My friend at work suggested coming here and it did not disappoint. From the time we sat down, we immediately noticed two things: first, the service is impeccable and second, the staff really wants you to know that everything is made in house. This has become our new special occasion restaurant. Not because it is expensive but just because we don't often venture into the city. However, for the city it is very easy to get to. There's a lot right across the street where you can park for $10. Or save by parking in the Little Italy garage and a few minutes walk. My absolute favorite is the tallegio pasta. I have been here on a few occasions but I have mostly avoided it not due to the poor quality food, but because it resides in a dangerous environment. Otherwise, this restaurant is top tier. The Margherita pizza is fantastic, and respectable in its own rights. The sauce is rather savory and natural in flavor, the mozzarella is melty but has a nice texture, and the pizza overall is on the thin side, also being on the crunchier side. Where to begin: My wife and friends (two who were African American, and I am dark skinned Indian myself) all attended this restaurant based on its rating. From the the moment we sat down, it was a downward spiral. I will list all the items and let the reader decide for themselves: 1. When I asked the waiter if anything came with their entrees, the waiter responded with a snarky tone "no, this find dining restaurant what do you think?". I was thrown off by his tone for asking a simple question, but let it go at that (chalking it up to a possible misunderstanding). He was curt and short with us and made it a point that the kitchen closed at 9pm (we had arrived at 8:30pm). 2. Then he informed us that we had to order now because they were closing soon (again, not a big deal, but this was just the beginning). I asked if there was a desert menu, and he said there was one (but NEVER brought it). 3. He took our orders (I asked the waiter what he recommended and ordered it: the spaghetti with crab meat) and shortly afterwards we pointed out to him the promotion for "First Responders" getting 10% off the food check on Thursdays (one of our friends is a first responder). He said that didn't apply now (even though it was Thursday and nothing indicated anything differently). I asked him why and he ignored me and walked away. 4. We then asked another staff member and they said it did apply and our original waiter came back saying it was 10%. The staff member explained there was some confusion on the start date (which didn't make sense since the promotion was sitting right there in front of us fully indicating the promotion. I told her I would not provide a bad review, but that something needed to be done. 5. Afterwards, the food arrived and to be honest the spaghetti was undercooked (for the dish my wife and I ordered) and frankly was not good. 6. The waiter never came by to ask if we needed anything: more olive oil, bread, water, or anything else, even though all of those had run out very quickly. We asked for water, but it was only the other staff member who came by later. 7. One of my African American friends, who is a teenager, said she was scared to drink anything from the waiter because he was rude and thought he may have spit in the food or drink (I thought it was unlikely, but he was certainly rude and the racist part was a possibility). We then explained the situation to the staff member and she apologized for his behavior and explained she had had issues with him before. 8. The waiter came back as we were ready to leave and asked for the bill and he asked if we wanted any desert (and again, we still had not received any dessert menu). We all agreed we wanted to get out of there as fast as possible. 9. We asked for the bill and when it arrived, we noticed the "first responders discount only covered the entree portion of the meal". We inquired about it and they said it would not cover her family or any drinks. We let it go. 10. My wife did ask for more lemon slices, and he pointed out the two slivers of lemon that were used before saying that was plenty. 11. I told the staff member as we were leaving all the items that occurred (although I held back on the racist feeling the waiter had created). She was nice, but not nice enough to overcome the horrible experience we had with the waiter. She kept mentioning she hoped we would come back. She did take off one of the drinks as a comp to try and make amends, but that was no where near enough. I did not say anything and left it at that. 12. They charged an automatic 20% (since we were a party of 6), but if I had my way we would have not tipped anything given how rude he was and given how very likely racist the waiter was. I write this review (even though mid-way I had said I wouldnt), only because the bad behavior continued. We all left and instead went to have dessert somewhere else since this "fine" dining was anything but fine. So, if you have anything that is not white skin or if you don't appreciate "fine" dining rude behavor, I would recommend avoiding this establishment. There are plenty of other italian restaurants in the neighborhood who will gladly take your business with good service and a smile. read more

My coworker and I found them on the list for Baltimore Restuarant Week 2020 while looking for a new lunch spot. Beautiful restaurant. Service is top notch. Were greeted as soon as we walked in the door. Our host gave us a history lesson on the restaurant, awards the chef has won for different dishes. Pasta and sauces are in house made. Lunch menu was extensive. $20 for a decent side appetizer and entree. I had bruschetta to start. Creamy, melted cheese with yummy tomato topping on their housemade bread...so good! My entree was the pizzette Margarita. Perfect size pizza for lunch. Crispy crust. My gf/coworker started with the Zuppa, vegetable soup. She said it was very good. This was our (wife and I) second time visiting this restaurant, and it was just as great as our first time. Let me start by acknowledging Anthony (manager) whom helped me with my reservation. We went on Mother's day and even though they we booked he squeezed us in. The food was outstanding I'm vegan so the server recommended their vegan dish (veggies and gluten free/dairy fee noodles) which was tasty and very lite. My friend and I came here for restaurant week because of the plentiful options on their prix-fixe menu compared to other participating restaurants. The food was done well, but the star of the night was definitely the Pesce al Cartoccio. I will not forget the phenomenal fragrance the dish when our water ripped open the parchment pouch the dish was baked in. The flounder and scallops melt in your mouth and are seasoned perfectly, while still maintaining their individual delicate flavors. The grape tomatoes and squeeze of lemon on the side added the perfect touch of acidity to cut through the seafood. My only complaint was that there wasn't a spoon for me to finish the broth! A more detailed review of the individual dishes we ordered is below. I had no problems with any of the dishes-- they were all good, but the dish that would convince me to come back again is the Pesce al Cartoccio. My parents came to town for a visit and we went to this spot in Little Italy. The service was great, and the food good. I had the gnocchi in red sauce (it was the only vegan friendly option, but I'll always take gnocchi), with a side of seasonal vegetables. The main reason I'm dropping a star is the vegetables. The waiter told me it would be be a small portion.... but while my gnocchi was $18, the "side of vegetables" was $7.50. Please look at the amount of vegetables. It's a handful of fingerling potatoes, a single carrot, and a single sprig of broccoli. If you're going to offer a side of vegetables.... how can you justify charging $7.50 for literally 3 bites??? Came to this restaurant on Tuesday to celebrate an award. The ambience was divine. I opted for the 3 course menu, and I am forever going to use the food here as a parameter to judge other Italian Foods; especially the squid ink spaghetti. The only thing that was decent was the eggplant parmigiana. The calamari was terrible- cold and soggy. The batter coating was also terrible and not fried well. I couldn't finish eating it. The pastas came out completely undercooked. I would have even appreciated al dente, but this was just UNDERCOOKED. My dish was the Rigatoni con Cime di Rapa from the restaurant week menu. It tasted like water and garlic. I kept trying to eat it not to be rude, but I couldn't. My partner's dish was the Linguini allo scoglio- the seafood was way overcooked and tasted like rubber. Was tough to make a choice (which is usually a good thing), but after an especially long and highly conflicting Yelp perusal, I settled on the linguine con taleggio. It was a successful choice! I live right across from this restaurant and let me tell you it is my favorite restaurant not just because of the great food (they make everything in house) but also for the excellent service. Really warm staff and the amazingly hospitable chef Mr. Carlo. I love their seafood dishes (Pesce del Giorno and Crab Bruschetta). I've been here before but this time we brought some friends here to check out the restaurant week menu. Excellent service and delicious food! For $35 you get an app, entree and dessert. You can also add $20 for wine pairing. The only thing that was a little confusing was the check in the end, it wasn't straight forward so make sure you spend some time looking it over. This should be fixed. You won't see a fixed $35 or $20 charge but they broke it down by dishes and glasses which will be confusing if you have a large group. I couldn't drink the wine but the other folks in my group said it was a great pairing. 5/5- The Zuppa Di Pesce (Pairing: "The Insider" Cabernet Sauvignon) - Rockfish, mussels and shrimp in a spicy tomato broth is hands down amazing! 4/5- zuppa Del Giorno (Pairing: Colosi Nero D'avola) - Blended vegetable bisque of potato, tomato and peppers topped with a touch of pesto. What a lovely place for a surprise birthday dinner! We had the Carpaccio di Bietole as an appetizer, which was refreshing and delicious. For drinks we shared a pink peach cocktail, which was sweet and smooth. The homemade bread they brought us was still warm and I had to stop myself from eating the entire plate! For entrees we had the linguine taleggio and the braised elk special. The elk was melty and tender, almost like a pot roast, and the bed of polenta was creamy and savory. The linguine was rich, salty, earthy, and filling. It was definitely my favorite of the night. The cannolis for dessert were filled with dried fruit and nuts, and the ricotta filling had just the right amount of sweetness. The fruit sauces and whipped cream on the side were a perfect addition. Everything was amazing, I just took off one star because there was only one waiter working and so service was slower than I would expect for the price of the food. Last week, I ordered Linguini alla Romana, and that prosciutto cream sauce--absolutely delicious. I would've ordered the same thing, had my dinner companion not egged me to try something new. At our waiter's suggestion, we went with linguini scoglio and linguini con taleggio e tartufo. Portion size looks to be on the smaller side, but I was stuffed when the last bite hit my stomach. The taleggio cheese is absolutely delicious, sharp, and flavorful, but heavy. Highly recommend for all you cheese lovers! Dish presentation was beautiful. Since I was staying close to Little Italy, I thought I'd have to try eat Italian one night. Walking in the neighborhood, they're are so many to choose from. From small little shops to larger upscale eateries, take your pick. Went to trusty Yelp to help decide. La Tavola was the first that came up. I also got a recommendation from the front desk girl at my hotel as well. I would categorize La Tavola as the larger upscale restaurant compared to the others in Little Italy. It's deceiving from the outside but when you really look, it occupies an entire two story building. From the outside it doesn't look look like much but walking in looks like thev place was recently renovated. The carpet even had that new smell. I got there at 530pm, well within the happy hour which is from 430-630pm only at the bar. The waiter served a complementary bread plate which had 3 slices of loaf bread which wasn't anything special but the 2 pieces of focaccia bread was out of this world! Apparently, the chef has different toppings on the bread each night...this particular might was roasted garlic. The focaccia was the lightest and airiest (is that even a word?) I had ever tasted. The waiter said it was potato based. After reading the Yelp reviews, the reason why I chose here was to try Spaghetti Neri Al Granchio (squid ink pasta). It was tossed with fresh tomatoes, spinach and a ton of lump crab meat. I was surprised with the amount of crab! Well, after reading the reviews and taking my first bite, I have to be honest...I wasn't blown away. Not sure if the reviews I read hyped it up but it was okay. I thought it'd be a richer sauce which was supposed to be a garlic wine. I asked the waiter for some parmesan cheese which he told me the chef doesn't recommend due to the flavor contrast. Overall a good dining experience. Nice ambiance, attentive/friendly staff and good food. If I were in Baltimore again would I go back? Probably not, I'd try a different place. read more

Love checking out Little Italy when in Baltimore. Tried La Tavola. Great ambiance and friendly staff. Started with two specials. Shared the I think ricotta filled squash blossoms. Not filled with bold flavors, just soft and delicate and a fun way to kick it off. I went with a baby clam lentil soup. This seemed like an odd combination but the clam flavor came through again as a delicately flavored soup. It got better with every bite. My main course was linguini alla scoglio. Lots of seafood, Manila clams, shrimp, sea scallops and mussels in a light tomato spicy sauce. Great little spot. One salad didn't make it till after the meals were served but in general we had a good time and would stop in again for sure. read more

La Tavola is I think the BEST Italian restaurant in Baltimore. The chef-owner, Chef Carlo, is a creative genius with food. He makes virtually everything in house, including the bread, the pasta, as well as the sauces and the main entrees. And he uses the freshest ingredients. On my recent visit, I had an appetizer I think was called bresole. It was a bed of thinly cut, cured meat, with fresh arugula, cheese, balls of melon. And for me the most special thing was figs that the chef lightly grilled. The chef has a fig tree in his backyard. Right now he has a lot of figs from this fig tree. Lightly grilling the fig brings out its sweetness. I have literally never tasted that in my entire life. And I cannot get that for any amount of money anywhere, except at La Tavola. The chef has a commercial fishing license and he sometimes goes fishing in the morning and serves at the restaurant the fish he caught the same day. The chef's commitment to fresh ingredients is unparalleled. Then I had the short ribs on a bed of risotto. Absolutely fabulous. The meat just falls off the bone. And for dessert I had the tartuffo. I need my food gluten free so I have just the top part of the tartuffo (so no cake). It tastes great. It's gelato with a chocolate sauce. I should mention all the dishes I named here are specials. Special means it is not available all the time. This is another reason why I never tire of eating here. In addition to the regular menu items, there are always specials that change depending on what fresh ingredients the chef has on hand that day. The chef is also very open to making his restaurant gluten-free friendly. He does not have a dedicated gluten free kitchen. But I am happy to report I eat here frequently and I have never gotten sick from gluten here. I don't know of any other restaurant in Baltimore that has home made gluten free pasta. Chef Carlo offers strofe which is made with Italian gluten free flour. All I care is it tastes great. Almost all of the pasta dishes are gluten free if you make it with strofe. Dining here is like dining with family. I like the relaxed atmosphere. The atmosphere is casual but it is also nice enough and the food is special enough to be a special event restaurant. This is a lovely place. Carlo hand makes all of the pasta. I chose the GF pasta and paired it with the puttanesca. It was perfect comfort food. I didn't get a picture of the eggplant my husband had but he enjoyed it. My husband ordered dessert. I'm GF and the chef bought me some fresh creme and a Goji berry in chocolate which paired beautifully with my cappuccino. The eclair Im told was incredible with mascarpone and pistachio filling. I'm glad they use real crabs, but chewing on the shells was not fun. However, I have to say that other than that everything else was exceptional! The service was impeccable, super friendly and professional. It was an easy choice to pick the squid ink spaghetti since it was one of their signature dishes, it was good, but it's not anything I've never tasted. The pasta was cooked al dente but had no significant taste. The cherry tomatoes however were so sweet and I wish there was more of that in the dish. The crabmeat was good, but I just wish it didn't have any shells. It's kind of like eating raw oysters and you crunch unexpectedly on rocks and dirt. We also ordered the lasagna and that was one of the best tasting lasagna, love the fact that no ricotta was used. We then had the profiteroles for dessert and once again nothing out of the ordinary, but it was nicely presented. All in all, a great experience and I would go back again and try the other seafood dishes because they did look very good as they were being delivered to other tables. read more
