Came here yesterday for lunch with my family. I had been to here in years, but used to go all the time since the 80's growing up. Coming back brought back so many great memories. The decor is different but very vibrant, with great murals and music. The customer service was great. Everyone was so nice and helpful. Especially, with my grandfather and his order, and some of my family's late arrivals. The food was great and nostalgic for me. I ordered the cheese enchilada dinner plate, with an order of homemade corn tortillas. All of it was excellent. The rice and beans had great flavor. The enchiladas were tremendous, and the corn tortillas were perfection. My grandfather loved his menudo with lime, and everyone else loved their dinner combo of an enchilada and taco, and enchilada plates. I will gladly come back here when I can. But we also ordered a rice and bean burrito and specifically asked for no cheese multiple teams and the woman on the phone even repeated it back to confirm. Unfortunately, we still received a bean and cheese burrito. On top of that, there were no utensils and no chips and salsa included. This location is one of my favorite spots for chips and salsa. The green sauce and chips are always amazing, and I'll definitely keep coming back for those, once you start eating it you can't stop that's how delicious it is. The chicken burrito was good, and everyone else at the table really enjoyed their enchiladas and tacos. However, the tortilla soup was a big disappointment. It had large carrots and other vegetables that don't belong in tortilla soup, very little broth, and didn't resemble tortilla soup at all. Was bummed there wasn't a full bar but had some beer type my friend said was a Michelada. It was good, I usually don't enjoy spicy but to me it was a bit spicy and I still liked it. Most people wouldn't think what I thought that it was spicy but I'll say you would definitely need to try it if you haven't yet. I believe this is the first location. I've been to the San Leandro one which is a lot bigger with more bar drinks to offer. I always need steak fries when I'm in the Bay so I had to get it. Both me and my friend weren't able to finish our food so we put them in to go boxes for the next day. I parked on the street but there is a parking lot for guest behind the restaurant. For a small location it's pretty colorful and inviting. Their bathroom was clean so definitely a good sign eating here because they can keep the place clean. I would recommend this place as a cute hangout for a small group of 4 food portions seems big so I'd share but you would probably want the left overs to yourself later anyways. read more

4.5 stars, but since we can give only full star ratings, boosting to 5 because of the overall experience. Lunched at La Piñata in Hayward with Sching and Roselene on Sunday, December 3, 2023. I had visited a different La Piñata location in either Oakland or San Leandro many years ago, but this was my first visit to the Hayward locale. Neither Sching nor Roselene had been here before, either. Glad we chose to go here, we had a wonderful time. The vibrantly coloured, almost fluorescent venue is very eye catching and has a private lot for parking. From the outside, the restaurant looks super tiny, but once you enter, the building looks more spacious than it initially appears. Inside, the pink and yellow colours continue to burst throughout the dining room with hues of purples, blues, oranges and many more popping through to the canvases of walls, wooden chairs and booths. The quaint eatery's décor welcomes guests with a festive vibe full of murals and Mexican artwork. I especially loved the blue sky and clouds painted on the ceiling as well as the Frida Kahlo wall which we sat next to. We arrived around 12:30 PM sans reservations, but were seated immediately. Right away, we were served complimentary chips and salsa. The chips were perfectly golden and crispy and the salsa had a good kick of spice. Below are items that we ordered: Horchata - Nice and creamy with no chalky residue at the bottom of the drink. A winner of beverages. SUPER FAMOSO BURRITO (CARNITAS) - This was HUGE like a mini log. Sching said that it "was pretty good." I believe him because it looked yummy. It's amazing that he was able to finish such a gigantic burrito, must have been too delicious to stop eating. #9 TWO ITEMS combination of 1 Flauta (shredded beef) & 1 Enchilada Verde (chicken) - I replaced the Burrito with an Enchilada. The Flauta had a nice crisp, but I did need to squeeze lime on the guacamole which also could have used some onion and chile. The Enchilada was good, but I wished that it was topped with melted cheese. Overall, I was happy with my plate and enjoyed it very much. a la carte CRISPY TACO (chicken, 2) - Sounded delectable to eat when I heard the crisp as Roselene bit into one. I tried some of the chicken and found it a little on the dry side. a la carte TACO DE CAMARON (2) - Roselene seemed to like these tacos. Service was quick, friendly, and accommodating. Prices were reasonable as well. La Piñata in Hayward is a very cute place that serves solid good eats. The three of us would gladly return. If they accept parties, this would be an excellent spot for a small fiesta. read more

It's been a good 20 years since I've been to this location (original!) as its small and located in an 'okay' area. This La Pinata is kind of a hole-in-the-wall...or more like a "cantina shack" as its a cute, brightly-colored, stand-alone tiny spot on the corner. I love their Famosa Burrito with shredded beef...pure comfort food with nicely seasoned beef, beans, rice, cheese, enchilada sauce (smothering this burrito) and topped with shredded lettuce and cotija cheese. This burrito is gi-normous (and $14!) and sure, one can eat in one sitting but I either share or eat over 2-3 days with some tortilla chips! its that big! Their chips are freshly made and yummy but their salsa isn't my fave...just a preference as I have my fave salsa located at a spot on C Street in Downtown Hayward. I've been to their other locations over the years. primarily San Leandro as it has more spacing for comfortable dining. La Piñata Hayward is best for take out unless you dine during off hours...about 5 tables inside with some patio seating out front. Ordered through door dash yesterday the tlapeno soup. It's always my go to especially when I'm not feeling good. It has just the right amount of spice. Soup serving is good and has a good balance of chicken and vegetables. The only disappointment is the amount of rice they give. Over the years it has gotten smaller and smaller. Full disclosure, we only came here because the place we always, have to, must go to was closed. It is not knock on la Piñata, just the lengua tacos at el Taquito are my favorite. We have come here for decades now and I have always had the same burrito famoso, the sauce is amazing. Very small and can get very crowded, the service has always been good. This is the smaller la Piñata restaurant and it's a go to for a delicious burrito. read more

You know it's not gonna be good when Mexican restaurant sends lemon instead of lime with caldo. I purchased additional salsa so I guess that meant that they weren't gonna send some for each meal. Beware they tried to hoard their salsa. That's the only reason people order Mexican food when Will you understand this. My friend ordered two chicken enchiladas and one carnitas soft taco. I loved that they make their own chips and salsa! The horchata was very refreshing with a hint of cinnamon! My deduction of one star was for the shrimp tacos. The tacos only had the small shrimp and a lot of diced tomatoes. It did not look like the picture with the sauce and battered shrimp with the works. It could have been that it was my error as well and should have pointed at the picture. I felt I can scoop some shrimp and tomatoes into a shell myself is how simple it looked. It's darn difficult to carry a 5* rating all the time and I'm afraid that this visit brought them back down to 4*'s from us. We were a party of four, walking in at about 1pm on a Tuesday afternoon. There were two four-tops open and we were invited to choose whichever we wanted. Menus and set-ups were presented along with Chips and Salsa. Sometimes the Salsa seems to be a tad spicier than others, but it's always darned good! The server came to take our drink order, so I ordered 3 Diet Cokes and 1 Ice Water. Why? Because for three of us, that's what we always get here, and for the fourth, Ice Water is her drink of choice. The server came back with 3 Ice Waters and 1 Diet Coke. Ooops. So then, one of our Diet Cokes changed his to a Large Horchata. Fine, next time he can order his own drink. Refills on sodas are free, and it turns out to be the same on the Horchata. Good deal! Two of us ordered our usual #4 - Three Item Combo with two Extra Crispy Chile Rellenos and a Taco. I choose a Chile Verde Taco while my friend chose a Carnitas Soft Taco. My partner ordered a #5 - Three Item Combo with a Chile Relleno, Chicken Enchilada and Chile Verde Taco. Our friend, who was dining here for the first time followed our lead with the #4. All come with Refried Beans and Rice. The food was good, and the plates were hot when delivered. What didn't make our experience a 5*? It seemed like the Chile Rellenos and the Beans were put under a broiler or salamander for the extra crispy. Unfortunately, the Rellenos didn't come out as crispy as we've had them here before the extra heat began to scorch the cheese on top of the beans. So, while the food was good, it wasn't as good as we've had here before. Still, this is the best and most reasonably consistent of all the La PInata's that we've eaten at. We'll be back in a few months and give them another go. And if you're wondering if we scarfed down all that food? Only once. We usually eat half and take half home for another lunch or dinner. read more

I have been at La Pinata my whole life. All 36 years. I grew up going to this location and San Leandro. This is as close to homemade as you can get for much of the menu. I love their fish dishes, camarones al mojo de ajo, grene enchiladas and tortilla soup. I asked for a side of rice tonight through DoorDash and for $1.75 they gave like 2 tablespoons of rice. It's insane! A total tip off. I get cost of food is high but to charge $1.75 for a few spoons of rice is nuts. Soup was great but so off putting with the rice they served. read more

Unfortunately, I ended up tossing about 3/4's in the garage. It was really, really dry. There was no pico de gallo; just dried out pinto beans, rice and really dried out grilled chicken. The guacamole and sour cream were in side containers. As it didn't come with chips, I also ordered chips and a extra container of house salsa. The order set me back about $35. Start off by saying the salsa that they give with chips is extremely hot, I feel like I can enjoy it because my mouth burns for too long. The prices for the food are pretty high. For one enchilada and rice and beans after tax is $26. That's without a drink or a tip. So it could be over &30 bucks! I really don't understand that, but maybe that's why it wasn't packed when I went. I don't know who could afford those prices for a single item, and so little of food. The chile relleno was ordered and the chili was undercooked so it had to be pulled out of the mail, also a cheese enchilada, and the corn tortilla didn't seem cooked long enough so that was left behind. The only thing I usually order from here are the rice and beans. For about $8 they give you a pretty good amount. However, the last time I came here I ordered a shrimp taco and 100% do not recommend lol. The shrimp was dry and flavorless. HOWEVER, the rice and beans? Is a go. Tips: the inside is super small so be aware of that. Chips don't come with the rice and beans. You have to purchase that separate. Also, the chef is a little heavy handed on the beans.
