I usually get the tres Leche and dulce de Leche, which are bomb here - the best. This time, we figured we'd try something new and got the carrot cake - one of my favourites. A good start for us was the nuts and raisins it contained, but the good qualities stopped there. The cake proved too much resistance for the teeth while the texture was too chunky. The flavours proved to be palatable, but the consistency of the cake brings this cake way down. We will not be coming back for the carrot cake but will definitely return for the usual tres Leche. read more

Like a devout Muslim making a Hajj, I found my pilgrimage to Sunset Park soul transforming. I finally found my "tres leches" Mecca. I have a weakness for "tres leches" cake. I would convert to a right wing conservative, NRA member and a Republican if I knew those were the things keeping me from my beloved "tres leches" cake. Well thank Allah the world has not come to that...just yet. We were on a Taco Crawl here in Sunset Park and we passed by a few "panaderias" and I couldn't resist them. I looked on my yelp app, and this place popped up as getting good reviews. So, I dragged my entourage into this bakery to find some sugary "goodies." I like bustling happening places. I felt like I was at the race tracks. There were people shouting and waving dollar bills, and well the scene was just fantastic. I ordered a "tres leches" cake and immediately the counter help knew she was dealing with an amateur. I am used to places that only carry ONE kind of tres leches cake. But here, there were two rows of cakes dedicated to the tres leches persuasion. I thought I died and had gone to Nirvana. There was plain tres leches, dulce de leche with tres leches, fresa tres leches, chocolate tres leches. You name the kind of tres leches you wanted, and La Gran Via delivered. They knew their tres leches cakes and I was in heaven. I stood there dumbfounded for a few seconds, and then decided on the dulce de leche with tres leches cake. I was fast heading into a diabetic coma. This was one of the best tres leches cake I have devoured in a long time. I am usually pretty pathetic and buy a slice fro Whole Foods, but this place is so much better and so much cheaper. For $2.25, you too can be in a diabetic coma! read more

It's a hole in the wall in the middle of possibly the worst double parking area, BUT you need to come in and spend at least $10 on getting fat off their pastries. Almost every other weekend my sister and I come here to load up on guava & cheese pastries, beef pastries, cheese pastries, elephant ears, cakes, coffee.......and clearly the list goes on and on. The best thing about this place is that it is super cheap and super delicious. If your ever in the area, don't bother going to the nice, romantic places in Hoboken, stick to the hole in the walls for some real Cuban delights. P.s. I came here to buy a cake for my dad's bday. I bought the pineapple/vanilla custard cake. The cake here was not bad. I didn't like their meringue frosting. ..it was too sweet for me. The tres leches by itself is enough to make me come back here, but if your looking for a personalized cake you won't be disappointed when you go here. They make beautiful cakes and it is also delicious. Not the best place to sit down and enjoy some sweets because it is usually very crowded here with people in and out. We were very disappointed, it was one of the worst "dominican" Cake we've ever had. Specially since my mom was a baker back in DR, we know what to expect. The cake was dry, very dry, not too far from cornbread. It didn't have pineapple filling, it had pineapple chunks!!! My boyfriend and I met with a former colleague at this bakery that's situated on 5th Avenue in Sunset Park. The moment I stepped in there was a beautiful array of desserts, pastries, cupcakes, and cookies in the displays. This is a really small bakery with limited seating as well. There's only a counter and about 5-7 stools. We came to La Gran Via Bakery to catch up and grab coffee. Our former colleague treated us to hot beverages and as for me, he treated me to an iced coffee and we bought a coconut cookie and a slice of strawberry cheesecake. Their iced coffee was great! It wasn't too sweet which is exactly what I wanted and had a little bitterness to it. The strawberry cheesecake was mediocre. It wasn't the best strawberry cheesecake I had. It didn't feel soft or smooth like a cheesecake should be. I also bought a pound of butter cookies. Since we went a week or two prior to Valentine's Day, the bakery already had Valentine's Day cookies in stock. There were cookies that were red and pink, heart shaped and a cookie that's shaped like a pair of lips (a little freaky if you ask me). The staff here are very laid-back and friendly. I used to love this place since I've been coming here since I was a kid. I even brought my husband and his family. I moved away and still come here because of the food, but the customer service has gone down the drain. The food is heading that same direction as well. I order my food in advance online and yet when I get there it's never ready. I came in and patiently waited. Since they constantly have new employees, some newbie they have there had an attitude immediately. Even after I showed her my receipt she gave me a hard time and didn't want to give me my food. La Gran Via did my wedding cake. Since I started the wedding planning process, my non-negotiable was a delicious 'latino'' wedding cake like my mum makes. Betsy was great about taking the order and making sure we tried everything. Unfortunately, they completely messed up the colours and style I wanted for my cake and it looked like a gaudy hot mess, not at all like the pictures I'd emailed them. Obviously, I was disappointed when I set eyes on it, given that it would forever be immortalized in my wedding photos. The only reason why I'm not giving them 2 stars is because it was friggin delicious. I had several of my guests come up to me and confess they had more than 2 pieces. There was no cake left when we went to pick up our stuff from our venue the next day- it was a 4 tier cake. Delicious cakes. dubious follow through. My favorite is the Tres Leches with fresh strawberries and pineapple. Dulce de Leche is also a family favorite. Whenever we order, we would have our order fulfilled within the same day. A few years back, my regular lunchtime order would be their Cuban sandwiches, but I needed to give that up because my waistline was getting too happy with it. I recently ordered a small birthday cake for my husband and the business owner Royd was so helpful! He had my order ready in a matter of hours, and took the extra step in delivering it outside since I was double-parked (the traffic police are vicious on 5th Ave). I am a big fan of this place and I will be getting all my cakes from here from now on always!! We needed a cake for my god daughter and this was the third bakery we visited for the task. We got lost finding it cause we are Queens girls but once I called and spoke to someone named Betsy she gave me great directions. So we finally get there and I ask for this Betsy person because I wanted to thank her for her patients and help with finding the place. The young girl working at the counter said she will be right with me. Well turns out she is the owner!!! We waited about 5-10 minutes for her but she was worth the wait. Wow, what excellent customer service! We thanked her for the directions and we started talking cake. She has great affordable packages that you can't really find anywhere else. (trust me, this was our third bakery as mentioned before) We ended up getting package #2, cake for 50 people along with 200 appetizers filled with meat, cheese guava and something with a garlic mixture. She worked with us when telling her exactly what we wanted and and had the patients of a god. (the theme was yo gabba gabba). She assured us everything would be taken care of. I put up a picture for you guys to see and the faces on top we got from Amazon and placed them on ourselves. Cake looked great but what was more important it tasted fantastic! I'm telling you my fellow yelpers I rarely am happy with product PLUS customer service, I mean this place is a win win all around. I've never order a whole cake from them but I've tried a bunch of different things. The tres leche slice is as authentic as it can get. As long as you're prepared to be a little flexible, LGV will come through for you. They were able to create a beautiful cake for me with 24 hours' notice. To be fair, I waited an hour past the time I asked that it be ready, and the cake had a different batter than I requested (I asked for Dominican cake and they couldn't have it ready in time without swapping for homestyle). But it was really a lovely cake and I would definitely come again for a future celebration cake. Pro tip: stick with the classics - I asked for pineapple and buttercream filling: the pineapple was perfect, but the buttercream I would describe as serviceable. Wow... so so disappointed here. The chicken and cheese empanada was good, taste wise, however the cheese inside was not even melted. I also ordered the Media Noche, which I am still regretting even eating the couple of bites that I did. And second, the overall taste of the sandwich was just not good at all. Growing up Cuban, one of my favorite sandwiches was the media noche and I was super excited to find a local spot that had it, but this one just missed on every account. However, the worst part of the entire order was the coffee... I have never in my life had a coffee so disgusting. I've been coming to this bakery for over 15 years and have always loved the food and service! Unfortunately, the service we had this morning was nothing to love. My parents and I ordered our breakfast and as I paid the bill, I realized that the employee by the name of Janet left out my dad's order for coffee. My dad jokingly asked her if she was ok, since it was 5am and the music was blasting, but what was meant to be a playful comment was met with a nasty bark from Janet. No apology for missing the coffee order, instead she told us that she doesn't like jokes at her job. Perhaps someone needs to teach Janet what customer service is all about or perhaps she shouldn't be working the early morning shift. I was able to visit LGV because my cousin lives in Brooklyn and when I went to go visit her she recommended it (I'm from Miami...I know what amazing Cuban pastries taste like)...and this...THIS...is the REAL deal! Pros: Amazing guava/cheese pastries! Open 24 hours...YESS!! Drunk munchies ;) Pan.Con.Bistec...TRUST ME! amazing sandwich made with a skirt steak, lettuce, tomato, mayo, and onion...yumm! Best Tres Leches I've ever tried! It's to die for! Tacos!! Amazing. They used to be a good bakery, about 10years ago, an my stupid self kept coming an thinking it would get better but NO not at all, there hot food is decent, coffee is good but Honestly I'm not here for the hot food. Nothing but great things to say about this bakery! Betsy (owner) is very accommodating, personal and sweet! She helped me customize just the right cake for my boyfriends birthday. He is a VERY picky person and he devoured the leftovers! The cake came out beyond delicious, moist, rich and light on the stomach. Everyone at the party loved the cake as well. It was a huge hit! I also had their red velvet, dolce de leche, strawberry cheesecake, chocolate covered cheesecake, pineapple and coconut cakes (I'm greedy) and all taste amazing! After reading the reviews here, I was very excited to try it out. But very disappointing. I tried Tres Leches cake, and I know very well how it is supposed to taste like. It was not AT ALL spongy, how it is supposed to be. Rather a bread soaked in sickeningly sweet milk, which smelt way too milky. I have experienced better "bakeries".
