While in Tucson, we looked up the listings of the 23 best Mexican food restaurants in the US and La Indita came up on the list. This is a local family restaurant with 5 generations of employees. The food is Mexican-Native American as the matriarch, Maria Garcia is a Purepecha Indian from Mexico. The food here is wonderful. With the complimentary chips, came the homemade salsa served in a cute decanter so you can refill your bowl when needed. Awesome! For dinner we had the #6 Combo (Carne Asada), the #4 Combo which was a Chile Relleno with a Chicken Enchilada and I had the House Special #4 which was a very large taco with the popover/fry bread. We each loved our food and had enough for leftovers which we eagerly consumed the following day. The packaging was very nice, as well One item I ordered was the chicken enchiladas with green sauce. The amount of green sauce was nothing like in the picture. There was no sauce surrounding the enchiladas, just confined to the top. Perhaps there is a need to go light on to-go orders? Probably not, but if that's the case they could offer green sauce in a small container. Anyway, I think most of us like more sauce than was in my order I was also surprised how light it was on the beans and rice, especially the rice. Rice is cheap, and beans are fairly cheap, too, so I did not understand why it was so light on these, especially since it's not an inexpensive dish. Also less than the menu pic. They gave a ton of chips, most of which I threw away. I would have preferred to have had more food on my plate and no chips at all. read more

First impression entering from the back patio was really nice! The atmosphere was peaceful and the music was soft. People seated were happy and engaged in quiet conversation. My son and I were seated right away. We both ordered Indian taco/popovers, my son ordered tortilla soup and soda along with it. I had a lime margarita. The margarita was light on the alcohol, didn't notice any, but it was tasty. The Indian tacos were very good, especially the frybread. The chili was not hot, which is how I like it. My son's tortilla soup was to die-for though! I will definitely order this soup next time! The nachos and salsa that was brought to the table initially was good, too. Nachos were nice and crisp! Service was excellent with the servers coming to ask us what else we needed often. It was nice to know they valued our patronage and wanted to make sure we were having a nice experience! Thank you! I and my family were coming to the area and I was tasked with finding where 6 adults and 3 kids were going to eat. I settled on this spot for the evening. I've never been to this part of AZ and read that there was a huge Mexican/Tohono O'odham influence in the way their dishes was made. Naturally, I was curious, and felt this was a great way to immerse ourselves in the local culture. The staff here was super accommodating for our large party. They sat us down very quickly, were patient with answering questions, water refills, and even brought out milder sauces for the little ones for our group. I personally got the beef with green chiles which is one of their dishes that's cooked in the Mexican/Tohono O'odham style. Absolutely loved it - it was flavorful, hearty, and super filling. Others in our party got the barbacoa and chicken mole (to name a few) and they also raved about it, which is no small feat for 9 different food palates! There's a reason why this little place always has a line waiting. Actually, there are two reasons: the food and the employees. The food is down-home Sonorense. (Northern Sonora/Sonoran Indian) Cuisine. It's not Tex-Mex, Baja CA, De Efe, etc. If you like N. Mexican food as if it came from home, this is the place for you. The employees here are just nice, seem happy to take care of their customers and serve dinner promptly. The reason for the Four stars is there really is nowhere to wait, and you really need to be ready to wait at least 20 minutes, if you're fortunate. If not, the wait can be longer. We tried twice, experienced the former, and my Chicken Mole was excellent. I'm particular about Mole, but it was the Special for the night, and I'd order it again. A Cheese Crisp w/Green Chile, two entrees, two glasses of wine, and the tab was $55 before tip. We'll be back. read more

Food took an hour, literally timed it because I had to make a flight that same afternoon. Kind of cold inside the restaurant but it's cold outside and they leave the back door open. A little rustic and they have nice artwork. Food was too sweet for me. I enjoy a savory kind of meal. My family also thought it was too sweet. Ordered their corn (seasonal) tamales, which was way too mushy, even the masa. The beans were even sweet. At this point I'm wondering if they add sugar to their food. The Spanish rice and salsa with the chips were the best part of the meal. Although, we had to add some salt to the chips and salsa. I also ordered their potato taco - it was okay. The taco had a lot of toppings, excessive amount of cabbage and cheese. They also messed up on one of our dishes, instead of the taco salad they gave us the chalupa ?? After they realized their mistake they said it would be free of charge but when the bill came out they charged us 1/2 of the full charge but... it was the Picadillas instead of the Chalupa dish. So confused. We didn't have time to make any corrections because of our flight. Chips for salsa is complimentary. They refill your water but forget the extra utensils. WOW- perhaps my best Sonoran meal in Tucson (and trust me, that could've been every meal). Was looking for a cheese crisp and this spot did not disappoint! My husband was looking for green chile tamales- but they were out of season. He ordered the chicken dish with green sauce (recommended by our server!)- and WHOA that was soooo good! I walked in and reviewed the menu for a moment, and a host came back to welcome us in. I found the ambiance to be authentic, the host to be very welcoming and patient, and the food is really authentic. I really enjoyed my meal. I got the Barbacoa, rice, and beans with a ranchero salsa (less the side of onions). The one thing I noticed missing from the table was salt and pepper; which I felt my meal was missing just a bit. After hanging with some kangaroo rats in the bushes, I decided to visit my spot. This place is a staple, combining Tohono-Tarascan and Mexican flavors into unique flavors and dishes. Sometimes it's nice to go to a restaurant that just does their own thing, not trying to win any reputation or a James Beard Award - they just want to make food to their liking and share that taste. The patio is where it's at so you can breathe in that creosote air. They have plenty of shade so you don't cook in the sun but if you choose to, that's an option as well. Once you choose a seat, they serve you housemade salsa and chips which held me over til the food came out. I ordered the chicken mole which comes with rice, beans, and tortillas. Damn, that was fire. I loved how flavorful the mole was with all the crazy amount of spices in it that somehow was all well-balanced. That shit was not bland. The rice was cooked well and not overly seasoned so it didn't overwhelm the whole dish and the beans were smooth, not grainy. They don't add lard to the beans so all your vegetarian and vegan friends can find something to gnaw on here. I even used the bed of lettuce later to nap on while I felt the filling, satisfying meal expand in my stomach. If you want real Sonoran food unique to Tucson, I would pay a visit here. I wish I had two stomachs and a self-replenishing wallet so I can have three meals at once here, but that is not the case with my one rat stomach. So bring a friend, a rat or two and come enjoy some bomb ass casual, loving food. read more

I lived in Tucson from 2004-2006 as a 24 yr old and use to come to La Indita and order the carne asada and get drunk and contemplate life. Starting off with the spiciest salsa in Tucson and fresh tortilla chips transitioning to a generous tender piece of asada and tortillas. I never figured out life but I was assured this was my favorite place in Tucson. Fast forward to 2024 and I'm here for work, have I figured out life, HELL NO!!! But La Indita is still the same, quality service, quality food, ordered the carne asada and the tamale and it was same deliciousness. Moved here from Brooklyn, have tried a lot of spots here, most of it being very meh. La Indita was great. My vegetarian wife got the chiles rellenos, which she loved.
