This shop is located in a small strip mall with ample free parking in the shared lot with the other businesses. This shop has a large dining area with a few tables to sit and enjoy your treats. They have a huge selection of scooped ice cream. Most of which are exotic/unique flavors. They also have my favorites like strawberries and cream, maganadas, yogurts, papas, elote, tosta locas, assorted frescas, and a selection of paletas (popsicles). The ice cream was fresh, and it is rumored to be house-made. The service was ok. I will admit, my interaction with them was limited, and they just did their job. I was not really hungry and just got a scoop of passion fruit ice cream. It was a decent-sized scoop and was really good. I liked the texture, consistency, and flavor. My kids got cookies and cream and Spiderman. They said the cookies and creams tasted like banana, and the Spiderman tasted like bubblegum. They were not fans. I was in the mood to try something new. I had noticed this ice cream shop listed on Yelp and decided to stop in. They are located in a big shopping center with lots of parking. The dining area and the order counter are quite large, clean, and colorful. It's a lot to take in before being greeted by the owner. I noticed that most of the labels were written in Spanish which I am not fluent in. Fortunately, the owner was quite conversant in English and able to walk me through my choices. I decided to try something called the "Mangonada" which is something I would call "Fire and Ice". The frozen fruit drink is made with mango sherbet, lime juice, Chamoy sauce (made from pickled fruit and peppers and has a sweet, sour, salty, and spicy flavor combo), and chili powder. There is also a Tamarind straw as well as a long plastic spoon for digging out the chunks of mango in the "drink". The flavor was so different from anything I have had, that it did take a while to decide what I felt about it. It wasn't bad, but it was just such a different flavor that I don't know if I ever truly appreciated the quality. There were some bites where the chili powder landed squarely on the back of my palate and was hot enough to make me cough lightly. There were bites where the mango was dominant and cool/soothing. I mixed up the contents and when balanced, the sensation was fine, but I don't think I am a big fan of the combo. The tamarind straw is another unique feature of this choice. Tamarind is a tree based bean that when ripe, has a bit of sweet and sour taste. The processed pulp clings to the plastic straw that is dipped into it (think of how a corn dog batter sticks to a skewered hot dog.) The texture of the tamarind is a bit chewy (like eating a fig newton). Also note that the bottom of the straw is covered and partially filled with the tamarind so you probably won't be able to suck the liquid through the straw until you eat the tamarind off the bottom. And be aware, the chili powder and Chamoy sauce are what you will most likely suck through the straw on the first try, so be prepared for a blast of spice! I would also like to note how generous the portions are. I ordered a small and it came in a 12 Fl Oz cup with a rounded top that was filled to the rim of the cap. I measured at home and realized this was a 20 ounce serving and was considered "small". Yikes! If I go again, I would probably play it safe and try one of their numerous types of ice creams or popsicles. But, it was worth trying something new so that the next time I experience a spicy and sweet combo, I will be better able to enjoy it by having a better sense of what to expect. This is a great place to come for dessert. They have a massive selection of ice cream, sorbets, and popsicles in both standard and traditional Mexican flavors. The sign in the window also advertises that they have tortas (sandwiches), but you'll have to ask for them as they are not listed on the huge menuboard. Service is very friendly and bilingual. If you are looking for a unique dessert experience, definitely stop by La Michoacana! I had passed this establishment countless times as I shopped at the neighboring Big Lots. Never really gave it a thought to enter. One day while my brother was visiting, we searched Yelp for a nearby dessert place. When this place popped up on the list, I was intrigued. Upon entering, I was met by a very spacious and clean shop. We went after dinner and it was fairly empty with the exception of the handful of people popping in to grab treats to-go. Lots of tables and chairs which indicate a potentially great spot to hang with friends or family. The menu was quite diverse with treats ranging from sweet (ice cream) to savory (Hot Cheetos and Cheese!). For this trip I had the paramocha (fresh fruit cup with spice and fresh orange juice) while my brother had two scoops of ice cream from their large array of choices. Both of these treats were fantastic! The paramocha was very fresh tasting and it was neat watching them make the orange juice ahead of time. The chili seasoning paired well and gave a nice, flavorful kick to the cup. Additionally, the lady behind the counter was very knowledgeable and kind. She completely broke down the ingredients in the cup for me when asked. The ice cream is very fresh tasting and has a nice balance of sweetness. Additionally, the serving sizes are huge and reasonably priced for a dessert shop. I bought the double scoop after past experience at other ice cream shops, but could have definitely gotten away one scoop. I like how he layered the mangos, chamoy, and etc inside the cup. After I paid I went outside and begin eating it. It was a nice flavor not too sweet and not too spicy. I loved the taste of the lime seasoning, I am sure he used tajin. Above all it was good. I would recommend people getting a medium or smaller, because it was huge. The large would be good for two people to share. Whenever I come back I will try something totally different. Ps. I love how spacious this place is.
