Store is kinda small but offers Mexican staples, has a deli department and had a large assortment of fresh pan. I want to say that I used to go to this store years ago and the woman that owned it was there all the time and she was super nice. Not sure if she still owns it, but the ambience is not the same as it was years ago. There were two girls working the checkout and both of them were neither friendly or inviting. I am fluent in Spanish and since they didn't know they they just glared at my daughter and myself. The one girl kept giving my 12 year old daughter dirty looks. My daughter is half Mexican and clearly looks Mexican so if anything she should have been giving me the looks and not a child. These two women were also rude to the Spanish man in front of me. Don't know if I will return simply because these two women should not be working with customers. It's hard enough to go into stores where you don't know if the people speak English or not but I had no need to show that I speak Spanish fluently because they were so rude. The pan I bought was really good. Just a shame you can't find better employees. read more

This is definitely the best Mexican restaurant I have been to in Northeast Ohio. Whenever I come back to my hometown of Akron, I try to make the visit out to here. The tacos and tamales are amazing. Every time I come to visit, it seems like the business is somehow expanding. It gives me great pleasure knowing that this small mom and pop business is thriving. The supermarket is abundant with various grocery products and even a beautiful bakery case full of homemade breads and pastries. This review is for the stationary food truck in front of the supermarket. I stopped here this evening to see myself if all of the high Yelp ratings were true. With my experience today, the ratings ARE well deserved. I ordered three different tacos: pastor, barbacoa, and asada, and a tamale (tamal in Spanish). There are more types of tacos that are available on the menu, and my favorite meat here is the pastor. The pastor meat was on the rotisserie in the mainly enclosed area just in front of the food truck. On of the cooks came out of the truck after I ordered, sliced meat off of the rotisserie, and quickly grilled the meat. The tacos and tamale tasted really delicious! The barbacoa was my least favorite of the three meats. It wasn't bad; it's just that the others were that much better. I thought that the best tasting meat was the pastor. My food came out hot, and was placed on waxed paper in a basket. I took the basket of food to the dining area inside of the market. You can get to the dining area by walking to the corner of the building that's closest to the food truck. There is a door that leads to the dining area. There are ample tables and chairs. Mexican programming was being shown on the flat screen. Hot sauces, both red and green, are available on the tables. If you like your food with more kick, squeeze the red sauce onto your food, and that'll spice it up nicely. I wasn't ready for my dining experience to end so soon, so I went back and ordered two more pastor tacos! Mmmmmmmm! Lots of parking available for this business, and the food prices are very reasonable. read more

Came here for some ingredients for a Mexican dinner my husband and I are hosting tomorrow evening. We recently went on vacation to Hualtuco, Mexico and fell in love with the local cuisine. The grocery store had plenty of authentic ingredients - I was most impressed by their selection of dried chilies. It was a delight to have lunch at their store front food truck. I've never heard of pastor until we were in Hualtuco and I was excited to see they had it here! Al pastor is marinaded pork layered on a turning spit - very similar to Gyros. As such, this popular cuisine is rooted from Lebanese immigrants in Mexico. The spitted pork is shaved off per order for the tacos and typically served with sliced pineapples (which a whole one is stuck on the vertical spit on top of the pork), onions, and cilantro. IT WAS DELICIOUS. And at $1.50 per taco, an amazing deal! My husband and each got two tacos al pastor and one chicken tamale - totaling $10 for the both of us. Akron isn't exactly a beacon for International Culture and Restaurants. That's why I was very surprised to find this excellent little spanish market on Darrow Rd. La Loma is similar to a number of places that I would have found in large ethnic market like Chicago, Denver or Atlanta in my past La Loma is not a large market. But, it is extremely well stocked with lots of items that one cannot find in the major chain supermarkets in the area. The small, ethnic produce section offers lots of choices including different varieties of peppers , tomatillos, fresh garbanzo beans as well as tomatoes, onions, and garlic. The store boasts a real butcher counter where meats, which are largely pre-cut for hispanic cooking can be custom cut at your request. The counter serves a house made chorizo sausage that is really excellent. On weekends, you can partake of housemade menudo and slow roasted mexican style pork. There are numerous brands of tortillas available as well as house made crema, a rich Mexican type sour cream, and thick mole bases that you can use to make your own creations at home. Don't be afraid to ask questions at La Loma. Everyone speaks English there and is happy to introduce you to their culture through food. They are very friendly folks running a very fine little market here in Akron. I would be remiss if I didn't mention La Loma's nearly famous taco truck. Parked in front of the store, it serves up some excellent tacos, sopes, burritos and tamales at dirt cheap prices. One of my favorite Mexican dishes is Cochinita Pibil, a slow roasted, citrus marinated port butt which goes extremely well on tacos with a dash of habanaro salsa and some sweet pickled red onions. You can find everything you need to make it at La Loma! 5lbs of pork shoulder cut into two inch cube 1 lb of banana leaves (optional) 2 Tbsp achiote paste 2 tb salt 8 minced garlic cloves 3 roasted habaneros (devined,remove seeds) 1/2 cup orange juice 1/2 cup white vinegar Juice of 5 limes a Splash of tequila In a blender or a food processor,blend all wet ingredients and the achiote paste together. 3.In zip-lock bag, add the meat and marinade.shake well,marinate for 12-36 hrs. 4.in a baking pan, line it with the banana leaves (or tin foil)-you are going to be wrapping,the filling in them,so be sure to overlap them well and leave enough so the edges will overlap,making a tight package-dump the filling with marinade into the pan,wrap it with the banana leaves Put some more leaves on top,cover the whole thing with tinfoil and seal the edges,do not let any steam escape. Bake at 325 for 3 + hours. Unless you have an in ground pit that you can cook it in over live coals. read more

Best Mexican around. There's a scary little seating area behind the trailer. They sell delicious carnita by the pound inside the store on the weekends. The people couldn't be friendlier. Please give this place a try if you're feeling adventurous. If not stick to taco bell gringo. Oh forgot about pricing. $5 burritos, bigger than chipotle. I was advised La Loma was likely to have homemade tamales, a southwestern Christmas tradition. Living in Ohio now, I'm often willing to go to extreme lengths to put my hands on a dozen or two. Now my wandering days are over, La Loma's homemade tamales are as good as any I've had in the west. And at $14 a dozen, the large pork tamales are a definite value. The store is also well stocked with all the staples of Mexican cooking. Oh, then there's the taco truck. I had the barbacoa burrito, the beef was spicy and delicious. They got an amazing ice cream place opened. I love their store and the staff there is incredibly nice and welcoming. This is worth the trip for anyone they have the best tacos here. My sister and I are pretty adventurous eaters, and we both love foreign grocery stores. This was the second or third mexican grocery store i've been to in the area. I would give this place many stars alone based on the butcher. This is the only mexican butcher that I know of in Akron, and holy shit, is the food good. We've bought chorizo, al pastor, and fajitas from the butcher to make at home, and all of it was fresh and absolutely fantastic. The market itself is neat, especially if you're like me and love things like Loteria cards and seven day candles. I can't find those things anywhere else in Akron. The taco truck? It's really good. I tried the al pastor and the chorizo tacos. While the al pastor doesn't touch the al pastor at Rancheros Taqueria, they're still pretty good. This place is UNREAL. Where else can you get the world's best street tacos, unbelievable tortes on homemade bread, and the tastiest tamales on the planet for just a few bucks? Seriously, you guys need to raise your prices. A family of four can get out of here under $20 no problem, and be stuffed to the gills. The quality and flavors of your food are second to none. I love how you've taken the concept of the food truck and translated it directly to your restaurant (order and pay at a window, and take your food to the dining room to eat.) Brilliant. Their Hispanic food prepared here is absolutely incredible! Although it was a bit confusing why you can't order from the seating areas, it's definitely worth the extra effort to order upfront and seat yourself! The food is fabulous--I had the Pollo Loco that is a savory, spicy, and entirely satisfying flavor...it's like my tastebuds were doing the salsa and conga all at once! Best Mexican rice I've ever had and the Mexican beans were also very flavorful. Best salsa I've had and very good chips to go along with them--yet not the best (however I still think they're cooked fresh) by the taste. The only thing that would make me dare to take off a star is the cleanliness factor. The men's restroom was a disaster that needs to be handled better and more frequently. And I'm general the cleaning could be much better. However, the friendly service and epic food more than make up the points for a lost star! Well done! read more

Pretty good selection of canned goods, but did have some gaps. Spices also were OK, though they did have some more unusual things. Absolutely amazing food...I did an 11 day trip to Mexico for work and we visited a restaurant that had one of these "spits" for the meat and it was just as good if not better than being in Mexico. I honestly could eat there everyday...and they have a GREAT inside area where you can eat after you place your order. Just an Update on my first review. I always look forward to this authentic Mexican taco place when i'm in the Akron Area. All of the meats are great and my favorite is the Tongue. Tacos and meats are cooked to crunchy perfection. Another favorite is the Sopes. With whatever meat, it is crunchy goodness, that sometimes requires a fork.
