If you like tamales, this is a great spot to get some. There's ton variety too beyond the traditional ones you may already be aware of. To start, the location on the intersection of Satellite Blvd. and Old Peachtree Rd. in Suwanee. It's right next door to the BP gas station. Interior wise, it's modern and bright. Seats are long the walls mostly. Wasn't busy at the time but it does seem like it could be limited on seating space on a packed night. A lot of people order takeout though. Great place for that option. The menu itself has some other options besides tamales but seriously if you're going to play called Tamale House, you better be getting their tamales. The the tamales come in 2 varieties Red and Green. The only difference between the two is the type of salsa it's prepared with traditional red or green verde. Chicken or Beef are the popular ones most people go for but they have other options like fish too if you're curious to try new things. The combo deals here are pretty good. Comes with a drink and sides of rice and beans. The tamale itself is generously proportioned in terms of size. It's bigger than the average ones you may be used. One will definitely leave you satisfied, two will leave you stuffed, three will probably leave you in a coma. Anyways, definitely worth checking out from my standpoint. Came here with friends for dinner after work. FOOD: If i would give this place 6/5 stars i would. The food was completely phenomenal. I ordered the spicy chicken tamale with a chicken taco and I must have devoured all of it under 10 minutes. So good, the tamale tasted so authentic, the sauces were so fresh and the combination of flavors was unreal. My friend got the Sopa and not only was it delicious, it is so worth taking a picture of because it was so darn cute. Embarrassed but also not embarrassed to say that I'll def be hitting this place up again probably today LOL. AMBIENCE: This is a trendy little spot. I love the pink flowering trees they have and the paintings on the wall. It is nice and spacious on the inside so you can def social distance. If I was to suggest anything, is maybe consider adding a patio or seating outside? It would only add to this hidden gems charm. Casual place, no need to dress up. I rarely leave reviews so this means something. La Mixteca is next to a gas station and may not look like much from the outside, but the food is absolutely outstanding. The interior is clean and well-kept. I ordered the taco & tamale plate w rice & beans which was absolutely delicious. This is food your Abuela would make, and I'm not exaggerating when I say that every other tamale I eat in the future will be judged against this one. The chicken was deliciously seasoned and not dry in the least. The table next to us ordered Micheladas which looked fantastic. Will 100% stop here again next time I find myself in Suwanee. Tamales here are amazing. We ordered some pork and chicken tamales, nachos, empanadas, and tacos. The gentleman that works at the front is so very kind. He was very patient with me when I was checking out the menu forever and he had our togo tacos made when we were just about done eating at our table and yes the tacos were still hot when we got home yay! Nothing is ever too spicy for me but their red sauce had that kick I really enjoyed and the green sauce is really nice too. Love their large tables. Almost 5 stars but I found a hair in my tamale. I'm from San Diego, which borders Mexico, so I grew up on authentic homemade Mexican food. I can honestly say that the food here reminds me of home, especially the tamales. Not to mention that the prices are super reasonable for the amount of food you get. I was given an extra tamale so I took it home to eat and that's when I discovered the hair. No way it was mine either because it was inside of the tamale. Omg the best tamales I've had yet. I had a rajas tamale which is cheese and jalapeño and it was sooo good. Just the right amount of softness if you know what I mean. The Mexican pizza is to die for. Parking is atrocious during lunch but for a good reason. Everyone wants to eat here (that and it shares a parking lot with the BP gas station). Their tamales is similar to home made tamales. I always change up the protein but they are all very good and I LOVE their beans. It's perfectly salted and seasoned. I think I would eat it if it was a soup. I get their horchata. Perfect for a hot summer day. It's very sticky and very sweet. I always have to ask for extra ice. I think it's very considerate of them to give me little ice so I can get more drink for my buck. I was born as a city person, but now my family lives in Western NC, in a rural area that has plenty of Central American folks but few good restaurants of any cuisine type within reasonable driving distance. So, when we visit our family in Tucker GA we make a point to come to LA Mixteca on the way home. It is SO GOOD. When we get there at night they are sometimes fully out of tamales, always out of some, but that's because they are made fresh in the am! It was quite a lucky find, as you wouldn't expect great food to be sold nextdoor to a gas station, but it is clean, delicious, well-done, and service at the counter for pickup has always been top-notch too. Cannot overestimate how good the food is here, for the region, the price, the everything. We always take our tamales home (except today when we ate them in the car on the way home, with beans and rice sloshing all the way to the highway because we couldn't wait to eat the goodness!) read more

Okay so this place is a seat down restaurant however they don't take your order by your table. So ordering style is like fast food style. You order by the cashier and they will bring your foods to the table. Even though ordering style like in fast food but trust me their food is not fast food quality! Everything is so gourmet! And taste so dang good. I'm not quite sure if this place taste authentic. But regardless in my opinion it tastes so good. I've been to some Americanized Mexican food restaurant, this place definitely not one of them. So we had the : 1. Taco platter. Al pastor and carnitas 2. Tamales platter. Spicy pollo and spicy carnitas 3. Chilaquiles. With 2 sunny side up and pollo with salsa verde. 4. Grill corn elote. 5. Sweet tamale. Queso. Everything is delicious. All the platters serve with rice and beans. Salsa is also good ,although it could be too spicy for some. The tamales is a must have here, they have a lot of options you could choose from. I came to this restaurant on a Sunday at 10AM and of course it was empty but did not disappoint. The menu has breakfast/brunch items in addition to lunch/dinner. All options looked hearty and delicious. The really unique thing is that the tamale is the main focus - they have so many different types! Most Hispanic/Mexican restaurants feature tacos, fajitas, quesadillas, etc and have the tamale as a side dish. I tried the Tamale bowl and it was a deconstructed tamale. I was really impressed. The best part in my opinion was the fried egg on top - it just really pulled everything together and added more flavor to the dish. Let me just say - this place was very worth the 40 minute drive into Suwannee. La Mixteca Tamale house is located right behind a BP gas station. We were greeted by 2 friendly servers. This is a order at the counter and seat yourself kind of place. The gentleman behind the counter was very helpful and helped us decipher the menu. Being a huge fan of breakfast for dinner, we got an order of the eggs divorciados on a little corn cake, one chorizo sopes - a little tortilla topped with chorizo, black beans and cheese, and one tamale bowl. We got the chicken tamale with spicy green sauce as the base, and it's covered with crispy potatoes, cheese, a fried egg, veggies and some cabbage. The food was absolutely delicious, and I wish I had room for more. I could have licked the pretty Magnolia Hearth and Hand plates they were served on. That feeling when you're craving tamales but you know that's a labor of love and you'll never get any......come here. The food is good enough to make you nostalgic and miss your mom. I loved the set up of the restaurant. It was simple but had key items that stood out like the plants on the wall and hanging from the lights. I also enjoyed that the tables were bar stooled and communal (or big enough for a huge party) The service was good, the cashier was helpful but they were out of some of the tamale flavors, which was disappointing because I'm not a big red sauce person. Otherwise, our food came out quickly and was fresh! Here's what we got: Normally, I mix the frijoles with the rice and go to town with it but I enjoyed the rice individually. It had a great tomato based flavor that wasn't overwhelming but stood out. The texture was soft and fluffy, there were a bit of hard grains in there but I actually enjoyed the crunch so no complaints with that. The frijoles were a major disappointment to me. Frijoles are my favorite part of any Mexican meal but they lacked flavor. It was perfectly presented but when I took that first bite, it lacked everything. It was plain beans with a little bit of cheese on top nada mas. The texture was perfect, firm but not like thick cotton in your mouth but also not soupy to where it was losing its consistency.....just bland. The tacos: I tend to avoid carne asada when I try new spots because I like my steak tender, juicy and medium rare. Most places cook it through and it gets dry and tough, well not here the steak was tender, juicy and cooked through. Also they use one tortilla instead of two and fry it, so there's a crunch in each bite. Honestly, that's new spin that I can get with because each taco was amazing. The al pastor was so flavorful. I could taste the pineapple and blend of seasonings, the meat was tender and the sauces were fire ! WARNING! Their sauces are actually spicy, like burn your lips and fingers spicy. Especially the green sauce of death the servers warned us about. I love spicy and I couldn't take it so beware. Finally....... Los tamales!: Like I said, I'm normally not a red sauce fan but my pork tamales were delicious! The masa was firm (most important factor) but not dry The meat to masa ratio was perfect Personally, I feel the meat could've had a bit more seasoning. It wasn't flavorless but it wasn't flavorful. The pork was tender and saucy, but once again it was missing something. 9/10 I would go back and try their desert tamales and the green sauce tamales. Clean establishment right next to the gas station. There are gas pumps in front of the the door to La Mixteca but you know what...? Who cares. The love they put into their food is superb. My deconstructed tamale, Ellyns tamales with rice and beans were delicious. I really enjoy walking into a restaurant that is obviously clean clean clean. Everything is stacked neatly. I'm sure the owner is very OCD and that makes for a clean establishment with all details on point especially when it comes to their food. Come here soon and enjoy. I am a lover of tamales! It is one of my top three favorite Mexican street foods, which also include beef tongue tacos and beef or chicken taquitos smothered in Parmesan cheese! I came here with my family last Friday`partially as a celebration for my wife and partially to spend a little time with our oldest son. After all, we don't see much of him anymore between his job, dual enrollment in high school/college, girlfriend and work-out schedule. I must say, this is THEE NICEST looking Mexican restaurant I've ever seen attached to a gas station! [ THE FOOD ] On our first visit, I can't say I was a fan of the food and planned on writing a 2-star review, but wanted to give them a second try. Our order included two beef tongue tacos, one chicken taco, one steak taco, one steak torta, four tamales and one tamale bowl. All tacos are $2.50 each except on Tuesdays. Be sure to ask for lettuce, tomato & cilantro (no charge). The BEEF TONGUE TACO was EXCELLENT! If you've never had beef tongue, you are missing out on one of the best parts of a cow! Here it was seasoned to perfection and lightly fried, but a tad on the tiny side in size! (4.5 stars) Both the CHICKEN and STEAK TACOS were also very good as well as the $6.99 STEAK TORTA (4 stars). The TAMALE ELOTE BOWL was ordered by my wife because they'd run out of vegetarian tamales. Her rating on the bowl was 3 stars. Now for the TAMALES. My son and I ordered the tamale plate which includes two tamales, rice and beans for $9.99. He got the Chicken tamales while I got the Pork, both with mole sauce. I'm not sure if all mole sauce is the same, but it had a very bitter flavor that I did not enjoy. On this visit I would have rated the tamales 1.5 stars. Hoping it was just me, I came back for a 2nd visit the following Wednesday and tried another PORK TAMALE plate, but this time with the regular red sauce instead of the mole. VERDICT: I like their tamales a lot better without the mole sauce. Maybe its an acquired taste! I also ordered a beef tongue taco, but had to substitute a steak taco after I was informed they'd run out of tongue. Time was 12:58 pm. 2nd visit and 2nd time they'd run out of a menu item. NOTE: The tamales are nice sized and full of meat! The masa was authentic and not overcooked! The tacos however seem a little small. On both visit I thought the RICE was decent, but the REFRIED BEANS were too runny. I prefer refried bean to have a thicker consistency than what is offered here. Coke fountain drink | $1.99 each x 2 TOTAL $54 w/tax first visit TOTAL $13.24 w/tax second visit (Tamale plate + taco) [ FINAL THOUGHTS ] I'm happy I gave them a second visit, because I definitely enjoyed the pork tamales much better with a red sauce than with the mole sauce. I am not familiar with this sauce, but if it's supposed to be bitter, then they did a good job preparing it! Personally, I will never order that sauce again. Overall I would rate Tamale House 3.5 stars. I would've rounded up to 4 stars if not for being out of items on each of my visits. But alas, that combined with a bitter first experience, small tacos and $1.99 refills leads me to round down instead of up. As my wife and I were driving around town, we finally entered inside La Mixteca Tamale House; and what a shocker as it's NOT connected to the BP Gas Station. A common misconception most of us had, but you'll actually be amazed once you walk inside and see that it's actually a clean modern restaurant. I should mention this is located in Suwanee on the intersection of Satellite Blvd and Old Peachtree...pass Peachtree Ridge High School and it's on your left side (if you pass The Home Depot, you went to far). After our shock phase came down a bit knowing it was an actual cool place (see pictures below), we looked at the menu and noticed lots of great options for tamales! I've never been a crazy tamale person; like them but will eat other things over it --- but these tamales were delicious! I'm definitely coming back as they made it to perfection, nice and warm, and melted in your mouth. If your taste buds allow, they have a nice salsa bar as well (see picture below) which was nice to spice up your tamale. SERVICE = GREAT (the woman at the counter (where you order) was real nice and patient as we decided what to get, provided us options, and even delivered the food (nice and warm) to our table). The chicken tamale (see picture below) which I ordered was superb with a poached egg on top, red cabbage, cheese, beans, and more. The beans were sooo good I wanted more. The tamales and all the food within was very tasty and well made...didn't rush the order and took their time. The price of the tamale seemed reasonable at just under $10/person and for the quality of the food...it was good. The tamale itself doesn't look too filling at first, but once you start eating through it, you realize the portion is just right and doesn't need to be any bigger. I should mention they have various breakfast items here as well, so will have to give that a try next time! FOOD = GREAT (made nice, warm, and fresh with a great salsa bar to add some kick. In regards to the overall aesthetics, I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't expect it to look so modern, have nice booths, and more (see pictures below). I just wish it wasn't in the plaza where there is a gas station...may prevent some folks from actually wanting to come and check it out. But the inside is really nice and casual. There is plenty of lighting since they have large windows and optimal seating all around. AMBIENCE = GOOD (it's not the best, but certainly not the worst. It works and is a great place to get a quick bite or get take-out). Overall, I'd definitely come back and try other tamales offered and would highly recommend anyone who wants a good eat for a good price to check it out. I was starving and this was the closest vegan friendly place to my hotel, so here I am. My God I'm so glad I came because baybaaaaay my meal was delicious. I am completely biased, I love Mexican food...all the regions, except tex-mex. Miss me with tex-mex. #isaidwhatisaid I ordered the mixed veggies tamale, rice, beans and a tamarind agua fresca. My waitress delivered my tray literally a few, maybe 6 mins tops. The first thing I tried were the beans. Biiiiiiiiiiish....stop playing with me. Poured them right next to my tamale covered in the delicious spicy green salsa and the rice and proceeded to SMASH. The tamale looked pretty small but they mix the veggies in the mix so you get veggies in every bite. But that means it's mostly tamale dough so it's way more filling. Which I have 0 complaints about.
