But your food plate comes out layered nicely on your plate. The cashier was nice. I didn't interact much but he was polite. I went on a Wednesday afternoon like 5:30pm ish. I got my food pretty quick. I ordered the carne asada plate. As you can see in the pic they are not stingy with the meat they are generous! Pretty good and cheap! Cute little Mexican mom n pop shop where you order at the window and there's sheltered seating outside. I got the flauta plate and it was good. UPDATE well I finally tried the tamales . . . And I can confirm I have no reason to return. The tamale Masa is good, soft and flavorful but that's about it. . In my two tamales only one had any meat and whatever meat there was, came at the end tip/bottom third of one of those tamales, AND that meat was 3 bites of chicken.. Well then Won't be returning ____________________________________________________________________________________ First impression based off the burrito was not a good impression at all . . . I just wanted something quick and they were out of tamales (which everyone says are great) so i opted for 2 burritos, one for a friend and one for myself. they definitely look good, slathered in sauce and cheese, and the side sauce, though just a tablespoon, smelled great. Yelp has really gotta start giving you the option of a 1/2 a star. So, that 2 star above is really more like a 2.5. Or 2.25. Working in K-town with so much great Korean food around, I sometimes find myself inexplicably struck with the strongest cravings for Mexican food. So, running back to the office, I stopped by and picked up a quick burrito, so the review is necessarily limited to that one item on the menu :) La Poblanita is located in a fairly hideous tiny strip mall. Translation: lots of parking spaces were available. The owner seemed friendly and to update an earlier reviewer, it appears La Poblanita has changed it ways enough to earn an "A" from the Health Department. I ordered the Ranchero Burrito ($5.50), which is a combo burrito with chunks of pollo asado, carne asada and rice. I opened the styrofoam container and saw a brick. It's huge, coated in red sauce, and covered with cheese. The other two compartments in the container are filled with a chopped tomato and iceberg lettuce salad drowning in what appeared to be an avocado sauce. I wish I had thought to take a photo cuz it looked so pretty but I was so hungry that I just tore into it. Now, it's too late. Because there was so much gristle and bone in the chicken that it's now piled on the plate next to the partially eaten burrito and that doesn't make for pretty pictures. The light green avocado sauce didn't taste like avocados. In fact, it didn't really taste like anything. On the positive side, the beef had a nice charcoal flavor that I enjoyed. I might have enjoyed the chicken but the bone/gristle thing was distracting me. I suppose La Poblanita would do if you absolutely HAD to have your Mexican food fix, right NOW and couldn't possibly wait for something better. But, don't drive out of your way for it. It's a tiny little restaurant but god do I have so many memories here. Once I ate here I knew I had to come with my close ones. Wonderful service, the cashier always treats me more than a customer. I love this place! The owner is a friendly guy. The prices are cheap and the food is good. I have been going there for a while and I always order the burrito. It's $4.50 for a burrito and that burrito is really big! The meat is juicy and the sauces that they put on the burrito are good. The tacos here are also really good. They recently replaced the chairs and tables in their outdoor seating area, as well as recently updated their signage. The people who run this place are incredibly friendly and I'm still a huge fan of their delicious tortas. So I've been frequenting this joint since my first year at Southwestern (Fall '06) which is half a block away. I think the entire janitorial staff goes there as well which is a good sign. ha. Um...good prices and food. I was surprised by their camarones one time because I didn't expect them to be that good. I also get their veggie burrito which is like $3 and super duper filling. I've been coming here since I moved into the neighborhood around 6 years ago. I literally went 10 months where i was eating fish tacos 5-7 days a week and in the event that they were out of fish that day the burrito vegetariano was readily available and remains one of the best buys on the menu at $3.50. But the fish tacos are by far my favorite thing there. $4.50 for 3 fish tacos and rice and beans add $1.50 for a mexican medio litro Coke or Squirt and you are out the door for $6. Also the Flautas are good though I'm not too keen on the beef tacos or burrito. Whenever i move away I will certainly look back with fond memories of this place and their fish tacos. Also I find it's better to support these little Mom and Pop type of establishments than spend money at more expensive chains. These types of places, while overlooked in the grand scheme of things, are what really gives an area or a street it's character and personality. La Poblanita is still kicking and alive. Back in the days there was an open food station where you could get anything in the middle of the night, really rare specialties that I have not seen in a long time. Now, there is a small sitting area and no food at night, hence no more drunkies! But still, they serve burgers and fries, burritos, tacos and breakfast items. This place is functioning well, where lots of locals eat and hang out. Where Korean food is everywhere on this corner, La Poblanita is the only safe heaven for some rice and beans. read more
