I always walk by here and finally decided to give it a try , and man was I glad I did. I came in at 3pm on a Saturday, expecting it to be busy but it was completely empty. The employee quickly greeted me, and provided me with a menu when I told her I would be ordering takeout. They conveniently have two menus one vegetarian menu and one regular menu. I'd seen plenty of reviews on the anticuchos, aka the beef heart skewers, and I thought I would live a little and give it a try. I also ordered the lomo saltado, which is thinly cut steak served with vegetables rice and French fries. While I was waiting for my food, I could not help but appreciate the interior of this restaurant. This place is designed exceptionally well. This would be a perfect atmosphere for a lunch/dinner date or to meet friends. I was utterly amazed at the interior and ambiance of this restaurant. The food was prepared in about 10 minutes, and the entire time I could smell the delicious and mesmerizing aromas coming from the kitchen. I regretted getting my food to go because those savory scents made me want to dig into the food as soon as it came out. Once I finally got enjoy the food, my only two regrets were: 1. Why didn't I order more menu items ? 2. Why haven't I tried this place earlier? The anticuchos was marinated and cooked to perfection. Beef heart is not something you see on a menu often and a lot of places that serve it tend to overcook it which causes it to be overly tough and chewy. You only get one skewer for this order, but there is a good amount of beef on that one skewer. This dish is served with sliced potatoes that added a nice textural balance to the dish. The sauce they serve it with is a bit spicy, so test it out first before bathing your food in it. The anticuchos is probably not for everyone, as beef heart has a slight iron like taste to it that some people might not like if they are not accustomed to it. The lomo saltado was pretty tasty, however I thought there was far too much rice and not enough steak and vegetables compared to most places I've gotten this dish in the past. The rice was your typical white rice, nothing special. But the beef and vegetables were seasoned nicely and cooked to perfection. Price wise, this restaurant is not cheap but not overly expensive. For the two dishes I got, it came out to around $42 not including gratuity. Overall, I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who likes Peruvian food and/or is looking for a place with a nice ambiance to enjoy a meal alone, a dare, or friends/family. I will definitely be returning and checking out some of their other menu items. read more

We were a large party and waited over two hours to be served. They only had one chef cooking, which made the wait extremely long and unfair for our family. The food also did not come out together, one person would get their plate while another was still waiting. Some of us had already finished eating by the time the rest of the food arrived. Following our Dodgers to SF for the weekend we stayed in Oakland. We were getting back into the area of our hotel a little late and this restaurant was open and fairly busy. The service was good, and from what I could see the drinks looked good. We didn't get into the drink menu since we were pretty hungry. I ordered the Arroz con Marisco and my wife ordered the Lomo Saltado. The marisco dish was delicious, plenty of seafood, tasty, and a nice portion. The Lomo Saltado had so much flavor. The sauce, the onions, the steak and the papas, all delicious. It's pretty obvious we were sharing both dishes. Definitely a place if you like Peruvian food or if you've never had it a nice spot to try it out. Again, service was very good. This place is at 2.5 stars for me. Guy and I decided to come here on the premise of having craft cocktails and for him to get his lomo saltado. So we took an Uber here to be safe, and it turns out this place has their alcohol license revoked. No drinks afterall, although they serve them in the house club that's adjoined. I'm sure there would have been a cover charge, and in the time we were there (until 9:30), no band played even though curtain was 9pm. Food was solid. Totally on point. I ordered arroz con pollo, and the chicken and cilantro rice were on point. Looking for lunch after 2pm yesterday - a Sunday - I strolled on in. Upon walking in I liked the decor of the restaurant. It's not too bright and it's not too dark, but the light is dim. My waiter was sweet, and recommended the beef empanada. It was really good, and the bread was thick and sweet as though it were baked in honey. It was more like a sweet empanada that I would have for breakfast as there was some egg in it. It was served with a tangy orange sauce. The sauce was okay, but i prefer a cilantro sauce with it. I've had pollo Saltado before but I really wanted to try the empanada and it didnt disappoint. I'll definitely be back. I received attentive service and I am excited about the rest of the menu. I love this place! The interior is nice the security guys are nice and friendly and I feel like I am in a nice supper club. And best of all they seem to have a lot of Latin music. My friend and I had a great time. The one very important feature that I would hope would be greatly considered is to put in nice wood floors or anything that doesn't stick. I am a salsa dancer and no serious salsa dancer would dance on this floor because it is sticky. You can hurt your knees as a woman doing turns on a sticky floor. Great server! Before I say anything else, the young man was knowledgeable about the food and attentive. However, the quality of the beef in the lomo saltado was terrible! Some cuts were tender while others were CHEWY, and my serving featured five bites of solid fat. Not bits of fat on a slice of beef- full on slices of fat without any beef. So, settled for Chicken fried rice and wife had chicken tenders which took 30 minutes (we were the only patrons). Ordered unsweetened tea, but was told they only have sweet tea. I love Peruvian food. I love Pisco Sours. So, imagine my delight to happen upon this quaint little Peruvian restaurant adjacent to Jack London Square in Oakland. I decided to grab an early dinner on a Friday night and had the restaurant to myself. I sat in the front area, unaware at the time that there was a different section located in the back. My server was not overly friendly at first, but was prompt and able to answer my questions sufficiently. I got the distinct impression that he was helping the servers out and not normally front house waitstaff. He knew the menu and loosened up a bit by the end. My Pisco Sour was perfect and I decided to try a dish I had not had elsewhere before: Carapulcra $21 and started with a special Tamal de Pollo $8. First if all, the Tamal plating presebtation was colorful and vibrant. The flavor didn't disappoint. It had hints if citrus and was perfectly textured. I would definitely have this again and maybe even make an entree out if it by adding some sides. My Carapulcra was delicious too. I wasn't sure what to expect based on the waiter's description, which was mostly about the spice level. It's essentially a stew with a pyramid of jasmine rice on the side. Again, beautiful presentation (hard to capture in a photo but I tried!) and flavorful. Although the server insisted it was mild without being bland, I would definitely advise that it has a little kick to it. Definitely not bland. Lots of flavor and texture. And a large enough portion that I opted to take half home for later. I rounded out my meal with their rice pudding, which is definitely portioned to share but I managed anyway. The first few bites were amazing and filled with unexpected sweet spices. It's served warmed. I decided to peek in the back room before I left and it was an entirely different ambiance. They call it the Annexo and it offers a stage and more trendy environment. All and all I left sated and excited to return. read more

I came here for both a show and music. They have a nice setup in the back for a band to play, and it has dim lighting which makes for a cool setting. I ordered the lomo saltado and tried some pollo saltado and a rice/seafood dish. The lomo saltado was very well seasoned and the flavor was delicious with the rice and potatoes. This is one of my faves! The chicken was well marinated too, and I'd want to eat this again. The staff were attentive, and we got our orders promptly. They offer some bites too if you like fried plantains or roasted corn. As for the music venue, this place has great sound and has a nice space to dance if you want to! I'd come back here again. My girlfriends and I went there to see ANDY CALLAO y orchestra and the place was packed ! The ambience was great ! We made our way to the front door , checked in and sat at the bar which was still relatively empty. I ordered a mojito which took a long time given there weren't so many people at the bar just yet. The bartender seemed to have a huge attitude for unknown reasons !! I dismissed it at first cause I was having a great time with the music and dancing but when I ordered a second mojito I was COMPLETELY IGNORED several times by the bartender who turned out to be the owner !! What!?!? He was making drinks left and right for everyone who approached the bar but made sure my friends and I got his ignorant dismissive treatment as if we didn't count. We ordered a couple of appetizers which turned out to be delicious . I got my second mojito thru the waitress long time later but when I asked for another one .... again the bartender /owner disregarded us and never made my drink .... wtf !?? Came here with a group of 6 ladies. First impression was good, the restaurant was clean, our server was friendly. The band was playing good music. The dim lighting was really setting the mood. Drinks were tasty and strong. We had a nice little buzz going. The mood immediately changed once the owner who was likely old enough to be our father decided to flirt with one of the ladies in our group. Nope, not having it. We ignored him so he left but kept walking by smiling at us. AWKWARD! Food arrived and it was immediately disappointing. I had the Lomo Saltado but it should be listed as "Lomito Saltado" it was tiny. The meat was dry, overcooked and salty. We decided to start making our way I to Chinatown. On our way, we noticed there was plenty of seating here and two of my friends love Peruvian food so we decided to eat here. The hostess asked if we wanted to sit in the front or the back. We opted for the back. WOW. The back is WAY different than the front. The front half of the restaurant looks pretty average. Nice lights. A little...ornate? Kind of your average dining experience. But the back, the back is colorful, with a stage, booths that remind you of a night club, a beautiful bar, and what I think was a dance floor. Complete 180. We each ordered a drink and I immediately ordered us some vegetarian empanadas because I was starving. We were also provided som fabulous, warm bread. The empanada were GREAT! It comes with two and they were kind enough to split them for us. My friends are vegetarians and they loved them too. For dinner I had essentially fish and rice (can't remember the name) but it was so tasty! I really enjoyed the full flavor of the rice and that there were various types of fish. Honestly, this was like a diamond in the rough. We all want this place to succeed because it was so good and fun. I'll be taking my dad the next time he visits because yeah - it was that good!!! I want to give this restaurant more stars and just can't do it. It's in a good location on Broadway by Jack London Square and 12th St Bart, and they have a lounge-like back room with a stage for entertainment and a beautiful long bar, so it has a ton of potential. However, it needs improvement in a number of areas. The BF and I decided to come here for Valentine's Day dinner. We had only previously been here for drinks and really wanted to try the food. We asked to be seated in the back room and were excited to have the entire thing all to ourselves, but this also should have been a warning sign. Why was it not more crowded? My BF was craving beef and ordered the Bistek Encebollado while I opted for the Parihuela. I enjoyed mine but sad to say there were some major problems with the steak. Fail #1: I guess we should have been wary of the fact that the waiter never asked my BF what temperature he wanted his steak, and it arrived well-done to the point of being leather. Yes, he should have sent it back, but he's not the type to do so. I will say the sauce over the steak was really yummy, but it didn't save it. This was a very thin sirloin and really just needed a minute each side on the grill, if even that. Meanwhile, I did enjoy my Parihuela. The stew was packed with lots of seafood which was also a bit overcooked, but not to the same point as the steak. Fail #2: We ordered glasses of a nice red wine and I decided to get a 2nd glass, which the waiter said he'd be right back with. 20 minutes later he showed up again and asked if there was anything else we needed, having totally forgotten about the wine. He did run for the bottle at that point and poured an extra-full glass . I know these things happen sometimes, but the restaurant was really not crowded enough for this type of error. Fail #3: Not a specific failure but just lots of little things. For example, I was dying to try their ceviches, but you can only order these as entrees. I really think they're missing out not to offer appetizer-sized portions as well. Also, so many other restaurants in the neighborhood had specials for Valentine's Day. I think they missed a ton of business here. I think La Furia Chalaca could easily bring themselves up to a 4 star experience and I hope I have reason to modify my review in future. For now, still decent but just not great. read more

We took my father in law here and we all loved it!! It was the most authentic Peruvian food we've had since we visited Peru! The arroz con pillo was just like I remember from Cusco! The cilantro rice is my favorite!! Our server offered some alternatives to empanadas (since they ran out of empanadas) and they were amazing! A pork tamale and a fried sweet potato with carne asada inside!! Omg it was amazing and so flavorful !! Hello after read a few reviews , am thinking to do some adjustments here. I come in this place for a quick lunch. The hour is off the main meal time so I have the whole place myself. It's neat and clean. I know the food type a little, so I ordered my usual dish. The young server/ owner's son is very pleasant . The food is tasty and right about the amount plus quality for one person lunch . Didn't I know that the chef is actually the grandma, that makes the food felt homemade. The food material is fresh. The rice they use taste a slightly different than the regular long white rice. It's delicious. I guess it's the cooking way differ. A simple nice lunch makes the day cozy and relaxing . read more
