We really enjoyed our experience last night at La Plancha. The cheese dip is so awesome and you get a ton of it. The chips were always hot in the multiple baskets we asked for. I got the chicken quesadilla and my husband got the beef burrito. The black beans in the beans and rice are so good. It's a little different than your standard Mexican food but we really enjoyed it. Also surprisingly affordable. Happy hour is 3-5pm-a margarita for the time you arrive is how much you pay (i.e. 3:55 is $3.55) The service needed a little work but I can completely excuse that as it's still a new restaurant. read more

Wow! Mexican food with a fun sophisticated twist! The tacos are so well thought out and the pairing of the meat (protein) and sauce and fruit (yes, I said fruit) were over the top. Example: sliced grapes on a steak taco with the a delicious light sauce. Pineapple paired with grilled pork and a scrumptious cheese sprinkled on top. Great atmosphere and service too. First, I was pleased to see all of the staff wearing masks and their tables being moved six feet apart. I know this must be a strain on their business because it is a small space already. However, while we were there I watched them fill multiple take out orders.Second, the food...absolutely delicious! My family and I had steak, shrimp and mahi mahi tacos. All of them were wonderful, but I must say that the steak tacos were fantastic! I know someone on Yelp was complaining about paying $2 for chips and salsa but it was a small price to pay for the serving. First time visit on a recommendation. When visiting Saint Simons, for Mexican food we usually go to Cilantros- which has been a staple in our lunch routine for quite some time. Have to admit, we are glad that we visited La Plancha - the food was delicious- We like to think of it as gourmet Mexican! We had quesadillas, chips, salsa and house guacamole- very very good! WOW! This place has only been opened a week and it is a big hit. They have heaters outside so you won't be cold while you wait for a table... here's a hint- It's worth the wait ! Tacos and 'Ritas. Had the chicken street tacos and they were perfect. The chicken was tender and moist and smokey flavored; served on a homemade corn tortilla with onion and cilantro. A lime wedge was also included and it brightened up the flavor of the chicken. The rice and black beans were also excellent. I had a side of guacamole, made from a "secret " recipe; and it was delicious. The chips and salsa were also great. The salsa had a deep rich tomato flavor as if they had been roasted just a little bit. We were here at 11:30AM, it was almost full. We had tried 2 other times at night to get in but it was packed with a line. Now that I have eaten here I know why there was a line! I go out to eat almost on a daily basis. I love to try new things, new places but I do have to say that I am extremely disappointed at the service I received tonight at your restaurant. The food took FOREVER!!! While waiting we ate all the chips and salsa and still sat there a while with no food on the table. Finally after good 20mins we were offered more chips. A while later the food FINALLY came out and one of my friends was missing a side he ordered. When he was half way thru his food him and another person at the table ordered two more drinks and we watched the staff walk around, stand by the bar and NO DRINKS EVER GOT MADE!!!! He was done with his food and STILL NO DRINKS!!!! When I finally got the attention of someone drinks were canceled and check was asked for. EVEN THE CHECK TOOK LIKE 15MINS TO GET. The man working there tonight even had the audacity to walk to our table and really loud asked if we needed something "OH YES, YOUR CHECK!!!" With a nasty and unprofessional attitude just because I guess while laughing about something one of my friends said "can I just get my check and go home?" Not even loud just to us at the table cause we were messing around with him about work. It is EMBARRASSING. If you are not going to have ANY sense of urgency or care to provide a good customer service, check on your tables from time to time to make sure that at least they have water to maybe not choke on their food, then maybe it's time to find a new job. Enjoyed the food and glad that as a resident we have another place on the island to enjoy year round. Only problem when our party of 4 were there was that the music was a little too loud making conversation difficult. Do not mind background music, but also enjoy conversing over dinner. Ventured there on Sunday for the first time. Had heard both good and bad things about the food so we didn't know what to expect. We had hopes this would be similar to a place like El Rey Del Taco or Taco Veloz in Atlanta, unfortunately it is not. We won't go back. The chips were good/fresh but the salsa is bland with zero heat. Maybe offer an arbol chili salsa too or something with some heat as a second option. We didn't try the guac but have heard it is good. Instead we tried the queso but it too was pretty pedestrian. My wife tried the tacos and I had a burrito. They were eh, not bad but not great either. The burrito is small for the price point and lacks flavor (a burrito from Moe's or Chipotle far exceed what they are serving here in terms of taste and value). I had the skirt steak and it was well salted - that I appreciated but then it was just wrapped with beans and rice, no other real flavor. The tacos were ok but not at that price point, 'Taco Tuesday' at other places on the Island offer better tacos at half the price. Let me put the price discussion in perspective for those of you that may be from Atlanta and compare this with a place like El Rey Del Taco. There the tacos are made with handmade tortillas for $2.25 and burritos run $6.25 (https://atlanta.eater.com/maps/best-tacos-atlanta). Importantly, at this price point the food was much better (and didn't lack flavor!) than La Plancha. As a different comparison, lunch at Frontera Grill (Chef Rick Bayless, Chicago) runs about $16 for 3 tacos about what it would be here at La Plancha. Again, no comparison between the two. So in my mind I see a place that has the pricing of a Frontera without the quality of an El Rey Del Taco. Finally, canned soda service is out of place at this kind of restaurant, just get a soda fountain. If you want to offer something unique, put Topo Chico on the menu. read more

We arrived for lunch a bit later in the day, closer to 2. What a wonderful meal. My vegetarian son had plenty of choices, the fish tacos were spectacular and bountiful. The margaritas -- one mango, one more traditional, were tangy and good, so was the paloma. The Cuban mojo pork was also a huge plate with wonderful flavors. And, the elote -- corn -- and queso are also, by themselves, worth a return trip. Gabi was both server and bartender and couldn't have been nicer or sharper. Very disappointing. I would not recommend or order again the mystery chicken taco, fish taco, pork burrito or grandma's very salty soup. The quac and cold modelo were the only things worth consuming. Ok... so headed to a restaurant for dinner and was greeted with "it's going to be awhile, we are short staffed". Immediately pulled out phone for options. I mentioned LA PLANCHA to family 'cause we love Mexican food and in our prayers that I them daily for the amazing food they make. A local behind us said, "Go there!" We did and it was busy (good sign) I love to see locals hitting the best restaurants. We got seated quickly and we ordered Queso and guacamole as appetizers. Then ordered various tacos and burritos. All of it came out hot and delicious. Both Chelsea (server) and Gabby (mamager) we're both incredibly helpful in recommendations on the menu and just helping out as needed because of how busy it was. Jordan's margaritas were amazing! They used freshly squeezed lime juice. I'm a bartender and it was one of the best I've ever had. He keeps the bar clean while you're eating as well! I love Mexican food, and this is the best place in St Simons or anywhere nearby. The food is great, the service is great, and there is a nice informal atmosphere. And the prices can't be beat. They have always had great tacos(chicken, roasted pork, grilled steak, short rib, fish, veggie, and ground beef). There is a wonderful side dish - Elotes, Mexican street corn. I order it every time I go. They have the best chips and guacamole I have ever had anywhere. Although primarily Mexican, they have recently added some dishes from Columbia. I am giving 5 stars because we ate there the third day it was open and any place that delivers a quality product, to a packed house, on its third day deserves that. The chips and salsa arrived quickly. My suggestion would be to add more flavor and kick to the salsa. I liked the texture but it was lacking on flavor. We ordered the empanadas, which were very good. My wife ordered a chicken taco and a beef taco. She said they were very good. I had a chicken taco and I agree. I also ordered the soup. It comes in a large bowl and you either get a cup portion or a bowl. The cup portion was more than plenty for me and i would have to say it was the best thing we ordered. Flavorful, just the right amount of potatoes and plenty of carnitas. Excellent. I hope they add draft beer in the future. Overall a good experience but considering the owner also has tramici and halyards in his portfolio, i would expect that. read more
