I ran into this spot by accident and I'm so glad I did. The people were so kind and ready to serve excellence. This was by far the best carne guisada that I've had in Houston! There's nothing like abuela's home-cooking... Oh wait. I don't have an abuela. Or at least I didn't until I found La Fonda. No, not LaFawnduh from Napoleon Dynamite. LA FONDA, the best place for Mexican (and some South American) home-cooked meals. We aren't talking Tex Mex. They're dishing up slow-cooked classics like carne guisada, pollo chile verde, and stupid good barbacoa, all caferia-style. Their tortillas aren't the best, so I usually opt for white rice and black beans. Their pupusas (served daily) are also some of the best on this side of town. And don't forget to wash it all down with one of their endless drink options. Seriously, they have two drink fridges, a soda fountain, and scratch-made agua fresca. The woman behind the counter is seriously one of the sweetest ladies, and we've secretly claimed her as our unspoken abuela. Can't wait to visit our La Fonda abuela and try all of their other offerings, like the tamales, tortas, or bandeja paisa. read more

The food at this place is excellent. It's is your mother's Mexican home cooking. If you want to eat Mexican food that goes beyond tacos and tortas, this is a good place to visit. We ordered chiles rellenos and calabaza rellena (stuffed squash). Both were super delicious. It's also a place you can have a quick lunch as it's counter service, which I like during the workday. The only negative is that it's a bit expensive. It was about $20-$25 per person. The portions are generous and the quality of the ingredients is good though. read more

Love that there's an authentic Mexican restaurant in the Sugar Land area. Pretty good food. I kind of customized mine by asking for a chorizo egg scramble with refried bean and ranchero sauce on the side. The ranchero sauce has a little kick to it so does the green sauce for those that like it a little spicy. They have cafeteria style food as well for lunch. They also have a pictures of various plates on the wall but with no words or prices hence I knocked off a star. I would definitely come back here and get their other plates but I would have to ask them what's in it and how much. read more

If I could eat here every day, I would. Having an authentic Mexican restaurant in the suburb is a blessing. Truly. We usually order their breakfast tacos and breakfast burrito (sausage, bacon, egg) served with ranchero potatoes and refried beans on the side. Those 2 sides right there are amazing. I do not always eat refried beans, but when I do, this is where I get it from! Not to mention everything tastes like homemade including the tortillas. My other ultimate favorite dish is the chicken and potatoes stew (pollo guisado) with Mexican rice. It's such a comfort food. If I had a Mexican mom, that is the dish I would love to have her make for me. And don't get me started with the pupusas. They're ridiculously delicious, especially if accompanied with the coleslaw side and green sauce. Don't forget to ask for the green sauce! read more

My coworkers often praise La Fonda, but I never really tried except for a breakfast taco my coworker recently got one for me to try. Today, I decided to visit for some breakfast tacos. I got the Mexican eggs and one not on the menu, just egg and cheese. The Mexican eggs tacos was really good, but the egg and cheese one was just so-so. I think the tortillas are just so-so but the fillings are flavorful/tasty. The green sauce absolutely makes the tacos better than average. I will definitely get more breakfast tacos here in the future. The restaurant itself kinda looks like a cafeteria type, but the ladies seems really sweet. Ranchero Plate! I added some barbacoa to it and made it completely blissful. If you live in this area and like Mexican food your a fool if you haven't stopped in to this hidden gem. THIS PLACE IS AWESOME! From the moment I walked in, I knew that I had chosen the right place for lunch. I was greeted with a very warm welcome. The ladies who own the restaurant are great. They walked me through the menu and helped me decide what to order. I got the taco plate. One el pastor and one beef fajita. I also got Mexican rice and black beans on the side. All for $7.99. The tacos were so good that I had to pause after the first bite and thank the Lord!! The meat was seasoned perfectly, and the tortillas were so soft! Authentic, home cooked Mexican food! I couldn't pass up the fresh horchata. One of the best I've had...EVER! You can enjoy outdoor seating (if it's not 300 degrees outside), and the restrooms are kept in good condition. I came for lunch with a friend, we both got the stuffed chicken, rice, and empanadas. The chicken was stuffed with veggies and cheese. It also had this cream sauce on it which was delicious to eat with the rice. They had two types of rice, white or orange/reddish colored and two types of refried beans, black and pinto. We both had the white rice and it was good....we skipped the beans. I noticed the menu had some Salvadoran dishes which surprised me because you hardly see this in the area. Of course I had to try their empanadas (plantain stuffed with a custard type filling, fried and sprinkled with sugar)! They were patient with me as I tried to decide what to eat. They have a nice variety including lamb! Which I was tempted to order but did not. I ordered a taco plate on corn tortillas. I ordered one el pastor and one chicken and onions. Delicious. I ate every bite including the rice and beans and I wasn't that hungry. I have been coming to this place for a few months now and it just keeps getting better! Their homemade tortillas are the best and their salsas compliment any plate or tacos you get. Who doesn't love a great salsa with their tacos. You pay for quality food; they live up to their name of "Authentic Mexican Food." I recommend their breakfast tacos (Personally I love their bacon and egg) or their beef fajita quesadillas for lunch with rice and beans. Holy smokes. What a gem this place is. I walked in around 3:20 today with a HUGE order, not realizing that they close at 4:00. The man behind the counter couldn't have been more friendly and helpful, even given my late arrival. Everything I ordered was delicous. That would be fajita nachos, barbacoa tacos, fajita tacos, tacos al carbon, chicken tacos, carne asada quesadillas, platanos fritos, rice and beans, and all the salsas and extra large pico de gallo. The five of us couldn't decide on one stand-out favorite (with the exception of the refried beans -- we all agreed that we could eat our weight in those). The only slightly negative thing I can think of is that the plantains were a bit greasy and sliced thinly, rather than pounded, but that might just be personal preference. The wonderful man behind the counter even offered to help bring it to my car. Will definitely be back. Looking forward to experiencing the breakfast menu!! read more

There is plenty of seating overall, but this place is consistently busy, especially during weekend brunch. Given Houston's often extreme weather, I definitely prefer sitting indoors when possible. I almost always order the sausage and eggs over a bed of sweet potato tater tots. They are absolutely delicious! Not many restaurants serve sweet potato tater tots, so whenever I'm craving them, this is one of my go-to spots. Because of my food allergies, I asked for a side of maple syrup instead of their house sauces, and it paired surprisingly well with the tots. While their gluten free and dairy free options are somewhat limited, I was able to modify my meal by omitting the cheese. The hostess was friendly and welcoming, but the waitstaff seemed overwhelmed by how busy the restaurant was. As a result, service wasn't particularly attentive. If you visit during peak brunch hours, I would recommend coming with the expectation that the food is the highlight, while the service may be a bit slower due to the crowds.

To ensure I wasn't loosing my sanity, I weighed it only to find out it weighed 12 oz in the container & LESS than 12 oz out of the container. Returning to the restaurant and informing the staff, they immediately pushed back and indicated the container was a 16oz container. I indicated to them I had weighed it at home and it was in fact less than 12 oz - causing the cashier and another staff member to looked shocked that I confirmed it was less than 12 oz. The cashier then responded " a pound is 12 oz." and I corrected her and said it was in fact 16 oz. The owner than proceeded to come and again, indicated it was an 16oz container and I once again informed him that I had weighed it at home & the contents themselves were less than 12 oz. He proceeded to talk to his staff in the back & took our container into the kitchen, and weighed it himself & then proceeded to resolve the issue. He then indicated that his staff is "eyeballing it and not using the scale" & that I was looking at him " as if I cheated you". Needless to say - I will NOT be returning to this establishment. Not only was my concern given push back multiple times, including the owner, but the lame excuse of having a scale & NOT USING IT, staff incorrectly stating a 1lb was 12 oz , and the comment from the owner was highly unprofessional. A message to the owner : 1. Please educate your staff how much a pound is. If I am going to be corrected matter of factly, it better be a correct statement. Also, rather than immediately be corrected, they should hear our customers concerns and check themselves on the issue to ensure they are aware of the situation BEFORE pushing back or offering a resolution. 2. If you have a scale - Use it. This was a sloppy mistake & an even sloppier excuse for the discrepancy. 3. Take ownership for your mistake instead of redirecting it to your customers. I didn't look at you "as if" you cheated me, I looked at you because YOU did cheat me, intentionally or unintentionally, and then gave me a sloppy excuse. If you have a scale, EVERY single package should be weighed before it is served, even IF the container itself is marked 16 oz, that doesn't automatically mean the contents are equal to that upon filling it. I am very disappointed that this was the service I received & deeply offended by the sloppy excuses provided for a product I already paid for. Further, it is deeply offensive to customers to have a sloppy operational process and then try to make them seem like the bad person in this situation when they in fact aren't getting what they already paid for. This was shady business practice & you should feel shameful for treating your community like this.
