So this is listed as a Mexican restaurant but it's really not. It's Tohono O'Odham Native American and Tarascan Indigenous food. There is no category for that and it may scare some people away. To those who are scared, you will 100% miss out on one of the most authentic and unique experiences ever. To those that are craving for something local, like a good Mexican restaurant, look no further. The Tohono O'Odham reservation is to the West of Tucson, so yeah this is local food.
My brother and I had this pegged as one place we wanted to try. When you look at the menu and see handmade corn tortillas, it tells you all that you need to know about the food quality. That is what sold it to us. Make sure you check the hours because this is a family restaurant and, well they need some down time.
We arrived at 11am on Monday and were the first customers there. That gave us an opportunity to talk with the manager Josh, or Josue. He has an amazing bright personality and a very welcoming attitude. He connected with us quickly and made us feel even more excited about the food.
After we got seated, we had some homemade tortilla chips with a green salsa that I could eat all day. It was delicious. No pictures of the chips because we were way too excited. My brother knew what he wanted and I still had some issues deciding. I like to ask for suggestions because it takes some element of being safe away. Josh suggested to me the combo 4, which was chilie relleno, chicken enchilada and, chicken taco. However, he threw a twist on my order to give me the full experience. My brother had the picadillas. We both added on a tamale.
As we waited in anticipation, Josh would check in with us and he stopped by and told us about a charter school that was visiting and learning about the restaurant. This was another great experience for us to hear about the community work that they do for Tucson.
The time came when the food was ready and my brother and I looked at each other like we were kings. We knew, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that we made the right decision. The food was epically hot but we couldn't hold ourselves back. I started digging in before the picture and then took it.
The food was super fresh and, oddly, light. Below is my honest opinion on each of the items on our plates in ranked order.
1. Chicken tamales - The masa was the star here. I've had a LOT of tamales (grew up in Phoenix) and you are always on the lookout where the masa is made from corn and not corn flour. Josh informed us that his grandmother still hand makes the tamales. He showed us a quick video of her cutting the corn from the cob to make the masa. You can truly taste the difference here and the red sauce on top is a very nice compliment to it all.
2. Picadillas - This was a hard one for me because I absolutely loved the chilie relleno as well but I think these just had a slight edge. Everything was just so fresh and light. The corn tortilla, that is fried, was amazingly light. The flavor of the Carne asada was delicious. Just an awesome dish.
3. Chilie relleno - I could have had an entire plate of these. The egg batter that is used is really nice and the cheese was super melty and flavorful from the chilie.
4. Beef taco - I really enjoyed this taco. The corn tortilla was fried and each bite had a massive amount of beef. The only negative I had on it was that the bottom of the taco was a little soggy. I did eat that one last. If I would do it again, I would have eaten it first.
5. Rice and beans - These are some great rice and beans. Cool fun fact is that they don't use lard, chicken broth or MSG so it's purely a vegan option. In fact they offer quite a few meals for those that have that dietary restriction.
6. Chicken enchilada - I thought the green sauce was great, which I hear is made from green peas. The sauce seeped into my rice and that was super yummy. The only issue I had was with the chicken. It was the only thing that didn't have that super fresh flavor.
I would eat here again. I would love to try more of their menu. It's sad we only got one visit in but I am very grateful for it too. Did I mention that the meal was relatively inexpensive? I have traveled a fair bit. I have eaten at a lot of places. In the right place, they could easily charge double, if not triple, for their food. I may sound like I have a dude crush on this place, and you'd be right. We had an awesome lunch and met a cool person. What more could you ask for? read more
