the staff is more than happy to answer questions about the menu. They're also great at talking about what drinks may suit your taste (or which wine may be good with your chosen pasta) so I really appreciated that. So here's a rundown of the dishes I've had: La Devozione (Spaghetti, tomato sauce, fresh basil) I like to have a "baseline" dish at most restaurants and La Devozione qualifies as that. It is a very simple spaghetti dish but don't let that fool you. The pasta has a nice bite to it and the sauce is delicious. The basil makes the dish fragrant and I really enjoyed this both times I had it. Candele Spezzate Con Ragù Napoletano (Neapolitan spare rib ragù, parmigiano) When I looked at the menu before my first visit it was this dish that caught my eye. The spare rib ragù is no joke. Wonderfully rich with a good amount of meat and with the pasta it is absolutely a treat. Savory with a wonderful chew. This is one I plan to get again and again when I visit! Mista corta patate e provola (Potatoes,stringy smoked mozzarella) I have never had a dish like this before and I absolutely loved it. To me, it tasted like an elevated mac and cheese. I know that may sound like I'm putting it down but that is actually a high compliment. It had a wonderful texture and a creaminess that I loved. The pasta and potatoes offered a nice combination of bites and I really loved it! Pastamisù (Pasta tiramisù) Tiramisù is a wonderful dessert when made well (and this one was) but add on some fried and sweetened pasta and it becomes something fun! That is what you get with this dish. At first, you think the "crackers" on top are some type of sweet cookie or something, but it turns out that's the pasta! Overall I loved both my experiences at La Devozione so far and I can't wait to go back. :) read more

Came here looking for a drink initially as all the other bars/places that offer drinks in the market were busy and didn't have seating. We sat at the bar for some drinks and the bartender was very nice. We had a few tequila shots and I really like that their drink selection was mainly from small owners and are additive free. The prices for the drinks were not bad at all. We ended up getting a pasta dish and got the Neapolitan short rib ragu and it was really good. The only thing to note is that they do not cook their noodles all the way through and is a true Al dente, according to the bartender that's how they cook it in order to digest properly. It's definitely preference on if you like it or not but I definitely thought it was undercooked at first until I asked and was educated on how they make it. Since we weren't too hungry but wanted to try this place, we ordered a Linguine Alla Colatura Di Alici Di Cetara to share, but instantly regretted it. The pasta was harder than al dente and incredibly salty. The service was good though; the staff was nice and checked up on us and even offered us bread to soak up the extra oil from the pasta. The food itself is decent, and the pasta is cooked al dente (surprisingly rare to find in the US in my opinion). but considering the $105 price point for a lunch menu, the portion sizes were remarkably small. Ultimately I left still feeling a bit hungry. I will say that the portion sizes of dishes from the a la carte menu look pretty good. We stumbled upon this place as we were walking through Chelsea Market. At first glance, the ambiance of the restaurant was appealing and it was pretty crowded inside. We ordered a pesto pasta and the spare rib ragu. I understand the pasta was supposed to be Al dente (pesto pasta was fine), but the ragu was crunchy, undercooked, and almost inedible. I was hesitant to ask the server but politely asked if they could remake the dish for me. He was very defensive when explaining it was supposed to be crunchy as the pasta was "Al dente". Reluctantly, he took back the plate and said "Would you like me to over cook it for you this time?". But we stayed and it we waited 30+mins for our food to come. Another group had sat next to us and were about to leave and the waiter catered to their every needs and got their food before us. We felt ignored and disregarded the entire time. We had to ask why our food was taking too long and for the check. I understand busy days but at least update us while we wait. We watched the waiter give something complementary to the group next to us while we just patiently waited for our check. I wish I could give this place more than 5 stars! We came here on a Friday night and sat the Oval, which is where they have their 7 course pasta tasting menu. From the moment we were seated, the staff were so friendly and attentive. Our seats at the Oval were around the kitchen which was an open kitchen so we could watch exactly how the chef was preparing the pasta and also playing it. Chef Alessio was our chef and he was so great!! When we asked him questions about how he was cooking the pastas, he would thoroughly explain it and also explain all of the ingredients. Before we started our amazing tasting menu, we were given this fried pasta that had a bit of a kick to it to cleanse our palate. We then started our 7 course pasta dishes. Make sure you come with an appetite. The portion size of the pastas weren't that large but when there are 7 courses it definitely fills you up. Each course was just so perfect in both taste and the presentation. At the end there were two deserts, both were delicious! They do cater to vegetarians, which was awesome! They change their menu seasonally so I can't wait to try this again in the fall/winter. Highly recommend this! I would say one of the best Italian places in the city! read more

I asked for a wine recommendation and the bartender recommended Sciumma Aglianico del Vulture (Italian red). This was one of the best wines I have tried in a long time. The La Devozione (classic spaghetti) use real tomatoes for the dishes and the basil was fresh! This is a savory dish but simple. The spaghetti noodles were perfect "Al Dente" just the way it should be! The Candele Spezzate con Tagu Napoletano (spare rib ragu) was very filling and tasty! Such a great combination. When I ordered a Coke, Juan poured the Coke like an expensive bottle of wine; and when I asked to keep the small souvenir bottle, he wrapped it carefully in bubble wrap before placing into their strong plastic bag. Giving the most objective review from my personal experience. Restaurant itself was very pleasant and the ambience was also great. The open kitchens and fresh pasta was very unique and cool to look at. Our waitress was stellar. The complimentary bread was the star of the meal, along with their freshly squeezed OJ. That being said, I can confidently say I had the most Al-dente pasta in all of the New York Area. I've never had pasta that was quite frankly hard to pierce with a fork - that was a first. It was like cardboard; I love my pasta Al dente but this was next level. Cool experience, but not sure why my pasta was so incredibly Al dente. This is a great new addition to the Chelsea market! We came in for lunch and were seated right away as the restaurant area was not very busy. This place is both a shop and a restaurant, I was impressed with how detailed the displays were and the great selection of kitchenware available for purchase. I ordered the ragu sauce pasta, the pasta was cooked perfectly al dente and the beef was extremely tender. I also tried the spaghetti with pork cheek sauce but liked the ragu better. I have never written a bad review in my life. However, I feel obligated to share what was genuinely the WORST meal of my life. If I could rate this restaurant less than a one star then I would. My friend and I had ordered the 4 course sampling menu and were extremely disappointed with every single course. Every single pasta was cooked "Al dente" but in reality raw and unpleasantly chewy. I know it's a sampling but the portion sizes were CRIMINALLY small for the price. The "appetizer" was a long breadstick that tasted like a cracker and airplane snack. The next appetizer was a single fried pasta shell with an oyster and lemon foam in it. It genuinely makes me gag thinking about it. The first course was a seafood spaghetti that's sauce was not bad The second course was inedible after the first bite. Barely-cooked spaghetti with a green onion puree and fried canned tuna on top. It was, for lack of better words, horrid. It was as if you took a bite of the smell of a fish market. The third course was, once again, barely-cooked pasta in a rabbit ragu with fried olive flakes on top. I'm not an olive person and thought that was why I didn't enjoy it but my friend who was an avid olive lover could not stand it. The fourth course was a regular tomato sauce that wasn't bad nor special but once again the pasta itself had been like flash boiled and it was gross. To finish the meal, we were served a dessert that was basically the lemon foam from the appetizer on top of grapefruit. All of these horrid dishes and one drink cost us $400 total. Absolute scam. We decided to put reservations in and. without reading very carefully, chose the next earliest reservation at the Oval table. Little did we know that this was a tasting table with the chef. Although the price point for a 7 course tasting actually wasn't that bad (~$125), we mentally weren't prepared and we explained to the hostess our mistake. She and the rest of the staff were amazing-- so friendly and accommodating and didn't make us feel silly for our misunderstanding. Once we were re-seated, they al continued to be super nice to us and made us feel at ease with our questions about the menu. As for the food, all I can see is.. delizioso! For a cocktail; I ordered one of their spring specials and our was the perfect drink for a warm evening- citrusy, not overwhelmingly floral and really smooth. The ziti, which the waitress's recommended, lived up to her recommendation and would definitely order it again. I was really in the mood for some cacio e pepe and I was happy that this location had some on the menu. There were two versions: take out and a menu version which was more expensive (and from what I was told a bigger portion). Since it was late afternoon on a Sunday most places in Chelsea market were closing so I asked if there would still be seating available and the hostess said yes but gave us a community table spot. I wanted to set at the bar but the hostess went to the back for about 5 minutes and there was no one to help so I was just awkwardly standing there. Sitting at the bar I noticed the chairs were slightly uncomfortable (also hard to move in and out) and there was no one at the bar yet we were places at the one place were it was wet and no one offered to wipe it down. The bartender took our order and I was just simply asking if one dish was better than the cacio e Pepe just to get his opinion and I was told they were not comparable which gave me absolutely no insight on how I should order which was quite unhelpful. I didn't know that the pasta would be al dente and that sort of detracted from the experience but the taste of the pasta was top tier which is the only reason that this review gets 3 stars. I would only return for take out given this experience, as far as recommendations: I would say there are definitely other (better) restaurants that serve cacio e pepe with better service. read more

Disclaimer: this review is only for their to-go vermicelli cacio e pepe. I sat down and opened the takeout container probably less than 10 minutes after it was handed to me. I'm fairly certain I received spaghetti instead of vermicelli, but that's neither here nor there. Just thought I'd mention it. At first I was extremely underwhelmed because the pasta seemed too raw (not yet al dente) and the sauce was very watery, but like magic the spaghetti got better over time. In 15 minutes or so it absorbed more of the pasta water and softened up, and the sauce turned creamy and smooth. It was like the chef had the foresight to take carryover cooking into account when making my order. Very thoughtful! Also it was neat to watch him in action. The cacio e pepe was *very* rich and I'm not sure I'd order it again. But I'll definitely be back to try their signature La Devozione (tomato and basil). read more

La devozione is a fine dining pasta experience that you won't regret going to. I spent a while debating whether to give it 4 or 5 stars but ended up going with 4 because at this price point, I'd expect perfection. Food 4/5: La devozione gives you a multi-course pasta meal all served al-dente. My favorite dish was the pasta with smoked mozzarella, yellow tomato sauce, and basil oil, which I thought was one of the best pastas I've had in NYC. The other dishes were generally good (the beet pasta was my next favorite) except for 1 pasta (the rosemary one) which was served a bit undercooked. Service and ambience 5/5: We sat at the circle pasta bar where you can see the chefs cook food. The chefs are quite social and I think these are the best seats in the house to sit in. Stopped by Chelsea Market to grab a quick bite. This place caught my eye because the entrance had a sign that said 'Spaghetti To-Go'. Even though I'd technically just eaten (Los Tacos No. 1), I couldn't resist stopping in to check out the menu. In addition to the restaurant (which looks really nice inside), they offer a short menu of to-go pastas at the counter. I decided to get their namesake La Devozione, which is basically a spaghetti pomodoro to take home with me. It was made on the spot and took about 10 minutes. The container is a good size and sturdy. I ended up having some when I got home. The pasta was still al dente which was great, and the tomato and basil were mixed in well. Overall delicious, nice vibrant flavors and more than I expected from a to-go spaghetti. Tasted even better the next day. I wasn't expecting the soggy bit of bread at the bottom of the box (which is actually intentional), but it had soaked up the sauce and added a nice bit of flavor and texture at the end.
