Came back to La Latina for lunch, and had another excellent experience. This time, we ordered the Arepa Pabellón, los tequeños, an empanada pabellón, & homemade carrot cake. The empanada was wonderful because the exterior was crsipy, and interior included plátanos, adding a sweet note to the already flavorful pabellón. The Arepa Pabellón was the perfect size, and would be great for eating on the go. All of the flavors were represented, and the yummy sauces on the table really complimented the dish. The tequeños were again excellent, the melted cheese in the middle is just heavenly. Lastly, the homemade carrot cake was divine. It was crunchy with walnuts, and had so much flavor. Since my year long stay in Atlanta without an arepa to be found, I have been craving good Latin food and of course, my favorite arepa. The first thing I did when I got to Miami was scour the web for recommendations, and La Latina had wonderful reviews and a good selection. I went purely for the menu, not expecting much else, but La Latina surprised me with wonderfully spirited and creative decor, a friendly and accommodating staff (I basically built my own arepa), and when I opened my to-go bag, I even found delicious sauces I had never had before. When I get in the mood for something Latin, my boyfriend always tags along but usually never makes comments and is never as excited as I am. But when he bit into his arepa - the Latina - he exclaimed "Wow, you should really be regretting the fact that you don't eat meat, because this is some incredible bacon!"... His last words before gobbling up the entire arepa. I built my own arepa with guayanes cheese, sweet plantains, and avacado, and the sweet/salty mix was just what I was looking for. What's an arepa you ask...it's a corn cake pocket filled with all types if things, i.e. cheese, plantains, pork, etc. They have quite a few varieties, but my fav is the pabellion (beef, black beans, plantains, cheese). We came here after the House of Roots kava bar. Although small, don't let it fool you, this place makes incredible arepas for various eaters from vegan to your average meat eater. My boyfriend had the beef arepa as did his friend. This was a nice stop along way before heading over to the Secret Garden Halloween party. I ordered the cheese and avocado arepa. It was so fresh and just mouth watering. We also shared the cheese sticks that his friend ordered. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in the area even though I'm not a fan of where the restaurant actually is. We didn't have a hard time parking but it's in an area where cars are zooming past and since its Miami, of course, certain drivers can be a bit reckless from time to time. It also didn't help that it was raining like crazy. The decorations of this place are gorgeous. It reminded me of what it was like back when I visited Mexico. The colors were pastel and beige. Everything just blended in so nicely. I highly recommend bringing a date, a friend, or even a small group before going out or even during the day when it's nice and sunny since it'll be better. You can be served by the manager, the owner or the cook and you'll still receive the same mediocre service. It's really lacking basic customer service and it seems they're moody all the time. What a wonderful little place! I actually saw this restaurant reviewed on Miami Times and I saw that they had the most authentic Venezuelan dishes in the area. I am a fool for arepas, so it didn't take much convincing to get me there! The atmosphere is very quaint - I felt like I walked into Pinterest in real life! I loved the way it was decorated. I loved how friendly the staff was to us. I LOVE that they serve beer. FOR THE WIN! The arepas were fantastic! My friend who is Venezuelan said that they were indeed the most authentic she had tasted here in Miami. I saw complaints that these were pricey - but consider the location. We had a 6 hour layover in beautiful Miami, and opted to grab an Uber at the airport and see a little of the town versus hanging in the terminal. When my first choice of restaurant was closed, we walked over to La Latina, and I am glad we did! The interior is small, but cute and there are lots of outlets for laptops, or in our case, phones dead from in-flight games, Uber beckoning and endless Yelping of good eats. We ordered a La Latina arepa and a Pernil arepa with a side of plantains. Both were delicious, but the Pernil was better -- we are meat lovers. My husband said that the meat in the Pernil reminded him a little of the sweet pork belly in Korean cuisine. The La Latina arepa could be improved with ONE more strip of bacon. We thought we would end up ordering another arepa to share, but they were surprisingly hearty despite their size. I love plantains, and these were excellent -- sweet, caramelly, moist and tender without being oily or mushy. My favorite part of La Latina was the 3 salsas. I would mix and match or add all three and the flavor combinations were always wonderful. The staff was friendly and didn't mind us hanging out for a bit to recharge. The kitschy decor, well-designed logo and menu completely reflect the personality of the owners. The only reason I'm docking a star is for price. For 2 arepas, a side of plantains and a soda, our total was around $17. That's a little on the pricey side, at least by my Houston-established standards for this type of establishment. read more

Open until 5am on weekends and kind of late weeknights, La Latina is a great alternative to the expensive slow process of getting a meal at Gigi's or Denny's. The decor is bright and welcoming, making a small space feel warm and inviting. The location's easy to miss, just park on NE 35th Street off of 2nd avenue. The first day I came in, I think I ordered one of each and still can't figure out which one is my favorite, they are all great. And the price is ridiculous: you can be well satisfied for less than $9! Don't you dare missing the nata (the most delicious one I've tried in the US) with the tequeños or the Boliarepas! It's not only great taste-wise, but the place itself is a treat inside of a treat. The decor is kitschy Venezuelan style, with a lot of personality. Even the restroom is cool! The atmosphere is really good... it just have a great vibe. It's hands down my favorite spot to grab a bite in Miami. And the place is so cool, the service by the owners that are so wonderful and charming, a great music selection always... what can I say? It's an overall great experience to go to LaLatina (even when you arrive on a Friday at 4am hungry, they make you feel like home and the quality is exactly the same like it were at noon). I've visited for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and late at night. Both by myself and with my two daughters (2 and 4yo as of today) and we are absolutely fans of this place. For kids is wonderful because they have this Tequeños and Boliarepas that are actually kind of a finger food and the taste is so nice that they LOVE it. I highly recommend it. GLUTEN-FREE!!!!!!!! Yay!!! I am always SO happy to find a restaurant that is safe for me to eat at! This is such a great place! They really care about the ingredients in their food, and they source better meat than most restaurants, making sure theirs is free of hormones and antibiotics. That's huge. One comment said it takes time for your order. Well, that's because they're making it from scratch! It's well worth the wait. I had the pelua arepa (shredded beef and gouda) and chicken empanada and my husband had the pabellon de carne and a beer and our pre-tip total was $24. Everything was fantastic, and I thought the prices were very fair for the quality of the food. I have only ever had arepas here and at K-Chapas, and here they are doughy, not crispy, which at first I thought I didn't like, but I grew to enjoy as I ate it. The empanada was perfectly crispy and delicious. The pabellon plate was generous and very good. They are open until 5AM on Fri-Sat, which is awesome! There was a lively crowd inside, which is brightly and funly decorated, and lots of people milling around outside. Despite knowing a lot of Venezuelans, it was my first close encounter with Venezuelan food. We liked it so much, that same friend and I went back on a Saturday afternoon and got arepas and beer. This is one of the best Arepa spots in Miami. As you walk in, you feel you're getting into a "South American, small rural town, convenience store" but with a hipster touch. You order your food at the cashier, sit and they'll bring your food to the table. If you're from Caracas, you will understand this type of arepa, small, rich in flavor and stuffed to the max... That's what we call "homemade arepas". Same way with the freah juices (no sugar added by the way, unless you ask for), you get to taste real fruit. The downside is that I would think they need platters, combos, something to make a good deal out of a good, rich meal. Also parking is tough. If you're a tourist, this is a MUST in Miami!!! You will get a good experience in all aspects. For first timers: order Tequeños as appetizer, two arepas: a reina pepiada and a rumbera, with a Papelón con limón juice and for desser the Tres Leches. I keep giving them second chances to see if they actually do better, yet surprisingly, they perform worse! I can't understand why they're still in business. This last opportunity time finally did it for me. 20 minute delay on delivery, for cold, old, cracked arepas, root beer that was room temperature (¿quien sirve una malta caliente?!) and failure to deliver on natural juice (papelon con limón). Not to mention they're not particularly cheap for the quality of the food. So it doesn't event fall in the "you get what you pay for" category. Unbelievably disappointing. I had a day off and joined a friend for a bite at a new place. We found this little spot on NE 2nd Avenue thats serves pretty much only Venezuelan empanadas & arepas. Everything I tried was good. It's all small sized finger foods, so you can have a light lunch or dinner and not be weighed down. I had the 'Boliarepitas' which are little fried corn balls filled with cheese. I also had a chicken empanadas, a beef empanada, and a pork arepa (pernil) that was roasted pork & a soft cheese. My friend had a 'Catira' arepa. All were delicious and ran about $6.00 each.
