I wanted to give this place a 3 star rating because it is just not clean, but I cant because the food is just that good. This place is old, and it may truly belong on diners drive in and dives, b/c it is a dive... that said the bathrooms were dirty, and I can see why another customer wrote about their stories the way they did... that said, the kitchen is clean, and so is the restaurant... you can see into the kitchen, and it is run what looks to me to be by a family of Hispanic decent... and their specialty is what they call a burrito, but is more like a HUGE taco. The burrito flour tortilla is made from scratch and is fluffy and delicious. The cost of the largest burrito on the menu is $3.75 and is a meal almost for 2. You can make your own burrito, and the ingredients actually taste good. Their bacon is very nice and smoked, the chorizo was flavorful and the eggs were good. The food was so good that if the place was clean and nice, it would easily be 5 star. The total bill for 3 was $21 My wife had a chicken soup that she said was authentic to Mexico, and her sister had a standard American Scrambled Eggs and Bacon breakfast. All in all this place is a find... and if it ever makes the TV show you would never be able to get into this place... it is just that good. read more

You could call me a regular at La Estacion. It is definitely a must whenever I am on the island. If you go to La Estacion for brunch, the surprise is what everyone should order. It is a HUGE breakfast burrito with eggs, bacon, cheese, and potatoes. They always have great iced tea and coffee. More favorites include their chicken soup and the Mexican Dinner. This place makes me giddy to even think about. The Mexican food is debatably the best you'll find on the island. Their breakfast burritos are massive and packed full of flavor. The surprise burrito has thick cut bacon, eggs, refried beans flavored with pig lard, fried potatoes, and cheese all wrapped up in a homemade tortilla. The only way you can say no to that is if you are on weight watchers. It's so good. The atmosphere is lacking, but that in itself is what makes this place special. It's centered around good mexican food. The waitresses usually have novellas on the tv and are munching on food behind the bar in between serving customers. Is it sanitary? No. Would I deal with that at any other restaurant? No. But I will here because I always feel comfortable like I am at someone's home. We had business downtown on a Monday morning and decided to add breakfast to our schedule rather than having the old boring cereal at home. La Estacion was hopping! Lots of folks there, including an EMS table (I felt quite safe!) and another of politicos. It's apparently the place to be. In my opinion a test of any establishment offering breakfast is the quality of the coffee. I am pleased to report that La Estacion offers a full-bodied and tasty beverage, none of that watery stuff. Woke me right up. I usually order Migas, but I let my dining companion have that honor. They were a fine traditional mix of eggs, tortilla strips and cheese, and were pronounced delicious. I went for the Huevos a la Mexicana, which included scrambled eggs, Mexican sausage, potatoes, onion, and tomatoes. This dish was also excellent. Servings were generous. Both dishes came with several slices of thick, lean, crispy bacon, semi-refried beans, and very tasty fried potatoes. Homemade flour tortillas came with each order. The dishes were not overly picante; we both added the salsa which was fresh and well-flavored, but not very spicy. If you like heat you'll need to request it. Of course being a coward the taste was perfect for me. I suspect that lunch is just as good as breakfast. I think I'll plan some business downtown around the noon hour next time. The torta. Get the torta. Specifically the barbacoa torta w/ avocado, onion, & tomato ($4), which is only available on Saturdays and Sundays. That's all you really need to know. It's not bursting at the seams, not drowned in a "special sauce", nor is it super fancy. But it is so good... Like so good. One bite and I knew, it was over. This is what I wanted to eat. Simple. Delicious. Savory, moist barbacoa on a buttery bun topped w/ the bare minimum of rich avocado, crunchy white onion and acidic tomato. When I come back I'm going to have to fight myself in order to try something different. Walking back from the seawall, ran into this hidden gem. By far the best breakfast burrito we have ever had. Finished mine, and even though I was full, they were so delicious I had to get a second. This place is family owned and operated, so the service is second to none. The family is hugely passionate about their restaurant and make sure you feel at home. The price is unbelievably reasonable just to add icing on the cake. Definitely a place to check out while visiting Galveston. We only have two days in Galveston, but will certainly return. read more

The place is mom-and-pop shop... Well, more like mom, pop, daughter, aunt, etc etc. haha. The whole family seems to be working there and they are SO sweet. If you want some good food that will fill up your belly (for sure) and warm your soul, this is definitely worth hitting up. Their homemade tortillas are absolutely the best. I have to say that these flour tortillas definitely rank on my top 3 best tortillas. The barbacoa is only a Saturday/Sunday special. GET IT. It's so delicious. It's fatty, tender, and just a field trip for your tastebuds. That and the surprise burrito was absolutely delicious. And at a great price for the food! Understandably a local favorite, Estacion delivered two great dishes for us on Easter morning. I had the migas with bacon a la mexicana. Perfectly crispy tortilla strips mixed with well done eggs, peppers and onions. Tortillas were thin and tasty, frijoles were nice but not outstanding. The salsa was fresh with just the right amount of kick. My fiancée had the huevos con chorizo with cheese. She won. Delicious chorizo, without the greasy leftovers all too typical of lesser places. Again, perfect eggs. My only compliant was the potatoes/home fries. They came out a bit limp, next time I'll ask for extra crispy. Great little place that announces "Gloria's back!" in the window... Not sure what is was like when she wasn't there, but she did a great job today. read more

The portions are great and the price is super cheap. I usually get the burrito that comes with everything minus the potatoes, and gobble it up. FYI: The burrito is HUGE and packed with yummy ingredients (eggs, bacon, sausage, etc).The food is fresh and very delicious! Some people may not like its outer and inner appearance, but I think its great. It's exterior looks "interesting", however I feel like it somehow adds some character to the building. The interior is not amazing either, but again, character. I always enjoy surprises and especially when it withholds to the famous saying, "Don't judge a book by it's cover." Anyway, back to the food! I have always gotten their burritos. My husband and I usually go in the mornings, if we have woken up in time. Their chips and salsa are very good too and have great flavor. The lunch I would say was about middle of the road, I had enchiladas suiza they where decent. I didn't enjoy my queso if was a tad watery, overall an average experience but I would come back to try the breakfast. If you do decide to go it is easy to pass up so keep your eyes open. read more

I had the Surprise breakfast burrito the morning after a long day of travelling. Bacon, eggs, cheese, beans, all wrapped up in a very thick tortilla. The tortilla had a strong, fresh flavor, and the beans weren't overpowering (see my El Chilito, Austin, TX review...). It was presented taco-style, with a cup of salsa. Prices here are great, nothing seemed to be over $7.50 and you could get out of there well breakfasted for under $5, including tip. The service was great, the waitress called me "sweetie" - I'm not from the South, so I guess I'm gonna get used to it while traveling, but it was a nice introduction to the region. The atmosphere is clean and friendly, but old-timey at the same time. It seemed like there were plenty of regulars. My only quibble would be with the salsa. It's not terribly chunky or spicy, just your garden-variety tomato paste in the blender with onions and jalapenos. But I'm picky when it comes to salsa - you may love it. read more

I went here looking for breakfast tacos after another place that was recommended was closed. They didn't have breakfast tacos but their giant breakfast burritos were pretty incredible. They range from $2.95 to $4.00 and are about a half pound so they don't skimp. Good variety of burrito combinations but my favorite is the Burrito Surprise (potato, egg, cheese, bean and bacon). I've been here a few times before, but long before I did Yelp. Yes, I'm a believer; very good breakfast. I had the potatoes and eggs, which if there weren't 3 eggs then there had to be 4, and very delicately scrambled. I wasn't expecting a couple of pieces of bacon either, plus some refried beans that had a lighter composition than what you normally get. The wait staff were very friendly, and despite the number of patrons, were always on hand to ask if everything was ok. This isn't a corporation/franchise, and they're not exactly in the tourist trap area, so they have to work a little harder even if the décor is a little funky. I could see in their refrigerator also that they were using the Kroger orange juice which is sucrose city; an upgrade would benefit them in the future. Ugh. So nasty. I hate when people don't take any pride in their work and just do the least amount possible. I usually always eat my breakfast burritos at Los Compas on 45th (incomparable, so good! ) but I foolishly decided to try La Estacion for a change since it gets pretty good reviews: what a mistake omg. It was Sunday morning around 8am, 3 waitresses, 3 other tables occupied. The place actually does have old school, no gimmicks Mexican ambiance. I love gritty, real, non touristy places like that usually. It could be so good but instead it's crap! What a disappointment. I counted 4 dirty empty tables that remained dirty until just before I left, lots of flies buzzing around the leftovers & plates. Nobody said hello or good morning to me. No smiles. No personality. Hmm. I ordered the Suprise burrito and saw there was link sausage as an extra on the menu. When I asked for that the waitress said, "it's patties. No links!" I much prefer actual sausages (which you can get at Los Compas btw. Nice breakfast sausage!) So that was too bad. Anyway they brought me my coffee in a dirty cup smeared with pink lipstick. Yuck. No apology, very bored indifferent service, "whatever" kind of attitude. Why do people give businesses like this their hard earned money? I don't get it. You can cook your breakfast at home and enjoy it more. My burrito came with no silverware. The waitress didn't bother to check if I had any so I had to call her back to ask for it... I also had to ask for salsa, and sugar for my coffee. You know, the bare basics. The waitresses were strolling around slowly with no care for any level of service whatsoever. The burrito was sloppy looking, sloppy tasting, mushy; the sausage patties tough and gristly, the salsa astonishingly watery, tasteless and bland. The place was filthy and the flies everywhere were repulsive. I took two bites and my stomach turned. I couldn't eat any more of that pig swill. I am a regular for breakfast at La Estacion. The staff is very friendly and always acknowledges my presence. You can't go wrong with the Suprise Burrito, which I think is $3.50. Also the Barbacoa on the weekends is great. The coffee is mediocre, as it is Folgers, but for a $5.00 breakfast, who can complain about the coffee?
