Something close to Boston-style pizza today at this busy eatery that was doing some bang-up business today. Lots of customers, a few different queues and an organized system to ensure people paid for what they ordered. My slice was a little doughy and topped very well with roasted tomatoes and peppers, prosciutto, globs of ricotta and a drizzle of pesto. Almost overwhelming but delicious. Not quite knife and fork eating, but definitely not New York thin crust. Follow the crowds to ensure you're headed into the "eatery" side and not the "catering" side. read more

This place, is one where you get what you pay for...and a whole lot more. First of all there are like 4 Vigas in the area and THIS IS THE BEST ONE. The pizza here is decent, you can find better pizza or similar quality nearby for about the same price, but the food made to order is unbeatable. They have w wide selection of typical italian dishes, lasagna, egg plant parm, chicken parm, steak, chicken, pasta of the day (always good), pesto pasta, linguini, etc. and you can build your own bowl with as much food as you want. I typically get pasta of the day in a small bowl (decent size) for like 6.99 but the large i think is less than 10. Honestly, if you don't want to spend an arm and a leg for food, come here. Carbs will be the death of me. I've been going here for years and quality of food has stayed the same with workers that always have a smile on their face. Everything is made fresh and you have an abundance of different food stations depending on what you feel like eating that day. They have a pasta station, sandwich station and pizza station etc. They offer lunch special for the pasta that include a small pasta, side salad and a drink. Cost is is a measly $7.99 for a food amount of food. I opted for the pasta of the day which happened to be chicken piccata. Paired with my side Caesar salad, bottle water and free bread roll. The deal can't be beat especially when you aren't restricted to only one of two choices of pasta. Everything tastes very fresh and they have such a high volume of customers that nothing really sits there for too long and gets cold. Lunch rush time can be super hectic but they have enough people working to keep the flow moving. Always a good choice for lunch if you can't on anywhere else to go. read more

I've always seen the Viga signs sticking out of random buildings. I've also heard the place's name being tossed around in conversations. Today, I finally experienced my first Viga. I went around 1:30pm, and just like everyone else said, there was barely a line because it was probably after lunch rush. I got in the pasta line, saw this huge mound of pasta with light pesto cream sauce, olives and sun-dried tomatoes, and said to myself: I've got to have that. I totally had it... ate it all... swiped the last piece of ziti pasta on the bottom to pick up the yummy sauce. What made it even more enjoyable was that it was only $3.95! Sometimes, I get hesitant if things are too good to be true, but man, I don't even care anymore. I know my wallet loves me. This is way better than spending the same amount of money on a Subway's sandwich I get on almost all of my lunch breaks. read more

If I don't bring a bag lunch, I look forward to grabbing a sub at Viga. Every time I get the chicken parm on a baguette and it is excellent. Just perfect! The sauce is fresh and the chicken cutlets are also just heaven. My coworkers also love the pizza and calzones but I haven't ventured there because the chicken parm sub it the best I've ever had. This had to be the worst experience for delivery that I have ever had. I called to place an order-they referred me to the other Stuart location. I call the Stuart location and they tell me to call this store- They took my order anyways and passed it back on to this store. The delivery was for request NOON. I got the food at 1pm.---Are you kidding me? They then tell me that they didn't realize that we were 12 blocks from their location even though I specified exactly where we were located.--Really? If it's that difficult why would you not call and inform your customer of the delivery time problem? I would have sent a courier or paid for a cab but that option was not given to me. I'm so happy Viga opened up in Pi Alley! It's always hopping during lunch hours, but service is super fast so it doesn't matter. Everything is good-- pizza slices are huge and actually fill me up (usually I'm a 2 slice girl), the wraps, both hot and cold, are all predictably good, and there are always interesting pasta specials to choose from as well. My main problem is that is takes me forever to decide what to order-- total sensory overload. Suggestion: Have your money ready when you get to the check-out counter! The line may look long, but you'll be through it before you can say "Mama Mia!" The cashier usually has your total calculated before you even reach the counter, has your food in the bag before you can put it down, and is calling the next person before you've even finished paying. This place is legit. Sometimes you just need carbs. Carbs carbs carbs. Omnomnomnom. When that happens--when the hangry is setting in--Viga is the place to go. Pasta, pizza, sandwiches. Cheese cheese cheese. Seriously, if you are feeling hangry and carb-less, just drop what you're doing and go here. The sandwiches and salads look good, but I never mess around with them. Pizza specials, calzone specials, and pasta specials. Because hello, they're special. And by special, I mean dripping in cheese and sauce and totally delicious. Lobster mac and cheese? Yes. Chicken pesto 'zone? Yes. Stuffed shells? Yes. And you know, as long as you're treating yourself, you might as well grab a tiramisu on the way out--also extremely legit. I think some folks shy away from this location because it looks crowded from the outside. On todays show I am going to teach you how to make a spicy buffalo chicken wrap! 1) First take any large sized tortilla and quickly warm it. 2) Next apply some blue cheese to the middle, add some celery and rice 3) Cut some fried boneless chicken into SMALL pieces and place them over the rice. 4) Now spread some hot sauce over the rice. Make sure you apply enough sauce. This is important. 5) Now wrap it in foil and paper and put the brown sticker on it. The most important part is having enough hot sauce in it else it will feel as if it is plain rice chicken wrap. Customers dont like that and when they are p*ssed off a lot of times, they give bad reviews for it on Yelp. Messing with Yelp is not something that businesses should do. Late lunching pays off! No lines! I came a little before 2pm (I also wandered around for a few minutes trying to find Pi Alley...obviously I'm new to working downtown) and there were maybe three other people getting food. I got one of the pasta specials with pasta and a light pesto cream sauce and it's surprisingly good, particularly for $3.50! So, I want to first start out by saying that every restaurant has bugs and other stuff the floats around. I have come to accept this and I don't mind a few bugs/hairs here and there. If the food is really good, I will just pick it off and continue eating it. If it's too bad, I just stop eating but don't put up a fuss. A co-worker told me about this place and mentioned that although they had affordable prices and was close, she hasn't been back since she saw bugS running around the salad making area. My response, "meh.", a few bugs never bothered me.......... I had been there numerous times and I enjoyed their wraps and sandwiches. On wednesdays, they have their veggie alfredo ziti which was spectacular! Another sidenote that will make sense at the end: I love mice and I like they are adorable and they never really bother me. I even used to have a pet rat. I don't get freaked out like the rest..... So the downfall came when I was in there ordering some food and I went over to see what pizzas they had. Who did I find to my surprise? A gray mouse that SLOWLY walked over the pizzas and went back to it's path along the window...........I pointed and told the man, "oh my! there's a mouse on your pizza!" He looked but did nothing about it. He didn't even pretend like he was going to throw out the pizzas. But mind you, the mouse was on the inside of the glass walking all over it. I didn't order my food and waited for dinner time. Just their mere disregard for this mouse-pie was enough not to go back. The mouse wasn't even on the floor (which I have seen and not bothered because this is normal). It was all over the food while quite a few people were around............enough said. This place is one of my favorite lunch spots in Boston! No lie- I ate viga meatball subs at least 3 times a week for 8 months when I worked on Milk St. Clearly one of the best meatball subs i've had in my lifetime. Very fresh, great sauce, and an awesome baguette. The meatballs are ligit too which is a plus- most places you get little cheap dry balls of meat. But no, Viga's meatballs are top notch juicy hunks of beef. Their pizza is also fantastic, though I've only gotten it a few times due to my desire for meatballs. Very smart set up, order food, step down the line, grab your food, go to the other side, pick out chips/soda and check out. Viga at Pi Alley is quite simply the best restaurant in Boston. I'm convinced of it. I've been putting off writing this review for a long time for fear of not being able to do this place justice. Enough is enough. I can wait no longer. I can't guarantee I'll be able to say exactly what I want, but I'll try anyway. To preface this review, a coworker of mine calls Viga my "mistress". I rave about this place to anybody who will listen. How to begin the actual review... I don't know where to begin. Every time I try to explain Viga, I'm left speechless. Viga is... goodness in edible form. My favorites (in no particular order): Formaggio Pizza (with the huge mounds of ricotta) Eggplant Parm Pizza Eggplant Parm on Focaccia (white or whole wheat) Peasant Chicken on Focaccia (white or whole wheat) Penne Badia Chicken Piccata Pollo Brozzi For a real treat to the palette, ask for half Chicken Piccata and half Pollo Brozzi (both daily specials on Thursday). The transition and occasional blend of the two flavors is simply delightful. I couldn't make up my mind one day, so I asked for both. A very pleasant surprise. If you have calories to spare, do get a brownie. Viga brownies are the reference implementation of brownies everywhere. I wish Viga mass-produced these brownies and stocked them in stores closer to home. ... On second thought, no, I don't--I'd be a house. Don't be fooled by the long lines. They move extremely fast. The cashiers here are incredibly efficient at what they do, and they're nice about it. Everyone who works at Viga (this one, anyway; haven't been to any other locations) is pleasant to interact with. I haven't met a single rude employee here. It's especially nice when they recognize who you are, anticipate what you're going to get, and comment on a new hair cut or new suit. Did I mention Viga has a frequent diner card? After five visits, you get $3 off your order. After ten total visits, you get $5 off your order. If you eat at Viga every day, you get discounts every Friday! I'm amazed, especially considering the affordability of Viga's prices. I can't think of a single negative aspect when I think of Viga. A delicious and speedy lunch. Viga is minutes away from my office and even if it is completely packed you can be out of there in less than 10 minutes. The thing that will take you the longest is deciding what you want to eat. Recently I have been partial to the Chicken Caesar Wrap, but I also really like the Viga Chicken Club. They have delicious pizza too. Their veggie is really good because all the peppers and onions are sliced really thin. Typical downtown lunch prices: sandwich and drink will run you about $9-10. I had accidently posted on the Devonshire spot before, so I'm giving this a review because I feel like it and I feel that both locations are two different places. The staff, LOVE. Super friendly, accomodating and just overall very nice. I usually go in with a list of things to grab for my office and it works out really well with them. Although they're making sandwiches and wraps; they are interested in what your ordering. Cheap salads, I give that an A++. Under $3 for a side salad and bread, thats a great lunch. I've gotten that numerous times and also have made up a few different wraps; which are amazing. I've just thrown random stuff in it and yum! So creativity was involved. Also the Steak-Fra wrap (no onions!) is incredible. Just sayin' Def a place to stop by though when trying to figure out a quick (very speedy service) lunch on a work schedule. The only downside to them is they kinda rush you at the register, and you feel a little overwhelmed when they're like NEXT! NEXT! Theres also a good variety with the sandwiches, pasta, pizza, salads etc. I like the pesto chicken salad and I think its funny that on their website they list it as having 458g of carbs, which is physically impossible. I'd heard great things about Viga and it didn't really disappoint. The prices are amazing. You can actually get a lunch for five bucks if you don't go crazy. (I like the small order of the baked ziti). I'd skip the calzones, though- too doughy, skimpy fillings, and the marinara sauce they top it with is just plain bland. One problem- there is only a one door entrance and exit. This means having to snake your way in and out trying to avoid bumping into the oblivious suits that are coming and going. But, if you go a little bit before noon to miss the rush you should be fine. Oh- and beware the idiots in line. They'll stand there waiting for the transaction to be completed at the first station when there are three open cashiers. (And those cashiers are wicked fast. No foolin' around from them). read more

I figure any place that was good enough to spawn such an unhealthy addiction to this networking/review site is certainly good enough for five stars... The sandwiches are huge. My newfound love is crunchy green beans on a sandwich and Viga has it. They were also completely willing to accommodate my need for no cheese, sour cream, anything fattening...on my sandwich. The service was super fast too. I hear the lines get a little long during lunch hour. My advice: wait an hour, eat your lunch at 1 (we went there at 1 and there was no line at all) and you'll be all the happier for it. Whoo-hoo Viga! Oh, one bummer--I wasn't acquainted with the cuteness that is the alley in which Viga is located. Therefore, the address was a little misleading. I have been going to Viga for years now, ever since I started working in Boston back in 2006. First on Stuart Street and the majority of the time at Pi Alley. Viga is AWESOME, everything I have eaten from here tastes great and the selection is amazing. Sadly, I have noticed a trend of prices going up, and the portions getting smaller. Just now I grabbed their pasta of the day, I usually get a large since I like hearty portions, and I noticed the trays have gotten much smaller. More like a medium now, but the prices are higher. Additionally, I can get a bowl of similarly sized fresh cook pasta right next to my door for this price, and unfortunately, that may be what I have to do now. I will still go here for the occasional slice, but I don't think i can afford to go here on the regular any longer, I mean I can, but I refuse to play into this smaller portion and higher price affair. read more

Viga is a well-oiled machine. As soon as I had ordered my Naples wrap (chicken salad, red grapes, lettuce and tomatoes), the first lady was scooping the chicken salad and the second was smooshing the tomatoes on top. It took perhaps 20 seconds for the sandwich to be prepped, rolled and packaged. That's pretty darn efficient. The sandwich was huge and a steal at $5.79 for the amount of food I received. I ended up getting through half of the wrap before my stomach threatened me with gutteral retraction if I didn't stop eating. With four cashiers, the long-looking lines go very quickly and you are out the door faster than it took you to walk there. Yum. read more

The best place to get a good fast lunch in the downtown crossing area. Cafeteria set up. It's hidden away in Pi Alley, so there aren't a lot of tourists in your way. Most everyone is one their lunch break from work. The take out salads are outstanding, real greens, asparagus, artichoke hearts, beans, sprouts, apple slices,... things you don't expect in a take out salad. Very fresh, the best salads are often gone by 12:30, so if you're late you'll have to settle for garden salad, still good. There are three different lines depending on what you're hungry for, the food is consistently fresh, hot and satisfying. You get a fresh baked bread roll of some kind thrown in at the register, nice touch, especially when it's still warm. No, this might not be the kind of place that would ever get a "best of" for anything they serve here, nothing is out of this world over-the-top great, but if you're on your lunch break in the area, this is probably the best combination of good food, cheap prices, and fast service. read more

I've been here about a hundred times and had quite a few of their offerings. My experiences have been mixed: Formaggio Pizza (special on Fridays) - white pizza with big, delicious dollops of ricotta on top. Perfect with a side of marinara for dipping. This used to be one of my go-to lunches on Friday until the past year or so. I don't know what they're doing differently, but the Formaggio has become so greasy over the course of the last year. You literally have to squeeze it out like a sponge before you eat it then spend five minutes dabbing it off with a napkin. Have you ever seen that episode of the Simpsons where Homer is trying to gain weight so Dr. Nick tells him that if he can see through a napkin after rubbing a food item on it, it's a good sign that he should eat it? This pizza, before de-oiling, would be perfect for him. Baked Ziti - Always very good. Very, very cheesy. You should get sauce on it, because it is a little dry otherwise. Calzones - I've had varying success with their calzones. First off, they almost never have whatever my first choice calzone it. They always seem to be out of almost every kind. Sometimes you get lucky and they have the one you want. I usually get mine with sauce on it. You have to eat the calzones strategically because the sides and top are just dough. If you eat it from one side to the other, then your last few bites are all dough, no fillings. The best way to approach it seems to be cutting off about an inch on both sides then eating the middle part. In general, the staff is friendly and they can get you in and out quickly. They have bread sitting on the counter for you to munch on while you wait. The line can get a little confused when it's very busy. read more

I usually get the speciality pasta with chicken and broccoli in an alfredo sauce, a meatball sub, pizza or the salads. In my experience, the biggest problem with lunch joints is when you wait up to ten minutes for extraordinarily average food. As far as lunch joints go, Viga's offerings are slightly above average, and perhaps most importantly, one will rarely spend more than five minutes in the place. For those reasons alone, Viga is by far the best place for lunch Downtown as far as I am concerned.. That said, while Viga is fantastic relative to other lunch joints, it is still just that. The food is passable, and sometimes even tasty, but don't go in there expecting flavor that will blow you away. In my experience, the best item on the menu is the chicken parm sandwich, but that is small and overpriced relative to their other offerings. The pasta is super cheap, but accordingly bland. The best value is probably the pizza; you can get a gigantic slice (probably the biggest slice I have seen anywhere) for right around $2.50, and it isn't half bad. All that being said, just about everything is super cheap, so your wallet will love you no matter what. The staff here is absolutely fantastic. Perhaps it is because I am here on a near daily basis, but everyone there is about as friendly as they come. Sometimes the cashiers come off as a little overbearing, but that is simply the result of them trying to serve everyone as quickly as possible, which I appreciate. That said, expect them to call for the next person in line before they even hand back your card or change. That might be a little distressing for some, but you will appreciate it while you are standing in a seemingly endless line. In the end, Viga offers quick service, a kind and attentive staff, great prices, and passable food. In the end, that is about as good as a lunch place can get; alas, even the best lunch place cannot beat the most mediocre dinner place. read more

Viga isn't the worst place I've ever been to. But meh, I've experienced better, as the 2-star rating says. It's basically an assembly line, which is fine. I've only gotten the Greek wrap with chicken. Okay, the Greek dressing is tangy and yummy. And, of course, feta is delicious. This is where the goodness stops. Not kalamata olives--plain old black ones. The chicken's been sitting under some hot lights for a while, and it just tastes fake. The wrap it's on is...dry, tough, and leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Can you ever go wrong with pasta?!? Since I just starting working in the area I figured I would try this location out. Not a large location but def worth the wait for the pasta lunch specials. Everyday they make fresh pasta on site and have daily specials with a wide range of pastas amongst other foods like calzones and pizzas. Today I did the value lunch special and that comes with a small pasta, a side salad, a canned soda/water and a WARM roll - white or wheat. Pasta - I did half and half of the pesto linguine and the penne badia and they were both delicious. The pasta badia comes with roasted tomatoes, grilled chicken and olives in a creamy sauce - it was soooo good. The pesto linguine is with a basic pesto, linguine and roasted garlic and it was just as good. The rolls are served warm and I chose the wheat (after all that pasta ) and it is a decent size. Salads - you have a choice of the small sized Caesar salad or garden salad. Not a bad deal and it's fast paced. Always busy during the king hour but you never wait extremely long in line.
