All ice cream are made in-house. We stopped by right as they opened at 1pm and Alfonso apologized as some flavors might not have set enough to be served since he came in a bit late today. He usually comes in around 5am to prep when flavors are running low. Everything we tried wasn't too sweet. Definitely will be coming back and trying other flavors! Taro -so creamy, perfectly flavored and not overly artificial. Horchata -not too much cinnamon. Surprisingly good for it being water based, just enough creaminess from the condensed milk in it. Strawberry Jamaica -if you love strawberries, this flavor is it. Paired perfectly with chamoy and tajin. Mango -so refreshing, I added condensed milk on my own and chef's kiss. Wished they offered condensed milk here! Watermelon -liked this more than the Mango, but both are good. Chamoy and Tajin paired well! Mamey -creamy but the prefect amount of fruitiness. Also sooo good. Coffee -if you love Vietnamese coffee, this one is for you. It was so strong in a good way. We topped it with condensed milk at home and it was chef's kiss. Crack in a cup.. If you don't like strong coffee, stray away. Pistachio -tons of crushed pistachio throughout. Guanabana (soursop)- favorite flavor from water based we tried. It tastes just like the real fruit. Lime -just enough tanginess. My colleague ordered this and opted for no chamoy, personally felt like it was missing something but still good on its own. We topped it with condensed milk and also chef's kiss. Vanilla -sooo creamy and good, there is depth that I can't explain. Coconut- creamy coconut milk, not artificial flavor taste. Tons of coconut shreds if you don't mind texture. But it's a bit much if you get more than one scoop. read more

Now I can say, I found a place that's just like the guy down the street from my abuelita's in GDL. Yesterday, we stopped at La Garrafa MX on our way to LA. As we walked-in I felt the "Mexico vibe" we greeted and were greeted by staff and customers "buenas tardes, buenas tardes, buenas tardes." Loved it! Establishment had two other couples and then our group of three. Who I presume was the owner was very nice guiding us thru his best selling flavors and providing us samples. We talked here and there and our families are so close to each other in GDL and Tamazula so we decided he's our honorary cousin. Lol Nieve de garrafa surpassed my expectations and it's the closest you'll get the nieve de garrafa estilo Jalisco. We plan to return again today on our way back home. In the future this foodie won't mind making the 2hr drive for nieve de garrafa. What a gem!!! To find Mexican style ice cream over here is such a treat. Nieve de garrafa is the style of ice cream and it's usually more of a sorbet like texture. Very smooth and refreshing with natural ingredients or flavors! I love it cause it's a lot lighter than US ice creams. We got the flavors - coconut & strawberry hibiscus, horchata, mango and lime with tajin and chamoy All were hits! My favorite was the coconut. The interior was nice and looks newly renovated. They had A/C on a hot day and a cute little patio. There was also parking. The service was quick, and the cashier understood both English and Spanish. She was friendly too. From the outside it's a bit hidden, but once inside the owner was incredibly welcoming and made us feel right at home. Cute little nieve spot in Montebello. I've been been here about 2 or 3 times. The water-based nieves are really good (could be a little sweeter). They have so many flavors to choose from! Wow so happy this place exists! "Garrafa" ice cream is hard to come by, but my favorite kind to have. It's refreshing like shaved ice, but smooth like traditional ice cream. Texture wise it is somewhere in between. I love how they have traditional flavors and also seasonal fun options. (Not that traditional isn't fun enough already lol) I have loved all the flavors I have tried so far. I was shocked they had Taro, but it's definitely a must try! It's honestly insulting that I haven't written a review for La Garrafa sooner and I apologize profusely for this mistake. If any establishment in Montebello deserves a most excellent review, it is La Garrafa. I had been hearing a lot of hype around Montebello about this ice cream place saying it's the "best ice cream in Montebello". The first thought my cynical mind had was "well is it really that hard to have the best ice cream in Montebello?" Boy, I don't think I realized this might be one of the best ice cream shops in Los Angeles. Period. You can taste how fresh and light the flavors are. They honestly all taste amazing but my personal favorites are cookies and cream and taro. Like come on, how could cookies and cream taste that much exceptionally different, but La Garrafa does it. Their fruit flavors that are water-based (shout out to all the lactose intolerant folks) are absolutely perfect for a summer day. They also have savory snacks. My personal favorite is hot cheeto esquites. I could just buy that and 2 scoops of ice cream and I'd be good on lunch. The best part is their prices. I think if this shop were in West LA / Venice / Santa Monica, they'd market themselves as unique, fresh, maybe even healthy and try to upcharge a lot. This is just an honest man and his daughter running a small business. They don't over charge to have simple delicious ice cream, and I find it easy to tip when I leave.
