This is a MUST stop. We have been coming here for 3 years. We just happened to find it while getting Christmas decorations at the store next door. We are from California, have been to Mexico and love Mexican food. La Roca is our FAVORITE and we compare every other Mexican place to this one. It's not easy to find Oaxaca style Mexican food, let alone one this good. The waitress remembers us every year and remembers our order...that's impressive. A solid four stars, I think. The food was fresh and delicious, which was appreciated. The portions were pretty small, but because of the quality, it didn't bother me much. Our server was super fast and attentive. Minus one star because the peppers in my taco salad were almost raw, the beans at the bottom of the taco salad shell were super watery, the chips seemed store-bought and basic, and the ambiance inside the place is uncomfortable, plain, and brightly lit. BEST SERVICE EVER. I've never been to a restaurant with such amazing service. They joked with my kids, checked on us often, were so kind, made us all laugh, and our drinks and chips and salsa were never empty! They had the best salsa I've EVER had in my life with a smoked pepper taste. Their green salsa was so spicy (he warned us) but SUCH good flavor. My fish was buttery and cooked to perfection. Last night I was at the Undertow Comedy Festival. During the routine the topic came up: "What's Good in town?" The local erupted with approval of La Roca, quickly followed by which is better--"The Super Grande" or "The Vegetarian Burrito"? We had to come see for ourselves. The staff was friendly and easy-going. Felt good for families, party-goers or business. And the food? Awesome! Delicious, filling and true to TexMex form. I had "The Super Grande" (no rice because it's my preference though I tried their rice and it was very well cooking and spiced.) It was delight to find something that reminded me of fine Southern Texas flare out in the Northwest. Highly recommend. read more

Absolutely delicious, authentic Mexican cuisine. My chile relleno was so incredible. Delicious sauces, interesting ingredients, fresh tasting. I don't usually eat rice, but La Roca's rice was super delicious. The waitresses were top notch. We were referred there by someone at Kyllos, and we were very pleased. We loved it so much that we went to another Mexican place the next day (Puerta Vallarta restaurant) and PV was awful by comparison. I have bookmarked La Roca so we can come back on a future vacation. We got an Al pastor burrito and some horchata. The burrito was AMAZING 5 stars!!! They also give you fresh chips and salsa as you wait for your food. The chips was really good and fresh and hot. The salsas, especially the green one was very flavorful. The only negative was that we waited about 30-35 minutes for the burrito to get to us... We arrived early, 5:20pm, for a quick "takeout" so we could catch the sunset at 6:18pm. The restaurant was at COVID capacity with several people waiting outside. After we ordered we waited outside as we watched many "to go" orders get picked up plus more people waiting to get a table. This place has always been too busy to try, so our 1st time was last night. It's understandable since your coast options are limited and Puerto Vallarta was closed for a family emergency. We walked in and had a 20 min. They asked us to wait outside or in our car. It was windy so we opted for the car. They called when our table was ready. We were seated and it was 5 min before water and chips/salsa were dropped off. We ordered right away, but as mentioned, they were busy. We asked for more chips and salsa that never came. My food made it to the table before our beverages. No one came back to check on us after that. I had to go up to the counter and ask for my own to-go box and ask to pay the bill. They're open for in person dining but I did takeout twice over a weekend. This is family style Mexican but it is a bit different and actually has more interesting flavors than your typical place. How did people find good food before Yelp and their lovely mobile app!? During my birthday weekend it served us quite well but La Roca was the total winner in finds. It's definitely an unassuming little joint but I wish we'd had a chance to come out here sooner! The decor is simple and it's not oversized. We were quickly greeted with water and chips/sals. Well I say salsa but it was more like a red sauce & a green sauce that were delicious. I had a hard time settling on a food choice but went with the super burrito (they have a tiered option of how big you want it to be) since it had some guacamole. I went with the marinated pork (though they have quite the meat selection) and Oh. MAN. That was a really good burrito. All the ingredients were clearly fresh and the pork was so good. Flavorful, chewy, real pieces...finishing it was a struggle but I didn't want to leave a single bite. My boyfriend got a beef enchilada and cheese enchilada. He said it was one of the best enchiladas he had in awhile and he's definitely not a foodie - or one to say such things. I sampled the sauce and it was so good. They bring chips to the table, and we ordered guacamole but they didn't being out the guac or any more chips until our entrees came out so that was a bit weird. It's been 5 months since I left Texas for the new digs on the Oregon Coast -- and so 5 months and 1 day since my last fix of Tex-Mex cooking. (well... except for my own) Like most of the best places here, La Roca is a local and family operated, tiny cafe -- The space is cozy and a little cramped, full of steamy warmth from the kitchen which was welcome on a chilly and rainy spring day. I'm never sure what to expect of Mexican food places outside the Southwest. A lot of the food has the same names -- but when I look at plates coming out of the kitchen -- there's nothing familiar. I've never heard of "pastor" tacos -- but there were 2 kinds of pork tacos listed on the menu -- marinated pork tenderloin, and fried pork tenderloin -- and in another page of the menu, they were called carnitas and pastor. I ordered 1 of each, and I still couldn't tell you which was supposed to be which. I'd have asked the server, but she was pretty busy. Perhaps next time. The beans and rice on the lunch plate were bland -- no seasoning to speak of at all. Orange colored rice and a shallow pool of liquified pinto beans. For starters, the waitress brought a basket of chips and tiny dishes of 2 sauces -- a red (though not tomato-based) picante? and maybe green chili and/or tomatillo? La Roca has a sign that says " Oaxaca" as you walk in -- so I'm guessing that's where these recipes may have originated. The food was tasty., but far from what my taste-buds were craving. They had bottled Mexican Cokes on the menu which is always a plus and worth 1 star all by itself. I may revise up after husband and I go back a few times and try other options; but, for now, the best I can do is 3.1/2 stars.. read more

The decor seems very authentic, the service is friendly and fast, the portions are quite large. The chips are fresh and hot -- sadly the sauce that comes with them tasted foreign to my palate. The guacamole was fine - (so I'm told, it's not something I would eat) - but like most of the food here, not stellar. I got a carne asada burrito, the wife a pastor (pork) burrito and my daughter had a chili relleno burrito - something that was new to all the fam. . I wish I had thought it through when I ordered and asked for the beans to be left off. The sauce on top of the burrito wasn't very inspired and the cheese on top was more of an afterthought than a feature. The rice was fine but nothing special. The pastor burrito was good - not the best (my wife has a significantly large sample size to compare against), but also not the worst. My daughters chil relleno burrito was "fine" - more flavorful than a lot of veggie burritos she has had. This place is probably a 4 on an Oregon Coast -limited options- scale but only a 3 on an Oregon wide scale. If I lived here I am sure I'd be here fairly often.
