A humble hole in the wall sit-down restaurant, whose interior decor defies the shabby exterior and shows a lot of passion, love, and pride in the Oaxacan regional culture. The murals are paintings are quite rich and warming. The menu was recommended on LA's eater.com as one of the choice places to get a mean coloradito mole sauce, so on a whim I decided to find my way through the confusing clutter of Bangladeshi biriyani and kebab restaurants in the middle of Koreatown's large plazas of Korean establishments, to a little nook of southern Mexico--- worlds within worlds that sprout like weeds in the grimy, pitiless Los Angeles concrete. The lady at the front desk recommended me to get an horchata traditional style with pecans and melons and a bit of pink-flavored ice. It was quite refreshing and a lovely foil for the coloradito mole dish with chicken when it arrived. It showed up as a desultory platter of chicken pieces drowned in a deep purplish-brown sauce, with a small saucer of rice set amidst it. The mole was indeed, noteworthy, subtly done such that none of the spices came too forward in an objectionable way. It was a masterful blend of the warming chocolate with the slightly sweet, yet round blend of spices. An impressive, deep flavor profile was well worth the detour I made to find this cafe. I was less impressed by their dull presentation. They could have livened it up with a sprig of green, an effort at a garnish. But it was plain tortillas and rice and mole, I was truly at a street-side stall in Oaxaca transported to grungy Los Angeles. I dropped $20 here that should only have been $14 in my estimation. I wouldn't go back, it's not worth traveling for; but if you can, find an establishment on eater.com survey of best Oaxacan food spots in Los Angeles and sample your way through the restaurants, depending on your neighborhood. read more

Because Mole is my #1 favorite dish and tortillas with salsa picosa. I ordered the spicy chicken enchiladas de mole. 3 filled shredded chicken topped with string cheese raw onions thin sliced with the most delicious mole sauce. It wasn't as spicy but my waitress Sandra brought a habanero/morita hot sauce that just made the mole taste extra better - I'm going to come back bc it's a small place but good. read more

I was hoping this was going to be a place for simple and delicious authentic Oaxacan food, and it was. I just got back into town after a tough trip away and this was so comforting. We went in around 8pm. It was very dimly lit. There was a big birthday party inside and about 4 other couples spread around. We ordered chilaquiles, a chicken rajas tamale, and a jamaica drink. It all arrived within 10 minutes, with a basket of Frenchish bread. The tamale was fair, but the chilaquiles... SO good. Tender chicken, delicious green sauce, lovely stringy Oaxacan cheese, crisp tostada bottom. It was bliss. This was totally enough food for the two of us. The bill was $16.65. The only downer was the parking. Tiny little strip mall, maybe 10 spaces. Absolute nightmare of a Tetris game trying to park. There was a security bloke trying to guide us, at least. Horrible service walked in with my mom on 8/3 around 11am to have lunch. Walked in there's 2 customers inside we didn't get greeted we didn't really mind we had already built an appetite. We grab our own menu and sat ourselves. 10 mins have passed, we were ready to order. A family of 4 walks in the lady in charge hands then a menu a few minutes later she walks to their table with her little notepad ready to take their order. I was so confused we were sitting there for like 15 mins and she never came over to take our order she completely disregarded us. We approached and let her know we were waiting first for the last 15 mins, she continued to take the family of 4 their order and simply said to wait a few minutes with a passive aggressive tone. We got up and left. I continued to come in even before the original owner passed away and never had a horrible service till now. The burrito I had was ok. It had tons of rice & beans like tons. Apparently you can't order a La carte? A customer tired to order 2 tacos but was told they have to order a plate. I can't rate the food but I can rate my experience. First walking in, I wasn't greeted by anyone until I stood in front of the ordering counter for a few & asked if could place a to go order. Then she barely spoke English which isn't too bad because English Is a hard language to learn however she wasn't able to answer my basic questions. I asked for cheese enchiladas which are priced at $11.50 & I asked if that included beans & rice. She said "no" then added an extra $3 for them. That threw me for a loop because WHY are 2 cheese enchiladas prices at $11.50 with no sides. I already had my card out to pay before hand so she pointed to a sign on the wall that shows a charge of $1.50 for credit or debt which I'm almost positive is against the law. All in all I ended up leaving without ordering because nothing in there made sense to me. They're robbing people, I just hope the food is worth it. Lol read more

Came here for one thing, and one thing only: Caldo de Res I started my culinary adventure by sipping on the caldo itself and I was happy to savor a rich and flavorful broth. As I made my way through the vegetables I could feel with the tip of my spoon a big hulking piece of meat at the bottom of the bowl.I used my spoon to bring it to the surface and sure enough it's the biggest piece of carne that I've ever seen in soup! It's tender and delicious and I shamelessly use both hands to eat away at it. With every bite I have to make sure it's juices don't trickle down my arm. As usual I leave the corn for last, and as if the meat wasn't enough, I bite into the corn and it's juices burst and spill all over the table. The elote had been soaking up all the soup like a sponge, and I had finally relieved it of it's misery. Ambience and decor are great, but food makes this place. read more

A hidden gem. The restaurant is located in a very small run down strip mall with very limited parking. But the interior is actually very colorful, cute and has nice decor. My coworker and I came for a weekday lunch. Not very busy, but not empty either. We both ordered the mole plate with cheese. I'm not sure what the plate was called exactly, but it reminded me of enchiladas. You can order the plate with different types of meat wrapped in tortillas and covered with mole sauce and a side of rice. The mole is also topped with cotija cheese. I opted for just cheese because I was a pescetarian for the week. When we got the plate, there was nothing wrapped inside the tortilla! No melted cheese or anything. All we had was the cotija cheese sprinkled on top of the mole sauce. It was disappointing. But me made the best of it. Mixed lots of rice, red salsa and cilantro into the mole and ate the tortillas. We even ordered a side of beans to supplement the meal. Not bad, but also not worth $11. My other friend ordered a seafood soup ($13). That looked really fresh and delicious. It was big too. Came with crab legs, shrimp, clams and fish. A bit messy to eat though and they don't offer tools to help you crack your crab legs. Service was helpful. I think I'd come back. I'm not too familiar with Oaxacan cuisine, so I'm curious to try other things on the menu. If you can't park in the lot, you can probably drive around the block and find metered street parking. read more

Although in a nondescript, somewhat run down shopping strip, the interior is super cute and cozy. Caldo de Res run to cure a common cold. THE AMBIANCE: I was yelping Caldo de Res and La Morenita Oaxaquena Restaurant came up as a top pick so we decided to try it out. La Morenita is in my old neighborhood so any time I am in the area it brings back memories :) The area around La Morenita is a little "hood" but I have never felt unsafe. The restaurant is small and nicely decorated. There is a good amount of seating and they were playing really good live music. I enjoyed the ambiance of this little restaurant. THE FOOD: The Caldo de Res and Camaron Al Mojo de Ajo were chosen off of their three-page food menu. The Caldo de Res at first taste, without the ingredients they provide, is a little on the bland side. They give you a small plate with lime wedges, diced jalapeno, cilantro, and white onion. They also give you a basket of warm tortillas and a side of rice. Once the ingredients were added to the broth it tasted better. The Camaron Al Mojo de Ajo was okay. The platter came with whole black beans, rice like the one offered with the caldo de res, and a salad. The whole black beans were my favorite. I enjoyed dipping them in the garlic sauce where the shrimp were. The rice was also a little bland but it was not bad. The salad on the other hand was more like a plate decorator because it was like - bleh. I did like, however, that the salad is topped with a nice wedge of avocado, which I ate. My only true disappointment at La Morenita was the tortillas. They came out half hard and when I made a taco with a piece of shrimp, beans, and rice, the tortilla broke apart and the juice fell all over my white blouse. It sucked. I was not a fan of the tortillas here. THE TIPS: The menu is not too pricey (about $10.00/$13.50 for entrees). I paid about $30 for two (2) entrees and two (2) huge glass-bottled Sprites. I don't think I've ever seen Sprites that large. There is parking in the little plaza but not that many spaces. read more

Had the oxacan tamale con pollo and it was very delicious! The horchata really sealed the meal together as it wasn't too sweet or too milky. Of course I had to end with my favorite chocolate con pan and the sweetness of the hot chocolate with the bread was delightful. Definitely recommend checking the place out if you get a chance. The parking is really small but the inside is nice and cozy where the waitress is quick to check in and get your orders. All in all 10/10 read more

Wanted to try a new place for comida oaxaqueña. As we arrived they sat us down and I asked if we could take a different seat and the waitress said No because it was a table for 6 people and they didnt want to move them around,yet there were plenty of other tables to be used. We ordered drinks as we started to have our drinks and after placing our food orders, the waitress went back to tell us "oh by the way we are only taking cash." This place is cute and service is fast. But as far as the food goes, it's underwhelming. I'm sorry but your in LA, the Mexican culinary Mecca north of the border - the competition is brutal. Tried the coloradito, the black mole and their horchata. The horchata was the best part of meal. The coloradito was a little tart, when it should be sweet. The dark mole is better than the coloradito, it's spicy and sweet at the same time. Buuuuut the stacked tortilla for the enchiladas were dry (like it had been sitting in the kitchen for a while). Also had the tasajo and cecina each of which were clearly pre-cooked because we got both with burn marks but were dry in some places (hence previously cooked) and warm - not sizzling off the grill. Mind you, we were the only people in there at 8pm. I'd be curious to return for the sake of trying something and hoping this place redeems itself. We also were there late, so I am keeping that in mind. But not tooooooo late, that it would excuse our experience. Because the food was lackluster, we didn't bother to try the Oaxacan staple ...the hot chocolate. Maybe I'll return for that. All in all, I can see how this place may be appealing if maybe you're out late (they close at 10pm) and don't want to do your typical fast food run. To pay with credit card there's a 1.50 charge which is a little bothersome considering it's a food establishment. It's not about the dollar - it's the principle. I've only had Oaxacan food once before so I'm not an authority on how authentic this place is. The food was pretty good and although I personally ate the Tasajo Especial and Burrito to Cecina, the rest of our party was pretty happy with their Tlayuda con Todo and Campechana. If you've eaten Mexican food before, you'll need to adjust your expectations because food is prepared differently in this part of Mexico. You'll notice it immediately when you ask for an horchata and receive a drink with walnut and fruit in it that doesn't taste anything like the rice drink you've tasted. Unfortunately parking here is pretty bad as the lot is shared with California Donuts and there's always a line at that place. If you're going to try this food for the first time, I'd try the Tlayuda. read more

I'm from Richmond, VA. My older son and I are in LA visiting the younger son who lives in Korea Town. It's Mother's Day, we want Mexican. The Mexican fare in my city is watered down to suit the tastes of what Southerners think it should taste like...or something like that because I'm not sure what I ordered from this little place that sits in a small strip mall surrounded by Korean businesses. I've never tasted anything like it. I've obviously been tricked into thinking I've been eating real Mexican food my whole life. Our meal was awesome. What I found to be EXTRA touching was a gift of homemade pastries, wrapped in a pretty package, given to me by the owner, for Mother's Day. I'm not sure if I'll be back to this area anytime sooner or later, but, if and when I do return, I shall stop there again. You should go!! Staff is super friendly, too. read more
