Food is average, nothing special. A great place to go if you needed a place for a large group.

First time going....When I first walked into the restaurant I smelled sewage in the entrance instead of food. Which made me want to make a uturn and go to subway. My husband convinced me to stay. While walking past someone's table to get seated someone was complaining about their food. Again I should have taken the uturn to subway. While we were sitting there I scrolled through the yelp reviews and took the advice of some of the reviewers and passed on eating the refried beans because it made them sick. The food was ok.... the rice was different... and I passed on beans. Leaving the restaurant the sewage smell hit me again and they will never have to worry about seeing me again. This is why I love eating in large cities ..... the health dept usually have their ratings in the door. With that sewage smell it makes me wonder when was the last time the health dept was there. read more

La Mesa is a pretty good Mexican restaurant. It seems that every town has one, and Lansing is no exception. Both times I have been here I have gotten very good service, and good, reasonably priced food. While La Mesa is not an exceptional restaurant by Mexican restaurant standards, I would say it's definitely on par with most of the sit-down Mexican places you'll find around. My meals both times were filling (brought some home one time) and tasty. Not too spicy (I could use a little more spice, usually), but I bet you could ask for it to be ramped up if you wanted. Lansing really lacks restaurants, so I am sure I'll be back. However, with Legends so close, I am going to frequent that area more. read more

Have been to this restaurant several times and always a pleasant experience with good service. The food tastes good and there are plenty of choices. They usually have a nice drink special with the margaritas. My favorite part. We usually have a group of eight or more people and they are always very accommodating for our group. Be careful if you have food allegies or don't like hostile order takers. Went for take out for a terminal elderly gentleman. It was what he wanted. I ordered what I was told to order, he is a regular customer. The La Mesa guy taking the order argued. Evidently it is not on the weekend menu. I told him I needed the same items in a weekend available meal. He became obviously very angry. He argued and started throwing menus and order tablets around. This was obvious and I was upset by his obvious hostility. I am allergic to pork, it makes me very ill and miserable. I ate there years ago, chicken tacos, and discovered they had lard (pork fat) in the flour tacos. I asked if they were still made with pork fat. La Mesa order taker said "No, you order chicken you get chicken". I asked he please double check with the cooks since the problem previously had been in the taco shells. Response was "No" and he wouldn't double check. Really? How very, very rude. Asked the lady at check out when I paid for the meal the same question about the pork and she did check with the cooks. She said they don't always understand. Really? This is Kansas and I speak very clearly. Told her, and I mean it, that the attitude was not appreciated and they should have someone who does understand interacting with the customers. Their lack of caring should not be made my problem. Didn't eat my part of the meal. I don't trust they didn't lie to me about the pork and I can't afford to be sick while taking care of my sick family, so I can't speak to the food quality. read more

I think this is the sister restaurant of the other La Mesa's around KC, but have not been to any, so don't quote me. This place is excellent. The best part by far is the service. Lunch they have your order taken and the food out within 10 minutes, every time. Dinner, a tad longer, but still amazing service. The decor is nothing special, but it is very clean. They do have southwest hand painted chairs which I guess is nicer than the vinyl clad, metal framed numbers in most places. The food is pretty solid. It is not the best Mexican food I have had, but could be the best value. A large, full plate of food can be had for less than $10. I have tried all the basic dishes and they are all solid. So if you are looking for a good chiminichanga and/or in a hurry, this is your place. read more

I have been coming to this restaurant for many years and I have never been dissatisfied. Food is great and the service is excellent as well! Always greeted by a smiling face and there are servers that remember you and come over and say hello! The place is always packed on Fridays and Saturday's and they're open late! We always have a good time here and I've gone there for a few birthdays as the fried ice cream is awesome! Taco Tuesday is such a bonus too! read more

The food here was basic no thrills American Mexican food. Nothing to write home about. We were most upset at the fact that the staff were not wearing face masks properly, nor were they concerned about social distancing as every table was filled. Patrons were walking around without masks as well. Definitely not protective of the general health during the COVID-19 pandemic. I'll won't be coming back here until the pandemic is over, or if I find a better more authentic Mexican restaurant in the area. read more

I have been to so many Mexican location including running one for 6 years and this is by far the best cheese dip ever! I've never been able to find a quesadilla with ground beef without special ordering it and getting a scowl from the server. Our waiter was so friendly and attentive! The margarita was seriously strong so drink at your own risk but well worth the money!! I'd recommend highly before the other place in town! read more

Hello Mexican Food!!! I could definelty eat mexican food every single day. It makes my belly happy. So lets get to the actual review. First this restuarant has fast service. They are almost immediately at your table with chips and salsa and the waiters quickly follow after. If I were you I would start off with the queso or the guac, either are delicious but I have to admit I would get the queso. Ok lets get to the entrees and drinks. First since we are eating mexican food lets get the margarita and not just the normal get the top self, way better. Then for dinner we can go with a couple of choices. I have about three that I rotate between but I have definitely tried more. The taco salad is very good. You know how you usually get this meal and the shell is still dripping in grease, well this is well dried off and very tasty. It comes with sour cream, guac, tomatoes, cheese sauce, lettuce, and your choice of beef or chicken, both good. Also the alcopoco enchiladas (sp is probably wrong sorry) are very good. They come with crab and shrimp, cheese inside, and I substitute the red sauce for verde (green ) sauce. Very good and makes it a bit spicier. Also comes with a side of rice, sour cream, guac. My third favorite is the chicken quesidillas. They are stuffed with tons of peppers, both red and green, and lots of chicken and cheese. They are never over cooked and always a little crispy on the outside, just perfect. If you are in Leavenworth for the day definitely check this place out, you will not be disappointed. read more

I was in the area for business and stopped in. Epic mistake. Food was inedible and that was after waiting almost an hour for it to be brought to the table. Before I tell about how bad the food is here let me give a little background on myself. I have been in culinary for about 10-12 years now. Working as a head chef or kitchen manager in all establishments. Nothing less then 3 and 4 star restaurants. This includes restaurants at 4-5 star lodges such as Keystone ski resorts. So I like to think I am a little experienced in the food industry Now to the actual review! We came in ordered food for my wife, kids, and myself. What we received was rubbery chicken and crusty dried out rice and beans. We were not even waiting a 5-10 minutes until our entire order was brought to the table. Chicken takes at the very least 6-7 minutes to fully cook. So this seemed a little impossible. The lettuce was browing, rice was dried out, and the beans well you could take a pinch of the beans (I literally did infront of the manager) and it crumbled like powder. All signs of being reheated and cooked in a microwave. I asked for the manager and asked a simple question which turned out into the manager fighting for himself. I asked him how old the food was and pointed out it looks smells and tastes like it was cooked in the microwave. In return the manager did NOT deny it. Instead he admitted the rice and beans were cooked early in the morning and reheated in a microwave. With my experience in food business, any restaurant worth their salt makes these side dishes alone fresh each shift. A shift being for lunch and for dinner. The manager then continued on telling me this is how jose peppers does their food and he knew the owners personally. First and foremost I'm not going to a fast food mexican "restaurant". I am going to La Mesa as it is a legitimate restaurant who claim to serve fresh food. For 30 minutes the manager kept trying to explain how food is suppose to be re-heated in the microwave... Sad. I was very nice and told him we will not back and I wished the best for his business. Still as I was walking out the guy would not stop explaining himself. Both the La Mesa's in Saint Joseph and Omaha serve great fresh food. If you the manager read this please remember how these sides should be served. You use a steamer! Not a microwave. Any chef or even cook knows you do not microwave food in a place of business. Funniest part of all this about a minute before we received the food a friend texted us and told us to get out. We asked why later and she stated her and her family recently got FOOD POISONING after eating there.... read more

I was in the mood for Americanized Mexican food and this hit the spot! Right off the bat, the chips were super warm and crunchy. I ordered a chicken chimichanga which was exactly the deep-fried cheesy goodness I was looking for. We didn't wait too long for anything and the waiter was attentive (though we did come in at 2:30 on a Saturday, so take that for what you will). My only criticism is I ordered a Diet Coke and it turned out to be a Diet Pepsi, which for me is just not the same. A fairly minor slip up in an otherwise lovely lunch. Very good Mexican food with a nice variety of selections on the menu. It would be better if the combination plates came with both rice and beans, instead of just rice. The number 11 beef enchiladas were tasty and had a good sauce on top. The owners are from Jalisco, Mexico so it is authentic. The bar looked like it had a really good variety of tequilas. After exhausting my search for decent Mexican food in or near this town (I'm from CA and my godparents are Mexican; I have relatively high standards), this is the best to offer. Really great service, inexpensive compared to quality, and the closest to authentic anywhere nearby. The only thing I don't care for here is their cheese sauce, it's weird. Everything else, though, has been yummy, fast, and more than enough to fill my tummy. My fiance and I frequent this place several times a month. read more

I brought my family who was visiting about a week and a half ago. Some of the servers were wearing masks but ours and another were not. They need to be doing this. First Mexican place I have been to locally since moving here that I have actually enjoyed. Salsa was perfect, tamales were wonderful. Service was fast, price was great. If you want great Mexican food this is your place. If you want knock off mexican -Tex-mex go to Jose Peppers. read more

Frozen Mexican food you microwave is way better than this... sad excuse of a Mexican restaurant. I would think they would want to improve the quality of their food constantly.... Im out in lancing visiting with my daughter for a few days I must say the restaurant was very nice looking but the food an service was horrible our chips were cold the salsa taste like regular tomato sauce I ordered a number one an it looked like they just threw a bunch of ground beef on a plate along with some "enchilada sauce" that was cold an also tasted like it can fresh out of the can I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone matter fact the owners should probably hire a new team of cooks this place gets one star for the interior of their establishment read more

Incredible service on 1/28 -- our waiter was there with anything we might have wanted, before we wanted it. Unfortunately, we both got sick from the refried beans. I ordered a bunch of different things all together, so wasn't sure what it was. Then my wife had the leftover refried beans the next day, same deal. No military discount. With tip, our tab was $49.69 for a family of 5 (3x small kids), no drinks, so not bad. read more

My husband and I always have a great experience here. The food is cheap and delicious, and the staff has always been attentive. We were just there this afternoon and had the steak fajita salad...
