Picked up Xmas tamales yesterday along with sweet bread. Sweet bread was hard a a rock. Tamales (beef) has my entire family with food poisoning. The family members that didn't eat the beef tamales are just fine. Literally everyone who ate the beef tamales were on the toilet all night and still sick this morning. The store needs some TLC, but if you like Mexican food, you will not be disappointed. It is basically a Mexican bakery, with some already cooked food. I got carnitas (marinated pork), bolillos (oval roll/bread), refried beans and salsa. All of them made daily (they make bread several times a day) and all made there. Yelp automatically gave them two starts but I give them none. This place is supposably the best place for tamales, carnitas and bolillos in Whittier, so I finally stopped by. I understand they close at 7pm, so I rushed over after googling them. I arrived at 6:40pm ,I still have 20 min. When I arrived the lights are still on all the workers are still there. I started knocking because the door was locked. The workers saw me and walked to the back. One man stood in the front and pretended to be on the phone giving me his back. So, I waited because I know he saw me and I knocked again. He turned his back again! I have never been treated so poorly. The worst customer service I have ever received. I've spent years trying to find decent tamales around here for years and La Moderna is the only place that has satisfied my search. Their green chicken tamales are so yummy, moist and flavorful. I work around the corner and look forward to fridays and Saturday's just to have them for breakfast. Their other tamales are good, but these are the star of the show for me. The pan dulce is very good (love the denseness of their elote especially--it doesn't just disintegrate into your coffee), as are their carnitas, chicharron, and tamales (they even have green pork ones, which are sometimes hard to find elsewhere). Customer service: Needs major improvement. The lady at the front counter wasn't the most pleasant. She needs to know the importance of welcoming customers with a smile. It wont kill her, nor will it cost anything. Re-training her might help. Tamales: They were okay (6/10). Cheese were the best tasting of the assortment I purchased. Decor: I usually don't care about decor, just as long as the establishment is clean. This decor was rather disturbing though. Next to the cashier, there are pics of men (presuming the owner) hunting and showing off their various kills. It's uncomfortable to see men with guns, holding the carcasses of defenseless animals. Highly recommended by Mike P. I drove myself to this bakery with anticipation to try my first pan dulce. I've seen pan dulce before but never really attempted to try them. Plus, he said they make good tamales too. I LOVE tamales. And I'm a bit spoiled with really good tamales since I usually just eat tamale my gf makes homemade:)* Just like with other reviews comment, they do have looooong lines! Its a small space so you're pretty much elbow to elbow with everybody. The pan dulce is self serve so you grab your tray and your tongs and hit the arrays of selection of pan dulce right on your face. I selected four different kinds. (I'm saving one for Cate T. hahaha) See photo. I also got their beef tamales red and their pork tamale green. When I got home, YUM! YUM! YUM! I truly loved the texture and consistency of their masa. Its tied with my gf's homemade tamale. And their pan dulce was really sweet and savory. I can only imagine the amount of sugar they use to get it to taste so friggin' good! hahaha So why not a full 5 star? Well, I can't compare it to any other pan dulce places. Is there any better way to start a Sunday than with menudo, tamales, and football? Ever since our good friends at a local bar/steakhouse told us they serve menudo and tamales from here every Sunday we've been wanting to try this place. They've also told us to get there really early since they sell out quickly. We didn't go THERE super early. Instead we opted to go to La Moderna ourselves with pot in hand and hungry tummy's to get our breakfast. We got 2 quarts of menudo ($3.50 per quart with your own pot), a dozen red pork tamales, and some pan dulce. The second I got home I tore into tamale while I waited for my menudo to heat back up. The tamale was good, just not spicy enough. The texture of the masa sold me. Next time I'll have to try the green pork tamales (they're supposed to be spicy). Order me up a dozen for Christmas! Por favor. The menudo is some of the best I've had. I find that a lot of places don't have enough flavor or enough spice. This one's just about right. It's bursting with flavor, and the spice level is decent. For a spicy fiend like myself I added tons of red pepper flakes and some tapatio, and it was just perfect... until the menudo went down the wrong way and burned. Ah well, it's all worth it. Haven't tried the pan dulce yet, but I'm sure it's great considering everything else has been fantastic. read more

Love love LOVE the goodies I got today from La Moderna Bakery! I had the green chile and cheese tamale. It was so delicious and fresh...not too much masa. Just enough. The beef tamale with red sauce was tasty but the shredded beef was a little too chewy for me. Last but not least I had the pumpkin empanada and that was SCRUMPTIOUS! I'm ordering a bunch of these for my next party. My friend had a fat pan dulce that she said tasted fresh, sweet and yummy. She thoroughly enjoyed her beef tamales with red sauce. Our other friend enjoyed his pork tamales with green sauce. He thought the pink sweet bread lacked sugar so it was just so so for him. I seriously can't wait to go back fur more empanadas. Been coming here off and on for years. When you walk-in you immediately smell the fresh carnitas and chicharron. The pan dulce is always fresh and delicious. However, the tamales which were always good, but were disappointing this time. They were out of the pork chile but I was always a fan of the chile cheese, so we ordered. I unwrapped my husk and it seemed to be a very small tamale. Kind of like unwrapping that big present and left with little to nothing. It was small but what was more disappointing, was the flavor. I didnt taste the chile at all, cheese was not melty and the masa was in need of salt. Very bland. I feel like this batch of tamales were thrown together. Another case of inconsistency. I will be back for pan dulce, not sure if I will go for the tamales. If they would just taste their food before they put it out, it may help this issue. Staff was sweet and I appreciated the safety (COVID) precautions in place. Felt safer here than in a busy market. read more

Had a very frustrating experience here lately. I waited in line for 20 minutes (they are popular, completely acceptable to have a line), but when I got to the front to order, I was told they were out of stock on the item. The board outside indicating stock of items had apparently not been updated and they were "very sorry" for the inconvenience. They said it would be ready in 20 minutes if I wanted to wait, but that I was not allowed to wait outside off to the side. I was told I needed to get back in line, go to the end, and just `hope` I was in a spot in line that happened to have them in stock when I got back to the front. If you aren't going to update customers on stock when you run out, you certainly cannot then tell them to "get back out in line and try again"; that's just ridiculous. read more

First, I have to say that this bakery makes delicious tamales, pan dulce and the carnitas are the best tasting around! I gave them 3 stars because of the customer service. I asked the young man at the counter if he had any pork tamales. He grumbled, "we have the four on the menu." I then ordered 2 dozen. I asked for 2 pounds of carnitas and he acted like I asked him to stick his hand in a pool of piranhas! I also asked for some refried beans. All this time he seemed liked I was interrupting his day somehow. No smile, just a pissed off look on his face like he had something better to do. Wow...when we walked out of the bakery my son replied, "looks like he was not appreciative of that $63.00 sale." The times I have come to buy there, the salespeople are rude! Good thing they have good carnitas and tamales to save them because they all have horrible customer service there!!! They try to push you out asap, almost kicking you out. The owner son was complaing to another customer how people complain about them raising prices and how people should be more understanding SMH. Just wasnt the correct way of saying that. Today the Moderna get Cinco Estrellitas from me and my family! So really it would be 20! People, don't go buy your conchas anywhere else! No where will you get the meaty, sweet, addicting, concha that only La Moderna puts out. I've seen some newcomer trendy little bakeries come into the game and try to sell their 1-2 buck concha when Moderna's are huge, authentic, moist, meaty, and bigger! So don't get ripped off. We ordered some tamales to test. And boy we're we in for a surprise. There was a cockaroach that was cooked in the leaf that wraps the tamale. So we went back not to cause a scene but just to ask for our money back. Granted they refunded our money but the worker said sometimes bugs come in the leaves because they get it in bulk. So i guess it JUST happens.‍They apologized but explained it like its a normal thing. read more

I was watching tv and saw advertisement for this place for their tamales. I drove over only to be disappointed. There is a limit of 4 in their store. They did not acknowledge me to enter when there was only 3 people in the store. I proceeded to.place my tamales order and when i got home the order was incorrect. I ordered cheese tamales and instead got all meat. The sweet tamales were raw inside. Took a picture of it because I wasn't making this up.
