I purchased a ~$200,000 Storyteller Overland van from La Mesa RV (Fremont), built on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis, and this has been one of the most frustrating ownership experiences I've ever had. Even the purchase process should have been a warning sign. While finalizing paperwork, the finance manager at La Mesa RV openly acknowledged that issues often "fall through the cracks" between Mercedes and Storyteller, and then aggressively pushed an extended warranty--going so far as to say it was "stupid" not to buy it after spending this much on a van. At the time, it felt inappropriate. In hindsight, it feels like a clear warning of what was to come. From the very first drive home, I started getting battery warning lights. Within a month, the van broke down completely on a trip to Los Angeles and had to be towed after going into limp mode. I was told the battery was replaced and everything was fixed. It wasn't. Since then, the van has repeatedly failed to start, including being completely dead after sitting unused. I've now had to call Mercedes roadside assistance multiple times, most recently being told to let the engine run to recharge the battery--only for it to die again immediately after turning it off. At one point, even roadside support noted flickering interior lights suggesting deeper electrical issues. What's most frustrating is that none of this was disclosed upfront: * La Mesa RV never mentioned these known battery drain issues * Storyteller Overland never explained that the vehicle cannot sit unused for more than 1-2 weeks without requiring a battery tender or disconnect system * Mercedes-Benz has not taken ownership of diagnosing or resolving what now appears to be a systemic electrical problem Only AFTER I started digging did I hear from a Storyteller representative that these issues are widely known and tied to vans sitting for extended periods before sale. So let me summarize: * I paid ~$200K for a vehicle I cannot rely on * I've spent 20+ hours troubleshooting and coordinating service * I've had to tow it and call roadside assistance multiple times * I still do not have a functioning, dependable vehicle * And no one--not La Mesa RV, not Storyteller, not Mercedes--has taken responsibility or offered a real solution Instead, I've been bounced between companies, each implying it's someone else's problem. This feels like a system where the dealer sells it, the manufacturer builds it, Mercedes supplies the chassis--and when something goes wrong, nobody owns the outcome. At this point, I genuinely believe I was sold a defective vehicle without proper disclosure. If you're considering buying from La Mesa RV, a Storyteller Overland van, or anything built on a Mercedes Sprinter platform, do your homework on these battery and electrical issues first. In March of 2025, all the stars lined up for me to buy my 2025 Sprinter EKKO. I had been going to RecVan on a regular basis for almost a year looking at the Sprekko's to keep myself motivated toward this goal which, I thought would be in the beginning of 2026 when I retired. Fortunately, it happened sooner and I am loving my early retirement gift to myself. Prior to my purchase, sales reps David J. and Anthony were supportive, understanding of my goal and not pushy for a sale. I would ask question after question and they would stay patient and informative. The day that I finally made the purchase, they were the first ones there to congratulate me and I felt their honest excitement for me, not just a sale for them. To this day, whenever I go to RecVan with a question or concern, they pleasantly greet me at the door and ask how everything is going. Then they complete the visit with, "call or stop by if you have anymore questions". Since then, I have had the typical dialing in period of new RV's. I know this happens from previous experience so, I wasn't surprised when things needed adjustments or fixing. I have found it usually takes about a year to totally dial in a new rig. This is where this experience is SO much different from my previous RV purchase. Sona, at the front desk, always greets me friendly and does her best to help me connect with the correct person for that visit. Frankie and Ramaro have been fantastic at getting my needs met. Yes, Winnebago is slow with warranty work, but that is no fault of RecVan. Frankie makes sure everything keeps moving forward smoothly and Ramaro has been wonderful as my service man. He keeps me informed of what is going on, explains things well, does a great job and is dependable. I have read some poor reviews about the sales reps and service here once a rig is purchased here, but my experience has been the complete opposite. They make me feel like family! Finance office uses illegal "Tied Selling" tactic where a lower interest rate I was approved for was held hostage to the condition that I buy the extended warranty (for 11K !!!). It is generally illegal for a dealer to explicitly state or imply that you must purchase a service contract, extended warranty, or any other aftermarket product as a condition to get the auto loan or the interest rate for which you are already approved. It was a while ago, I always had a bad feeling about it, so I looked it up. They should be reported. My neighbor also bought form them, same experience. Oh and their mobile service is a joke. So much run around and doesn't want to come out. Even when the fix is under warranty. Every time I have to involve manager and beg them. As for service dept in Davis CA, I had an expensive Benchmade hunting knife disappear when I left my rig for over a month to get the battery charging fixed (didn't work driving off the showroom floor). Service manager (Aaron) had no reaction, as if it was a normal everyday report. After a few iterations of their incompetence in getting my batteries to charge, I finally went to the forums and told them exactly what part to replace. Should have just lemon law'd the damn thing, it was in the shop for almost 2 billing cycles until I told them to order the part that takes 5 minutes to replace. read more

We've had a DIY campervan for over 5 years and definitely had fun with it. Our kids want the old van, so we've been thinking about upgrading. We went to RecVan in Fremont just for fun, poked around for about 4 hours. Anthony Gooden was super patient with us, walking us through models, showing us what's available, never pushing. Just answering questions. After we left, we still had questions and still not committed to purchasing anything from RecVan. Was actually considering buying a used camper van from a friend. Reached out to other dealers and private sellers. We were suprised how many people were selling various units just in our neighborhood! Over the span of a week, Anthony answered all of our questions over text. Responded to every request for pictures from every conceivable odd angle. He never pushed for us to come back. Never reached out with a pushy text. Just politely answered questions whenever we bombarded him with them. We went back with a plan to essentially take apart the unit we considered purchasing. We pushed buttons, pulled shore power, turned on appliances (AC and Microwave at the same time!) and watched the house battery drain. I poked at screens while my wife was test driving. We turned alternators off/on. We tested battery recharging. We did everything but take a dump and a shower. We ended up buying a gently used unit with a few small issues here and there. During orientation and pickup, Nikki did a great job walking us through the unit. She, Randy, Jon, and Frankie did a great job tackling the due bill items while we were wrapping things up in the office with Mark. Not everything was addressed (yet), but we wanted the unit home ASAP to start getting to know it. Nikki said if anything was awry, to text her. We found a little thing when we got home. We texted her late at night figuring she'd respond the next day. Woke up in the morning to see she responded while we were asleep. Call us old fashioned, but I trust that the things they say they'll resolve will get resolved. The team has been great so far. Update: I almost forgot to update. The thing that wasn't addressed, a faulty LED panel on our awning, was taken care of a few days later by Ramaro Sanchez from mobile service. I had read the reviews on service, and thought I could buck the trend, but nope! Took the van in to the Mesa RV / RecVan Davis repair facility location for critical recall work 7 days ago. Ahead of this, the service center ordered the recall parts (plus a few other parts to address some warranty defects) and then when the parts arrived, they contacted me to bring the van in, which i did a week ago. They asked me if i would be ok leaving the van over the weekend for 1 week. I agreed to this, then didn't hear anything back from them. Sent a message to check in with the service rep on Tuesday, and was informed that the van "We have your unit in service and w orking on it"...then followed up again today and learned "Sorry Don, my apologies when I told you your unit was in the shop I got you mixed up with another Tiffin, you actually went in the shop today and I will keep you posted I am so sorry". We then spoke on the phone and learned that others who pushed to have their units in time for Memorial Day got put further up in service queue. We agreed to give them Friday to complete the work, but after some back and forth discussion was given the option to drive from Concord (where we live) to pickup the van in Davis tomorrow (Friday) either partially fixed or not fixed at all...and then i could bring it back and drop it off again in Davis after the weekend. --- The recall issue could cause up to a fatal accident due to sudden engine power shutoff risk issue --....I told them to keep the van and fix it correctly, even if my long weekend plans are now ruined. I asked for more info, but was told that she and here manager are off until next Wednesday...another week! (...so they can enjoy their long weekend...) and that i won't hear anything back until the rep / manager returns from vacation. I plan to update this again when i learn more. Not good that this place if one of the few options for service. One other note: DO NOT leave the dealership if you sense any electrical / battery issues. This place does not check to ensure the vehicle (Mercedes Benz OEM) battery is healthy... these units sit for long periods of time as they are being built out and transported...and the battery dies a slow painful death that may or may not fully surface until it's to late and the result may leave you stranded in Reno with a dead rig...which you will then need to take your sprinter into Mercedes to get the battery analyzed and replace (usually on your own dime)...i blame Tiffin for this for not keeping a trickle charger on the battery, and I blame La Mesa / Rec Van for not caring enough to check the battery system before selling defective vans to their extremely high dollar paying customers...and for not admitting fault or for not being able to help me connect the dots on why my van was acting so weird, stalling, idiot lights coming on, limp mode...etc. New van, 1 week old, my problem. This could have been easily avoided. Please be careful, and hope your initial voyage in your rig is better than mine was. read more

My honey passed away on February 5, 2025. In the last several years we talked about what I would want to do with the house if he passed away b4 me. I told him I would sell the house immediately and buy a RV and live not tied to any one place. So after about eight months of being alone I started looking at RV's and Trailers, I made the decision to buy a RV. With the help of family and friends I was able to put everything in storage and sold my house in one day and escrow closed in seven days. After looking at a few dealerships I saw nothing I liked so I was about ready to head to Sacramento when my daughter called me and said she thinks she found what I'm looking for and sent me a few pictures. I agreed with her and asked her to make an appointment and the next day we was in Fremont at La Mesa RecVan buying my brand spanking new 2026 Thor Chateau 31H. We met OJ, one of their sales guy and believe me when I tell you he knows his stuff, thank goodness. I must admit shopping for a vehicle has never been a fun experience for me until now. Once my decision was made they scheduled an orientation to learn about this huge massive home on wheels I'm going to be living in. After a few delays on my part I finally made it there for the orientation and I was very happy to see this huge red bow on it and a sign congratulating me and welcoming me to the La Mesa rec band family that was very touching. I walk into the lobby and Nikki, the Orientation Technician was there to greet me and teach me. And that she did. She went through a intense orientation a bit overwhelming if I do say so myself. I would actually recommend if your buying this for yourself you should bring a friend to help you understand. Oh don't get me wrong Nikki did everything right it is I who has a very bad memory. It's unfortunate to read that there was some kind of oddity with the whole "selling of the warranty" issue. One of the first things I was told when signing my paperwork after being approved was that La Mesa RecVan doesn't make money on sales of each unit they sell but they make money on the warranties they sell. Interesting enough I purchased a new $160,000.00 dollar RecVan that immediately after drive away from the store needed multiple things repaired such as a dashboard glove box, the back doors to the RecVan, and even a piece of the front quarter panel flew off before we reached our home. I called immediately and everyone was so nice saying they could take care of it...but when I called to let them know they stated that it's all covered under warranty. To my surprise I didn't realize that within the first 24 hours I would be using the very product that makes them money after the purchase. The customer service after that was that each employee had their hand in giving the run around about how they can help then they pass you to someone else who just stalls the time...here we are a week later... vehicle is still in their possession but nothing is getting fixed. It's sad to have looked for almost a year and visiting LaMesa several times due that year, right before buying I was visiting the store two or three times a week working with the same people only to find out a couple of days before buying they raised the prices by five grand. No good customer service and they have easily soured our experience in stealing the joy of such a long awaited purchase. read more

We shopped all over the country for this specific make and model. We came up from Southern CA to meet with David Jimenez and he met us at the door and had the RV ready for us to look at. He allowed us to take it for a drive and encouraged us to each drive the rig on both the city street and freeway. We are a retired couple in our 70's and he gave us as much time and his attention as we needed. He is very knowledgeable and there was no pressure. We drove up from home so we were not going to be able to finalize the purchase that day. We gave them a 1,000.00 deposit and they held it for us for two weeks until we could book a flight to pickup our new RV! They had it all cleaned up and we met Josh for the walk through and he was also great! He took his time and explained everything to us. No rush and had to go over a few things a couple times. We left with big smiles and took three days to make the trip home. Everything went well and worked well. They both gave us their cell numbers and encouraged us to call with any questions or problems. Overall a good experience. We are new to RVs. We bought a slightly used, late model Entegra Ethos 20t. David Jimenez was a very knowledgeable and helpful sales specialist. The sales managers were easy to work with. The prices seemed fair, but it is a good idea to figure out what you want and do your research and comparisons to make sure you get the features that you want at a price that is fair. Large selection of Sprinter and Promaster based camper vans, new and used. Not a place for giant RVs or trailers - a good thing for Class B buyers . I have a Promaster and went in to shop for accessories, which they don't have, but I was Impressed by the selection and inventory. I hadn't seen the "pop top" models with sleeping areas up a ladder. I wanted to share some actionable things you guys can do to avoid picking up a lemon car with tons of issues and repairs needed. This will likely save you 100+ hours of your time. Before buying, find an official Facebook group for the specific model you're looking at - search the car's model and there should be a group for owners and prospective owners. Join it, and go to the "Files" section of the group. The community is usually very good at posting checklists and other info here. Find a pickup checklist to bring to the dealership when picking up, and MAKE SURE EVERYTHING ON THE LIST IS PROPERLY WORKING. Do not accept the van until everything is fixed and working properly. It's a long list of things that can be delivered broken so the salespeople hate it, but it will save you a ton of headache. The delivery people at Rec Van have no idea how to properly deliver a car and ensure it's functioning correctly. I promise you, you want to go to your pickup appointment with a checklist. Ensure things are fixed BEFORE accepting the van and signing the contracts. We made the mistake of just accepting delivery without scrutinizing everything - huge mistake. They delivered the car with tons of small things that were broken, including multiple leaks that the Davis, CA service center wasn't able to repair properly after multiple trips. I found out about this group at a local show and got excited about their selection and the honest sales team. I found a van I love, but that is where things go south. The person showing me the vehicle had no clue how many of the features worked. She did not know how the awning worked and to this day I still have not figured out how to properly store the legs For example, when I got home, the toilet paper hold had broken off. while she was showing me the vehicle she had told me that it did not come with one. There is also a thick glue type substance on the step I'm having trouble getting off. They only gave one key to the outside shower and when it was supposed to come with a half a tank of Gas, it only had 8 gallons, which is not half of 24, and it had not been detailed you can tell the areas that were not even attempted to be cleaned like the roof and door jams. What was worse was while driving it I began to smell poop, finding out that they had not sanitized and cleaned the bathroom. it should not have even been used as this was a new vehicle. Today, I found out that they did not even properly set up my registration something I am sure will take a lot of time to figure out. Sadly, there is no response when emailing or calling. I tried many times when I bought this in November. The only emails I got from them were automated ones that when responding to them go no where. Thankfully I have been able to get some little questions answered by ROADTREK the makers of my van, but it would have been nice to have the dealership as a resource. I am also at a loss for where to take it when it does need major servicing, or to deal with issues that always arise in RV's like grout cracking and other maintenance things. I guess my advice for anyone buying here is that because the price is really good, focus on the vehicle you like but do some good research for yourself and don't expect any service. I would also go in with your financing all lined up unless you want to be sitting for a long time while they run your credit through a half a dozen banks. I ended up financing through my credit union and am very happy about that choice. read more

Now that I have had professionals fix my Mercedes/Thor Travel Van, it was sold to me defective. During my walk through with Nikki she found that the awning was not working properly. ( It was in fact the motor was defective.) We never got to the AquaHot screen, it was replaced by a Rec Van technician that it was taken out of a smaller van and was modified to fit my van. It was damaged while on the Rec Van lot. ( I had professionals replace it with the proper AquaHot screen). I would not ever ever buy another van or RV from these people. All they are interested is your money, and not willing to take responsibility for their Vans or RV's. Poor customer service and again the communication is poor. read more

We had a fairly easy no stress experience here buying our Revel. 5 star also because of a couple additional things they did like have our van put on a truck when brought up from San Diego rather than getting the added miles put on the van by driving it. Also when we pointed out a few issues that needed to be dealt with on our new van at pick up they were dealt with before we left the lot (rather than us having to follow up later.). We didn't have a very good experience at this dealership unfortunately, went in to buy a van, was quoted a set price for the van that was on the display, told them that I will bring my wife in and the display van was magically sold, another van was offered at higher price, then another was apparently a 2022 chassis which was also more expensive. Had issues with not getting the warranty, was sold on warranty anyway after I declined 5 times, had to complain and request refund on warranty which led to an extended wait and filling out and mailing bunch of forms. It's a standard story, also previously I visited La Mesa RV and hated the experience there, was bummed to learn that Rec Van is also La Mesa RV dealership. My van was delivered with the messed up alignment... not something you would expect from a vehicle at this price point. Also the front bumper step cover was missing. The salesperson was nice, but he had no control over the situation essentially. read more
