This was my 2nd time here and this time I brought the family. After a long, hot day at the H.O.T. Air Show, we were sunburned, very thirsty and wanted some good Tex Mex. It was about 5:30 on Saturday evening, not terribly crowded, we were seated immediately at a booth for 6. There was a large party in the front with a bunch of loud women. As the laughter became louder, the staff closed the big garage doors (thankfully). The first couple of baskets seemed to be the bottom of the chip bin, nothing but small, broken chips. After requesting more chips, we did get some regular size chips. It took a little while to get our waters refilled. I enjoy other establishments where some servers strictly just walk around and refill drinks, chips and salsa. The salsa is tasty, not too spicy or chunky. The queso is great! The sour cream chicken enchiladas are my favorite (the only thing I have had). I don't eat beans, but the rice is very good. Our table also ordered the chimichanga and the chicken quesadilla, both got a thumbs up. Over the years as we have traveled through Waco, we have frequently stopped for Tex Mex at two other well known named restaurants. La Fiesta will be our go to from now on. A small detour off of the highway (IH35), but worth the extra few minutes. read more

I never leave bad reviews because understand that sometimes things don't go as planned but this place straight blew me off and that is not ok. I didn't dine in their restaurant. This review is entirely based on their catering department. I actually hope the experience when dining in is a million times better than what I have experienced trying to get them to cater my event. I really wanted to go with a local Restaurant instead of a chain or catering company. I know restaurants are having a hard time due to Covid and I wanted to support a restaurant that had amazing reviews and was recommended to us from our venue. Trying to plan an event with them was like pulling teeth. Nobody ever responded to my emails in a timely manner if at all. I called daily and couldn't get anyone to return my messages and when someone finally did call back all I got were excuses about why they weren't returning my calls and a promise to fix things which never happened. It sucks because I was really looking forward to trying this place. Unfortunately, their lack of professionalism while trying to plan my event has cost them a job. I would not recommend them for catering if you want a professional team eager to help you plan your event. I'm beyond disappointed. read more

This has always been one of our favorite restaurants, but something has gone terribly wrong. The food was so dry, that it was all I could do to choke it down. Went by last night just to pick up an order of queso and tortillas, imagine my suprise when my bill came to 15.50. According to the website queso is 7.99 I got charged 11.50 for queso?? That is ridiculous, not to mention false advertising. Their to go menu also says 1.35 for 1/2 dozen corn tortillas and 1.60 for 1/2 dozen flour, funny I got charged 3.00 for 3 corn and 3 flour. I have eaten at La Fiesta for close to 40 years, but I don't think I will ever go back. read more

Ate here today with a friend and the only thing that was enjoyable was the chips and salsa, we ordered Queso brisket enchiladas and the enchiladas a la fiesta and they both were horrible.. the 2 frozen pink lemonades weren't even frozen. And for the enchiladas a la fiesta the beef was tough and looked like it was burnt. We frequent La Fiesta on a regular basis and have been pleased with the food, service, and portions. Their chicken fajitas are tender and tasty, but they are over priced if you order for two. We got about the same amount on an order for two as you would get in a single order. We talked to our waiter about this. He went and talked to the manager. The response delivered by our waiter was they would stay on the cooks to make sure there is a healthy portion on each order. I would have expected the manager to at least come to our table to speak to us about the issue. Makes me question whether I'll go back. read more

Came up to Waco from Houston for a few days just to try someplace new and researched this place well ahead of time. We were not disappointed. Everything was so delicious and fresh tasting. The shrimp bruschette my wife had were really fresh and tasty. I had a combination plate of enchiladas, taco and tamale. I was very happy with all of it but especially the chicken taco, it was loaded and well seasoned and filling. The tamale had a very good taste to it, not bland at all. We also had an appetizer of the guac and queso dip. Great! Their house salsa was really good too. Their menu was so big, we had a hard time deciding but was not disappointed. The only glitches was it was so hot outside and our table was located next to a door leading to the outside patio that kept opening and closing making it a little uncomfortable. Also they forgot our appetizer and brought it after they served our meals which was OK as I just ate it alongside everything else. I have no idea why my friends loved this place so much while we were in Waco. It's just cheese and grease. Now I am a man who likes both of these things, but I've never really came out of here thinking "I'm glad we ate there". Perhaps I never found the right entree, I stopped going after being disappointed a few times. Also, unlike some other places, they don't really have good drinks to fall back on. Great margaritas and True from scratch fresh Tex Mex food made only with the best quality ingredients cutting no corners making things the old fashioned way, the same way they have been since opening over a half a century ago. I don't know of another restaurant around waco, Mclennan county, central Texas, and beyond that can say has been open as long and never sold, owned by the same people. La Fiesta has been open since 1963 and the family has had restaurants in Waco since the 1920's, almost 100 years in the restaurant business. Places that aren't good don't last that long, it doesn't happen ever, period. The restaurant business is tough, Only the GREAT ones endure. read more

It's been nearly a year since I visited la fiesta. The bar has been remodeled, nothing special. Sat at the bar for 8-10 minutes before I saw a person in the restaurant that worked there. It has happy hour, and margarita time. I asked how much the frozen house margs were. The bar tender said they were $9.95 and up. I verified again we were talking a house margarita. They said yes. I had a 12 oz beer that was way overpriced instead. Many great margaritas in other places for a third of the price. I guess they are trying to pay for the remodel in a month. I won't be coming back. This may be the best Tex-Mex I've had in Waco. The Castillo family started out downtown in the 1920s and opened La Fiesta in 1963. The menu is as rich as the tradition. It's extensive without venturing too far from the items you know and love. I liked that they had street tacos, elotes, and tableside guacamole. The mesquite-grilled fajitas, which include carnitas and shrimp, are great, and they put them in a number of things, as in the stellar "enchiladas a la Fiesta" and cheesy "fajita fundido." The menu highlights that the recipes are tried and true and that they don't cut corners. It even gives a little explanation of "Tex-Mex" as a genre.The margarita was good but a bit sweet. The chili con queso, for which there was a Yelp coupon, and salsa probably aren't award winning, but we enjoyed them. This is probably the worst garbage called Mexican food I've ever seen on a plate. This place charges almost double the other (better) places. The salsa tastes like it was nothing more than a can of tomatoes. Where's the cilantro? Cumin? Garlic? Jalapeños? I paid $13 dollars for a quesodilla. It was nothing more than a flat chimichanga. Their pico de guio was seriously pickled bell peppers. The avacado served on the "taco" was very unripe to the point of inedibility and the rice was still cold in the middle.
