I opened up the beans and it smelled a little funny so I took the spoon and stirred it and it was filled with maggots. Eww. I called them and nicely explained to the owner what I found. he didn't offer to send someone to pick it up or any kind of money off. he asked me if I wanted a replacement. the owner said that it was good and safe to eat. i was disgusted. L has been coming here for decades and still is willing to drive an hour to get a heap of food here from time to time when we make our way down to that side of brooklyn. The restaurant is small and a hole in the wall so you may have a wait if you have a large party unless you go around the slightly off hours. The food is addicting and there is normally so much that we always have to pack the rest of it. They give you a large platter of rice (a mountain of rice) with a side bowl of beans and sauce to smother your rice in. We always order the steak and peppers since it's our favorite and a side of platanos fritos. Traditional Puerto Rican fare like mofongo, pasteles, rice w/green pigeon peas ("gandules"), octopus salad, roast pork ("pernil"), "tres leches" cake--they got it ALL, fresh, DELICIOUS and nicely priced. Even seasonal stuff like 'morcillas' (blood sausage)! Good mofongo (boiled plantains) is hard to find: ask for it w/ shrimp or pernil (roast pork) inside--huge portion is GREAT! Service at restaurant is always clean, friendly and punctual--delivery is fast and convenient as well. They cater with a huge selection of dishes. Seriously--that menu is HUGE! Caribbean food is not spicy--if you feel like something different, Flor del Paraiso is worth a try. Take the L or M to Myrtle Wyckoff or Halsey. I've also been going here for over a decade (since the old El Cibao on wyckoff & myrtle closed ages ago) and this is definitely my Go-To place for dinner when I don't feel like cooking. Their chuletas are always on point & their arroz con gandules is not seedy & not mushy (perfect balance). Their baked chicken & pernil (roast pork) are always baked & seasoned to tasty perfection. I recently took a friend here and she raved about the mofongo (fried plantain thing that I refuse from my own relatives). Their portions can feed a whole family & are very reasonably priced. However, sometimes their tostones (fried plantain chip things) are soggy & that disappoints me.They have jugos naturales (natural juices of tamarind, passion fruit, guava, etc.) there, and be careful; because those are seasonal, they can go either way. The decor is Dominican Grease-spoon Contemporary, complete with a Bachata loaded jukebox, so I don't recommend this place for a date night. They used to be so much better. I went in today with my mother to get dinner to take home. We ordered rotisserie chicken, sweet plantains, and steak. The steak seems ok, the sweet plantains are gross.. totally soggy with oil, burned, and the oil seeping out of it has an awful brown color. The chicken seems to be PEPPER chicken because that is about the only flavor in it. It had been a few years since I have eaten there and now I definitely will not go back. The other Spanish restaurants on myrtle are a million times better. For the record, I am Hispanic and I would like to reiterate once again.. the food is awful. For the most part, the food here is good and you get a good portion. The prices are very reasonable. I guess depending on who is the cook at the time of your order, the food can be a little salty. I like the Family Combos (our favorite is #3. - Rice, Beans, Salad, Chicken Fingers and Soda). I like to call or go in if I'm nearby, and order it and then come back to get it. It takes a long time to get your food if you order for delivery because they get alot of phone orders. I don't like that the little pieces of buttered bread is usually stale and many times the salad is watery, limp, and or tomatoes are hard and not ripe. The rest if the food is good. If I can give it a zero I would. Seriously service is horrendous among the ladies of the establishment. I ordered two whole rotisserie chicken las weekend for 16 dollars. It costed 8 dollars each. Today I went in to it it again and they are telling me that it cost 9 dollars each. Of course I don't have enough cash on me and hence was planning to use my card. Then they tell me they are going to charge interest. I saw the sign that says 20 dollars for credit and 10 dollars for debt, that implies it accept credit or debt right? Why didn't it also stated that it will charge interest. The lady was giving me a hard time. Then she got the nerve to argue with me about the price. Seriously, it was not my fault that the person charged me last week. I remember because I wonder why it was cheaper then it advertised.
