The food was the typical tourist fare. I had a very breaded slab of some sort of fried fish. It was very fresh. The small portion of salad was of the supermarket iceberg variety along with a small side of rice and some corn tortillas. Service was nearly nonexistent. The only reason we got served at all is because my Spanish speaking friend got up after we had been sitting at a dirty table, ignored by the waitstaff for over 30 minutes. After they served us, no one came back to check on us. The bathrooms were disgusting. There were no seats on the toilet so I opted to hold it. It started raining pretty hard while we were eating and that was quite beautiful to see and hear as we were right there on the beach of the Mexican riviera. We nursed our drinks as the storm passed and the sun came back out. Then it was time to tackle a server so we could pay and I could get back to the hotel and pee. Hubby and I found ourselves in Centro today at lunchtime, so we decided to try Tarraya Playa del Carmen. I got chicken and Hubby got the fish filet, both done Mayan style with achiote. This restaurant was recommended by our cab driver. It is located right on the beach. The service was great and they made sure to clean off the table throughout our visit making sure there wasn't any trash on the table. Also very attentive. Our waiter recommended the fresh catch of the day which is a red snapper baked with veggies in garlic butter. What we failed to ask the waiter was how much is the fish and how big is the fish. They brought out the biggest fish that cost $98. It was only 4 of us and we wasn't expecting a big fish like that. The picture of the fish on the menu didn't look like anything like the fish they brought us. So my advice to out of towners is to ask how much is the fish and how big is the fish or have them show you the fish before they prepare it. The fish was good and fresh. At the recommendation of a You Tuber, came here. Fish empanizado looked good but the super thin filet was cold to the touch, it was more breading than fish. We ate there twice. My g/f & her brother each had the fried tilapia & RAVED about it the first time we ate here. I had the grilled octopus the first time and enjoyed it. The second time we ate here I had the grilled shrimp, as did my g/f & her brother had the fried tilapia. I was not as happy with the shrimp as it was served with the shells still attached. Our server was attentive and helpful, there was a guitar player just on the beach who was playing for the restaurant, and he was good. The fish fillet with Chipotle sauce was good, however the sauce overpowers the taste of the fish. I was here almost 2 hours, as it took my waiter that long to greet me, take my order, serve my food, and bring my check. No burn ànd turn here ! No worries about becoming intoxicated, I only managed to get 2 beers out of my server in all that time. It would appear that there is no rush to wait on folks fast here in Mexico. Also, the majority of the servers here in mexico are guys. However, most of the cashiers are women ??? After going over the entire menu several times, I settled on a shrimp stuffed avacado. GOOD CHOICE !!!! I pictured little bay shrimp with mayonesa inside 2 half avocados. Nope.........generous sized shrimp cut into perfect pieces, tossed with chopped onion,tomato, cilantro and oil. You can't beat the location and fresh seafood here! as well as amazing prices and generous portions! They go out every morning and catch the seafood that they serve that day, which is pretty amazing. We had the fried calamari for an app, and each 3 of us had the catch of the day, had the filets prepared 3 ways: battered with chipotle, grilled with garlic butter and grilled with Diablo sauce. All 3 preparations were delicious and the calamari was soooo tender! I stopped here for dinner when I visited Playa del Carmen for a day trip. This is right on the beach at one of the main entrance. When I first entered the restuarant, I stood by the entrance waiting for a hostess. But no one greeted me upon entering. So I walked up to the counter and asked them if I can sit outside. The man got one of the waiters to escort me to the seats outside. I ordered the nachos appetizer which was very delicious! I highly recommend it. By itself it was very filling, but since I was on vacation, I splurged and got a fish entree. Prior to coming to Mexico, there was a specific fish dish I wanted to try. Unfortunately I didn't not write down the name of it. On their menu they had about 5 fish entrees, but no pictures to let you know what you're ordering. The description wasn't helpful. I wasn't able to Google each entree to find the one I was looking for, so I just went with whatever sounded good. My waiter wasn't welcoming so I couldn't ask him for his opinion on the dish. The fish dish I ended up with was good but not amazing. Flavor was lacking. But all in all, it was a good dinner with a nice view. The price was very reasonable. read more

We had a great experience here. This place has character and isn't too far from shopping. Service was not fantastic, but the location on the beach made for nice views and a great vibe. We had the guacamole, which I literally ate all of. The flavor was good and the chips were homemade. They serve a spicy onion water...it's not salsa...with the chips. Shrimp ceviche was perfection. I'm giving this 5 stars because of the snapper. We shared a 2lb whole snapper. It was fabulous! Light, fluffy, crispy and not fishy at all. It came with fresh tortillas, which were delicious. This is a great place to sit on the beach and grab lunch. Our friend brought us here after he visited in the past and we all enjoyed our food. Most of us got the full fish or a fillet, ceviche, guacamole and the octopus which all tasted great. The margarita was ok but not the best. I preferred sangria and my friends just ordered beer or tequila. There's a bathroom with running water and tp unlike some bars on the beach that use outhouses. Great place if you are looking for dining ambience. It is right on the beach and great for catching a breeze and people watching. You want your toes in the sand? This is your place. Great food and service, not so much. Our server took awhile to get to us for our beverage order but once we ordered he was fast. The food was a bit bland and the nachos we ordered tasted like they had tomato sauce on them, not a lot of flavor. Overall, it was all about the location. Born in the Caribbean I'm used to eating fresh seafood. It doesn't get any fresher than this. You can see the fisherman coming off their boats with coolers in the morning bringing in the fish. Great tasting food, fried red snapper was Awesome and the octopus ceviche was delicious. We had an awesome waiter named Manuel. Super honest and knowledgeable. We ended up coming back twice. Try getting there around 5 and eat at the outside tables in front of the beach. . When the sun comes down you can enjoy a beautiful view while enjoying your food. read more

If a dirty beach front hole in the wall place, with nasty restrooms and serves on paper plates is worth 4 stars, then we're not going to be yelp buddies. If I could give this restaurant less stars I would. My wife and I ate here after about four days in playa. The setting is amazing but we literally ate there last night and I think I want to die today. We order grilled shrimp for her and octopus Veracruz style for me. I was only able to eat about two forkfuls of mine. The octopus was not even remotely fresh and had clearly been cook several days prior and reheated. My wife's shrimp, which we ordered on our servers recommendation, were mushy and so heavily seasoned they were like eating spoonfuls of mushy garlic salt. We brought all of this to our servers attention and he said there was nothing he could do, the owner/manager even refused to give us a slight discount. So at the end of the day we paid full price for a meal that made us both sick. Please don't eat here, you'll thank me tomorrow!! read more

The meals were inconsistent. I ordered the same fish in red sauce as other people in my family -- mine was delicious -- large thick serving of great quality fish. The staff is under trained, during our lunch the waiter dropped a shrimp cocktail, on me. I then very kindly asked to get it replaced and walked up to get cleaned and asked to talk to someone in charge. When I asked this to another server he turned around and said I don't know, and sat down at another table to chat with other servers. I then sat down back at my table, literally in my bikini. No other clothes, asked the waiter what can the establishment can do to assist and said nothing. I asked for compassion and frankly expressed my experience of lack of customer service.
