I've wanted to come here for a while now, and finally made dinner plans with a friend for a Sunday night. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive and gave us plenty of time to talk. I ordered the Cesar salad with chicken, and it was fresh and the chicken was perfectly cooked. My friend ordered the short rib and felt it was pretty dry. However, the drinks were the real highlight. I had a very good experience the first time I came to this restaurant but I brought my friend here this time and we were disappointed. The meat I ordered was overcooked and dried up like it had been sitting in the kitchen too long before they served it. My friend wasn't too happy about her salad. The cocktail I ordered was unremarkable too. I did like my appetizer and dessert. The place was getting noisy but manageable. We loved the art in the place. The bill for the two of us was over $150.00 and we felt it was unreasonable for what we got. I don't think we will be coming back unfortunately but I hope they will improve their food quality. read more

My friends and I always have an amazing experience here! We are here at least 2 times a week. The service from Daniel and Lela is always friendly and attentive. Recommendations are helpful and on point. The chefs, Ray and Gabriel are great and always check on us and make sure all food is perfect--which it is! The drinks are so good here! The cocktails are crafted perfectly and they have a strong wine selection too. I recommend coming during their happy hour and trying the specials. We enjoy the ambiance here. This is definitely one of the most slept on restaurants in San Antonio. Excellent French bistro style dishes and still affordable. Sadly they do not do brunch anymore, but offer a perfect early dinner. If you are looking for girl dinner they have happy hour truffle fries and Caesar salad. Different specials rotate like a poached salmon or braised short rib. They always have a nice seasonal salad recently beets and goat cheese. Julia's is a gem in the Beacon Hill community. Daniel, our server, was super friendly, knowledgeable about wine and really set the tone for an enjoyable, relaxed experience. They had good prices for drinks, beer, wine. parking is okay, but limited spaces out front. some outside tables and seats outside. got the chicken palenta, which was pretty tasty but also oily. oysters as an appetizer were tasty but also oily. bread with the oysters was good. it was pretty hot inside though. that was my one main concern. for a summer day, wish they had turn on the air conditioner. not sure if it is always like this., but i saw other people were fanning themselves and sweating. read more

Heard so many great things about this restaurants and was excited to try it out. However, it was disappointing in several ways. First off, it was incredibly warm in the restaurants in the middle of July, and I was sweating the entire time. Appears that they don't really turn on the AC, or if they do, it does not circulate well. Very discomforting especially for the middle of summer. The food was also kind of a miss imo. The trout was generous, but it was extremely salty. I couldn't even eat half of the plate without drinking a ton of water. The salad, on the other hand, was much better, especially the one with kale, avocado, and apples! It was a wonderful mix and tasted so good. The drinks were also good. I got the french 76, which was just the right amount of sweet and very refreshing! Loved the color as well, and just a hint of lavender was nice Service was good overall, although we had to wait some time for water refills. They were busy though for a weekend evening during prime dinner hour. My husband and I were excited to try Julia's Bistro & Bar after reading about the restaurant and seeing so many positive reviews. Unfortunately, our experience was very mixed, especially considering the price point and reputation. The meal actually started off great. Our server was friendly, attentive, and one of the highlights of the evening. My husband ordered the French onion soup, which was excellent, and I started with the crispy Brussels sprouts with bacon, blue cheese, and balsamic reduction. Those were absolutely delicious and probably my favorite thing I ate all night. The entrees were where things went downhill. My husband ordered the steak frites. The server explained they were in the process of changing the menu and offered a New York strip instead, describing it as coming with a sauce featuring tomatoes. My husband agreed to try it. While the steak was cooked to the requested medium rare, the quality of the meat was disappointing. It was sinewy, had a large tendon running through the center, and honestly didn't resemble what we'd expect from a New York strip. The sauce was even more confusing. Instead of something tomato-forward, it was a thin brown gravy with a couple of halved cherry tomatoes on top. The flavors didn't seem to work together, and the seasoning was just off. I ordered the Southern Fried Chicken Piccata with Cajun butter, capers, spinach, and roasted vegetables. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't particularly memorable either. The dish looked flavorful, and I could see the capers, but surprisingly I couldn't really taste them. Overall, it felt under-seasoned and lacked the bright flavor I'd expect from a piccata. The roasted vegetables, however, were excellent. To finish the meal, we hoped to order the dulce de leche cheesecake, but we were told the dessert menu had recently changed and it was no longer available, which was disappointing. Overall, there were definitely some bright spots: the service, French onion soup, Brussels sprouts, and roasted vegetables were all very good. However, the entrees were underwhelming, and for the price and hype surrounding the restaurant, we expected a much better dining experience. read more

Fabulous service, good wine list (ask your server for interesting recommendations and hidden gems), and a charming industrial interior. The menu feels like a French chef moved to Texas and decided to cook what he wanted: a delicious fusion of Texan and French cuisines. Ask for off menu specials- tonight we shared a tuna tartare appetizer. The signature lamb shank entree was a favorite (although some of us thought it was a little like mutton), and my lovely light beet salad with perfectly cooked shrimp was great for a hot Texas evening. It is a very well designed and quaint restaurant at the roundabout on Blanco. More parking in the back ... but it is dark after hours. We dined on Friday night, and I recommend a reservation. As our first trip, we decided to try a lot of dishes and drinks on the menu. Let's start with the hostess knew us the minute we showed up ... gave her the name and she said "dinner for four". Wow! Drinks to start ... the Smokey paradise was a delicious mix of flavors .. hint of ginger beer and jalapeño (not much heat). Julia's martini was a favorite at the table as well. The VDR blend was rich, sweet and bold. Appetizers ordered: east coast oysters, escargot and hummus. All were excellent! The oysters have the salty water. A note on the hummus ... the carrots are in the hummus, and the dish is served with bread for dipping. We then moved onto French onion soup and the beet salad. The soup had a super rich broth with lots of onions. The beet salad was a green salad with a beet base. However, it was tasty. The main dishes: steak fries, lamb shank and mushroom risotto. The steak was cooked perfectly and covered with butter and pepper. Hint... you can sub with truffle fries. The lamb shank was large and drenched in the sauce ... thick, rich sauce with hints of cinnamon and chocolate. The risotto was my only disappointment .. it was rather flavorless and the mushrooms were mushy. The service was spot on. Efficient but not intrusive. read more

I was visiting a friend in San Antonio and she suggested this place for brunch. Because she lives there and frequents the restaurant, i made reservations online -- a very easy process, which included a couple of confirmation emails. Parking is a PITA. We fortunately arrived early enough for me to circle the block (in ever increasing circles) several times before i found a spot. It would be lovely if a caution about parking could be included in the reservation email. When we walked in, we were hit with a wall of clatter/chatter. It is a cute interior with a fun atmosphere and whimsical art on the walls. We were seated, and i appreciated the hanging privacy dividers between the tables along the benches. There were only two setups for the three of us. When the server brought water, we asked for another glass and rollup. When she asked for our orders, we had a few questions and partway through the request, the server wandered over to another table. I wasn't excited about the menu as the selections appeared to be either sweet items or egg items. Since we had met at 1:00, i would have preferred something more lunch-y. They were very accommodating when one friend asked for fries instead of potatoes, and again when the other friend and i wanted to split something (the friend eats tiny meals for medical reasons and can only take home so much food from restaurants on vacation). The Eggs and Bacon Avocado Toast was what i shared with my friend - it is one square of toast, a nice amount of bacon, delightful nuggets of capers, and two sunnyside-up eggs (maybe we got 2 eggs because we were sharing). I don't recall any avocado. It was accompanied by a lightly-dressed romaine salad. Everything was delicious and the unshared plate was a perfect serving for one. However, although the egg was listed in the menu as sunnyside-up, it was very sunny -- the whites not completely done. This was less of an issue for me, but my friend balked. We could have asked for more well-done eggs, but we didn't. No bad on the restaurant. When we left, the restaurant was 90% empty, yet no one bid us a good day or thanked us for coming. Maybe it is a cultural thing, but it made me feel unwelcome. read more

The parking can be a little bit of a challenge but keep in mind there is more parking behind the restaurant. When we arrived, we were greeted by the friendly hostess and waitress. The restaurant is open concept with a seating chart. It is cost and hip. They offer good happy hour specials with drinks and appetizers. I ordered the French onion soup and the short rib dish. My friend had French onion soup, spicy truffle fries, and calamari. All the dishes were presented well and looked great on their plate. The only quip I had was my food did not have enough seasoning. The portions are good, the price is reasonable, and everything arrived pretty quickly. The soup was melty goodness. The short rib was tender and velvety but the flavor was a little lacking. The crispy brussel sprouts had no seasoning whatsoever. A pinch of salt and hitting them with a pinch of acid would have done the trick. We ordered the burger and it was probably one of the best I've had in a while!! Perfectly cooked and the egg made it perfect. The fries were crispy and salty, my favorite was dipping them in the leftover yolk. My bf got the croquette madame* which comes with the egg! It was hot, flavorful, and super affordable. We also ordered a bottle of bubbly with guava and orange juice. Only $15, which is normal but still we love not having to pay $30 at a brunch spot for a cheaper bottle of champagne. Additionally, the bathroom and way to bathroom was hidden behind storage items and water spots on the ceiling/uneven ceiling tiles did not give the appearance of a sanitary establishment. We were lucky enough to snag a table, but you should really make a reservation. We had phenomenal service. They have a great price on mimosas and the food was delicious. I loved the environment of this place. It didn't feel like a typical San Antonio restaurant, there was something extra special about it. Lemon ricotta pancakes 5/5 so good. Fluffy pancakes. Amazing flavor and I don't normally like lemon sauces. Big blueberries. It was like dessert. French toast 8/5. Yes! On a scale of 5 they are an 8! Probably one of the best I have ever had. So fluffy and moist with a hint of caramelized sugar. You could eat it as breakfast or dessert. So good! Pastry basket 4/5. Croissants weren't the best we ever had but pretty good. Not bad for being the weakest link. Julia's Crepes 8/5. Again, yes 8 out of 5, so good! Perfectly cooked mushrooms and spinach in a cream sauce wrapped in a beautiful and delicate crepe. So much flavor! The Piece de Resistance: Barbacoa eggs Benedict 10/5 So freaking AMAZING!!! The barbacoa is so flavorful. Very juicy and not greasy. Did I mention the flavor! The eggs were perfectly cooked. The hollandais sauce was awesome. I'm assuming the English muffin was good. Julia's is a cool Mexican French bistro on Blanco, which is directly across the street from the San Antonio staple, Blanco Cafe. The art that dons the walls is for sale; the bar is fully stocked; and the staff is friendly and attentive. It got a bit warm, but it wasn't unbearable. The parking looks sparse, but you don't have to play Fogger dodging traffic because I was told there was parking behind the building. I look forward to going back to try the double bone pork chop. MUST try: *Spicy Truffle Fries: They had me at spicy aioli and truffle dust. *Steak Frites: Rosewood farm Wagyu flat iron steak, chimichurri, fries. I ordered mine medium rare and with potato mousseline instead of frites because we had truffle fries as a shared appetizer. The chimichurri adds the perfect flavor to the steak. *Seared Shrimp: Spinach, parmesan polenta cake, spicy creamy tomato sauce. The polenta cake was perfectly cooked and added a delicious element of unexpected texture. The sauce is so good that you will want to sop it up. Our waitstaff, Tim, indulged us with freshly toasted bread, so we could do just that. The lobster carbonara was well-received at the table by others. It was good, but it's so hard for me because my Italian friend, who has set the bar so high that it's rare for me to highly recommend pasta dishes. The onion soup was very good, but the very best I've ever had remains at Au Pied de Cocbon in Paris. The baked oysters were also good, but the best in SA remains those at Rebelle. read more
