This is a very good French restaurant in the lobby of a very good hotel (The Wall Street Hotel). Dinner for four, everything was delicious. Standouts include the French Onion Soup, which astoundingly was vegetarian (the broth tasted very meaty), the filet mignon, the salmon, and the truffle pappardelle. There's a good variety of wines on offer, as well, and the service was excellent. Having just dined at Le Coucou for two (and having spent DOUBLE what the cost of La Marchande was for FOUR), we were reminded that good food is delicious and crave-able. This may sound obvious, but there's a reality distortion field flowing through the one Michelin starred Le Coucou, where dish after dish was tasteless. 3.5 stars La Marchande is an upscale brasserie in the lobby of the Wall Street Hotel. I did not realize that the restaurant had its own entrance from the street, and I walked into the building through the hotel and then accidentally into their lounge. I noticed that its sign had a different name, so I renavigated my way to the other end of the lobby to discover the back entrance of the restaurant. It was a bit of a weird way in, but I was able to locate my friend already sitting at our reserved table. We got settled and debated ordering from the Restaurant Week menu, though we were not as interested in the selected entree options with that special, so we just stuck with the standard list. We asked for the Parker House Rolls to start. Then, my companion ordered two appetizers for her main meal, while I ordered the salmon entree. Meanwhile, not long after, our bread appeared with both of her dishes, while we had to request my salmon specifically, since it still had not arrived over 20 minutes later. In addition, we had not ordered beverages and were sticking with water, but there were long stretches throughout the meal, where our glasses were completely empty. Also, my jacket had fallen off my chair several times, and I kept finding it on the floor, while staff members just walked around it. So, overall I would say the service was rather terrible. The food, however, was actually very good. The Parker House rolls were soft, gooey, and buttery. They were served in a skillet and topped with creamy Fromage Blanc and a sweet red onion jam that were incredibly addicting. It was a heavenly and decadent treat. Going back to the service for a second, I had not been asked how I would like my fish to be prepared, but it wound up being cooked to my perfect medium temperature. The presentation of the dish was pitiful, though. The filet was delicious, but was also miniscule for $38. In addition, it was served with a single maitake mushroom that had been overcooked to a crisp and had a burnt taste. There was also a warm, crunchy slaw composed of Caraflex cabbage and sea vegetables, which was very tasty. Meanwhile, my friend had enjoyed her Beef Tartare and French Onion Soup. Some hits and some misses. HITS: The oysters and bread were lovely. My friend enjoyed the French onion soup and the shrimp cocktail. And the charcuterie looked fab. The staff were fantastic, very on the ball. MISSES: The fries at $22 were an entire rip off and should be avoided unless on happy hour. The mushroom pasta was dry, undercooked and had a very strange combo of raw and cooked mushrooms on top. And for the price, 4 pieces of pasta was really underwhelming. The bathrooms were dirty (one had liquid all over the floor) and missing essentials (the same bathroom had no hand towels). Let me say right off the bat that the service was very strong, staff from the hostess to the bussers to the waiter was mostly pleasant. Small hiccup when the waiter tried to upsell us on the Cowgirl Ribeye ($105) even though one of us is vegetarian (and we let him know that). We came here because it is supposedly a sister restaurant to the Terrace and Outdoor Gardens uptown, a place we enjoy. I even had my birthday dinner there once. In direct contrast, we were EXTREMELY let down by La Marchande. The restaurant was entirely empty on an early Saturday evening -- we were literally the only table in the establishment. This led to an eerie ambiance. Underwhelming Beef Tartare ($20) was decently portioned but mostly flavorless. It lacked the mustardy kick of other tartares. Strange texture/moistness, too. The Roasted Cauliflower ($24) was also a disappointment. It was TINY. It was a very small sliver of cauliflower and unlike the one at abc(v), which is a hearty and substantial portion. This felt (and looked) meager. The taste was also a let down. We also ordered the French Onion Dumplings ($22) and Truffle Pappardelle ($36). The pappardelle is definitely overpriced, for the small amount of truffle shavings. The sauce also felt very flimsy and insubstantial. Disappointing. The French Onion Dumplings were the standout amongst a slate of underwhelming choices. The broth (mushroom consommé) was tasty and not oversalted. The dumplings were delicate and flavorful. Side: French Fries ($12) were chalky and tasted like they came from Costco. The dijonnaise aioli made me gag. I think it was stale. A definite SKIP. Drinks: they were fine though on the pricey side ($22-26), nothing to write home about. I would go with wine. Overall, a really disappointing experience. We skipped dessert. Tipped 14%. Enjoyed an excellent dinner at La Marchande. We had a couple of starters and two mains. The highlight for the starter was the French onion soup had an extremely umami flavor and the perfect cheese crust on top. The beef tartare was also quite tasty. For the mains we had the gnocchi and the steak. The gnocchi was a little over cooked with the inside being pretty tough and very chewy. The steak was cooked to a great medium rare. Stayed at The Wall Street hotel and sampled food at La Marchande for dinner on Day 1 and Breakfast on Day 2. For dinner, here's what we got: - Jumbo Shrimp (4/5) - this was a special for the night. Meaty and hearty shrimp in a very savory escabeche sauce. - Pull apart bread (5/5) - soft, pillowy, and so hard to resist. Get it! - Tilefish Entree (5/5) - an incredible entree. Perfectly cooked and so well balanced with the accompaniments. Would get it again! - Spicy Pork Rigatoni (3.75/5) - the pasta was not al dente and the sauce was on its way to being spicy but just missed the mark. If you like subtle, this one may be okay for you. The service during dinner was royally slow because of the ratio of servers to diners! That took the fun away and it was a birthday dinner so to be treated with some priority would've gone a long way. Nonetheless, the ambiance and food mostly made up for it. For breakfast the next morning, here's what we got: - Eggs two ways (3.5/5) - asked for eggs to be boiled but they didn't offer any flexibility hence ended up with runny yolks although I asked for it to be medium done. Asked to swap the potatoes for salad. That was not accommodated either. The English muffin, I asked for was good. - Avocado toast with a side of salmon (4/5) - this was mostly good, aside from the bone in our smoked salmon. Came here with some friends out of town. When they first recommended it, we were dubious because we live in midtown and there are tons of great restaurants nearby. But, we like to try new things so we hopped a 3 train to Wall Street and met at La Marchande. If you don't want to read the whole review, I'll just let you know it was terrific! We walked in and were greeted by the super friendly hostess and shown to our comfortable table. We walked by the bar area, which is gorgeous. The dining room is lovely, with a comfortable and lively vibe. It was about three quarters full when we were there but it never got too loud, which I appreciate. But it also wasn't a library, so having that balance is nice. Our server was terrific. He had a lot of tables and he never stopped hustling. Management, food runners and bus staff worked seamlessly to deliver a wonderful experience. We started with the Parker House rolls which were so good, we ordered more before we'd even finished the first batch! We had some warm beets which were really outstanding. I'm not a beet fan but I liked these. We also had some dumplings and I'll share a secret....save some of your rolls and then dip them in the broth after you finish the dumplings. I could have just had that for dinner and it would have still been five stars! I had steak frites for my meal and it was perfect. The fries were nice, thick fries that were crispy outside and soft and fluffy inside. Really perfect and with the horseradish dipping sauce, they really stood out. I had a couple (okay maybe three) rye old fashioneds and each was excellent. The bartender knows what he's doing. For dessert we had some tiramisu and creme brulee and everything was terrific. Tucked away in the Financial District, it's elegant without being stuffy, and everything from the atmosphere to the service made us feel like we were in good hands from the start. We began our evening with the roasted beet salad, which was thinly sliced, perfectly balanced, and so fresh--it set the tone for the rest of the meal. We also shared the French onion dumplings, which were a creative and delicious twist on the classic soup. Think deep, savory flavor in a bite-sized form--so good we could've had another round. For the main course, I went with the filet mignon. It was incredibly tender, cooked exactly to temperature, and generously seasoned without overpowering the flavor of the meat. The portion was just right--filling but not over the top. We rounded out the meal by sharing a few sides: crisp green beans, perfectly golden French fries, and incredibly smooth mashed potatoes. Each one was flavorful and clearly made with care. Dessert was a full-on treat. We decided to go all in and share a few options: the strawberry tiramisu (light and refreshing), the chocolate soufflé (rich, airy, and deeply chocolatey), and the crème brûlée (classic, with the perfect crackle on top). I ended up going to La Marchande, twice, during the week of October 21st, on a Tuesday and on a Thursday, 2024! The food and service here is delicious! It's one of the best restaurants I have ate at in the Financial District. My colleague and I had reservations, on both days, at around 12:00 P.M. When we walked in, there was no wait time. The team member took us back to our booth area. It was so quiet and the restaurant is stunning! We ended up sitting in the same booth area both times that we ate at La Marchande. We typically had a party of 6 on Tuesday and 5 on Thursday. The service was outstanding! We had a few team members assist our table with refilling our drinks and bringing our order to our table. The first time I visited La Marchande, I ended up getting the Filet Mignon, Medium-Well cooked, no sides. We did order a few appetizers such as the French Onion Dumplings (Truffles, Gruyere, Mushroom Consommé) and the Brioche Pull Apart bread (Scallion Crème Fraiche). The team member brought out the appetizers first. The French Onion Dumplings was amazing!!! We ended up ordering this again on our second visit. This was actually recommended by one of the team members from La Marchande. I am so glad we ended up ordering it! The Brioche Pull Apart Bread was delicious! The bread was so soft and warm. The crème was really good! The steak was delicious! It was heavily spiced though! On my second visit, I tried something different. I ended up getting the La Marchande Burger instead. Had an amazing breakfast here ! I had trouble finding it though - it says it's on Wall St but the entrance is actually on Water St. It's inside the Wall Street Hotel so you can also get to it from the hotel lobby. I got to try their bread, chestnut veloute, duck egg raviolo, Halibut and wagyuu short rib. The short rib was just ok, felt like it was a little dry but the flavors where nice. The fish though, WOW WOW WOW I looved this dish. The place if beautiful and the presentation of the dishes was really nice. We were here for Mother's Day lunch and the experience was just okay. We were seated, given the menus, and then for ten minutes no one checked on us. We saw other tables being served but those servers never looked at us so we didn't wave them down. Eventually someone came, and we had our drinks ordered. The menu's $95 per head and a small buffet's included. The buffet food was generally okay but some of the food wasn't fresh, for example, the ham was dry and hard, and the fish roes on the eggs were also dry and hard. The smoked salmon and prawns were okay though. I also tried the ceviche but to be honest was a little hesitant because it didn't look very fresh. For some reason there was a noticeable shortage of tongs at the buffet table, we had to grab tongs from other dishes to get some of the food, and there were no spoons to get condiments. The shortage of cutlery was also felt at the table. We had the appetizers, and then our cutlery were taken away, and they were not replenished. I couldn't find our server for the longest time so we had no cutlery to eat the entrees with, and eventually grabbed from the next table. This is rather unacceptable for a hotel restaurant. The entrees were fine, the usual brunch fare. The drinks were also mixed well. After the entrees, our cutlery were of course taken away, and again they were not replenished. Housed within the 18th Century Stock Exchange Building, La Marchande is indeed a gorgeous place. We breakfasted here recently and found our selections delightfully flavorful. Juice is fresh-squeezed. I ordered a most delicious Avocado Toast with Smoked Salmon. My companion enjoyed his Eggs Benedict too. Our server, Oscar was attentive. Do know that when offered "still" water, you will receive bottled water at a price ($11). If you are fine with TAP WATER, be clear about it. Also, I asked for an Americano coffee with an Extra Shot of espresso. I received a cup of something that looked like poorly stirred instant coffee that was very weak. At $8 a cup, that was a miss. All in all, our party enjoyed their food and as long as communication is clear and the coffee ordered is simple, you should be fine. read more

Who knew a cafe accepts reservations - wow hate that - they should be moved to this restaurant. Anyway, I was sat in what I later was informed was the bar section of LA Marchande & was able to take my two quick biz calls here over an order of fries. I was bummed because the fries here weren't the same yummy, skinny fries from the cafe side even though they share the same kitchen! I was so excited to order fries just to be disappointed seeing they were different. The mustard sauce served on the side was interesting yet nice. Loved the ambiance and crowd. The Christmas Feast was a special menu that started with the Pull Apart Bread which was a great start as always. We began with two different kinds of oysters and parkerhouse rolls with crème fraiche and anchovy butter-fantastic! We each had something different for our entrees. We came here for Valentine's Day and I don't think it's worth it for the price. First, we were sat on top of other people, so we asked to be moved to a more private table that was available. The hostesses pushed back just saying that there was nowhere else, when there was an empty table in front of us. We wrote it off that maybe they weren't aware of the table being empty, but it just wasn't dealt with well. The service was excellent and the waitstaff was so kind. The food was ok. We started with the milk bread, we've had better elsewhere, the beet arugula salad, which was fine, and the French onion soup dumplings, which were probably the best part of the meal. Then we got the duck, which was delicious, and the steak, but it was overcooked and barely edible. The desserts left something to be desired and were too tart or too bitter. Overall it was disappointing for a dinner at that price, there are so many other places in the city where the food justifies the cost. That all being said, we stayed at the hotel and had breakfast here the next morning. It was delicious and I would absolutely go back for brunch! We got the sausage and egg brioche sandwich and the eggs in yogurt with sourdough with the duck fat hasbrowns on the side. We were licking our plates it was so good! I visited La Marchande as part of a birthday celebration for a friend. It was in a neutral geographic location for a pretty diverse group that came from across New Jersey, The Bronx, Brooklyn and Long Island. The restaurant is classically beautiful and fits the French Brasserie aesthetic. It felt warm on a cold night. The reservation was made for 7pm which helped the drivers find street parking for free. We started our meal with a taste of almost all of the available appetizers (Endive & Pork Belly, Warm Oysters and The French Onion Dumplings). Everything was great but judging by the reactions, the dumplings were the hit! Meanwhile, someone in our party ordered some sort of Orange Wine which I wasn't a fan of. Instead of taking any further sips of that I tried the "Nevermore" cocktail which I felt was really refreshing and then I ordered a Sauvignon Blanc when our main dishes arrived. Speaking of mains, I ordered the Grilled Ahi Tuna with an accessory of Fried Rice Pilaf which had a nice spicy kick to it! In fact we ordered a few of that side. We also ordered some portions of the scallops for the table to enjoy and that the group did! I had a bite of the hanger steak but I think I might've liked my fish better (?). To be honest, I couldn't think of anything that tasted bad (The Orange Wine might've been a matter of personal taste). Bottom line: Take a visit. It's stellar French cuisine. Salmon was good - but honestly, I liked the side veggies best on the plate and wish there were more. The crème brûlée was a surprise star. Wish we had skipped the cocktails. Stop by to try their Happy Hour. HH cocktails - interesting and delicious, we tried all 3 of the Apetirif and I enjoyed all 3! (Velvet is very sour FYI) HH food - kinda okayed. Blue Crab & Scallop Fritter - felt that it's a scam that $20 for 3 balls that doesn't taste much of crab and scallop. Mushroom Spring Roll - it's okay but for $12 it is not really HH deal. After trying the above, instead of trying more food dishes on the Happy Hour Menu, we just ordered a Hanger Steak (rare) from regular dinner menu to try since we aren't so hungry. And it might be the best Hanger Steak ever! Feel like it's Sous Vided but I'm not sure. Very balanced and tender. No blood but beautiful color within and perfection cooked in Rare temp. La Marchande is a beautiful addition to the financial district, which seems to lack good places to eat. To start off, the service is phenomenal. Our waiter was just wonderful, and the whole staff seem to care a lot about keeping things upscale. I had the Sage 75 to drink which was wonderful: very refreshing, quite strong, and really hit the spot. Don't be alarmed: it's not super sage-y! To eat, we tried a variety of items: -Pull Apart Milk Bread: iconic, I really enjoyed this. It's not outstanding but is worth trying. -Onion Rings: really can't go wrong, they're tasty but be warned-the aioli it's served with is quite spicy! -Cauliflower Tarte Tatin: I enjoyed the variety of flavors here-some sweet, some savory, some....curry? -Cheesy Cavatelli: the dish I was most excited about but was quite let down by. It really just needed some more salt! Overall, I quite enjoyed this meal and the environment. I could give a 3-star review if the prices were half of what they are, but this is place is way, way over-priced. The food is very mediocre, with descriptions that sound far fancier than the tastes that are actually delivered. It'd have been better if they tried harder at bringing out the natural flavors of the ingredients with more plain approaches; at least that'd be honest. Instead, what comes out are dishes in which the preparation clashes with rather than enhances the featured ingredient, and the main flavor is --- salt. The service is also painfully slow. The food was lovely. The space is marvelous. The service, although the waitress was super nice, was a little lacking. My fiancé and I went for a late dinner and were welcomed with a smile and a cute table. We each ordered an appetizer, entree, and dessert. We loved the food but it simply took FOREVER. Decided to have breakfast here while staying at The Wall Street Hotel. Reservation for was 10am...and they closed at 10:30, so right under the wire. The server was great and very attentive. Going out of my comfort zone, ordered the Oeufs En Cocottes which may have been great if I was ok with runny egg whites. For some reason, it just turns me off. And the dish was overall pretty bland.
