This charming cozy spot is a little market/cafe/pizzaria/bar. I especially like their ready made, to go items when I need to grab lunch to take somewhere. This review is only for the cakes at La Grande Orange. I came with a weekend dessert hankering with two of my girl friends to sample La Grande Orange's decadent cake selection. I'd heard of this cute little shop before, but hadn't had the chance to come in. It's a sort of brunch-coffee-dessert-indie store hybrid. Really cute, pretty crowded, and somewhat cramped with seating. Service was friendly and quick. Red velvet cake: The six layers with even cream cheese frosting in between in each layer looked so inviting. The layers could have been a touch more even, especially the middle layer, but that's difficult to do. The cream cheese frosting was less on the tart side, which made this cake suuuuper rich. I liked the crumble on the cake, but it was a touch dry. Berry compote cheesecake: This was an incredibly dense cheesecake with tart berry compote on top. I thought the berry compote was a great idea, but it was so solid that it was more of a jelly. I would have preferred a jigglier berry compote to ease some of the denseness of the cheesecake. The little chocolate swirls on top were a nice festive touch, but I wish they were a peppermint flavor rather than just plain white chocolate, as I think that would have been more refreshing. Lime meringue pie: I was really impressed with how the meringue had been shaped in this pie, but quickly realized that it was not meringue, but whipped cream. I rather liked the combination, as the tartness of the lime was balanced with the creaminess of the whipped cream. The whipped cream was solid heavy cream though, barely any sugar or vanilla of any kind. The first few bites were great, but it got one-dimensional pretty quickly. Had there been some vanilla or sweetness to the whipped cream, I think it would have held onto my palate better. It's also a hefty tower of whipped cream to lime curd ratio, and I would have preferred a more even spread. Cake slices were $5.25 and up, with the six-layer red velvet cake being more expensive. I think for the price I was expecting a little more, but I'm glad I got to try La Grande Orange. read more

Another Arcadia Lite staple nestled in a cute neighborhood with a plethora of offerings for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They truly have something for everyone. Personally, I'm more of an LGO dinner fan. Their pizza is top notch, and as others have mentioned before, their crust is out of this world. Its thin and crispy, but also has a doughy-ness to it that makes gives it a wide variety of textures. Plus, the flavor is stellar! Highly recommend their corn pizza. It might sound a bit different than traditional pizza you're used to, but it's really out of this WORLD. Breakfast and lunch is overall decent. They have great coffee, but I've always found the food to be incredibly mediocre and overpriced for what it is. Although, I'm willing to look past this as I shovel my Commuter breakfast sandwich in my mouth while perusing the trinket and knick knack area (it's wonderful and there are some great finds if you look close enough). As for the negatives, there aren't many things that are truly outstanding or consistent. There are only two things I'll point out: 1) The parking is always a nightmare. Tip: instead of parking in the front lot, park in the back in the lot next to Postino and walk in through the kitchen. You're much more likely to find a spot, and won't be stuck sitting on 40th street blocking traffic while waiting for a mom and her 6 kids to pile in their minivan and then drive the wrong way out of the parking lot. 2) The customer service is extremely hit or miss. One day, you'll walk in and be greeted by a friendly cashier who's eager to hear about your day and be your best friend. The next day, you'll walk in and observe the entire staff wanting to simultaneously swan dive off the roof. It's truly bizarre, but also understandable. If I had to deal with the middle aged entitled Arcadia mom crowd day in and day out, I'd probably feel the same way. Ending on a positive note, I'll also say that their gelato is absolute FIRE. They always have a few rotating flavors to accompany their standard flavors. If they have the raspberry cheesecake gelato, game over. Overall, if you're in the Arcadia Lite hood, this place is a must. Just be wary of the front parking lot and swan diving employees. read more

We always pop in anytime in the area and snag ALL the cookies and pastries and coffee. La Grande Orange is the perfect place to meet up with a friend or colleague to have a casual catch-up. I ordered the Croque Madame and the French Pancakes and the food came hot and right on time, and they gave me lots of utensils and napkins which was a nice touch. The Croque Madame was amazing, the flavors and texture paired perfectly and it was one of the best Breakfast Sandwiches I've had in a while. Even the presentation was beautiful. Sigh....I hate it when business owners/corporations focus solely on the bottom line and ruin a place in the process. Enter La Grande Orange. Yelp recently published a list of the best chocolate chip cookies by state and Arizona's was La Grande Orange. I'd never heard of it and knew that I had to check it out, especially after visiting their website. "How cute!" I mused to myself. La Grande Orange should be everything Yelpers love. It's located in the heart of Phoenix's Arcadia neighborhood, brings together a community vibe, and sources a lot of local products. The gift shop IS adorable. Unfortunately, this place is totally chaotic. They've taken a small space (I suspect it has spread out over the years) and eaten up literally every square inch with product. I dare you to walk through this place and not bump into someone (not figuratively speaking) or something. To add to the chaos, you have weird systems. You order at the counter ("any register" according to the menu). I found a menu and stood at the register...for about five minutes. Finally, a server came over, "Have you been helped yet?" Nope! I ordered an iced coffee (a very nice Thai Basil & Mint with Coconut foam) and my food items. I was told that my name would be called out "about five minutes later." Not exactly true. My iced coffee was put at the end of the bar but never called. Then came the sh#$show with the food items. Two of my food items (bacon and oatmeal, if you must know!) were sitting on the counter along with my ticket. I kept waiting for the yogurt to come out. I finally walked up to the counter, "Should I just take these while I wait for the yogurt?" I was then informed that the yogurt was grab & go in one of the fridges in the gift shop. Would have been nice to know! The dining room is unattended and you just grab a table or one of the seats at the long chef's table. This was fine other than the fact they were pumping the music up. Unless I'm going to a place to get hammered at a boozy brunch like Hash Kitchen, I don't want music blasting during breakfast (they do serve alcohol but not even till 4!). A man sitting next to me had his laptop out and I seriously was mystified at how he was able to concentrate with the annoying background music. Undoubtedly, the vibe must be different in the evening, but this was 9 am on a Saturday! I want to slowly wake up and have a conversation with my breakfast companions. Then it was time to use the restroom. I looked around for signs. None up. I navigated the minefield back into the main room/store. Didn't want to trip and knock over a rack of wine that I'd have to pay for. I finally found an employee. When I asked her where the restroom was her answer floored me: "In the kitchen." Yup! You walk THROUGH the kitchen to use one of two restrooms (kudos on them being gender-neutral, though!). The whole thing felt unhygienic to me. The kitchen staff seemed pleasant enough. "Those pancakes look awesome!" I said to a chef on my way out. When I realized that the food pick-up area was so close to the restrooms that also kind of freaked me out. Not to mention all the other customers who loiter around, waiting for their food. I'm not super picky but we live in an era of coronaviruses and other weird stuff (Monkeypox was just declared a THING by the WHO this very morning!). I don't want other people hanging around my food! A cough and a sneeze with your avocado toast? No thanks. Hey La Grande Orange, ever considered giving diners a table card and bringing it out to them? Another perk? Less foot traffic in your already-crammed space! It was obvious that the employees hate working here. Can you blame them? They want to work in a cool cafe and mingle with cool guests. Instead, they work in a zoo which must be mentally draining. On my way out, I bought Yelp's recommended chocolate chip cookie. The employee who sold it to me looked like she wanted to murder me. They don't like getting bumped into themselves or giving directions to a restroom that should have clear signage. Shame on the owners of this place for creating such a bad environment for their employees and guests. How was the food? The cookie is still in a bag in my kitchen (I also bought a slice of carrot cake that I haven't tried yet). The yogurt and granola were lackluster and the fruit they curated in it was disappointing. The bacon was perfectly crisp. The oatmeal was awesome and a steal at $6 (generally, price points look reasonable). I was exhausted after my 30-minute visit here (Happy Saturday!). Navigating the restaurant and its unique processes was not something I was up for today (note to self: arrive drunk next time and it'll be funny). My advice if you decide to venture here is to come when they first open at 7 am. Get here before it gets packed and before the employees get surly. In cooler weather, grab one of the few tables outside. It would remove the loud music and the impact of so many people packed into a tight space. read more

We ordered food for curbside pick up. The server who brought our food out was so incredibly sweet and amazing. Her name is Gaby and she absolutely made our night with her sweet demeanor and kindness. We ordered a margarita pizza, cheeseburger, Caesar salad, and sangria. We found out that after I placed the order they realized they were out of sangria but made a whole new batch! That meant so much to me. We lived in Scottsdale for years but moved out of state seven years ago. Whenever we come back in to town, we stop at LGO.
