I had dinner last week and firsdt thing I noticed is that they serve two flavors of salsa, from squirt bottles. Not what I would typically like, but I was able to taste each, mild and spicy, and then combine them in the dish. I ordered the Carne Asada. It was brought to the table in a reasonable amount of time. The beef was under the peppers and onions making it very difficult to cut. And while was cutting I had rice falling off the plate. I met a friend here for lunch and it was my first time going despite it being by my house. The salsa with the chips and salsa was excellent. My friend and I both ordered burritos and they were delicious. It was packed but service was friendly and fast and meals were affordable. Eileen the owner is very friendly and makes a great margarita, I had one last week at the salsa competition in front of her building where she served drinks and will definitely order one next time I come for dinner. A favorite of ours. Have been here a lot. Tonight my meal just was not good. Flautas were albino and limp. Rice crunchy not fully cooked and the guacamole had large pieces of raw onion. Hubs meal was perfect. I felt like I was just being a big ole baby and knew next time the food would be right. Hubs said, "No, if it's not right send it back." So I did. My 2nd plate was perfect! They were happy to do it. Flautas were hot and crisp and rice was soft and fluffy. As for the raw onion that is just personal preference. They served the guacamole with a generous dollop. read more

Man has this restaurant been here for such a long time. I would say that I would call this spot a Orangevale staple, if you have lived in Orangevale then you have probably eat here. Now there is nothing super fancy or crazy about their food but it is good. I really enjoy that they are friendly and nice. I tend to stick to their cheese enchiladas and maybe a beef taco, nothing to crazy. I mean really if you find something you really like why change to something else. The rice and beans are pretty good, nothing crazy but they sure are not terrible. All you can eat chips n hot sauce not really salsa... but for a few bucks you can order some pico. I have eaten here for many years. In the past year I haven't gone in much. Last night I had the worst food I have ever been served at a restaurant. It was as though they had pulled the food out of the freezer and microwaved it. Tasteless. Then the put red sauce on my Chile relleno that was tomato soup. No one ever came to our table to ask us if we needed anything. I'm thinking that this must be new owners. I drive past this place every day ... twice every day. I've probably seen it but never registered it in my mind. It's across the street from the Santa Maria BBQ place I like. Dinner last night with my wife and In-Laws. First impression walking in isn't great but since when is that 'really' an indication of the food. It's a seat-yourself place, not fancy, and has been there a long time. When we arrived (7:30pm) it was actually pretty busy. When we left, it was even busier. This place must be a locals secret (so much so that this local didn't even know). Service was great! Super friendly and fun (and our waitress had no problem correcting my incorrect pronunciation, with a smile). Everything on the menu is available all the time. My wife had 2 tacos a-la-carte (which is a French term, I'll never understand that). I call them street style, like the ones you get street side in Ensenada. Very simple open faced with meat (carnitas on one and carne asada on the other) with onion, cilantro, and a lime to squeeze. Smelled awesome, looked yum, and she loved them. I don't remember what my In-Laws had, sorry. But me, I had BREAKFAST ! Mochaca - egg, beef, green bell, and tomato scramble. Refried beans and rice on the side with flour tortillas. In most of their menu items, you can order Hot, Medium, or Mild. I opted for mild because I planned on drizzling their salsa in a squeeze bottle onto my eggs. There's a red bottle on the table. Not sure what it is .. maybe it's ketchup, maybe not. Looks like ketchup. I don't think it's ketchup. Pretty sure its a very mild sauce. It didn't make it onto my food. I chose the other, spicier, bottle. I will definitely come here again. The prices are very reasonable and the food doesn't taste like it came off the Sysco truck. We love to eat Mexican food, and the reviews of this place were promising. However, we ended up being disappointed. The pros: the service was great. We have a toddler and our waitress was quick to get his food and so nice. The food we liked: REALLY good rice and beans. My chile relleno was great too. Atmosphere was fine. The cons: Besides what I mentioned, all other food was bland and boring. Some needed salt, others the meat was kind of gross. My husband and I decided yesterday that we'd go to La Placita for an early dinner tonight. I got a raw steak the first time, a great meal the second time with a camarones burrito, and an inedible carnitas enchilads meal the third. That went back nearly untouched & they NEVER asked if there was a problem. 3 strikes, you're OUT! La Rosa Blanca & Lupitas...hit or miss. Inconsistent, and I want to enjoy my meal more times than not, so they're out too. So, as I sat for my tattoo and asked the Mexican artist where to get GOOD Mexican food he and his business partner both blurted out LA PLACITA! Cool, I knew I had to go. So, long story short....we went. I am writing immediately after my visit so as to remain fully accurate. Yes, the place looks like a dive outside. It's next door to a pawn shop & liquor store. But, don't ya know...most dives have GREAT food. I think because they have can concentrate on buying good ingredients, rather than struggle to turn tables over to cover exorbitant rents. This place LOOKS like it's got cheap rent, but who knows. ..it is in CA after all! Anyway, We walked in & seated ourselves in a booth. There were a few other patrons this Sunday at 4 pm, but it was not packed. Perfect for a relaxing meal. Ice water, Warm chips, and 2 squeeze bottles of salas were presented to us, as well as menus. I already knew I wanted a Patrick burrito based on others' reviews. I got that & a chile relleno a la carte. Hubby got their Patrick Chimi with guacamole & sour cream. He opted for medium, and I opted for hot based on thhe heat of the salsas. We scarfed down a basket of chips & lots of salsa (delicious, although uncnventional in that it's a smooth salsa vs. a chunky one as you might expect). The hot nailed it for me. Shortly after our order was taken by the very kind waitress the food arrived piping hot & looking delicious. I couldn't wait to dig in, the carne asada looked amazing & I LOVE peppers & onions. I ate with glee, finally having found something in the area that I KNEW I liked & could come back to try more dishes from the menu (Next time it's the chile relleno burrito for me). Hubby was equally please with his chimichanga. I stole a bite & although we had the same thing essentially, they were completely different tasting based on the condiments & tortilla styles. Let me just say that his chimi & quacamole was THE BOMB! I loved mine, but was jealous as soon as I tasted his. We split the Chile Relleno & I was originally taken aback that it had cheddar inside. My mind wanted to revolt, but I tasted it before being judgemental & it was really good. Hubby & I each ate half & were really pushing ourselves to do so. The quanities of food are perfect. Large meals, but not so big as to be ridiculous. But, you certainly won't go home hungry, you know what I mean? Is it AUTHENTIC Mexican? I dunno, I'm a gringa from the Bay Area. Never been lucky enough to be invited into a Mexican family's home in Mexico. But, I do have a Mexican Mother in Law, Sister in Law, former Step Mother, and several friends. So, I think I know a good Mexican meal when I get one. This was good, as in homestyle...the kinda thing Grandma would make on Sunday when the family all gathers to visit (if she had lots of help in the kitchen as most Grandma's get & demand). Since my Mother in Law is in the Bay & I don't get to eat at the other's hom,es I mentioned often, I think La Placita will be a great place to get my Mexican food fix every now & again. To the person that wrote the review about her and her man getting food poisoning from this place, really? We go here at least 3 or 4 times a month and have never had an issue like that! The food is always great, service is really good as well! Anyhow, on to my review. First arriving: I saw a person in a review said they got here and didn't know what to do and had to seat themselves. Yes, at this place you arrive and seat yourself (just how they do it there, weird at first, but then you see that's how they roll there). Usually as you walk in, if an employee sees you, they will let you know you can sit anywhere you want. It's open seating. After you are seated, they will usually have your chips and salsa on your table in no time (yes it's in a plastic ketchup type bottle as someone else said, but it's NOT ketchup). Food is always great. My wife is more daring and tries a lot of different things on their menu and loves the variety and quality of the food. I will sometimes get the nacho or a taco and burrito combo. Both are really good. But my usual there is the Giant Burrito Grande. It's really good and sometimes I can't finish it and I bring the last bit home. My oldest daughter loves the "child's plate" which is beans, rice and shredded chicken. Our toddler likes to scarf the "baby plate" which is basically the same thing, just on a smaller place. Did I mention they don't charge us for the baby plate? That's way cool! Also at the end of the meal, they usually offer the kiddos a churro. They also don't charge for the kids churros. If they're busy, you sometimes have to ask them, but they don't seem to mind and crank out those churros. Occasionally the churros can take a few minutes if they just threw them in the oven. Costs here seem reasonable, less than $10 each on average for the wife and I. For all of us we usually get out of there with a bill less than $30. read more

What do I know about Mexican food? I'm white and live in OV. My fav-o-rite California Mexican food had been Taco Bell most my life until I found Addies on Hazel and Greenback. This being said, I do enjoy me some CalMex at the Placita. The staff is friendly, you get warm free chips and the food has always been above average. The prices are fair and children under 3 get free meals. It is extremely OV. So if you liken yourself a Folsomite stay away as it is funky, old and local. What do you expect from a place that is two doors down from a liquor store that sells single cigarettes for .25 cents? read more
